You know,I feel really sorry for that girl for what had happened. But what came to mind at the end of it all. If she had a bad scalp in the beginning. Maybe she KNEW that what she was asking for was not possible. I am just speculating.
And is it possible that this hair stylist was one of many (customers dont tell you everything|
stylists that she had reached out to and refused service , where as only this one accepted the appointment. I am sure if that case was deeper looked into besides what we see on the screen
it wouldve cast a wider picture.

I’m not black, but I’ve always thought many black girls have braids that look painfully tight. I’ve never been sure if it’s just appearing that way or if they really are. I can’t help but think it’s got to be uncomfortable to sleep on every night, or it’s stressful on hair roots.

I'm a black woman that's been doing braids since age 12. I'm nearly 60. One thing I can tells you ..if it hurts ..it's too tight. Braids do not have to hurt to be effective.

While I understand this to be true. No one has ever told me that. I have been told It is supposed to be tight, so it stays in, that means it was done right. It will only hurt for a bit, it's supposed to hurt, it should hurt. I wanted to have braids by a professional ( my mom braided my hair ) but that is what scarred my away.

@@senselessplace I was tender headed so I was told to learn to do my own braids which I did. I quickly learned that I could slide in a comb....braid on top of the comb as tight as I wanted ...then slide the comb out. It served as a spacer. Later I learned to braid at at tension...on tight but didn't come aloose either ....and that's how I do it to this day. Not tight, no breakage, an no discomfort.

When my daughter was around 5 yrs old I let someone put braids in her hair. They were so tight that what looked like whiteheads(pimples) came up all over her scalp, within hours of being done, and my daughter said her head hurt. I had to take every braid out as soon as I saw that. I never let that person touch her head again.

The audacity for the judge to say that she had a dirty scalp and poor hair hygiene when that was clearly either scalp psoriasis, or maybe even eczema (I’m leaning towards the former), is so wrong on so many levels. Medical issues ≠ uncleanliness. What a wild thing to say.

That is very clearly scalp psoriasis. I have it and it leaves that scaly white plaques that yeah, can peal and get flaky. It's your immune system going overboard and causing skin cells to rapidly form over an area your body thinks is 'damaged'. Could be anything from a small scratch to a pimple to a sunburn. Anything that may 'damage the skin' your body sends your immune system to try and mend and then its like there's no 'off' switch to tell it to stop. The psoriasis its self can cause further irritation that yet, much be 'mended' and that is what makes it spread. I am 70+% covered today and it is everywhere, and started in my scalp.

Any hairstylist who knows what they are doing wouldn't braid hair that tightly. Also, if in their professional opinion, the client's scalp is not in good condition, they will tell the client that the service cannot be done until the scalp gets healthier.
My hair had some damage, and I went to see a hairstylist for option. She suggested a weave, because i would let my natural hair rest and become healthier, but suggested I first cut my hair because I had a lot of dead and damged ends. She then told me to give it 3 months, then come back. I followed her instructions, and 4 months later I was back in her chair. When she did my first weave it felt too tight, and my scalp seemed a bit swollen. I called her and she had me come in the next day. She inspected the hair, and decided to redue the entire thing (no cost to me) so I would not have any folical damage. She redid it, and it was perfect after. She redid my weave every 12 weeks for 2 years and each time I was amazed at how much healthier my natural hair started looking. When we started my hair was chin length, and when she took the weave out for the last time my natural hair was thick, healthy, and about 5 inches below my shoulders. Compared to what my hai looked like before and after I cried at the end of my treatment. She did such a wonderful job that that last day I tipped her $1,000 because saed my hair. This was 6 years ago, and she and I still talk and I hve referred many friends to her, because she is worth every penny spent on her work.

I was JUST talking to my daughter about how braiding hair too tightly can lead to hair loss and can possibly cause bleeding/damage to the scalp!
I had a girl braid my hair in middle school for cheer. She had braided it so tightly my scalp had bled. She said, "It was normal for your scalp to bleed when you do braids." I looked at her and said, "I've never had my scalp bleed and anyone who's told you that it's normal will have you bald before you graduate high-school. " I immediately took the braids out and never let her braid the teams hair again. It took a couple of weeks for my scalp to heal!

You should look up another famous case of a woman who was used to getting braids and weaves, and how she ended up having the middle of her scalp fuse together because the stylist who braided her hair did the middle braids so tight, her scalp literally fused to itself and caused alopecia areata in about the same spot as this client. Too tight something isn't right is a great explanation so people who haven't had braids understand that there's a difference in discomfort that will go away, versus pain that only gets worse.

As a "stylist" part of her job is to consult with and educate the client. When she saw the condition of her hair/scalp to begin with she shouldn't have proceeded. She knew better, but then again maybe she didn't. If she's LICENSED she should know better!! I'm glad the victim won, shes absolutely a victim of her NEGLIGENCE AND IGNORANCE.

