Have an old Ross Evoulution and still love it. Big fan of Ross Reels. Thanks for the content. 👍
Thanks for being here!
Great product review! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching.
This is good news. I have a couple of CLAs that I love. Tough, well designed and get the job done.
Thanks for watching.
I only own ross reels, man i love my 12, 10, and 8 evo r salts, my 7/8 animas’s, and my 7/8 gunnison. Ive caught some serious fish on them evo r salts, those things have endless amounts of drag!
Thanks for being here!
Thanks for the info Brian. Hoping that Ross will bring back the Gunnison and Canyon Big Game. Really like my Ross reels.
We're big fans. Thanks for being here!
I’ve only been fly fishing for a few years so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. However, one complaint with this reel is that while cleaning or inspecting it is very easy for the clicker to fall out and get lost since the two pieces that make it up are only held on to a square peg by tension. Seems like a simple clip could’ve solved this.
Still it is a great looking reel. Im hoping to try it out on some of Brookville’s big browns once the flows moderate!

Im on the fence with this one. I know a little about machining and by seeing all of the pics on the internet, they could have kept the spool on the lathe a few more seconds and resolve all of the issues people will have with this reel. Theres plenty of meat on those spokes that if a few millimeters were shaved off would shed weight and increase backing capacity. But.. for 295 it is nice.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks a million to Brian for getting me into fly fishing
Thanks a ton for being here.
I love my Ross reels and even though they're all about 20 years old they show no signs of quitting
Ross makes a quality product…..since 1973!
Hi - With the drag set to lowest setting does the reel free spool, or is there enough resistance to stop free spooling?
You'd have to call or e-mail the folks at the shop with that question. They will be happy to help. So sorry but we don't have that intel here. They will though of course. Thanks!!
How would you compare these with the Echo?
Good question! Shoot Brian an email directly at the shop and he can help you there, admin@madriveroutfitters.com
Love the micarta material. The most popular precision rifle stock is made out of this material along with a lot of knife manufacturers use it for the handles or scales. Thanks!!
We love it too. Seems like they're going that direction with the cerakote too.
I have got tre Ross Gunnison reels # G3-4 5 the have serve me well for more than 25 yers + On Danish saltwater and trips to Alaska..
Thanks for watching. This new version should serve for years as well.
My biggest issue with this new Cimarron is the weight.A 4/5 is 5.8 oz and the 5/6 is 6.2 oz.Thats bordering on a saltwater fly reels weight. The optimal weight for a reel for a 5wt is somewhere between 3.75 - 4.8 oz.You mentioned it’s anodized but I can’t find where that is stated on the Ross website.I have Ross cimarrons from the 90s and they are light and functional and will last me a lifetime.I have to say the reel is ugly also.
Thanks for watching! For the weight, Brian actually found it to be slightly on the heavy side too, but within an acceptable range for effective casting. In terms of the reel being anodized, here's the direct quote from Ross themselves:
"The Cimarron opens up the gateway into the Ross Reel family. At a $295 price point, this reel provides a high quality drag system based on our renowned Animas reel, anodized frame and spool, premium textured cerakote drag knob for easy adjustments and durability against any drops and dinks."
Definitely cool to hear you still have an old one that has held up. Ross makes awesome reels.
But I like heavy fly reels
I agree, Dan. Don't know why people make such a big deal out of reel weight. I wouldn't put a 9/10 reel on a 3 wt. of course, but I will get a reel I like with the appropriate line rating and just go with it. Couldn't tell you the weights of any of the 21 reels I currently own.
@@Cigarhiker Brian prefers a heavier reel as well, as he states here. Thanks for watching.
I am a big fan of Ross Reels and own them for about every fly rod I have. Nice to see this reel on the market but they definitely blew it on the design. I am not sure who designed those cut outs, seems like a big miss. Love my Colorados and Animas reels though!
We're huge fans of the Animas and pretty much anything Ross puts out. The hand-feel and performance of this reel is pretty great, especially for budget-minded folks. Thanks for being here with us!
