For people who aren't aware, there was a tragic story about K2 at the weekend and thus the episode about the board game K2 where you have climbers that can die and the potential that there were jokes about player's characters dying would not have been timely. Whilst people die climbing all the time, the manner of this death is the reason for its newsworthiness The episode is still coming.
Oh. Forgot about that. I've played K2. It's one of the (very few) games that I really did not enjoy. It became a bit of a joyless snoozefest as all the climbers got bogged down near the top of the mountain.

As a fan of this game, a neat thing i noticed about how they set this game up. Every player's deck features one of the decks from the base copy of the game smashed up with a deck from some of the myriad expansions. Really awesome showcase of the games options
Yeah they have really gotten it down how to showcase the whole game, including expansions. That's also why I love this channel a lot, even tho I currently don't have the people to play these games with.
@@Schilani I'd recommend finding your local game store (or stores) and ask if they have game nights where people come in and play. If you do, please please *please* be a good guest and make it a pleasant experience for the store hosting it to encourage them to host more. For example, buy games, sleeves, mats, accessories, drinks, snacks, or whatever from them when you can especially if they're not charging anything to attend and play. I mean, it *is* a store after all and they have to pay the bills to keep the doors open, lights on, toilets flushing, etc. Know what I mean? I'm not saying that you have to go in there and buy a lot every time but, ya know, some things sometimes is a good idea. Speaking as someone who knows the owner of a local geek shop, it goes a long way. Now, doing the opposite and doing stuff that undercuts the store's profits? For example, trying to step in between a deal when the store is about to buy something from a customer so you can undercut them? Yeah, do *NOT DO THAT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES* !!! Yes, I heard about that very thing happening and it was almost the last straw. The owner was pretty upset. It very nearly almost ended up in that person being banned from the events or even the whole event being shut down. So... Yeah, share a bit of love, show appreciation, and have a great time!
Laurie is a great host so if after adams disciplinary leave he is let go or doesnt appear on here anymore than Laurie will absolutely kill it. No doubt.
He is being accused of predatory behavior by a former NRB member (Carley). This had been the cause for his first time being cancelled. Hopefully it's nothing and the whole thing will resolve itself. This channel wouldn't be the same without him.
I think only Blair was supposed to get the benefit of Gold Rush as it specifies when "you" play a minion, not when anyone or a player. Also in the rules: "When a card gets discarded, it goes to the discard pile of the player whose deck it came from, no matter who played or controlled it."

But Laurie, the thing I have to correct you on is this: "An ability that starts with "Talent:" is never resolved immediately. You'll be able to activate it on each of your turns (including the turn the minion is played), but only after you finish resolving everything involved with playing a minion and only if the minion is played during Phase 2 of your turn." i bought a lot of smash up sets during the pandemic all because of Laurie Blake recommending it on this channel. I had a lot of fun with this game and I'm whole lotta broke.

Smash Up is one of my favourite games. I'm really happy to see they included some of the expansion factions as they are both fun to play and hilarious to look at.
Hearing Laurie talk about loving deck building card games I immediately thought of one of my favorite games “Dominion”! Maybe some day we’ll see a play through of this lovely strategy game… especially with all the possible additions this game is endlessly layered, and I think the peeps would have great fun playing it!
It might have been mentioned before, but you absolutely can use Talents the same turn the minion or action bearing it is played. The rule is "once per turn during your Play Cards step." Unlike other cards with abilities that *have* to be used when the card is played, Talents give you a choice whether and when to activate them.
Imagine a lord of the board style tournament BUT it's this game, each player picks their smash faction and we see which comes out on top? 16 players go in, 5 total games, but there can only be 1 winner....
Laurie probably has his own personal method, but aside from the base mats that come with some new expansions, I used a series of d20s to keep track of the base power.
Smash Up is one of my favorite games too. I just love how the art and card names are silly and make you laugh out loud, then you start to play and realize its really tactical. Yeah I admit there is a lot of luck to the game, but there is real skill too, especially for something so wonky.

