I'm an Orthodox Christian so I'm afraid I'm doing great going to church on Sunday music-wise hehe, but yeah, for my dear prots and Novus Ordo brothers in Christ, it's a bit frustrating isn't it?
Dang, I used to wear those Hot Topic pants. I bet they'll make a comeback in a few years! As a Contemporary Christian Worship Leader, I agree with the soullessness of a large majority of worship music. Similar to how I feel about most pop-country(copy paste lyrics, rhythms, progressions). There's the occasional banger, but it's become a business with not a lot of authentic poetry about the human condition. I guess the alternate argument is, worship music is written to be repeatable, sing-able, easy to follow. It's like teaching a congregation how to pray but through music, equipping them with tools. 4 chords and the Truth, but.... the occasional shred your face off solo wouldn't hurt. If God created music, he also created Steve Vai. Probably has Tender Surrender on repeat. haha
@@F.-VonEverHeck I think I heard this on Prager U where Dennis Prager has a playlist about the ten commandments. Not saying Become the Knight got it from there, but I heard it there.
I once threw my pick into the crowd at the end of gig and the crowd cleared out, and I watched in slow motion as my lonely pick hit the floor because NO ONE wanted it!!! LOL I just laughed. Someone handed it back to me later as I was loading out my gear.
My issue with Christian music, being a Christian, is the fact that they rely on always having a Christian audience, which gives them an excuse to never have quality. However, I have seen some insane Christian musicians, including a woman whose voice absolutely blew me away.
I'm a die-hard Christian, and I will say contemporary Christian rock is one of the most boring styles of music known to man. It's like Coldplay had a kid with Arctic Monkeys and sang about salvation. Dark choir music on the other hand like Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of Saint Peter), amazing piece.
My issue with it is that many of those bands that are relying on a Christian audience are blatantly ripping off secular music. Especially when it comes to Christian metal. I'm not talking about Stryper or Zao. I'm mostly talking about the Christian bands that do not market themselves outside of Christian music. I used to work with some born again Christians, and they brought in a bunch of the metal bands they like, and these bands were literally lifting riffs from Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Pantera. It's like they know their audience will never hear those bands, mostly because it is for the angsty teens who aren't allowed to listen to those bands. I thought the handbook had something against stealing, lol.
I wish dream theater just picked a better dude to sing it’s kinda frustrating how huge the chunk of their discography is that I would absolutely obsess over if it wasn’t for his voice

1:40 I believe the words you're looking for are "Happy Together" by the Turtles. 3:41 Nah, my shitty school band wanted to play stuff by Kiss and GNR, and then wondered why it didn't sound the same. Maybe it's because Ace and Slash could play, and I mean really play.
When I was a kid the songs used to be lyric swaps from famous artists from the 70s and 80s and maybe because of that I liked the songs, but nowadays, whenever my friends bring something new that we could play they kinda sound all the same and as you said they kinda feel soulless. Maybe I just feel nostalgic about the old songs and that's why I still enjoy them or maybe something fundamental about the process of making the songs has changed.
Growing up in churches, having mixed for churches, and having played bass and guitar in churches quite a lot, I agree with what you said about CCM wholeheartedly. When I was in high school I mixed and controlled lyric slides for a church's youth group band that had more passion and energy between the 3 to 5 of them than every "proper" church band I've ever played with or mixed for combined. They put the work in, they practiced their asses off, and they even entirely re-wrote popular CCM songs so they could play them with the emotion and power you'd expect them to have given the lyrics. It's always stuck out to me even long after giving up on organized religion that a bunch of 14 to 17 year olds playing cowboy chords on their beat up Squiers through 5 watt combo amps are the only ones that ever made me feel like there could be any real, meaningful spiritual aspect to a church.

Crowd surfing, got to see pearl jam playing at u of Hawaii amphitheater for the ten album tour, great concert but Eddie climbed up to the lights was about 20 feet up over ground and it was packed. He dropped and the seas parted immediately straight into the grass. He was down for several min and the rest of the band just kept playing. Give him credit he got back up and finished the concert. They had a concert the next night and friends said he did not do that again!!
Can we take a minute to talk about the lyrics about the chef who picks his nose at 2:30? Everything else was exactly as Mike said, but those lyrics...I have so many questions, starting with "WTF?" and "Why?" It's also worth mentioning that CCM puts me to sleep. I loved singing church hymns when I still attended Mass because the words meant something and some of the songs consistently made me cry...but it's hard to find people who care about the instrumentation as well as the lyrics in CCM. Lyrics don't bleed passion into the rest of the creation, the dull, flat creation undermines everything in the lyrics.
Just got the album and I love it. It came along side LTE3! If only my Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence CD can finally ship to me today my life will be complete
