I absolutely love my Martin DSS-17 in Whiskey Sunset. It came with high action and it took me (3) attempts at sanding the saddle down to get the action where I like it. But what a great acoustic Martin offering.
Great demo! Love your presentation.., and your playing is awesome! Just ordered the 000-17 Black Smoke left handed.., ETA April, 2020... aaah the suffering lefty..
Just picked up a second hand 000-17E Whiskey Sunset last night, cannot do the Dreadnaught size guitars anymore, bothers my shoulder after a while, looking forward to playing it!
How lucky you are to be able to try all kinds of guitars, electric, acoustic, and parlor (my favorites) so thank you for showing us all the aspects and models...my favorited are smoke and whisk
@@stormengine3261 yes I did buy the black smoke 000 17 . It’s been 5 years now , wow ! I have a few nice acoustic guitars but this one I play almost every day. It’s just so easy and comfortable. Also the fishman electronics are the best . This guitar is great for finger style. 🤠👍
Mick and Pete rock. Listen to the various styles and chord progressions they can play. They are all-around better players than the one trick pony shredders. From Travis picking to gypsy jazz to blues to rock--I enjoy all their demos.
Really like the show guys. I'm more of an electric guitar guy and you guys seem to be too but I really enjoyed this video and think it was about the best jamming I've heard from you two. Thx for the great info & great vid.
I can't even describe how much i love these videos! I don't think you guys have ever demoed something that i'll ever be able to afford but i don't care :p I was wondering... What's the size of the Danish Pete Gravity picks? Is it like a jazz3 or even smaller?
Ever consider changing out the guitars hanging on the wall? It's cool to see Lee's strats, but I think the vibe would change if you put some acoustics up for these videos. That being said love the video and your playing
Beautiful guitars dream sound to .excellent demo ..lovely playing to ..Don’t know what it is but Marins sound like Martins even the entry range .,The mex Road series...Got that beautiful bass sound ..
Yep I followed the link earlier today, hence my confusion. The 12 fret model you have for sale is shown with no pick-guard (the martin website has only pictures with no pick-guard as well). Can't wait to place my order ;) Thanks for your time!
I'm wondering the same thing. The black smoke model looks so much better with the contrasting pickguard/scratch plate, and review models generally seem to have it, but the 12-fretters I see _for sale_ don't have it.
DirtyBluesStank I just got a 000-17 in black smoke while at the cf Martin factory it still has the fresh wood smell and the looks on video don't do it justice.. it's an amazing guitar audibly and visually.
I'm digging both the jamming and the Hawaiian shirts. I feel that instead of coffee, you should have some sort of umbrella drink. Very nice triple 000's. I was surprised at how different those two guitars sound from each other.
Joy to watch and listen, as per usual. There's one question that has left me restless for a while now - what's the technique Mick does at around 21:33-21:34? Been trying to find out, but to no avail really.
Im pretty gentle with it, but the finish is so thin I have marked it up with little marks. Your fingernail can press right into the finish very easily. Ive heard that a guard will sacrifice some tone
Whats funny is a couple years ago I thought all the people in these videos worked at Andertons selling stuff lol. You two should angle in a little more so both can hear better. Cant wait to see if you two do a video for the holidays.
trying to figure these out i prefer a 12 fret when i look at the 00 17's there are 2 options an 00S 12 fret and an 00L 14 fret it seems from all the sites the 00S17 has no pickguard so your 12 fret with the pick guard is throwing me???
Are Martin's typically higher in cost in the UK vs the US? I purchased mine for $1581. I did have a coupon which the retailer often runs. I was just surprised to see these higher in the UK. Anyway, I purchased the black 00l-17. Normally black acoustics don't appeal to me, but this one just grabbed me. I have to believe the finish is exactly as it would've been in golden era. Just very authentic. The sound is perfect and I play mostly fingerstyle. I plan on holding onto this one for the remainder of my life and hope the family appreciates it as I pass it on down.
I think ... best overall ... 00L-17 in black smoke. Right size, best sound/looks, 14 fret - could benefit from a smidge beefier neck and 2 1/4" string spacing, but that's getting picky. A real winner.
A 000 has more mid and top end than a dread from what I've been gathering from people. You should of got a slope shoulder or a regular dread if you wanted to keep more low end. I already have a Martin D-15M and want something that isn't as bassy in the low end, and that is well rounded for recording. Going to go with a 000-17. You just confirmed this for me even more. You could always take it back and go get the DSS-17 Slope shoulder in whiskey sunset like the 000 you got. It will have more low end thump for you most likely.
General Cornwallis was landing on his ars😮 and Ben Franklin picked up a Martin and wrote. I just called to say I shocked you.😂 Then a Def Leper started Armageddon it, and a Beatle bit Steve Martin playing Covid together on the Banjo. Then they all joined hands and sang Everybody Wang Chung tonight, and America was born with a Constitution that turned their Felons into Presidents. Dan was all wired up and asked we're the penal colony?😊
I know this video is 8 years old. Just wanted to say that I appreciate it and am grateful you posted it, but most people are going to get tired of the rambling intro discussion and skip until they see you playing the guitars.
