Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity[a] is a hack-and-slash video game developed by Omega Force, and published by Koei Tecmo in Japan and Nintendo internationally for the Nintendo Switch. It is an installment of Hyrule Warriors, a crossover between Koei's Dynasty Warriors and Nintendo's Legend of Zelda. The game acts as the prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017). Age of Calamity was released on November 20, 2020. Like the previous Hyrule Warriors game, Age of Calamity mixes the hack-and-slash gameplay of Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors series of video games with settings, characters, and other elements from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series. The basic gameplay is participating in large-scale battles against enemies, while also completing objectives, and taking strategic actions such as capturing bases and commanding troops.
In addition to retaining the combat, material crafting, and weapon-upgrade systems from Hyrule Warriors, the game incorporates environmental puzzle solving and the use of the Sheikah Slate tool and paraglider from Breath of the Wild. Players can upgrade their characters, complete missions and challenges, use resources to access new areas, build weapons, and cook foods that can be used as buffs. Weapons in this game are invulnerable and won't break over time, unlike in Breath of the Wild. In this video DreamcastGuy does a brutally honest review of Hyrule Wariors on Nintendo Switch. This includes gameplay, co-op gameplay, plot details, review of the story, and showing some boss battles. The game's map is similar to the one for Breath of the Wild. Players can choose stages from it and use the Sheikah Tower to explore between regions. Playable characters at launch are Link, Princess Zelda, the Four Champions: Daruk, Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa, Hestu, King Rhoam, The Great Fairies, Monk Maz Koshia, Terraku, Calamity Ganon,Master Kohga, Riju, Sidon, Teba, Yunobo and the Sheikah warrior, Impa. Besides the characters, players are also able to control the gigantic Divine Beasts to destroy large numbers of enemies.
The game will also feature compatibility with Nintendo's amiibo figures, with figures of the Four Champions re-releasing alongside the game. - เกม

Thought it was obvious to everyone that it is a hack and slash, that is why it is called hyrule warriors "it is a destiny warriors game with zelda". It is obvious to zelda fans that it's not a proper zelda game ever since it reveal.
People wanted the events of botw explained a bit more. Wasn’t too popular but people ultimately enjoyed The first. Wanted another one like that. Another is made. Story wise a very good situation for gameplay like this. It’s out now, so lots of people bitch about how it’s too similar. The usual... I’m very happy with it though.

I was starting to scratch my head as to why the mainline series wasn’t called The Legend of Link.. Then they just started implementing Zelda as a playable character or so it appears they’re now going in this direction!
I’ve said it for years, dynasty warriors isn’t for everyone. Personally I love these games!
Back when the ps2 was released I loved these games. I think stopped playing them as so many were released I just couldn’t keep up.
Same here, totally my jam. I only discovered that when I got Fire Emblem Warriors from the library on a whim: hadn't ever played a Fire Emblem or a Dynasty Warriors game, and it was huge fun.

I was kinda put off at first with the gameplay but after about an hour I got really into it. And the little guardian is adorable!
First Hyrule Warriors is a love letter to ALL of Zelda. This is a love letter to Breath of the Wild. It's a massively smaller game with less modes and a much much smaller roster of characters. This is hyperfocused at Breath of the wild fans
Sadly have to agree, I enjoyed the bosses in the original more as those did require a bit more thought and knowledge about the mechanics of them from the other Zelda games. But as said in this review the lore and story of this one makes a bit more sense as it is more focused.
Only complaint i have with this game is that the coop is split screen only. We pay for an online service and can't fucking use it. Again. They really need to support multi-player options at this point.
So true it amazes me how many games should have online multiplayer. We have the technology.
If it had online, we woulda bought two copies at my house.

Sooga and Astor gotta %100 be DLC characters. Theres no doubt about it. They already have actual movesets when you fight them in the story, So I think its highly likely.
Worth getting? Is this anything like Hyrule Warrios Definitive Edition? I heard that game was so-so...