Hmm that intresting, i've played the game before so i can't gauge how well the video explain how the game is played for a new player. Although its fairly simple for the most part aside from so deck specific interactions. Pick 2 decks and shuffle them to make your team. You can think up cool on theme name if you want (optional but fun) The objective is get 15 points. You get point from the bases by having the higher minion power there. Bases break if total minion power exceeds base strength. Each turn you may play 1 action card and one minion card. You draw 2 cards each turn. Max hand size is 10. Thats the basics of how the game works Last thing would be as they said talents can't be used by minions on the turn they enter play. Some of the faction have special abilites but thats not super neccessary for understanding the basics of the game.
I like how Blair’s intro to her cowboy dinosaur faction just sounds like her pitching a TMNT-esque cartoon show from the late 80’s lol, like the Cowboys of Moo-Mesa but they’re T-Rexes and raptors lol

@@LipziG3R Carley has made comments on her latest youtube videos in response to people asking about her being on NRB again that Adam has been acting predatory again in the same way he was in the past so she has no intention to at this time. In the past, he manipulated and pressured women into sending him pictures of themselves, so not as bad as some, but still not acceptable behaviour. He later apologised and took a year off to get therapy and so, people seem to have trusted he made a genuine effort to change, became better, and that was in the past. But Carley's accusations make it likely, he either never changed or he relapsed when he started to get TH-cam fame again.
Really hate to be saying this since I love the channel but you really need to do something about addressing the current situation with Adam publicly, there’s plenty of people completely unaware of what’s happened who are looking forward to him coming back (as I was until I looked deeper into his absence) and it isn’t right to not make it absolutely clear to the fans.
As much as I agree, we need to keep in mind that NRB is a company and there are probably some legal reasons this is taking a while for them to speak about...

They knew about it for a good month or so and were dealing with it trying to get their ducks in a row and ultimately didn’t want to make any public comments until they were thoroughly ready. Unfortunately people figured it out and they had to come forward about it early than they wanted to. I’m really hoping this is something similar.

I like figuring out what the combinations would be named. Zombies + Wizards? Necromancer deck Dinos + Robots? Dinobots Dinos + Aliens? Dinosaucers, or Dinoriders... pick your preferred 80s/90s space dinosaur cartoon preference ^_^
As someone who just had a very "integral" coworker get accused of shit (and then that went to a police matter and now we can't talk about it other than a very vague public statement) it's very hard to work through. I hope all of you are doing ok with new information coloring the view of a friend. It can be very hard to reconcile new information with who you knew. It's also very easy to fall into the trap that someone is "too integral" to be either investigated or for the channel to continue. Thank you for not falling not those traps. You all are clearly handling this with pragmatism and it shows. I appreciate you all, and hope you are getting all the support you need.

I got the impression that it was toward someone else who then told her about it, but I could be wrong. Could be any of the female NRB crew, or maybe not even them but NRB fans, like last time. As someone who hasn't played this game, would Holly still have control over the Zapbot since she discarded it, but she only has control over it until the end of the turn according to her cat card? Shouldn't it have gone to Luke's pile since technically it would go back into his control?
This is correct, but Smash Up is full of things that break rules, and this kind of thing happens all the time until someone has an A-HA moment and realizes how it's supposed to work. Then you just hope everyone remembers for the next time those factions end up being used. Which can be a while considering how many there are.
I feel like the even bigger issue is that since it was destroyed in the Tar Pit, it should have gone to the bottom of one of their decks instead of a discard pile.

Is the talent rule a house rule or a mistake?I don’t see anywhere in the rules that restricts someone from playing until the next turn, just that it has to be played in the play cards phase once per turn.

The deck building is not truly a part of gameplay, it seems to be completed before gameplay begins. This game seems more like a resource allocation or worker placement game.

Ever since I saw Laurie's smash up Board Game Masterpiece video, I've been waiting to see this video on NRB. I'm glad to see it's not just me that loves smash up. And I don't want to be that guy, but the rules do say that a talent can be activated on the same turn the card is played. Granted, it wouldn't have changed much and Laurie would still have won. And who cares I suppose, everyone was having a great time

Have they got new cameras? The colours seem different and the picture sharper than usual. It could also be the speed this had to be edited due to having to bring this video forward (which is totally understandable).
i suspect it would have discarded into its original owners pile as thats usually the way it goes in card games BUT as this is a full set of cards you dont gotta worry too much about cards getting mixed up and forgotten so go wild!
Since you guys like this game so much may I recommend shuffle Grandprix, similar concept with picking two characters and shuffling the hands together but in a racing format.
What’s this about talents not being able to be used the same turn? The rules say they don’t activate immediately but they can be activated the same turn after you resolved playing a minion.
Oopsie-poopsies: 19:14 Even though Holly controls the Zapbot it should go back to Luke (the owner) when it is destoyed. 40:17 Microbot Fixer gives each Microbot +1 power, so it actually has 2 power. This means that as the base scores, Luke and Holly are tied at 11 points. This doesn't stop Blair from playing Dynamite Surprise, but the only thing she can do to tie for second place is to destroy Holly's Whiskers. 47:13 A talent can be used as soon as the card comes into play, and then once during each of that player's turns until the card is destroyed or someone else gains control of it.
As someone who has extremely curly moustache hairs, I dont need any wax, but without it and scissors, I may have some hairs that dart out to the sides.
I completely understand Laurie's energy here. For me, the game is The Captain is Dead. I got to play it at the board game group I joined recently and was so happy.
I love this game but now I am worried that either we or you are playing something wrong. :( When you play an action on a base and is says something like 'when YOU play a minion, draw a card', that is just for the owner of that action, no? It doesn't mean everyone who plays a minion there draws a card...

