This video felt so personal at various levels. It is kind of strange that we are expected to have all of our life figured out when we pass our school. I believe that the key to fulfillment never lies in always choosing the right path but rather making mistakes, sometimes choosing the wrong path and then eventually finding your way back to what gives purpose to your life. I genuinely appreciate the hardwork that you did to get into medical school and the courage that you demonstrated to pursue the direction of your dreams. The world might consider us as lunatics, but here we are, a community of lunatics who experiment and learn from our lives by following the unconventional path.
    Wishing you all the best.

Learning Spanish was one of the best decsions I ever made. It was quite by chance but it has led me on a great adventure over the last 40 years including a stint at the British Library, time in Peru doing archival research and a wonderful 9 months living in Argentia. I now live in Spain where I think I will spend the rest of my life.

Wow that is super cool, you’re living the dream! Yeah it opened up my curiosity to the world and now I see doors that I didn’t before!

I love this! The same thing happened to me. I was going to spend a year studying Arabic in Jordan and then go to law school…and I never went. Life has been much, much better as a result.

Love to hear it! I'm apparently not the only one who's stable career was disrupted by the evils of learning a language.

Really glad i stumbled upon your video. I'm in a different situation than you are. I started having doubts in my second year, but i ignored them and 4 years later i will be graduating medical school in a few months. I haven't quite figured out what i'm going to do next (was interesting in forensics, but that path will be really difficult).
As for the time being i started learning french and it got me really inspired.
Best of luck, Marcus. Looking forward to seeing new videos from you.

Thank you so much for the message!
I think you'll figure it out. As you probably already know, you'll just have to be a bit more creative than usual. Which is not the worst situation to be in. It's another way of saying that you still have the opportunity to carve a unique path for yourself.
If it helps you in the slightest or at least gives you ideas, after I officially checked out, I started working in biotech then later in clinical research.
Ps. I am coincidentally also learning French at the moment.

Thank you for the reply! I was also considering clinical research or medical specialist with a foreign language. I think it's a good way of keeping yourself in the field whilst trying to figure out what to do exactly.
It will work out eventually. Im trying to think positive (emphasis on trying :D).
      Good luck with learning french!

I respect this so much. I'm glad that I came to the same conclusion that medicine wasn't for me while still being in undergrad since the grind brought me no happiness. I'm sure that was a decision that weighed heavily on you and your family for some time since it did for me. I was just 3 classes away from finishing the prereqs. Did the physics, bio, math+stats, gen chem + analytical chem. Not the same situation as you, and yet I still feel a bit conflicted over it.
Looking forward to learning more about your journey, brother.

You know, before I broke the news to everyone, I was expecting nothing but outrage from them haha. Instead, I'm so lucky that they understood completely and thought, "wow, if you waited until such a critical point to back out, it really must have been wrong for you." And that was exactly right.
And I feel you about still being conflicted over it. As you know, this was 3 years ago, but for some reason I still felt the need to make a video about it haha! Because I still have moments (brief moments lol) where I think to myself, "wait, should I have gone?"

Awesome content! Love your editing style. I'm 22 and I feel like I'm in a similar situation but I just don't know if maybe I'm just doubting myself or it's a real sign, y'know? Any advice?

Welcome! Unfortunately, you aren't going to like my advice. There's only one question that really matters before you ask yourself anymore questions, and that is "Do I want to be a doctor". And of course, only you can answer that for yourself. Listen to yourself and how you feel about various situations that you find yourself in. I hope that you will find an answer if you focus on your own feelings and motivations and try tune out outside influences.
Jeez, I hope that's even remotely helpful!

@@MethodMarcus Hi. Thank you for the answer. Looks like my next step is deep thinking about my life and where I want to be. Another thing is that I try to adapt the "I'm not starting from scratch, I'm starting with experience" mindset so that in the case that I do change careers in my early 30s, I don't think I wasted my time. Anyways thank you again and I hope your channel blows!

I finished veterinary school in my old country which let me make a living in the US, but I never was a 100% in it. I was always engineering, technical type and loved learning new languages. So now at the retirement age I'm learning French. I would still if I could change other things in my life but well...

Regardless, this is inspiring, you're starting something that you've chosen for yourself now and that's admirable. If you're interested, I recommend Steve Kaufmann-lingosteve on youtube, he's has some interesting insight on language learning.
I'm also learning French at the moment by the way!

interesting. i wish life came with instructions and signs that let you know when you're going down the wrong path. how do you ever know what you're doing is the right thing? i'm in medical school. i can't say with certainty "i want to be a doctor." but all i know is that i can say with certainty "i want stability. i crave security." i am hopeful that can be found in being in the undying healthcare field.
i'm not sure i'll be happy. i'm terrified of being 50 and finding out i could've been 10 times more satisfied, fulfilled, or happy writing or being an interior designer. imagine that. that fear is a huge weight on me. my life--my life... Dear God what is supposed to be done with it exactly?
these feelings... are they natural doubts born out of fear of the unknown or a serious gut instinct worth looking into? how do i ever know?
this is an interesting video. can i ask: are you fulfilled? do you feel on most days a sense that your life is meaningful? do you feel lost? is it a bad feeling?

Absolutely love this. I wish I had your courage and self-reflection skills at your age..I do now though or at least I'm getting there. I'm so happy you were able to do what you were able to do. Family culture and environment is a massive influence growing up and can be really detrimental if you can't find your own voice, courage and have the confidence to listen to yourself. Thanks for making this video. Here's to many more! 😊💪

So you quit med school to learn languages?
I've been thinking of applying to med school but I'm not sure if it's for me, I know I don't like Cs and I feel like med school would make me at least upper middle class, and I would feel useful by treating people's illnesses but it's a very tough career

    • @MethodMarcus
      @MethodMarcus  ปีที่แล้ว +2

I quit med school to work a "normal job" that gave me the time and energy to dive into my hobbies, the main one here of course happens to be learning languages lol.
You have to ask and answer for yourself if it's right for you and if you WANT to do it! You're right, it's a hard question to answer, best of luck!