Never tried any of warriors game before, but this I ordered immediately after seeing its announcement. The only thing that bothers me is the frame rate. Hope I'll enjoy it. Thanks for the honest review.
I've spent a couple of hours playing the demo on my Switch and maybe i need to give it more time but i just can't seem to get into it. It's ok but it just seems like constant button mashing.
From what I have seen its potentially the best musuo game ever made. I appreciate the review these games need the proper attitude and acceptance of the genre.

Nice thing about the zelda universe and switch titles in general is that once you beat it and get bored of it you can basically get your money back because they do hold there value.

Wow, there are actually people that still think this game is a prequel to botw? Santino is 100% correct, this game utilises time travel in order to change a few things (to keep it vague). It's not a prequel, it's a spin off.

This game is good for families. There are different difficulty options. I have a 5 year old who is actually doing really well with this game, on easy mode. He can’t read yet so it is really nice for him that the missions have those blinking lights on the map to tell him where he needs to go. The cut scenes are like mini movies for him. If he is having trouble on a level, we put it on two player and play together. He loves playing as divine beasts and he loves playing as characters like Hestu and the great fairies because it’s different. I love getting to know the champions more. I kind of wish BOTW 2 was a continuation of AOC’s timeline
New style of game? Its dynasty warriors part 48 with zelda graphics.
But it definitely is a different style of game for dynasty warriors in certain aspects because they also integrate many breath of the wild elements into the combat, compared to the basic hyrule warriors that just felt like DW with a zelda skin and lots of fan service
I swear, just the use of the sheikah slate runes and the magic wands really makes the combat more dynamic and varried (and the mini boss combat more engaging) and also small touch like jumbing of walls and paragliding or looking out for korok seeds
It still really is a DW game, but with more zelda infused into the chore of the game rather than just aesthetically, which does make it stand out

I hope this game is like the original hyrule warriors in a year or so with a shit ton of side and end game content

But I really liked the boss fight against Ravali and the cutscenes for it. He was such a great character to me and my favorite encounter so far. This was the last of the 4 guardian missions I played and I stopped after that. I really like this game. I like the boss fights so far. This is a really fun game.
Just picked it up today.. haven’t played it yet .. I also got COD COLD WAR.. which has taken 400000000 hours to download EVERY SINGLE MISSION and 800000000 GB of updates already! Jesus I miss the old days of online as an option
I love musou's if that are done right they are so addictive there fun hack and slash games I don't get why so many people expect a highly complicated game it's just simple fun

I feel like most people who don't like it expected this to by like BOTW but it was never marketed as that, its just a musou game like the first Hyrule Warriors but with the art style n story connections from BOTW.
Maybe for some people, but that's not my issue. I just hate what they did with the story. I knew exactly what the gameplay was going to be like (and knew that being a musou game meant that there would need to a some slight alterations to the original storyline). But I never expected them to fall so low as lazy, time travel bullshit.

I agree. AC Valhalla feels like as if Skyrim and Breath of the Wild had a baby. And there is a TON of things to do in it, it'll keep anyone busey for months. I was never a fan of the Warriors games myself. I always found them mindless and repetitive. Id play Age of Calamity for the story.

That is literally what it's called nowhere does it say legend of zelda in this game but hey multiple timelines are pretty much par for the course with this franchise

The problem is, the way this game was marketed by Nintendo themselves, which was as a prequel to the events of Breath Of The Wild.
They did this because they needed a big Christmas release and quite frankly, they didn't really have anything lined up. 2020 hasn't been the best of year's after all.
Nintendo needed to drum up some hype for what is really just another Hyrule Warriors game, which is a spin on Dynasty Warriors.
Basically this game was never going to live up to the hype Nintendo tried to create around it. It's a fun game but it's not a good game to carry the holidays.

