    Your watercolor portraits remind me why I have always loved the “look“ of watercolors. I don’t know if I will ever get this good, but it is a lot of fun trying! 100 years ago when I was an art student, reference photos were a few and far between, there was no such thing as being online, and art supplies were ridiculously expensive. Now all of that has changed and even at my advanced age, I can learn. This is fun! 😁

    I love watching you paint. You put your colors down so boldly and there is hardly any lifting. You stand by your decisions. I admire that. The eyes are beautiful.

    How long did it take you to become comfortable with dropping in your colors so boldly when doing wet on wet? The confidence you have in your strokes is stunning. I am loving your videos so much and I hope to become as good as you one day.

      Thank you, Sally! Can't really tell you how long it took me - have been drawing and painting for too long already. I guess the confidence comes over the time by painting often and a lot. I think it's more the feeling about not being afraid to mess up a painting anymore - I just think, even when it doesn't work out I haven't lost anything, just have another experience where I learned something :)

    Watching this was one big "I wonder how she's going to make THAT look natural..." and few minutes later "...that's how". Let's just say that adding dark purples and blues on skin areas is scary for a beginner like me. Anyway awesome painting, looking forward to using this as a reference to mess around with colors more next time I'm doing a portrait!

    This video really shows how to do a watercolor portrait, Brown Madder for flesh tone? I'll have to remember that one. What brand of watercolor has this? M. Graham?
    Edit: I discovered that this is Winsor & Newton watercolor paint as Brown Madder can only be found in that line of watercolor. Another thing I noticed after watching the video more carefully is the artist used yellow ochre exclusively on the first base layer and only touching it up with browns or in this case Brown Madder. Once this was applied she never went back to that first layer for any touch ups. She left that layer alone. She only concentrated on the shadows, eyebrows. with blues, and red washes. So for the eyes, you need a light touch of Prussian Blue to tone down the white. Interesting. And she basically followed this formula...yellow for the first layer, brown/red for the second layer and finally blues for the third layer and the shadows.

      Hi Dorothy, thank you :) I use the Grumbacher Brown Madder.

      It's not only W&N that has Brown Madder. I use Renesans.

    I learnt a lot from this. Just one question: shouldn't there be a shadow where the nose meets the forehead (so basically where normally your glasses are sitting)? This way it looks as though the nose and forehead were on one plain.

    Wow! You keep Amazing me. I cant tell you, how often I would have thought I made a value or color mistake (if it were my art) and would have scraped the project into the garbage. But you are Amazing and so talented!!! I'm learning so much from your videos. I didnt know a person could lift so much color. I would be hyper-focused on the pool of paint when lifting my brush from the paper. But you do all of your stokes with purpose and control. The list goes on and on of what I'm learning.
    My frustration comes from the fact that I'm currently moving from one home to another (which we haven't found yet) and all of my art supplies are stored away and I can not try these new techniques. But you do a very good job showing the (what I thought were elusive) watercolor painting techniques. Thanks, Ill be watching more of these while we wait to find a home to buy.
    Just out of curiosity, what city are you near?

    What paper do you use? Maybe I don't wet mine enough? My paper dries so quickly, lifting off color isn't as effortless as you?

    I love this! I like your style of painting 😍Is there a reason why you used a flat brush in the beginning and later on a round brush?

    • @chkarron
      @chkarron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, I use flat brush's wide side to cover larger areas but also at the same time the thin edge for fine lines or combinations of both. Round brush is great for small details and flexibility.