I learned the hard way too. I just stopped getting my hair done. I was always coming back with a burned scalp. Thinking 'Pain is beauty'. Then decided $100 was too much for burns and a weeping scalp. But stylists don't care if you are in pain. When she said it hurt she should have taken the braids out! Not told her to use a compress later. It's not supposed to hurt. The stylist should have stopped. Some people are tender headed and as a stylist she should have at least known that and adjusted her braiding to cope.

I lost my edges in 24 hours. It took a few months to grow my hair back. I haven’t had it braided since.

My best friend called me up bawling early one morning. I couldn't understand what was wrong and I could make out is that she was begging me to help her. I jumped in the car and sped over as fast as I could. When I got to her house, she was a mess. Her hair was mostly up in braids and a snarled mess was over to the side.
She'd had her braids done and when she got home the pain just got worse and worse. She was scrambling most night to get them out. She probably had well over a hundred tiny braids all over her head and she couldn't even begin to work on the ones she couldn't see. I dropped my purse, grabbed a comb and got to work on her. Between the two of us we had her head cleared after a couple more hours. As we got them out, the pain got so much better and by the time we were done she was just exhausted and spitting mad.
Apparently, you can't always tell they're too tight right away. Some braiders are just rough, so there's some expectation of pulling. But when the blood supply is being cut off, it can happen gradually. She hurt some when she left. A few hours went by and it was hurting more. She took tylenol and tried to go to bed and woke up after midnight in screaming pain.

When it came to process type appointments, I never told my stylist exactly what I wanted or whose hair I wanted to emulate, I only gave her general ideas and asked her where she’d go with it. Or we’d look through the look books salons had and see which ideas would work on my type of hair. If I had a wild idea, she’d either say, “Let me do some digging and see what we can do at your next appointment.” or “That won’t work on your hair because your hair is .” I knew to believe her and trust her judgment.

I had this happen to me.. i trusted the stylist. I had an engagement 2 days later with no other options for styles, so i could not take the style down right away. When she braided my hair, the braids were not tight. However, while she was sewing the weave in, it became tighter and tighter. I let her know it was too tight and she sprayed my hair with oil sheen and told me to use hot towel for compress and it should loosen up. Two days later after my engagement, i cut the weave out, but the damage was done. I lost a patch of hair, in front of my head that hasn't grown back. This was 2016.. i never got another sew in hair style. I took pictures of my scalp and sent it to the stylist, she apologized and told me to get some hair growth oil. 😌 I understand her pain. 😢😢

yea, even disregarding the fact she shouldn't have done it, when the client contacted her about still being in pain, she should have done more to ensure everything was fine, knowing the clients scalp was in a poor condition at the start.
Also, just saying "oh that will be difficult" maybe mentioning possible damage can mean nothing if it's not explained why or the possible consequences. And hey, it could even turn into more money for the stylist, "hey your scalp isn't ready for this, buy these products from my store/invest in my services so we can get your scalp to a healthy state and then I can do this procedure for you" I mean sure, there will be those who won't accept that, but probably far fewer than if you just say, "nope, too difficult"

    What:
-4 quicker less invasive options are more expensive than getting a sewn in weave? Placing it out of the client's budget.
-She worked on the clients hair even though she had scalp issues.
-The sewn in weave took only an hour even with washing the clients hair?
    - the client told her the weave was too tight, and she said it was normal, put a warm compress on jt?
It all sounds negligent on the hairstylist's part.
I've had my fair share of too tight braids, I was told it was because I was tender-headed; small bumps appeared around my hairline. never went back those stylists again.

I've been getting my hair dyed purple at a salon for about 4 years now and when I know I have an appointment scheduled, if I have a flare up I'll make sure I use my medicine on my scalp to treat the flare up so that my scalp is in the best condition it can be before I get my hair bleached & dyed... and my stylist uses a brand of bleach that is formulated to be more gentle on the scalp so that it's not as irritating as other harsher brands (it also helps that it doesn't take very long for my natural hair color to lift to a 9/10 level with just one application of bleach for about 30-40 minutes)...

As a very white woman with slightly wavy hair, I've always been under the impression that "braids are supposed to hurt" yet it never made sense to me. Braids are supposed to be protective styles, yet if they're so tight they hurt, wouldn't that hinder growth and nullify protection?? Only in the last couple years have I noticed other black women speaking out about this and I think it gained momentum after a slew of braid videos going viral of children crying (even screaming) about how tight their braids were. The amount of "experts" saying they were overreacting and that braids aren't or can't be painful blew my mind. It was truly sad seeing those kids in pain and being told "it's normal" and to stop being "dramatic".

Yeah that wasn't a bad scalp issue, damage from braids that are too tight is a well known risk of getting bad braider. I agree wigs are the way to go and not glued down either, pins that you can remove daily so your hair can be washed and your scalp can relax at night. So many of these women are going bald from the pretend hairstyles, sleeping on the braids, hanging weight on them for weeks at a time. Constant tension. They want it tight because they think it's going to last longer but the stylist should tell them no.

