How To Make Your Own Budget External SSD Drive!

  • A Mac is already very expensive, so most people can't or won't upgrade the internal storage for increased capacity. The 2TB storage upgrade option from Apple costs $800 USD! What if I told you that you could create your OWN external storage device with the same storage capacity (but not quite as fast) for just 1/3 the cost?
In this video I explore the world of external NVMe m.2 SSD drives and enclosures, and put one together with my own parts and test it's performance on my M1 MacBook Pro (with a 256GB internal SSD).

But macs are free. You just have to buy a used one that is a year old for about 2/3 the price of a new one then a year later you sell it for about $100 more than you paid for it and then buy another and repeat every few months or every year and never pay for a mac again. I have been doing this since 2003 and not only do I have top of the line macs in my home but I also have thousands of dollars on top of the free macs from the continuous flips. Don't buy new macs just buy a used one and snipe a good price when you want to buy it then when you sell take your time and charge a bit over market value to make up the loss of value during the year you owned it.
The first time I wanted a mac I bought and sold about 10 times in the space of a few weeks until I had enough money made to get the mac I wanted for free. Then I thought about it and wondered why I should stop so I kept doing it albeit at a lower pace and made beer money every month with only a few hours of effort. I recommend everyone do this.

PCIe Gen3 SSD's do not really need cooling when used with USB 3.2 Gen2 connections, so what case you use should not matter in terms of cooling.
However, if you are running them in Thunderbolt, with larger file transfers, you will want to use some thermal pads in whatever enclosure you have that drive inside.

Right now you can get it with 1 Terabyte already installed for $255 and just replace the drive later if you want more. got the M1 mini with a cheap enclosure and a Samsung EVO 970 Pro m.2 stick. Making it bootable in Big Sur on the M1 is a bit of a trick, but doable, and worthy of a future video. This stick gets very hot, and at the beginning, it would drop off all the time. But over time, it's become 100% reliable. Boot time is noticeably longer, but still a lot faster than an internal SSD on a 2015 MBP. Running the OS externally is slower then on the M1 internal, but in real world use, usable. Black Magic maxes out this rig out at 600mbs

Great Video! Have you activated TRIM on the external enclosure NVME? Wich app do you have to test the write and read speed and temp control?

The bulk of my storage are files I seldom access, so I just use a huge hdd so it's sort of archival.

I'd say get a Thunderbolt enclosure. Yes more expensive yet the RW speeds are close to the main Mac speeds. I will try to do a review on this WAVLINK TB3 around 120€ in Europe tax included. I put in a Crucial as you did and read speeds are around 2300 write around 1800. The thermal pads will help a lot.

Agree, that Crucial NVMe drive got bottleneck because of USB interface.

i think these low cost enclosures are fantastic, personally i keep one thunderbolt 3 enclosure for my most expensive SSD which is a 2TB sabre - i use an Orico Thunderbolt 3 NVME enclosure and its absolutely fantastic, amazing speeds
I see it as a great backup for if the internal SSD ever dies to have a decent thunderbolt enclosure handy, and then anything else can be a cheaper, low cost enclosure.

you can also get an adapter to allow to use regular m.2 drive in your macbook internally by replacing the internal ssd

What utility is that to measure read/write speeds, CPU, Mem, network performance in the status bar?? I really like it! Can you please comment the name of it? Appreciate it! Love the video too!

Great video. Is that a Dell U2718Q? What is the screen resolution you are using on that? I have the same and mine looks smaller in real estate than yours. I wonder.

I have the basic M1 air and i love it (as a long time windows developer/user).
I also have one of these enclosures but have not used this with my mac yet.
My problem is that i will want to dual boot linux at some point. Internal storage then becomes a problem and ill probably start regretting not having more capacity at boot time.
    But thanks for the video.
I noticed xART on your copying list. I assuming this is ‘art’
    🤔 😂

Please make a video about different enclosures comparison as like you have Plugable enclosure because we are in the same storage of 256GB So definitely we need to manage with some external SSD.

Get the Sabrent external nvme enclosure that’s Thunderbolt 3 and make sure to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Your speeds will be much closer to internal storage. You’re limiting yourself by using that usb-c cable (can’t remember what gen of usb it is). USB-c is just the connector so you need a better cable and enclosure to support the better speeds. You can use the same nvme in the Thunderbolt 3 setup.

I have a Samsung 980 PRO with a theoretical read speed of up to 7000MB/s (BTW, in your video you call the unit "Megabyte" but it is actually "Megabit", 1/8th of a Megabyte). I connected it via a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure to my Mac mini M1. Getting a solid 2500MB/s read & write, which is pretty much the same speed as the internal SSD. Mind-blowing, as it makes the Mac mini so much more attractive as a desktop computer, by allowing to expand the available storage later on.

Very good video I like how thorough you are but I like how simple you make things. And you don’t jump over any steps. Great video one question I have is why do you have your MacBook Pro understand rather than just closing it and putting it in a stand where it sits upright? I’m assuming you’re using the keyboard and the touchpad on the MacBook Pro and that’s why but I thought I would ask. I have mine closed up and use it as a desktop. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro I seven with 16 GB of RAM. Yes it’s almost 10 years old. I just ordered and you M one the other Day and spent four grand on it. But my plan is to keep it for 10 years.

Great channel!! I love it!! It made me buy an MBA m1 and I am very happy with it.
Maybe you have a answer to my following question. That would be great.
I am using a Sabrent usb-c tool free enclosure (EC-SNVE) in combination with a Crucial P2 1TB ssd.
With the Blackmagic speedtest I am getting speeds of 700 write and 520 read.
In my opinion this is very slow. Is it normal that the read is slower than the write?
    What is your opinion?
