Lyrics:
I've been a bad bad girl
I've been careless
With a delicate man
And it's a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and
I want to
Suffer for my sins
I've come to you
'Cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don't know
Where I can begin
What I need is
A good defense
'Cause I'm feelin'
Like a criminal
And I need
To be redeemed
To the one
I've sinned against
Because he's all
I ever knew of love

Bless my parents who had to listen to 14 year old me sing this on repeat during our three day drive to Maine.
😁
Hilarious!
They loved the fuck outta you!!! Lmao
And now 14 year old girls are subjected to garbage like WAP
Love this song and her voice her style all of it
I remember her winning an MTV award, and standing on that stage saying "this world is bull shit". I thought that was awesome. She meant the music industry, the front the stars put on for every one to see, it's all just a bunch of fake ass bull shit. She told the kids out there watching, not to try and be like them or dress like them, be yourself. Cause it's all just bull shit.
People got mad at her for that. She became my hero.
I never understood why she got so much hate for her speech, especially since she was telling the truth. The music industry is incredibly fake.
I've watched that vid so many times and I still dk why ppl got mad. I can't comprehend it

the amount of power in her voice is INSANE.
She was only like 16 or 17 years old when she sang this to so yeah love it
her voice is legendary. gives me chills still to this day 20+ years after I first heard. real life siren if there ever was one.
Put it with the video and see it for the first time at 11 lol from then on I knew I had more needs than sports lol
I used to just lay on the floor in my bedroom and soak it in. I couldn’t explain how much her voice affected me
Closer to 30 years at this point. Crazy
the fact that she wrote this in 45 minutes after her label asked her for a "clearer single" my god

It's called having actual talent haha. Tell a pop star today to do the same thing, you would have to wait a few weeks for their producers to write it.

Good song? yes. Lyrical masterpiece? no.

"What would an angel say, the devil wants to know" such an amazing lyric. She was so talented ❤❤❤
she is very talented, she didnt died lmao
@@luisneto2565 apologies I meant she is talented.
Still is!
I'm pretty sure she still makes music lol
When I first heard that lyric, I assumed she borrowed it from someone else, so I googled to see who said it first. And the only person who said it was her - it's her original lyric.
Intense…dark…and mesmerizing, this singer is as lovely as an angel, a beautiful angel with dark wings and she’s got the dark and deep voice of one who has known sadness and pain. Her voice is slow and soulful and deep like a smoldering fire. She makes you feel her pain, and it hurts so sweetly.
Creep
@@brandonedwards1256 why is he a creep. he spoke as if he understands the emotion and he pain in the song , and he said it in a peotic way to express himself . it is so much better than saying '' i like it , its great'' which is what most boring comments say on many songs of this era. you know actaully , when you insult someone for no reaosn it says more about you than the person you are insulting.
His poetic words sound like he’s leaving the ultimate compliment. He’s just getting the vision.
Embarrassing
No teenager should be able to write music this sophisticated. Fiona is a goddess
a teenager shouldnt be in this video
It was the heartbreaking things that she had to deal with at such a young age that made her able to write like this. Sad.
Wait how old was she here???

I swear, unless you lived during this time, this exact vibe is hard to understand. The gross plywood and green carpet is very 70s but mixed with the heroin chic dirty vibe of the 90s alt scene, it gives a very specific party scene that was definitely not fun.
As a hardcore 90’s grunge baby, I concur.
the late 60s early 70s styles were trendy in the mid to late 90s, the way the 90s are trendy today.in 1997 I wore wool skirts, knee highs bell bottoms and platforms. favorite artists were oasis, fiona apple, bush, green day and the beatles again! also, every teen had a lava lamp and beaded doorway, favorite movies were austin powers, scream, slums of beverly hills. modern heroin chic ala kate moss /super models were also in, this video definitely has both elements.
yep..
You are so right about this time. Heroin Chic culture was also on the Runways too!
The other video with the same atmosphere to me is Whiskey in the jar by metallica
Everyone’s talking about her incredible, haunting voice and undeniable talent, but what about her stunning beauty? She had it all.

It's hard to believe Fiona's peers called her "dog" and bullied her at school. Like many of us she had a hard time growing up. She is utterly stunning and still is. I could see her being a damn good actress as well, I kinda wish she had done some acting
@Kai McCook Why don't you just say Snoop Dogg?

She who laughs last , laughs best. She's a sweetie !

