I'm just presuming here but I'm super glad he's going hatless as that seems to be something that especially young bald people often struggle with. So I love that for Laurie, and he looks so good and confident!
Fun game mode I play with this game. (Only play with a group who have all played the standard mode) Team up into pairs, each pair with a ship (so can go up to 8 players instead of 4) The parts are either on the other side of the room or a different room. Then in the team you have a runner and a builder, the runner has to run to the pile, go through them, pick one and bring it back. The builder then has to use whatever parts they are given to build the ship, they can hand the piece back if no good. You end up with complete chaos with lots of shouting, great with children being the runners. You can't switch roles once starting to build for that flight but can switch at the start of other flights before building begins. The rest of the game is played as standard. Enjoy and good luck!
At 1:19:00 I love the 4 different levels demonstrated of playing with only 1 hand. Jon has his arm fully behind his back. Laurie has his arm down off the table. Blaire has her arm just relaxing on the table. Sully says screw the rules.
Blair seems most familiar with the rules - would have been nice to see you give her a chance at leading/presenting this one. I think she'd do a good job. Perhaps an other time?
At one point she hinted that she was the owner of the game. They had just finished building ships. "You would think the owner of the game could build better" Or something to that effect.
I love by the last round of shipbuilding they really have just given up on the rules; you're supposed to only flip a tile over your own board, not in the middle over the pile!
@@Hugh.Manatee Cadet Riley Shepard (acting lieutenant) was the helmsman on the USS Valiant in DS9. Took part in acts of sabotage/terrorism against the Federation as a member of Red Squad. Got blown up on the Valiant along with everyone else not dressed in plot armour. There's also the Shepard-class starship, with at least one blowing up (somewhere in the 1st season of Discovery).
1:42:17 Laurie didn't have to dump the blue cargo in his toxic cargo hold to accommodate the red he picked up. He could have moved that blue to another empty cargo hold space.
A note on the "Cruise Captain" title (cabins with a view of space): only cabins with a smooth side that point into a space where no component is mounted count toward the title. The central starting cabin, because it has no smooth side as all four sides have connectors, does not count toward this title. So for the end of the level 1 adventure, only Jon would get the credits instead of tying with Blair and Sully. For level 2, Sully correctly counted two, but Blair only had one and would not have tied.
For Blair: you don't HAVE to play with the sand timer, it's optional! I never play with it as I just find it way to stressful! I also love the shipbuilding phase :-) There's a Print N' Play solo mode that's a lot of fun and it allows you to build at your own pace. I'll also recommend the digital app implementation too as it's one of the few that really transcend the physical game. It's very fun, a bit silly and has the same sense of humour as found in the rulebook :-D
@leoff7 Exactly! Burgle Bros is probably the other excellent example of an app that transcends the physical game, plus it really reduces the book-keeping required and has wonderfully thematic music :-)
I think I'd struggle a lot if I used the timer (ASD can be fun like that), and I can guarantee that I'd make so many mistakes 😂 Usually, pressure doesn't bother me, but my brain kind of fizzled out when Laurie explained the building phase (which doesn't bode well for me if I were to play this)
" we're filming this at Christmas. It's coming out in January" he says in February. I didn't realize you lot also used the United States postal service.
The epidemic card is so brutal. When I teach this on flight #2 (I don't think it exists in #1) I specifically call out the card and how you have to not separate crew as a warning.
I haven't played with the hourglass yet but it'd be quite fun. I also use the Rough Roads expansion (I have the old Anniversary Edition) to even out the game giving handicaps to experienced players. Those goal cards seem like a cool addition to the game. I'd love to have that in my version (as well as the catapults that fling resources that I believe is in that edition). Galaxy Trucker is easily in my top 3 games of all time. I love it so much. Also love that the win condition is just to have money at the end of the game. Really adds to the light-hearted fun of the game. Vlaada's brilliant.
This channel needs more wholesome Laurie thirst, and if I need to be the catalyst by saying how much those glasses suit him, then you better believe I will.
Wonderful! I read the rules to this game: Everyone wins! Jon just happened to make the most amount of money, but everyone came out with a profit, so you all win! Congrats!

