      I paid like 1 year ago btw only like 75$ for 2,5" 1TB SSDs and cheap enclosures with USB 3.2
      Made multiple ones for friends and family since some were very unhappy with external, overheating NVMe drives or high speed USB sticks.
      I also tried out some NVMe enclosures and all i can say: most of them sucks, and some dont care at all about thermals and most throttle too heavy (and somehow timer based, totally fked up!)
      Well, i personally stick to 2,5" SATA enclosures and 550MB/s maximum read AND write 24/7 aslong NVMe is easily too overpowered and small. Its like Intel CPUs.... I mean they perform ok, but are way too hot.

    However when it comes to storing things locally I've always preferred external drives anyway since I do a lot of back and forth between my windows desktop and mac. Good video will give this ssd a try sometime!

    Doubt that fan does any notable difference in cooling when compared to that Sabrent. The Fledging has more surface area than the Sabrent so that could be why it cooled down a bit quicker and being couple degrees cooler when under stress. That fan probably does 1 or mayyyybe 2 degree difference and the rest is due to the surface area like I mentioned.

    So I recently did a lot of research into getting an NVMe drive for video editing on my Macbook, but after seriously reviewing all the factors, I personally think that it's a much better idea to spend $200 to jump the Macbook's internal drive from 500GB to 1TB. (Or even spend the $600 for the 2TB) Paying the Apple Tax hurts a lot, yeah - but I think 1TB of internal storage is better than 2TB of external storage that you have to carry with you everywhere you go, and always plug and unplug to do anything.
    And what I ended up deciding would be best was to spend like $150 TOTAL to get an HUGE external HDD and HDD enclosure that stays at my desk. I ended up using a 5TB Western Digital Drive, and that now acts as my long-term storage for old projects and media, which is the main thing I need a bunch of space for anyway. Now my current projects live on my Mac, and then get moved to the hard drive when they're done. I feel like this system works far better, while being cheaper AND giving you 6TB for $450 vs. 2TB for $350.

      When I bought my 256GB Macbook in 2017 I thought that I would just use a 1GB Samsung T5. And, well, I did. However it is such a pain in the ass to plug it in everytime. The mobility factor of a thin and light laptop gets lost very quickly when you have to carry around your external SSD with you. And it is a pain to use it on your lap.

  • @rogerdjojokoesoemo8280
    @rogerdjojokoesoemo8280 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    For the fan to do it’s work there should be an opening in the enclosure. Outlet for hot air and inlet for cold fresh air. The warm air will keep on circulating if enclosere is closed off. Maybe even some air channels to and from the fan for efficient airflow.

      I looked at the product online and there seems to be a few openings on the side of the housing. Judging by the positioning of the fan seen in this video, the fan discharges directly through those holes.There is additional holes on the other side. (The Amazon listing has quite a few photos…)

  • @tl_gr

    Thin about it... If your SD card need 250 mb/s max to record the highest settings on your camera (and it is the case unless you own an Arri Alexa large format or a Black Magic 12K basically...), then why would you ned a 3Gb/s external drive?! You don't need this at all. Everyone who ever put a PC or a server together knows that the OS is fetching the files on the slower drives by utilizing the speed of the faster drive, that should only be used for your applications. For instance, I'm using a 2TB FireCuda HDD which is really really good and stable, whisper-quiet, solid, pro and cost me 100 bucks instead of 2.5 or 3x the cost even for an NVMe, which I do not absolutely not need. Get this, copy your entire desktop folders and directories on it, back it up onto one or two bare 3.5" 7200RPM hard drives, make an ISO image of your system on a NVMe (I recommend the ADATA Swordfish they're the only ones at a decent price and just as good as any other name brand!), and *erase all the folders from your laptop*. Now not only do you have a clean laptop and a faster system, but if anyone find your laptop and steal it, *you and your client's property is safe because none of the actual content is on the laptop.*
    Just about nobody actually need external storage to be at NVMe speed. OK, if your whipping out 3D renders for a major Hollywoodian picture on a M1 Max while chatting with David Soderbergh on your plane to LA, you actually do, but what's that? 0.0001% of the industry's professionals? Come on now.

    After experiencing that sabrent die from overheating only a couple weeks in of using it, and just well seeing this that this doesn't help still. Just definitely, I'm sticking to trusty 2.5" sata ssds. At least besides the added bulk, they don't get hot.
    And with usb flash drives, I stick to usb 2.0 sticks. Every single usb 3 stick I've tried just gets super hot, just can't trust them. At least tryst usb 2 ones I can depend on, even if they're slow, at least they're consistent and I know they're not going to be overheating come 30 minutes later of transfering something big.
    Usb 2 sticks, and 2.5" sata ssds, while there's many bad bunch.. definitely more trustworthy in my experience.

    I've got a better Solution for all ya guys:
    Don't buy a Macbook. Don't buy a MS Surface either.
    Don't buy a Device, where the Manufacturer soldered on the SSD, it's that simple. There is ONLY 1 Reason to do this: To fuck the Customer over. Yes sure, it might safe a Millimeter of Profile internally, that could be accieved in other Ways. No, there is NO technical Reason to solder on the SSD. The only Reason is, that is is EXTREMELY anti Consumer. Because now you are forced to pay a Fortune for bigger Storage upfront.
    You are forced to carry around Shit, if you chose the Capacity to small.
    You are forced to throw your 2000$ Device in the Trash, when the SSD breaks. Because instead of swapping a SSD in 5 Minutes for a few Bucks, you'll need a whole new 2000$ Laptop, congrats!
    So I might suggest to not buy Products, that are designed to Fuck you over.