There are SOOOO many things that SUCKS in this game! The reason I got this game was because people saying it was a prequel to Botw and it was adding “the story that Botw needed”. Botw is my favorite game of all time. I’ve had 1145h on Botw and I never really thought that it needed more story. Instead I’ve filled my album with pictures and recordings of me exploring in Botw. Even though I’ve never really liked strategy games or musu games, but I still have Age Of Calamity a try since it was in the same universe as Botw. First thing I do is put the difficulty on very hard. After that I kinda liked the game, but there was still something I disliked:
1. The controls has changed from Botw. For example when I’m doing a perfect dodge I press X instead of B. Just these small changes can really make you frustrated.
2. Only specific eatable items can heal you. I had 9 raw meats in my inventory so I press L and B but it didn’t heal. I got so confused that I tried to google it, but it took me ages of calamity to find a real answer.
3. You can’t change the difficulty. You can only change the difficulty in the main menu while you can only get to the main menu in the beginning of the game, before the cutscenes and everything.
4. This is the worst part of the whole game is: If you delete the software, which you can do if you select the game and press X or you could play another game and the software will be deleted automatically, the game will restart from the beginning and basically press New Game against your will. THE GAME IS FORCING ME TO NOT PLAY ANY OTHER GAMES BECAUSE THEN THEY WILL PRESS NEW GAME!!!!! I GUESS THEY KNEW THE GAME WAS SO BAD THEY’RE TRYING FORCE OTHER PEOPLE TO NOT EXPERIENCE BETTER GAMES BECAUSE EBERY GAME ON THE SWITCH IS BETTER THAN THIS GAME. I know this isn’t a Zelda game. The game was made by a company of fans. But Nintendo was still involved in the making of this game! They should’ve just taken fans that have over 1000h on Botw and turned them into the managers!!! Don’t forget to comment your opinions down below.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Pikmin 3 demo and was very disappointed when it ended. I just couldn't get into the Hyrule Warriors demo. Not a bad game just not for me
Any game where zelda is playable is a good game. I hope the rumors if her being playable in the sequel is true. Zelda is Nintendo best princess. If only team mario would do the same whit there princesses.
its not a zelda game its a button masher like god of war. probably a lot faster to make and probably using the same zelda engine.

I think the gameplay is fun but Dreamcastguy avoided taking about the frame rate of the game, especially in 2 players mode and then the story sets up an alternative timeline. So how does it “set things up for breath of the wild?” Don’t take this as hate, but I don’t feel this review is that “Honest” IMO. Avoiding crucial details is not being honest to your audience. I don’t know if you have to say mostly positive things to be on Nintendo’s good side ... idk (I hate to assume things). Yet, I do know that you can be brutally honest with other game reviews. So this review was somewhat disappointing compared to other reviews on this game on youtube.
I love breath of the wild. I was really looking forward to AOC story, but finding out it’s not a direct sequel to breath of the wild is super disappointing to me. I was not expecting a “happy alternate ending” Anyway, I’ll most likely wait for a price drop or just buy it used for a cheap price. Just for the gameplay alone.
People will hate the 1vs 1000 thing while they still play Gow will kratos vs the Monsters
Gow is a masterpiece never gets repetitive, this is repetitive as hell and I'm a huge zelda fan.
Difference is, gow has a compelling combat system. This genre is just slashing back and forth until your ultimate gauge is full. Rinse and repeat
Good, thorough review but I definitely get the impression that you picked it up thinking it was a legitimate Zelda game, and not just a Warriors game with a Zelda skin
After playing the demo its a lot more fun than BoTW which i found to be just boring all around.

I see that a lot of people think this game is a prequel to breath of the wild. It's not (kinda). The game is another timeline split. It's more of a "what if" type of game. I don't blame people for thinking this is a prequel because Nintendo made it seem like it was.
As someone who has literally beaten every Zelda game excluding the two on the phillip drive or game system i get this review. BOTW felt like the 80's Zelda in, here you go... now explore! This is a love letter and filler of sorts for the fans of this franchise. Made to play in another game style world. KUTOS DCG for reviewing this game its purpose not its mechanics.

