I'm a teacher and I've got to say this is one of the most professionally constructed courses I've seen on youtube much better than a lot of paid courses on various other mediums. Thank You. Many of the pseudo Udemy instructors need to take a lesson from this, this sets a benchmark in so many ways.
+Adam Kaan Hey Adam, Thank you very much for you kind words. Means a lot, especially from a teacher! All of this is purely instinctual. I have no formal qualifications in teaching or training. I would really love to meet up with fellow teachers and discus the principle of teaching, philosophies of teaching and tips of tricks. Is there someone sort of network? Or am I gonna have to go ahead and start one? ha ha
I'm sure there are forums online. Most of it is common sense. I think the reason why other tutorials aren't as good is simply because people are lazy/busy or both and don't put enough thought and time in to organising their work. I myself have been guilty of that. The only thing missing is a written script. Written scripts reduce the likelihood of missed steps. Also an assessment with a checklist would be great, even though the completed task acts as form of assessment.
I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!! I'm both a fan of creativity and organization. I've been hunting down for good tutorials on YT to give me a good start on using AI for my tshirt business. I love how clearly you presented AI -- from interface first then down to more technical/creative concepts. I've been looking for a while for something like this, because, as a beginner, I seek first to understand the program itself (interface, workspace, and other basic technicalities) before mixing and matching the installed applications/buttons to produce a creative work. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
By far the best tutorial available online. My designer ditched me and left me in the lurch for a project. Discovered your video. Took 3 whole days to go through everything and then completed the project myself. Saving myself some money now on having to pay design fees. Thank you very much! This is additional skill I can add to my resume.
Watching this in 2018 and is still amazing, learning photoshop and illustrator, i´ve browse and watched over 100 photoshop tutorials and just getting started with illustrator and i havent seen a tutorial like this, incredible value and its all for FREE¡!
One of the better tutorial series for Illustrator and design. I'm so thankful for this. There are so many TH-camrs that are completely pretentious (and terrible at both design and teaching, which compounds the problem).
I would like to say more than "Thank you so much", but I don't know what I have to say. I have learnt so many videos from your channel. You are "The Best". Thank you for sharing and teaching again.
This is by far the single best tutorial series I've ever seen on the Internet! The lesson plan, the content, the balance and sync between showing and speaking, the steps, and last but not least, your calm, nice voice, which makes it a pleasure to listen to... I'm a teacher, too, and I really appreciate all the effort and time you've put on this. THANK YOU so much for making this available for free!
Just reopened illustrator after 3 years of not working with it .. Now I am using your videos to familiarize myself with everything again. Thanks for the videos they are really great.
I followed your After Effects and Photoshop course and now am here. I think we should rename these course Adobe 101 and should be compulsory for anyone getting into studying design etc. in school. So well explained and so in sync with the beginner's mind. I congratulate you sir.
I've tried so many other tutorials since I'm a total stranger to vector graphics, they were all boring or excessively informative, although at this stage we're not on any real project, I can say I'm learning so much, this series of tuts is hands on the best.
I admire how you explained things so clearly. I'm from Indonesia and I can understand your pronunciation very well without subtitle. You're such a pro, thank you so much, I definitely will watch the entire lessons and I hope you will make advanced tutorials about Adobe Illustrator in the future.
I can't thank you enough for your fantastic tutorials. I was struggling to learn AI and you have made it crystal clear for me. Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!
i wish i could've found this video earlier than this, more than 6 years since the upload and still better than any "new' lessons, still have 15 video to catch on and in the first 4 videos i learn more than every tutorial i watched ( i have experience with PS and InDesign but never thought i would need illustrator) so this tutorial is really good at explaining even the smallest things
I have to say, that this is one of the best rounded tutorials that I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this course for free and keep up the great work!
3:18 If you're having trouble selecting the dotted box on the right, try unlocking the blue "worksheet" layer in the layers panel by clicking the lock icon next to the layer. Mine was locked when I opened the doc, but in the video, it starts off unlocked. Can't select if it the layer is locked.
I learned this after searching a while about the topic and would like to share with you guys: When you have a handle visible, if you press and hold the ALT key, you can change only one of the handles at a time, instead of the two. This can be very useful for some tasks!
Very good tutorial! Honestly I tried Lynda and got bored within 20minutes. While at the same time, I just watched your 7 tutorials in one go without even leaving my computer for a second.I have to leave it now just because its too late here:P. Your tutorial, kept me engaged. Thank you very much :)
I hardly comment posts on yt, actually i think this is my 2nd comment under a video ever. But i wanted to say THANK YOU.. this is AWESOME and truly helpfull , many many thanks ! bless you !!
outstanding tutorial - no question, but regarding the rotate tool i thing that it's crucial to know, that it can be used to *precisely* rotate or *copy* rotate an object around *any* fixed point (axis), like so: 1. select an object, 2. select rotate tool, 3. alt/option click where you want a fixed point of rotation to be ( a window will pop up), 4. choose angle: negative = clockwise, positive = anticlockwise, 5. click ok to rotate or click copy if you wish to copy rotate, 6. moreover, if you wish to repeat copy rotation several times, after doing it once beforehand, just press ctrl/command + d this many times. have fun. ;)
I think it’s safe to say you are a blessing to us all I Learned More from you than I did in my Adobe classes in Art school!!!! Thank you so much !! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these tutorials I’m blown away #bestteacherever
You are a SAINT for having such clear tutorials, organized so nicely and with accompanying files! One thing, I know how to zoom from previous programs, but perhaps utter beginners won't know how when you instruct them to do so at 1:32...?
This tutorial series is so organized and well thought out. Very informative and a great way to build a beginner's foundations in Illustrator. Thank you so much for these!
Honestly can't believe it took me so long to try learning this program! I'll look forward to when I can learn painting! I imagine this program is easier to make straight lines than photoshop! Great Tutorials so far!
When I use the direct selection tool, and use it to select the entire circle as you do (holding, clicking and dragging across with the rectangular "box"), the circle's edges are selected in red, but no handles are visible. Both the bounding box is shown, and so are edges under "view" (so it's not that, which is what everyone says the problem is in various forums). The only way to get the handles to "appear" is to use the direct selection tool and select an anchor point, and then only the handles for that particular anchor point are shown (never all 4 handles in the circle as you demonstrate). What am I doing wrong? I am using CS5 on a Mac and have loaded the appropriate file. Very frustrating.
+Craig Sibley You can change this in the Preferences. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Selection & Anchorpoints. There you have to activate "Show handles when multiple anchors are selected"
These are fabulous videos, well developed and teached; clear, good sound, explanations, etc. The whole thing is great, you are awesome, and im agree with Adam Kaan. Im learning this software because corel is not required where Id like to work.
Thank you so so much! I am also looking to learn Illustrator as I will be studying in September Visual communication and your tutorials are helping me so much with refreshing my knowledge on the program but also I am learning things I never knew before :). Thanks for speaking clearly also!!! Great Pro!
Was the zoom option shown at 1:33 only in this version of illustrator? I'm on a newer version and can't seem to get it to work. Some searching on google suggested CTRL/CMND + SPACEBAR, but that just zooms based on mouse movement for me. Would love to be able to draw a square and zoom to exactly where I want.
Hi Thank you, a great tutorial. I seem to have a problem with my direct selection tool on the circle vector, I can see my anchors but they have no handles showing, is this a setting I should change.
Pieter Bickford I had to change my preferences. Go to Illustrator > preferences > third menu for selection and anchors > check the second box, right below the small pictures for how to view your handles and anchors. That fixed it for me. PS: I'm sorry for not using the precise names, my AI isn't set to english.