    I wish there was a drive format that is compatible for all OS other than exFAT. I'm using windows 10 on my PC, BlackArch on my laptop and Monterey on my MacBook. I use a USB stick with exFAT to transfer and open my work files across my devices, it is useable but not really efficient. It's a bit slow when transferring files and I'm kinda annoyed when seeing many .temp files on File Explorer because I opened the files on my MacBook.

    Not worth the $360 for a small fan on the inside. You should be using a RAID system to edit your videos or rendering large graphics files like 3D. I have a Samsung T5 external SSD and it works fine with no overheating or loss of speed and using an empty SanDisk 1TB SSD for the scratch disk space. When using certain apps in Adobe Cloud that allows the option. A lot of reviews on Amazon report of drive overheating or crashing due to editing or copy files over.

  • @michaelkaercher
    @michaelkaercher 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The major problem here is the same as with a lot of the other youtubers. A normal workload of a user does not involve moving 250Gig around. There is a nice video out from Linus Tech Tips where they compared different SSDs with standard and gaming workloads and even the cheapest SSDs had been similar results to the fastest. For a normal User a T5 or T7 or something similar is a good choice. If you are cutting videos on a daily basis (which is about 0.01% of the use cases), this video is interesting for you. Otherwise just make sure you have a decent and large enough SSD in case you need more storage then the Macbook provides out of the box.

    Awesome video, though there's something I couldn't warp my head around.
    In your test with the Fledging you did open the case to see how sensitive the fan was, put under heavy load.
    Which means the thermal pad was disconnected to the enclosure and thus not dissipating heat as efficiently as we would have wanted to.
    In your benchmark, did you manage to compare them with the Fledging fully closed ( with the thermal pad ) ?
    I'd be interested to know what kind of difference that made.
    Best regards.

    Great video mate. Reckon you might be doing one comparing a 4K video export using your internal SSD and one with these [external] drives? I think the question is on a lot of people's mind.

    Hey Liam, any chance of an update to this video with an enclosure that is still available? Enjoyed the video but then went to explore all of the parts required and it looks like fledging went out of business end of 2022

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, did not know they had gone out of business! As far as I know there are no other SSD enclosures with a fan. Honestly I'd just go with the Sabrent XTRM-Q I compared against in this video. After this video I mostly used the XTRM-Q because I used the NVMe drive in the Fledging in my gaming computer. Have had no issues with the XTRM-Q. Super fast, robust, yes it does get hot when transferring massive amounts of data but still wasn't a huge deal for me personally.

  • @ThisRandomGuyYouDidntNotice

    Have to be picky, sry. But SSD means Solid State Drive. So by talking about SSD drives you're talking about drive drives 😅

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only a tiny percentage of people know what SSD stands for. So even though you’re technically correct, sometimes it’s just easier to say “SSD drive” so others with little technical knowledge still know what you’re talking about.

  • @harrison00xXx

    Or you go for the classic 2,5" enclosure and buy SATA III SSD instead, they dont get even warm :)

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also bought some nvme enclosures and tested 2 different SSDs.
      In fact nearly all of the enclosures share the same problem which barely anyone tells (i talk about the USB3.2 enclosures with 650-700MB/s max speed):
      i guess 95% of these enclosures dont give a sh*t about temperature... some dont throttle at all (up to dangerous or at least very fast degrading temperatures) and the rest is using anything like a timer.... the longer the SSD is writing "full speed", the heavier it throttles down. Some enclosures allow only about 80-90MB/s average because most of the time their speed is limited to 200MB/s read and 50MB/s write.
      BUT: The heavy throttling ones are still my favorite. I can write like 100-150GB of files fulll speed, in this time they get handwarm or nearly hot, but then they throttle down heavily. Even throttled the enclosure still keep handwarm at least, when writing they get and stay hot no matter how slow (like avg 100MB/s) they are.
      Where the throttling gets annoying... if you read from a slow HDD... the chips in the enclosure still count for example 80MB/s as "heavy load", resulting in triggering the throttling, but the SSD gets at best handwarm. This is slowing down even the already slow transfer due the HDD...
      Thats why the 2,5" enclosures are the best:
      - you get stable 500-550MB/s, ALWAYS, no throttling, no heat problems
      - as i built mine, 2,5" SATA SSDs were a lot cheaper than NVMe
      - more ergonomic... i dont know why, but i prefer the 2,5" size much over the slim nvme cases. I mean we have to realize... they are more or less used on "huge" notebooks or desktop PCs, its not a USB stick you want on your keychain...
      Im waiting a while for proper thunderbolt 4 enclosures and then enjoy the full 2000MB/s. Hopefully SSDs and the chips in enclosures itself get more efficient then because the NVMe cases are more or less only thermal limited when they dont have other stupid safety limitations like the timer to throttle down speed.