  • @LRWdesign

Bleaching fails, braid fails, poor hair and scalp maintenance. 🤦‍♀ I agree a professional should step in and say no and a client should be open to the opinion of the professional and not ‘I want what I want give it to me’. I normally always wear a pixie but I got a perm once when my hair was shoulder length and ended up getting a pixie cut again because the salon fried my hair and it all broke off an inch from the scalp. I’m lucky my scalp wasn’t damaged. I never got another perm again and I stay with a long pixie cut because it suits me best and it’s very low maintenance. If I want a change, I’ll buy wigs. It’s so sad when people fail to have good conversations or are not open to communication. I think the stylist just was like ‘I’m tired of arguing with her and I’ll just do what she wants’. This is my opinion and experience. 🤷‍♀

As far as _"Why wait until it hurts so bad? Make contact again!"_ I 10,000% understand why she didn't. It's hard enough to reach out the first time, especially being a newbie to the situation, but after being told _"It's normal."_ then you *really* feel like you shouldn't reach out. Someone has made that person feel like it's *her* fault. It's *her* feeling the pain as someone new to braiding, it's not the *hairdresser's* fault she doesn't know this, so it's like this mini-deception of "Oh, it must just be you. I did my job." I don't want to use the word "gaslighting," because that is deliberately messing with someone's mind to make them question their own reality, but I don't think the stylist _intended_ on making her feel this way. The stylist was negligent though. What she *should* have done was say _" I'm so sorry you're dealing with that. Sometimes it hurts pretty bad! Try a warm compress, maybe some ibuprofen, but if you're still in pain, feel free to contact me again and we'll see what's going on!"_
Yeah, it's a little bit of a pain to keep up with someone when you've already done your job, but that's *customer service.* Don't do braids if you can't handle the service industry.

It’s so annoying when some gals claim that they just have a strong scalp and others don’t
Just don’t braid too tight…. There’s no need to to go around scalping people, don’t be barbaric.

I had a client that said her hair weave I put in was too tight, She was uncomfortable for 3 days, I took it out and gave her money back. But before that I took it out and redid it, and now she didn’t like. So I took it down again. And still gave her money back and put her out the salon. Lol you should have seen her face when I gave her money back and put her out the salon 😮

As a client, you have control over what is done to your body. People act like you can't tell a stylist no or stop or ouch that hurts. But I believe her scalp issues are the main reason her style felt tight. I myself have scalp issues and I have to use prescribed shampoo and cream on my hair and scalp. Otherwise there may be inflammation of the scalp. But that lady paid for service and tipped her because she wanted that style so bad she was willing to sacrifice her scalp health. She texted her to say it was still tight but didn't ask for a different style. She could've soaked her scalp in oils and it still wouldn't have been enough to soothe her discomfort. She needed to have the sew in Uninstalled not shaved off. I hate the stylist has to pay the cost for clients decisions on how the client cares for their own hair and scalp. When all the stylist can do is refuse services or use of certain products with clients. Its just not fair.

When I was 14 I had my hair chemically straightened. I told the lady it was burning, she told me it was "normal" because I have a sensitive scalp. I left there with 2nd degree burns at my edges. I still have no hair in those spots. I cried all the way home. My mom acted like I was a brat until she saw the big blisters on my edges and into my hair line. I never went there again. I still hate that lady! I think she didn't know how to deal with big and thick Puerto Rican hair.

I had to save my sibling from someone who did this to him. He was having migraines. They had put …glue in his hair. glue !
Glue that you need to go to them to take it off…but it was an emergency.
In the end my mother (saviour ) was able to undo the awful wheel braids.
Thank god I was like something is wrong these things to come of now.
If the braids are too tight - my god take it off. Do not wait. It should never hurt. No matter if you are someone with strong hair. Do not risk it.

that's true... but when it comes to physical discomfort and pain, the client is absolutely right to say "I'm in pain, something isn't right." and if the professional has any sense of ethics, then the correct response to learning your client is in pain due to a service you provided is to say "I'm so sorry you're in pain. Let me look at my schedule and see where I can fit you in as soon as possible so I can figure out what's causing the pain and fix it for you, free of charge."

If I was the hairdresser and noticed the clients scalp was already in a bad shape, I would honestly suggest that she should get it looked at first by a health professional before doing any sort of hair job that involves pulling hair like braiding, the hairdresser can be held liable in this case.

I’m always afraid of something like this, when my nieces go on vacation and get the braids from the tourist type shops. They LOVE it. They get little henna tattoos and braids. They giggle and say it feels tight and haven’t had any actual issues, they say it feels fine after a little bit (not even a full day) but in the back of my mind I’m always worried of something like this! Scary stuff
