      As a fellow I5 owner,
1.) why do you think Hyundai doesn’t replace the normal lead acid 12v with the AGM battery like you recommended?
2.) I would def agree not to loose sleep because believe it or not I had the exact same issue with my 2018 Civic I used to own. Had that car for 4yrs 30k miles and went through 2 or 3 12v batteries and I didn’t abuse the car at all. This can happen to ice cars too sadly😅

Corbin, hello again, I am told some ICE cars (my BMW M roadster for one) have charging system computers that are programmed to manage specific Types/capacties of batteries. Hence it may not be a simple matter of just not changing to a larger or different (AGM or Lithium) type of battery. Another note is my daughter purchased her Kia Niro EV Oct 13, 2019, and now is into it’s 5 year with it’s small original 12v battery (same as the one on my EV6) having never had an issue.

I am the new owner of a 2024 EV9 GT-Line and also have a 2023 EV6 green limited edition. Both have had 12V battery issues, the EV6 a few months after I bought it, and the EV9 2 weeks after I took delivery in December. It's been extremely frustrating and it feels like Kia botched the launch.
Overall, it is a fantastic car with a very nice interior and QUIET ride. The second row relaxation package seating is a huge plus - none of my family members fight over where to sit in the car. You should see if a local dealer will loan you one to make a video about.

You featured my Facebook post in the opener. We are in FL, so no cold weather here. After our 12V died, we jumped it (your video on jumping the Ioniq 5 came in clutch, so thanks!) and took to the dealer. Initially it sounded like they were going to replace the 12V. The EV tech came out and then said unless the 12V failed their test, they couldn't replace it, as per Kia guidance. He did mention he saw all the posts on Facebook and Reddit about it, so hopefully it is something Kia fixes. All of this and the deafening silence from Kia really spoiled the car for us. Every day we stressed wondering if the car would be alive the next day. So this past weekend we ended going to our local Ford dealer and we were able to work a trade that got us our value back & put us in a F150 Lightning. Super happy with it and it will fit our needs well. Really disappointed in Kia, but when it was our only car and we have a baby, it just didn't sit right with us.

12V just died in my 2022 Ioniq 5 limited that I bought 18 months ago, I had to jump it every other day since January, finally took it to the dealership. It's been sitting there since Thursday and they're still running tests.
My hunch is that after the ICCU update they applied in November I have almost never seen the orange light on the dashboard, and I've seen it all the time before the update. I think they changed something about the logic that is used to recharge the 12V, and that made it worse. Or they messed something up when installing the ICCU update. Either way, I think the 12V should never ever be dead in a car with a huge traction battery that's full. If it's low, the car should recharge the 12V.
Also I wish the car displayed the 12V health and SOC in the infotainment screen like it displays energy usage. I did notice when "Other electronics" uses 0.5-0.6 kW while driving or in utility mode this means the 12V is low and is being recharged. I did notice this usage drop to 0.1-0.3 kW after a while, which I'm suspecting means that the 12V has been recharged and isn't consuming that much. But having explicit info would be much better. And I wish Hyundai collected telemetry about the 12V health and state of charge. It was insulting when the car was literally dead and I got the monthly email from Hyundai saying all systems are green and everything is great.
    Very frustrating, the whole situation.

I’m gonna be honest with you all. I own a Tesla and thier 12v batteries can go out between 1 to 3 years without warning. But it is a deep cycle battery. It’s all the interior electronics that draw power from it. Being these EV9 are being shipped from over seas Kia maybe putting older batteries in them meaning battery shelf life. Or the battery is just under sized. Maybe the fix is two 12v batteries in series. Gonna be watching this and what the fix could be.

    @filippopossenti1791 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I'm frankly appalled that they didn't solve it yet nor did they engineer a way to prevent the issue in the first place.
It happened to my 3-months old Ioniq 5 in December. The battery died while it was charging and I found the 12V to be measuring 3.46V in the morning, meaning it certainly sustained some significant damage in the process (which of course they won't replace since it's still working).
    1. why do they let those battery discharge so much? At 10.8V a protection circuit should kick in and disconnect it, to prevent damage.
    2. why can't they (for newer models) add this protection circuit and an override connected to the start button, so you can always at least start the car once you get inside it with the key?
    3. as they have voltage sensors, why don't they use them to shut down the electronics once the battery is low if the car is turned off and locked, to prevent stranding people?
There's so many ways, both hardware and software, to stop these issues... yet they don't seem to want to implement any. How are they not worried about reputational damage after all the things that are coming out is beyond me.

I've had an Ioniq 5 since November 2021 and never had a 12V battery issue. And I've never heard of anyone in Australia having a problem either, even in cold weather. So I'm wondering if there is some quirky connection between the home charging setup and the fate of the 12V battery. Most Australian owners charge at home at our standard 240V and between 2 and 7 kW charge rate. I'm wondering if that is leaving our 12V batteries in a sufficiently good state that we don't have any issues? Also, why do only the US models have a 12V battery charging indicator? We don't get that and apparently don't need it - could that piece of circuitry be the culprit? Ironic Ioniq if so!

I understand it’s frustrating and under warranty but they’re not going to replace it with a far superior battery

The battery in my car went dead four times already since I purchased it in march 2022 and I have been stranded on the road twice. I brought it to the dealer three times and they play stupid like this does not happen to anyone else but me. They kind of indirectly fault me for causing the problem as if I do not know how to use a car. I thought of doing a Lemon law on this car but the problem did not start occurring until spring of 2023, in which time, I had over 23K miles already on the odometer and it was too late to file suit in NYS. Sadly, I worry that if I do not use the nearly brand new Ioniq for more than 2 days, I am worried that it will not start. Aside from this 12v battery issue, I find out that my two year old Ioniq5 is only worth 50% of its original msrp value. NEVER EVER A HYUNDAI OR KIA EVER AGAIN!!!!

Design Fault by Hyundai. They use "polled" check, 6x per day on the 12V battery. Means a large power-draw between polls can flatten the battery w/o the car realising! Should have been "interrupt-driven" check, triggered by 12V voltage falling below a safe level. Same system in use since '28 came out circa 2012.

I do have a yellow light (when illuminated) on top of the passenger side dash which I have noticed on a couple times when the car has been turned off. I was told when that light is illuminated the high voltage battery is charging up the 12V battery? Is that true? If so then the 12V battery should never run down. Correct or not??

An AGM battery must be recharged differently than a lead acid battery. The maximum voltage applied to an AGM battery must not exceed 14-15 volts. The lead acid battery can have a voltage applied that is 17 or greater volts. The charging circuitry for a lead acid battery can be very detrimental to an AGM battery. I would NOT replace a lead acid battery with an AGM battery. They are not interchangeable.
