I can see exactly why Hi-Fi Rush's version went with the more spy thriller "femme fatale" take on this song, it feels like such a natural extension and direction for a cover. Both versions are absolutely amazing and complement each other so well.
Yeah, this and Free Radicals having fuller/more defined instrumentation to help the player maintain BPM were necessary for making them work in-game. They both certainly already worked in concept, execution just needed a little extra push.
This song is just a master class in complex arrangements with the syncopated drums, those amazing slightly atonal minor and major chord progressions along with hir punctuated and driving vocals.

I am so alone in this world without any Fiona fans. I only know a few who love her music. Fiona is so legendary in her songwriting and is art. It's so stupid I know
She was a loose canon and we can't have that in music today......lol She could weave circles around the press and other " Artists" today ..... She was a little too real
@@stevenmorris2234 why is taylor always dragged under the bus? She’s a songwriter and a guitarist, yeah she’s by far no fiona but drag someone else for once. It’s funny how Taylor is included in every conversation, you would be surprised to find out she’s actually a bit talented. Unlike e.g. Selena etc
This is my favorite Fiona Apple song. I love the erratic feel of it. Her new album Fetch The Bolt Cutters has the same feel. So far Shameika is my fave.

I've always loved this song but I never analyzed the lyrics like I am now and wow! She's such a brilliant woman and the honesty is something we rarely get to hear these days.
She could make an incredible song from the bridge of this song. Not that this song isn't good as a whole, but that bridge with its soul infusion is just, damn.
Same. I just discovered her because I've been rewatching Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography, and he's directed a number of her videos (including this one) and wow she's quite a talent.
0:45 Definitely my favorite Fiona verse. One of my favorite verses of any song! And the wicked smile she gives in the video. It's soul crushing! I LOVE IT!
This is so amazing, her voice almost scattered, it sounds at first, until you hear her control, not weird but so dominant and turning all fluid and controlled into magnificent power is astounding. What else can you call Fiona Apple except incredible.
I love that the audio/video is out of sync purposely at the beginning of the first verse during "You think you know how crazy i am." Its gives me a creepy, but at the same time, a great feeling. My mood always improves when watching this video.
I assume you are just saying that based on emotion. You are simply wrong. Amongst serious music critics and lovers she is one of the most loved and respected lyracists alive. If you asked for a list of the best 10 lyracists you would find her in that list much more often than not.
@@kateluvshugz Yeah getting sick of people using the word "underrated" incorrectly. My god, the woman has made the top 20 US charts for every album she has produced.
Actually there is a lot more to fiona apple than just her voice. She writes all of the music and lyrics herself. Unlike Beyonce and the stupid crap we see so much of today. She is the real deal. Complete, sincere, and competent. A true musician and never given enough credit for it. So many female musicians need to learn from her and not from fake pop music where the "singer" adds or merely changes one or two words of the song and is credited as a songwriter. Tell all your friends who Fiona Apple is and let it be seen what a real performer can do.
@@DonnieIsNotAmerican again another male dragging females, why didn’t you pick bieber who straight out sucks? Beyonce’s an incredible vocalist and performer, I personally think her songs are shallow and yeah she’s been told to act sexy like all managers tell their women products, but shut up already. No woman needs to learn or shit, there are different stuff in life and you cherry pick the best. I thought like you before, but Beyonce is simply appealing to an audience, and Fiona could never because women need to be more like beyonce to be famous
This song is so fucking incredible, the transition at 1:20 is pure genius. And then at 2:25... fuck it, we don't need a transition, let's just build back up from scratch. This is a masterpiece. The lyrics, the vocals, the composition, the instrumentation... So mad at my 13-year-old self for being so misogynistic in my musical taste. I assume this single got decent time and I just completely ignored it, even though 10-year-old me adored Fiona Apple. I stumbled on this track two weeks ago and have listened to it at least once or twice every day since. I actually just listened to it four times in a row a few days ago, just trying to hear whatever I might be missing on a casual listen. Damn, Fiona. I'm so excited to continue digging through your catalog. Thank you so fucking much for everything you've created, you're a blessing
All that there is to say about Fiona Apple is that so many of the female singer-songwriters and female musicians of the last 20 years (including today's artists) would not exist without the brilliance of Fiona Apple.
This was so amazing to hear on the radio. It really stood apart from everything else being played. I still remember this being in heavy rotation around Halloween 1999...& then seemingly disappeared almost overnight.
My god, this song blew me away hearing it late at night as a teen. I recorded it off the radio. It's tune was so haunting. The time rocked and haunted me. Puts me back in time every time I hear it. I love this song. Women never rocked as hard and amazing as they did in the 90's. I'm going to make sure I see you in concert when this pandemic let's up.