Right off the bat, Laurie's "Manly Horse" thing made me think of Ryan Gosling's Kens whole horse… thing in the Barbie Movie.
When I first started watching NRB it was Laurie that I gravitated to the most, I had to warm up to the others. I just wanted to share that.
Tom was the one I gravitated to, there's just something about his deadpan, no holds barred delivery that I loved!

@@naminethewitchThat’s my hope. To anyone who followed the Try Guys TH-cam channel it’s similar to a controversy they had last year. They knew about it for a good month or so and were dealing with it trying to get their ducks in a row and ultimately didn’t want to make any public comments until they were thoroughly ready. Unfortunately people figured it out and they had to come forward about it early than they wanted to. I’m really hoping this is something similar.
@@naminethewitchyou’re right and there’s no need to turn it into a circus and I respect them not throwing him under the bus and obviously wanting to respect his privacy. On the other hand they’re a company who make their money through the fans directly funding things like the patreon, the kickstarters and their live events, I think for that reason there needs to be some level of transparency, even just a statement saying why he’s not here and that updates will follow would be better than having to find out about it second hand from outside sources

I’ve been waiting for you to play this game! It’s one of my favorites. Interesting that y’all specifically choose which decks you took. I’m used to it playing where the decks you get are random to avoid people who are more experienced from making broken combos.

As someone who just had a very "integral" coworker get accused of shit (and then that went to a police matter and now we can't talk about it other than a very vague public statement) it's very hard to work through. I hope all of you are doing ok with new information coloring the view of a friend. It can be very hard to reconcile new information with who you knew.
It's also very easy to fall into the trap that someone is "too integral" to be either investigated or for the channel to continue. Thank you for not falling not those traps. You all are clearly handling this with pragmatism and it shows. I appreciate you all, and hope you are getting all the support you need.

I got the impression that it was toward someone else who then told her about it, but I could be wrong. Could be any of the female NRB crew, or maybe not even them but NRB fans, like last time. As someone who hasn't played this game, would Holly still have control over the Zapbot since she discarded it, but she only has control over it until the end of the turn according to her cat card? Shouldn't it have gone to Luke's pile since technically it would go back into his control?
This is correct, but Smash Up is full of things that break rules, and this kind of thing happens all the time until someone has an A-HA moment and realizes how it's supposed to work. Then you just hope everyone remembers for the next time those factions end up being used. Which can be a while considering how many there are.
I feel like the even bigger issue is that since it was destroyed in the Tar Pit, it should have gone to the bottom of one of their decks instead of a discard pile.
It just occurred to me that if Laurie's in charge now - any chance of more Warhammer? I remember Laurie doing a GW promo piece back in the day and I would give anything to watch you guys play some Rogue Trader or WFRP.
It's funny hearing about the Evans City Cemetery, because it's an actual cemetery about forty five minutes away from where I live. All of the George Romero zombie movies are filmed within about an hour of me, in several directions.

Is the talent rule a house rule or a mistake?I don’t see anywhere in the rules that restricts someone from playing until the next turn, just that it has to be played in the play cards phase once per turn.

This game seems more like a resource allocation or worker placement game.

Ever since I saw Laurie's smash up Board Game Masterpiece video, I've been waiting to see this video on NRB. I'm glad to see it's not just me that loves smash up. And I don't want to be that guy, but the rules do say that a talent can be activated on the same turn the card is played. Granted, it wouldn't have changed much and Laurie would still have won. And who cares I suppose, everyone was having a great time

i suspect it would have discarded into its original owners pile as thats usually the way it goes in card games BUT as this is a full set of cards you dont gotta worry too much about cards getting mixed up and forgotten so go wild!
Since you guys like this game so much may I recommend shuffle Grandprix, similar concept with picking two characters and shuffling the hands together but in a racing format.
What’s this about talents not being able to be used the same turn? The rules say they don’t activate immediately but they can be activated the same turn after you resolved playing a minion.

This means that as the base scores, Luke and Holly are tied at 11 points.
This doesn't stop Blair from playing Dynamite Surprise, but the only thing she can do to tie for second place is to destroy Holly's Whiskers.

When you play an action on a base and is says something like 'when YOU play a minion, draw a card', that is just for the owner of that action, no? It doesn't mean everyone who plays a minion there draws a card...
You're correct. As much as I liked watching this it had a LOT of errors.