I have heard a Rumor that a DLC will come to AoC that explains the Lose of the Champions and the Downfall of Hyrule Kingdom what leads to BotW in more Detail like the way everyone thought this Game will explain before the Shittwist! I really would appreciate that because this Game is good in every way but the Storytwist was Shit in my Opinion!
I think you need to be a real hardcore Breath of the Wild fan to be able to hate this game. It's just simple fun, plays really well and has some really cool cutscenes, imo. Yes, it's not as deep or open as Breath of the Wild, but it also never wants to be. I'm really enjoying it at the moment.
If you didn't like hyrule warriors or try it why would you even play this game?? XD I loved hyrule warriors this one seemed cool but the pacing is break neck. The tutorial introduces you to so many mechanics it's a bit overwhelming in my opinion.

I really don’t understand hate for this game. Sure it’s not my type of gameplay either, but it told you exactly what you were getting into before you went in. We even had hyrule warriors before so if you didn’t like that don’t buy this.

@@MaximillionPegasus88 The gameplay is what pushed me away from BotW (empty yet large open worlds, breakable weapons, etc).
However, always lots of enemies to fight in this game with weapons not being an issue. Then again, story is the least important aspect of a game to me.

I have it, I’m just trying to finish Yakuza 7. Then I realize I still got Miles Morales, ACV, Control, and many other games I need to play in the backlog. Lol!
in my opinion age of calamity is the best zelda game since twilight princess and vastly superior then the last two main line console zelda games for me theyre the worse in the entire series and even the cdi games take a huge dump on skyward sword and breath of the wild

I really believe gamers have been conditioned by American influencers to dislike Japanese genres of video games--Musou and RPGs, among the number.
As for difficulty, not every game needs to be Demon's Souls. In fact, most games don't require such cheap mechanics as is contained in that subgenre.
I’ve seen plenty of weird Zelda. Examples, Link’s Awakening and Wind Waker.
Personally I wouldn't call Wind Waker a "weird Zelda" but Link's Awakening definitely fits the bill, along with Majora's Mask and Tri Force Heroes

Idk man, to me all mosou games are repetitive hack n slashes just like avengers and godfall except more enemies. They look soooo boring. I’ve played dynasty warriors in the past and it’s always more of the same imo

@sadie adler yeah, I didn't get into it at all... I finished it but skipped one of the divine beasts as I just wanted to finish it and trade it in lol Twilight Princess is my personal favourite
@sadie adler just didn't like the mechanics, climbing towers to unlock map... Ubisoft games do that better, weapon durability... Dark souls did it better, the shrines got old quickly, the combat was utterly Boring, there was no sense of progression. Getting new weapons and shields felt pointless as they'd only break eventually. It's like they took all the things that Zelda games are known for and threw them out to cater to a more wider audience. In my Opinion it was a very dumbed down Zelda game. The world was vast and filled with nothing for most of it. The gannon blight bosses were pathetic, Zelda used to require figuring out to beat the bosses, they were puzzles themselves... BOTW made them so easy and so copy paste.
This game is not canon and the marketing by Nintendo was misleading. Fun game but it's not a prequel.
Canon to what? The zelda franchise or to BOTW? Do people gorget we had 3 separate timelines derived from 1 game and they were all "canon" to the zelda franchise

@@magevogue I think when people say that i think they mesn not canon to botw story since we are getting botw but you forget that team was involved with this game to the point that everything that happened got approved by them. I see this as another ocarina of time situation 1 game spawning multiple timelines I mean do people consider games like Link to the past, links awakening the og zelda game and all of those games not canon cause those games come from the timeline where links dies? I don't think this game will impact the botw 2 story maybe except the descendant of the champions

It's because it's not made by Nintendo I don't think Nintendo will allow a game to be considered canon unless it's 100% made and published by them. Regarding this game being canon or not I thought it was a prequel but it's not clear if it is or not. Nonetheless the game is still fun.
@@magevogue Again you can't this one isn't canon cause the zelda team and nintendo was definetly more involved than you think hell 70% of what happens in the game before Ganon arrives is still accurate botw recount of events fairly closely. Also You can use the argument of Nintendo didnt make it therefore not canon cause the Oracle of ages/ seasons games, minish cap and four swords are made by CAPCOM and not Nintendo and some have places in different official zelda timelines.