Awesome tutorial! But to my agony, I cannot download the project folder here. It said "the webpage is blocked"...
I couldn't download the folder. I think your newsletter isn't working

Couldn't agree more!!
Six years later, and this is still the best tutorial on "Selection" vs. "Direct Selection" tools. Bravo!
lol im not alone, amid the pandemic, im trying to learn some AI and this video series have been great so far
9 years later, and this is still the best. wow time flies. :)

I've just started using Illustrator and was sooooo fortunate to stumble upon such a great teacher right off the bet. You're the best!
I am a beginner in Ai and I found your course. I am practicing with your episodes. Really I am loving it. You are so much clear. Thank you.
Thank you very much. These videos are better than most "real-life-teachers"!

+Craig Sibley Same here - Windows and CS6. Did you solve the problem?
+Craig Sibley You can change this in the Preferences. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Selection & Anchorpoints. There you have to activate "Show handles when multiple anchors are selected"
+Mike Arndt Props bruh

Hi
Thank you, a great tutorial.
I seem to have a problem with my direct selection tool on the circle vector, I can see my anchors but they have no handles showing, is this a setting I should change.
I don't see them either but it's probably visible only on CC
Rawrkee I'm using CC and also don't get the handles... until I click on the anchor points.

Go to Illustrator > preferences > third menu for selection and anchors > check the second box, right below the small pictures for how to view your handles and anchors. That fixed it for me.