It was already like this in the 1st edition.
Interesting, I kinda liked the leapfrog application. The player who does not land still is the the one being affected by this change, and leapfrogging helps them more. But now that I think about it more, I suppose this really could affect the person in last place more than is fair? Not sure
I haven't played Galaxy Truckers, I've read a few reviews and it's just never appealed to me (mostly because of the real time element). However, after watching you guys play it, I'm very tempted to get a copy.
I never play it with the sand timer as I can't cope with the stress levels it causes! The rules do actually state that it's optional (IIRC) and you can just play based on whoever finishes their ship first.
This seems like a really fun game! I miss my old board gaming crew... they all moved away, and my remaining friends only do D&D. Which, don't get me wrong, I love our current Spelljammer campaign, but sometimes I'd like some variety with a board game or a card game, y'know? Sometimes I just want to build janky space trucks and race across a pirate-filled galaxy, instead of being a paladin flying on a space pirate ship across the... galaxy.... hm.
Been a while since I played this, but I believe that gun covers adjacent rows/columns as well as their own against large meteors. The small one I believe can't be shot. It could be different prints of the game though.
Sideways pointed lasers cover adjacent rows for sideways big meteor shooting, small meteors cannot be shot as they are far too small and you're flying a ship made of sewer pipes the tracking system is just not good for small objects. Forward and backwards pointed lasers only do the column they're in
Bit of a heads up for Laurie, the thing he's thinking of is the Red Bull Flugtag. The air races are actually reasonable light airplane races. Still great reference tho
I quite like Galaxy Trucker. It's quite manic and fun. Though I have noticed that the game seems to be best played (in my experience) by picking 1-2 things to focus your ship on for each round rather than trying to have a well-rounded ship. This is due to the way the game works, with a hard fail/pass threshold for various events (pirates, space stations, etc). There is no difference between having 0 weapon points and 5 if the number you need is 6, for example. Which is fine for the game to encourage, of course, nothing wrong with a game rewarding specialization over generalization. But I think it's rather unintuitive and the game doesn't really push you in that direction. You might start round 1 and think that having 3 lasers is a perfectly respectable amount of weaponry and if you do that you'll be screwed. I wish the game included a bit more guidance towards how to best design a ship in this regard.
At 1:21:35 you can see that Sully has an engine at 4-7 that burns straight into an habitat. Then at 1:23:33 you can see that he switched the engine at 4-7 for the cargospace that was at 6-7. Cheating much???
As an owner of this game and haveing played it about 100 times you do learn how to quickly build a ship that won't fully break up even with max players. The best hints I can give you are: ever Never use a pipe junction. They do have good connectors but you are wasting a funtional space on your ship. go for shields over anything else to get full coverage and have them in the centre of the ship., Once you have shields in place batteies are the next most important to power the shileds. Only take powered engines or weapons if you have to beacause other players got to them first. They are not normally worth it., Always get both aliens if you can. An alien get you plus 2 for engine or weapon and are esier to get than actually finging two extra engines and weapons that fit and never ever put two habitation tiles adjacent to each other. If you are playing in a 4 player game you might have to do it but if you do make sure that at least your aliens are not adjacent to another habitat as is an epidemic card comes out and you have an alien adjacent to any other occupied habitat that alien is gone and youve lost 2 engine or weapon power.
My group of friends love this game but because we have gotten so good at it we now add double the nuber of cards to the trip to at least occatioanlly have one of us fall to bits.
Oh. Should also add if your playing with three or four players don't worry about open connectors as much. It's more worthwhile to have a peice with an open conecctor than have no peice. You should always fill your board.
How did Sully's ship change between him being "done" and claiming 1st ( 1:21:39 )and the inspection phase in the 3rd round ( 1:23:37 ) ?? Engine at 4,7 pointing straight at a habitation pod. Switched with cargo to 6,7 during inspection!!!! I call shenanigans. This seemed hella fun though!!!
37:30 Blair going for the very bold "None cargo with left gun" approach
I'm trying to remember where that's from... SU&SD?
Damn... A none pizza with left beef referece in 2024?
Fortunately, spaceships don't need to be aerodynamic.
Absolutely true. But inertia still matters.
They do need balanced thrust, though. Sally's ship with engines on one side would just fly in circles lol
@@joemelton2044 You would assume a space ship of this kind would have engines with directional thrust like a raptor engine. Use your imagination.

Jon timing himself out like a chastised child was incredibly sweet. Clearly the others wouldn't think he was cheating!

It's rare to see Laurie lose his cool like in that third flight, what a delight that was lmao