We need music like this now. Well composed, well performed, raw, well written, unapologetic.
Man, when this came out on mtv and vh1, I remember how everybody flipped their lids. Some people insisted it was softcore porn, or that it was her coded cry for help to escape a much older abusive partner. Now it's absolutley tame and Fiona is rightfully a legend in alt rock. A trailblazing track with scary good marketing.
Tame, yet concerning how rail-skinny she was here. She had an eating disorder.

The sad thing is, she was in the midst of anorexia when she wrote this, and at the time, few people knew (including myself). It’s so easily recognizable now. I hope Fiona has healed since then ❤️
So clear now... so under weight. Hope she’s doing better now too!! Love this song
I thought she was just heroine chic. But gives more depth.
She wasn't anorexic. She was just depressed and self-loathing, something she suffered from since the rape that occurred when she was 12. Anorexia, and the mental process behind it, is entirely different.
@@anabanana5002 she did have anorexia though
People tried to talk about it back then and they got shut down saying they were judging her because not everyone can put on weight. One of my fav Fiona songs contains a thinspo slogan ‘hunger hurts but starving works’ ... I love her but yeah a lot of people knew, they just couldn’t talk about it. And that’s problematic because I feel many people, like the director of this video, saw it and exploited it because heroin chic was cool

I’ve discovered the joy of watching the music videos of the songs I know and love, songs that are a part of my soul, songs that have been etched on my heart for decades. It’s lovely and nostalgic, makes me love and appreciate the past -and solid music - with a new appreciation for the music by watching a time capsule music video I’ve never seen but always known. 💛
This is weirdly captivating to me because it reminds me of many of my childhood memories, especially growing up in the 2000's and being the daughter of a college student with a lot of alt friends. Everybody knew to keep it classy around me and I rarely saw the sight of inappropriate stuff like nudity or drugs, but it was still fascinating for a small child. I've been to house parties that looked somewhat like this, down to the gross carpet, the jazzy music, the old eletronic paraphernalia and the outfits. My mother also used to have a striking similarity with Fiona back then, and watching this transports me to a time where I wasn't exactly at ease, but still felt safe. I'm happy I've found a song that encapsulated such a specific feeling and memory, Fiona is a creative genius
Even better now than when it debuted. Fantastic and haunting voice, complemented with superb drums, absolutely world-class mastering, and in the end Fiona.

this song is literal magic, its a phenomenal song that i feel represents passion and love in general, the tenderness and the safety, the comfort of the touch of your loved one, the ups and downs, the fears and insecurities, and how it all fades away the second you're with them, its just a really personal song for me and thats what it makes me feel, it really helps me calm down when i feel a bit worse and cant be together with her, its just really important and meaningful to me, god sent song
It represents selfishness as she craves and loves to have a lot of fun but not only with the men she loves (her boyfriend that would be) and the guilt is chasing her mind, so she needs a "good defence", she needs "to come clean", to help her before she to atone, she needs to justify what she does, and thats why she feels like a criminal, cause shes playing with the feelings of her love because she craves sex. Thats why you see her with many people in the video

Red Ogre That's a fairly recent trend to appeal to vinyl collecting hipsters and midlife crisis dads. Vinyl and casette tapes both pretty much died out during the 90s with the widespread adoption of the CD format.
I think this video is brilliant. It says so much without showing anything
This is so incredibly 90s. I miss this vibe so much. I’ve never seen this attitude again in a music video.
Despite being less explicit than a lot of popular music videos today, I feel like the rawness of Criminal makes it hit a lot harder.
The depiction of female sexuality here is really, really complex. There are moments of brazen seductiveness intercut with moments of total indifference to the camera intercut with moments of intense vulnerability. FA’s youth and her sickly thinness are both ever-present specters that suffuse the entire video, yet both are treated as merely incidental. And the way it’s filmed makes the whole thing feel simultaneously performative and deeply honest.
IMO this video is provocative in the truest sense. Not in the sense that it’s meant to be titillating, but in the sense that it’s meant to make the viewer question what exactly they are watching and how exactly they feel about it.
See these are things I could feel but not understand, I didn't know what I was seeing or why I was feeling what I was feeling. Thank you for explaining it this way.