The killer time signature of this song alongside the melody and progression just shows you what a monster talent she was-add CRIMINAL and SHADOW BOXER and man--amazing.
I was lucky to see her in 1997 in Madison Wisconsin. I was 17, and I still have images of her on stage with the piano. Oh how I miss good music, and the best decade of my life!! 🎶
I haven't heard this song until I played Hi-Fi Rush, but goddamn, the devs pulled out this old gem and found it an amazing home. The game uses a cover, but still a gem nonetheless.
In the late 90s I didn't know a young woman who didn't love Fiona Apple, or a young man (besides me) who admitted knowing who she was. She captured a moment for women, and men tried to ignore it.
Proud Fiona devotee since middle school! 2003...Yes I was a tortured 6th grader! Not sure what happened but I graduated from Britney Spears straight to Fiona Apple, starting with the album Tidal with obsession growing from there. Fiona played a major role in shaping who I am today, for better or for worse lol. She is so talented, it gives me hope for humanity

I cant believe Fiona isn't more respected she is fucking amazing.
D TW I know right. It drives me crazy. I am getting so sick of Taylor Swift getting all the attention.
A lot of my friends don't even know who Fiona is. I am so alone in this world without any Fiona fans.
I only know a few who love her music. Fiona is so legendary in her songwriting and is art.
It's so stupid I know
+D TW She would be more respected by the "main stream" if she didn't make the music she does. I'm glad she does.
She was a loose canon and we can't have that in music today......lol She could weave circles around the press and other " Artists" today ..... She was a little too real
@@raindeerprojekt4119 That's why she was so ALLURING! If everyone was too normal, this 🌎 would be too boring!
Mine is heavy balloon and ladies and rack of his and under the table🦋🖤
@@amisha25211 Good choices👍☺
@@amisha25211 If you ever have any music that you think I might have never heard. I have this Playlist called Suggested 2 Me Shared With U where I place songs that people have suggested to me. I ask anyone to feel free to check it out and continue suggesting.
I also love Shameika as well as On I Go.
@@vicky8867can I suggest a song? And where is this playlist on your channel what is it titled?
i don't get how people can reveal so much of themselves in a piece of art and aren't scared to let people hear or see it
I've always loved this song but I never analyzed the lyrics like I am now and wow! She's such a brilliant woman and the honesty is something we rarely get to hear these days.
Fiona is amazing and the drums and piano chords in this song are insane together
I love how her eyes look like she wants to eat my soul.
I love how unconventionally cool she is. Just, unique. Many thumbs up for Apple!
That breakdown at 1:23 is what REALLY makes this song...🔥🔥🔥🔥
To me, this is her best song and album.
She could make an incredible song from the bridge of this song. Not that this song isn't good as a whole, but that bridge with its soul infusion is just, damn.
What a charming woman and song. I'm happy to have found about this artist in my adulthood, better impact.
Same. I just discovered her because I've been rewatching Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography, and he's directed a number of her videos (including this one) and wow she's quite a talent.
Agreed. I was never a big fan of her work when I was a teen but listening to it years later now in my 30's I really enjoy her work.
The XXI Darnet im a teen
Her mother is an artest lol
Named after a fruit
0:45 Definitely my favorite Fiona verse. One of my favorite verses of any song! And the wicked smile she gives in the video. It's soul crushing! I LOVE IT!
This is so amazing, her voice almost scattered, it sounds at first, until you hear her control, not weird but so dominant and turning all fluid and controlled into magnificent power is astounding.
What else can you call Fiona Apple except incredible.
Happy 25th anniversary to When the Pawn, the first but not last five-star Fiona Apple masterpiece.
I love that the audio/video is out of sync purposely at the beginning of the first verse during "You think you know how crazy i am." Its gives me a creepy, but at the same time, a great feeling. My mood always improves when watching this video.
The drumming on this track is superb. Fiona is a genius goddess, its all perfect
i love this song, Fiona's music was a one of a kind. I still remember her iconic speech at the 1998 mtv vmas, so true to herself.
c'mon this song is a classic. she's so fvkin amazing. huge respect.
One of the the most talented, grounded and beautiful women that’s ever graced us with her existence
shes insane. i love her.
She's probably the most underrated singwriters ever, literally. Like since Lennon and McCartney or Freddy Mercury and Brian May. Just unreal.
She's no longer underrated since Pitchfork made twice her fanbase due to their trick with 10.0 for FTBC
Jesus, what a voice! such talent.
