You're the first person that I've watched who explained coloring so thoroughly and completely. My locs are black and I just want to lift it to a rusty (Auburn) like color. I know this video is old, but I hope you read this and give me some instructions, I'd be so grateful. You know your stuff!

Just for reference. Developer giving lift is only for color. The higher developer you mix with lightener the faster it will process. So if you mix bleach with 40 vol its gonna process in about 10 to 30 mins depending how dark the hair is. Always start with a low developer at 10 or 15 and raise the developer with each new mix. I repeat. Do not start with 40. You will damage your hair and it can potentially break off. So if you don't want your dreads to snap in half or to start peeling layers of hair off, then work with a 10 or 20 vol and just watch it and be patient. Only very experienced stylist should ever start with 30 or 40 vol.

What if you need to dye our gray roots a light brown color and your locs haven’t matured yet. Those root sticks don’t cut it and just make my hair look dry.
Thank you so much for the educational videos. I’m just starting locs. Going into the 4th week. I no when watching videos I have to pick and choose who make sense. One video said they oiled scalp, styled hair and kept playing with it in the first week. Well there hair must have loc’d super fast. I didn’t mess w mine much bc it felt loose. The 2nd time @shop it was twisted different bc it was a different person. And I love the way he did my hair. It was twisted way tighter.
I was hoping I could color my hair sooner but I will wait. I am a blonde in need of a re-touch. You said wait about 6 mos. The 2nd guy that did my hair told me I should wait. The guy that started my locs didn’t give me any info on managing my locs.

Thank you for this helpful information. I have sisterlock and we , My stylist, did my color with a blonde in the front left and dark brown on the rest. I loved the color. Three months later we did a touch up and it turned really orange. She called another stylist in to help fix the roots. Within the next month I had six sisterlock break. Now I have a bad hair history with alopecia so I'm just happy to have hair on my head so I'm counting my blessings. It's been about five or six months and now I have three different colors on my head. My stylist doesn't have any openings for color but it's starting to look a mess and I work in a professional field. What would you recommend? I'm thinking of just trying to dye it all a deep brown, I'm naturally a color 4 but it's more of a Sandy color. Would that do more damage? Should I just leave it alone? Please advise, if your willing?
i know this is old but for anyone with a similar question i would recommend getting adore in some of their natural colors as well as purple shampoo..
use the purple shampoo add the color its a semi permanent so no more bleach is necessary

I just started my locs and decided to.color my hair before starting them so happy I did. But for future if I want color my locs do I use a regular leave in conditioner and deep conditioner? I know when I colored my hair before I conditioned like crazy afterwards
What happens if I want to retouch my roots and give my already existing blonde a lift?
Still debating whether i should color my locks in the future. So far it seems like it might be a challenge on top of a challenge :)