It also looks so great, visually, even now almost 25 years later. Shot on early digital?
History will treat Fiona Apple very well, as it already is beginning to. She is arguably one of the best artists of the mid-to-late 90s and and early 2000s, and was creating and producing music that still manages to sound unique and distinct, almost 20 years later. Get past the feet, barely clad bodies and the writhing about on the floor in underwear in the video and focus on her songwriting, singing and the fierce bass and piano underneath this song, and it would be hard to say that anyone has been able to replicate Fiona's sound.
I was too young to experience her when she first hit the scene, but listening now, it's hard to not to be blown away. She released three amazing albums and was anything but a one-hit-wonder. She kept innovating and moving forward to her own sound and vision. Every single one of her albums were beautiful little masterpieces.
I love her. Because she is one-of-a-kind. And her music was the same.
+Cassie Piper I love her too great music, that is always something refreshing because it really seems like she just doesn't give a fuck about selling anything, and does music the way it should be, straight from the soul. All of her albums are unique, and different and I feel them. She is a Boss

As a songwriter myself, I studied the lyrics three times while watching this ingenious - though not the least bit subtle - imagery of this masterfully risqué video that gets so far close to, but - somehow, amazingly - never "crossing the line."
I read the words of a woman in private religious confession after having succumbed to the temptation of the proverbial forbidden fruit. She realizes what her deeds prove of her own self-image and the threat they create to the only committed relationship she has ever had.

Nobody uses music to express their real emotions anymore, unless it's about sex and getting laid.
+Carry On I thought if Niki manj or however you spell her name when I read that comment lol
+Omar Garcia Taylor a great lyricist really?Thats funny!!!
+47imagine: The 90's were the last decade that music was actually good. It's a sad fact, but an undeniable reality.
+Rebecca J. Riley I know, god I miss the 90's!
Her piano playing is excellent
@Jeanne R. I love it
Actually she didn't play tge piano in this one but i have heard her play and yes she is truly phenomenal
Love her music!
Am I the only one who absolutely loves that interior design? 🤩✨😁
How on earth can this be over 25 years old? Just sounds amazing!
Cuz it came out in the 90's
❤👏
Because pop music hasn't really improved in the last 25 years
@@randomstuff5338 ❤👏🙌
thanks now i feel real old. Being 70 years old I considered this new music. lol
Imo, this lady is WORLDS beyond Cher & Brittney. The industry did her wrong because she IS REAL.
"Joe! Open the garage!"
*"I've earned this private time!"*
Yes!!!! Does no one else get this?
Im here because of that too.
OMG i am laughing so hard ahahahah, i am here because of it
Yes haha
SAME
Fiona is a complete superstar 🎉🎉🎉
The lyrics of this song are AWESOME to me , you say stuff like how I think , or how someone tells me this or that like it's my fault they are ignorant about ME and my life or Others similar to me. You seem cool to me from what I can perceive here . I support you and those who are just living the best way they can with what they have . Thank YOU for your effort this song is special to me . 💚✌!
I was in high school when this came out. Now that im almost turning 40, i heard it again being sang on AMERICAN HORROR STORY. I instantly remembered Fiona Apple depite forgetting the title of the song. I still love this song.
Have you listened to Fiona's album "Fetch The Bolt Cutters" from 2020? If not, check it out.
lol same
Teens and 40 somethings. Seems ironic and suspicious.
Love the concept of this video. How the whole thing is like a photograph
Yeah. I wonder if Terry Richardson directed this video because I looks just like one of his photographs.
It reminds me of old true crime shows where you see the old videos and photos of the crime scene or suspects or evidence. But instead it's like we are seeing it like its evidence being photographed before the death takes place. Because its eerie to see her so skinny and hollow. I suppose shes supposed to look sexy but somehow the angles of her body and the camera manage to catch more of the horror of it than the beauty or glamor of it. Like its intentional.
@@randallcox2238 - Directed by Mark Romanek, probably best known for directing Johnny Cash - Hurt.
Mugshot
I was wondering can anybody tell me what style pants the guys are wearing in this like at 1:01 and especially at 1:58-59 , whats that like a retro Vegas funk, lol . Seriously they are an old school polyester rocker ?? , If anyone has any ideas, thanks David
We were living through the best era of music and we didn't know it.
I'm sure my mother loved me belting out this song at age 13 lol
Fiona rules. Don't judge her past. Despite all she's been through she still put out a killer album. Just let her be. If you don't like her then just move on. Fiona my fave forever
Very well said... I agree
"A" killer album? What about the other four?
You know this was her best pop album. All the Alben are much better, but sadly people don't like her.
@@nadinetarmac4218 i think it’s because they don’t want their pop heroes to have real problems. It distracts from the fantasy.
All these years later, Fiona has been proven correct, over and over. It’s all bs.
That being said, Thanks Fiona!!
This comment hurt. I love this song, the video is mediocre at best, but she is phenomenal. That voice is beyond anything. And now I unfortunately am hinted that she's been through crap. That voice deserved so much more. Owe I hurt, and yes, I hardly listen to music. Her voice was........ awesome.