+SmokeStack already do lol I've had to buy buy her collection a few times now because of lending it out
Don't lend it out anymore lol
@@DonnieIsNotAmerican again another male dragging females, why didn’t you pick bieber who straight out sucks? Beyonce’s an incredible vocalist and performer, I personally think her songs are shallow and yeah she’s been told to act sexy like all managers tell their women products, but shut up already. No woman needs to learn or shit, there are different stuff in life and you cherry pick the best. I thought like you before, but Beyonce is simply appealing to an audience, and Fiona could never because women need to be more like beyonce to be famous
@@scribbinthescribe1126 Thank you for your service.
"My pretty mouth will frame the phrases that will disprove your faith in man". I just had to highlight that line. She's one helluva writer.
2:25 is so good i cant
The bridge in this song is phenomenal. I can listen to it on hooktheory over and over.
I love Fiona's honesty and melodies. It feels so good to be understood.❤
It's fucking awesome how she slowly and meticulously cleans the lense and then immediately and instantly undoes the whole process
I practice drumming to this, and I will never fall out of love with Fiona Apple.
This still resonates with me every time I hear it. It's so quirky and cool. Make no mistake, this song is a warning.
The only thing more beautiful, mesmerizing and hypnotic than Fiona's voice are her eyes. I could get easily lost in them.
god i love fiona apple
She is a wizard of words .... and her own person. SOOO special Fiona!
WHAT IS THAT MELODY?? 😍😍😍😍😍
Where did Fiona go? Her voice is amazing! The notes she so effortlessly glides thru.
Im just discovering this and havent seen anythinf so amazing in years i think! And the time period you mention is right around when i was born!
'Cause I'm tired of whys, choking on whys,
Just need a little because, because.
No one writes lyrics like Fiona. She's a genius.
I feel like she's so cute to the case that she needs less to say more.
All I need is a little because because. I feel the same way.
My favorite part of the song
Crystal Aggrey of which one
Her eyes are captivating. She isn't anything but honest. She knows she is not suited for a relationship. Jonathan Ames can't say he wasn't warned.
Ive been here since the beginning. Fiona is only getting better. Suberp, sublime, succint.
Man, I love it when this song is playing while I'm fighting a blondie with robotic wings at a concert!
Fiona will never lose the iconic place she carved out in Music history
The single handed most pure talent I've ever come across in all my years. So happy she fought through a lot to keep going. Love you Fiona!
She's DEFINITELY amazing, genius skilled, raw. . This girls helped me out since tidal, forever a favorite
All these years and years; Fiona Apple still rules my heart.
When I first heard this song I would play it over & over & over...
"again again again again again"
I've only just discovered her songs , how did I miss out on this brilliant singer ???
She is a creative artist not for everyone .only the ones that know great talent. To bad for those that don't realize great talent.your missing out on masterful pieces of creativity.
an all timer song. what a vocal. and matt chamberlain on drums is so wonderful here
wow so much funk! This is one of my favs percussionists is amazing!Funky pocket solid musician-ry!
lyrics
I let the beast in too soon
I don't know how to live without my hand on his throat
I fight him always and still
O darling, it's so sweet
You think you know how crazy
How crazy I am
You say you don't spook easy
You won't go
But I know
And I pray that you will
Fast as you can, baby
Run, free yourself of me
Fast as you can
I may be soft in your palm
But I'll soon grow hungry for a fight
And I will not let you win
My pretty mouth will frame the phrases
That will disprove your faith in man
So if you catch me trying to find my way into your heart
From under your skin
Fast as you can, baby
Scratch me out, free yourself
Fast as you can
Fast as you can, baby
Scratch me out, free yourself
Fast as you can
Sometimes my mind don't shake and shift
But most of the time, it does
And I get to the place where I'm begging for a lift
Or I'll drown in the wonders and the was
And I'll be your girl, if you say it's a gift
And you give me some more of your drugs
Yeah, I'll be your pet, if you just tell me it's a gift
'Cause I'm tired of whys, choking on whys
Just need a little because, because
I let the beast in and then
I even tried forgiving him, but it's too soon
So I'll fight again, again, again, again, again
And for a little while more
I'll soar the uneven wind, complain and blame the sterile land
But if you're getting any bright ideas, quiet dear
I'm blooming within
Fast as you can, baby wait watch me, I'll be out
Fast as I can, maybe late but at least about
Fast as you can leave me, let this thing run its route
Fast as you can, fast as you can
Fast as you can, fast as you can
Love that beat, then that half time drop. Rock on girl!
Check out her live version when she messes up the timing
This song is timeless for me. It's on constant repeat.
one of the best songs / music videos of all times. every lyric is just so good. I must have listened to this a thousand times
You have always been one of my favorite artists of all time!
the bridge is very godly wow im obsessed
