There are indeed a good few 90's Metallica songs that are really good.........sadly, there are quite a few meandering album fillers too. Half of Load and half of Reload would have been such a better option

I still get chills when I listen to this song. I wore out the the S&M double disc album when I bought it. The other standout from this performance was Outlaw Torn, the orchestra adds so much depth and meaning. Plus it seems James gives the lyrics some extra emotion when singing. Just No Leaf Clover, Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me would make this one of the greatest rock and roll performances of all time. I don't understand why people don't recognize this more...

Best Metallica moment in my life was Summer Sanitarium '00. Full arena rock. Played Fade To Sanitarium to Black. Actually played Sanitarium as the bridge for Fade To Black. That concert was when I won the meet and greet where I met Metallica, and the bands on the side stage where they had it knew my brother and gave me tix to their next gig. Security wasn't paying attention, and I started just pushing a box of gear following the crew into the stadium and ended up magically backstage/sidestage with Kid Rock. Got kicked out. And getting back to my seat my friend vowed he would never trade tickets with me ever again!!
Roadie Dave: Day 1 and the next 24 years is all because of Metallica!!

It's a tragedy that we lost Michael Kamen so early. Not only did he bring his magic touch to Metallica's song, but let's not forget that he was integral to orchestrating Queen's "Who wants to live forever" and making the performances stand out in the memorable Pavarotti & Friends concerts.
PS. I think the pentatonic string arrangement he does in the final chorus could be a nod to some of the well-known Western cinema soundtracks (I think mainly by Elmer Bernstein).

I've also always thought that this song has one of Metallica's coolest clean riffs (plus that breakdown goes hard as well), not to mention James' singing is on point as well. Plus this song is just one reason why S&M is one of the best live albums with so many of the other songs being absolute staples like Puppets, Call of Kthulu, One and Nothing Else Matters imo, great video as always brother

I don't think there has ever been any other version that pulled me in as deep into the emotions and story of that song like the S&M 1 live version does. That intro part from the orchestra before James starts playing is probably burned into my brain at this point.

I love this song, it's very beautiful and still powerful. I get why you so dearly love it. However, my pick for Metallica's single greatest composition would be The Call Of Ktulu on S&M. It was made for a classical orchestra, the OG on Ride The Lightning in itself is great and super groundbreaking imo. A 9 minute classical-driven progressive metal instrumental to close off their sophomore album. Who does that?! Fricking, Rush took siz albums to do that with La Villa Strangiato. But the orchestra just elevates it to another dimension. The highs, the lows, the surges, the breakdowns, the clean and the heavy riffs, the marvelous harmonies all coming together in perfect sync and arrangement for one epic composition. It's thunderous, it's gorgeous, it's incredible.

One leaf clover has been my favourite by them since I'd 1st heard it, and was actually my intro to Symphonic metal as a sub-genre. 😅
And for me the intro & Bridge perfectly capture the imagery of a freight train thundering down the tracks (intro its not as in your face so to create the image of it far away and nothing to be worried about; Bridge- the train is on you and about to run you flat). Such a beautiful use of the sound to create that image to me. 🤘

S&m is still my favorite Metallica album because it fits so damn well with the Orchestra arrangement. People shit on it that it doesn't add up. I disagree, it just that Kamen wrote a lot of counterwaves and didn't want to play the exact same piece of music.
The call of cthulu version is even a notch better than no leaf clover. It's like a wild roller-coaster ride of emotions up down and sideways. Without the orchestra I can't stand the track at all. But with all the dynamics added it almost sounds like a movie soundtrack.
Cliff Burton was so visionary when they wrote those songs.
Also James Voice sounded the best ever. I don't know if they put on a lot of autotune but man, it still had that gritty lion tone and since the load and reload days he really learned how to sing so much better.

It's a bit of a tragedy that they decided to auto-tune James' voice on this album (same goes for Death Magnetic, but for different reasons).
I get that they only used it sparingly to correct some vocal pitch mistakes here and there, it's a live album after all and it would be weird to re-record those lines in studio...
But I still feel like the mistakes would sound way less jarring as opposed to the sudden robotic vocal segments that resulted from 90s pitch correction software.

I don't particularly subscribe to the title 'no leaf clover' being the opposite reference to a 4 leaf clover (good luck) ... but maybe just 'no luck' ... not good, not bad, just when it comes to luck (then it comes to be ♫♪♪♪) ... there's just none at all.
Although considering that 'the soothing light at the end of your tunne' could be a freight train - that's unlucky for anyone!

21:28 I can't let you do that. There are multiple songs I still unironically like on "Hardwired". 72 seasons has some brief moments, but I haven't listened to it since it came out.

Aside from the first 4 (and bits of the Black Album), I've always felt Bleeding Me is one of their best, especially the S&M performance.

@@BecomeTheKnight Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer are a terrific trinity of tracks that sound awesome back to back to back. Yeah, they sound a bit too familiar in places, which is my initial critique about the mid90s songs in general. But, when Load/Reload works, man, it is right on the Money. The S&M Outlaw Torn is one of the best things they ever did. It is utterly magnificent.

James's singing in s&m is annoying for bleeding me. Only vocal performance i despise on that album

They played Memory Remains when I saw them in 2019, and it was damm near the best song they played, specifically for that post chorus part 😂

I wish I could quantify HOW they are able to do a fraction of the arrangement and still capture that song SO well live. It still feels awesome and that upper register guitar part I gushed over isn't played live. The crowd certainly helps hahaha, but still....I meed to know why it still works lmao