The "Black Smoke" one is the spitting image of my Gretsch Jim Dandy. Put a sticker over the name and I would have a hard time telling the difference, even by sound.
I can't stand satin finish guitars. Makes them look cheap and fingernails on a chalkboard feels better than holding a satin finished, cheap-looking guitar.
Oh man! Once again, that jam in the end!
6:21 at 0.5 speed
like two drunk old men chatting
Hahahaha Brilliant.
oh my godddd that's perfect
Well Pete is Danish...
9:10 to 9:35 (at 0.5 speed) is pretty good too.
@Dawid aka Grendel I slowed down the speed to 0.5 at the time you suggested, and I am still laughing!
Blown away by Mick's playing at the end. Top notch.
Mick and that Black Smoke 12 fret are a force to be reckoned with. Perfect example of a guitar vibing with the player.
16:10 Seriously cool tone on the 12th fret version and accurate assessment.
12:20 - Mick, I owe you! I haven't written acoustic riffs in forever, and you just gave me some serious inspiration.
Mick is on fire today!
Mick totally rocks! Way to go brudda, you gots it going hep cat rocka...
Yup, I think he's taking that guitar home
Nicholas Dentato He is a great acoustic player!
You nailed characterizing the tone guys. I have a black smoke 00L-17 and it's killer for blues.
The best accoustic duo team back in the day, where are you Mick ?
I absolutely love my Martin DSS-17 in Whiskey Sunset. It came with high action and it took me (3) attempts at sanding the saddle down to get the action where I like it. But what a great acoustic Martin offering.
These videos are awesome need more please!
I love Mick's fingerpicking, one of the main reasons I watch acoustic paradiso
Great review. I just ordered a 00L17 Whiskey Sunset today!
Stefan Grossman would be proud wearing one of those shirts!
Great demo! Love your presentation.., and your playing is awesome! Just ordered the 000-17 Black Smoke left handed.., ETA April, 2020... aaah the suffering lefty..
Metoo!!!
Just picked up a second hand 000-17E Whiskey Sunset last night, cannot do the Dreadnaught size guitars anymore, bothers my shoulder after a while, looking forward to playing it!
I'm diggin' that Whiskey Sunset finish
How lucky you are to be able to try all kinds of guitars, electric, acoustic, and parlor (my favorites) so thank you for showing us all the aspects and models...my favorited are smoke and whisk
13:35 - The head-nod of approval haha
Gotta have the 000 17 ! Whiskey Sunset . Thanks guys for helping me to decide on my next acoustic. Great job
Did you end up buying one?
@@stormengine3261 yes I did buy the black smoke 000 17 . It’s been 5 years now , wow ! I have a few nice acoustic guitars but this one I play almost every day. It’s just so easy and comfortable. Also the fishman electronics are the best . This guitar is great for finger style. 🤠👍
Can definitely hear the mid range punch on the 14-fret! 12 -fret sounds scooped. But both sound great. I love these stripped back models.
I have. D18 and a oox1ae . I love them . but these 17 are really great . I'd love to get one . wow .
agreed Beano, can't help but smile watching that, great jam chaps.
Brilliant outro playing Mick.
Absolutely love mine. Got the 00 14 fret black smoke. Awesome guitar.
you stopped that last jam way too soon 😱 awesome as always
Thanks Mick & Pete, inspirational video, great playing, background knowledge and Martin small body guitars, nice :)
Love the intro! So Americana ! Like the Martin 17's. Perfect demo, boys!
Mick and Pete rock. Listen to the various styles and chord progressions they can play. They are all-around better players than the one trick pony shredders. From Travis picking to gypsy jazz to blues to rock--I enjoy all their demos.
great solo at the end Mick! tasty playing!!!!
The mic'ing has been great on these videos for a while. Really love to listen to these videos!
Never heard Mick play like that before, well done
Fantastic stuff again guys. Come on an acoustic album together guys :-)
Excellent review thank you
What is that final chord in those progressions at 10:58? It looks like a Gsus of some sort but I can't tell for certain
I have perfect pitch when it comes to banjos.I can pitch one into a skip from 20 feet.
How can you tell if the stage is level before a gig? See if the drool is coming out both sides of the banjo players mouth.
It's only perfect if, on the way into the skip, it hits a piano accordion.
G'day guys, that jam at the end was fricken brilliant, cheers.
Really like the show guys. I'm more of an electric guitar guy and you guys seem to be too but I really enjoyed this video and think it was about the best jamming I've heard from you two. Thx for the great info & great vid.
Please , what is exact model of sunburst . It sounded so good !
Love that tv in back ground:)
The black Martin looks very similar to the Gretsch Jim Dandy

I spy a Cap-10 on the wall. Yay. Great episode guys! Love it.
Can you tell me what Gibson you can say is the equivalent to 000 17 basically, L00 or lg2 maybe or g 45? Thank you
wonderful informative review
The black Martin 00-17 in your video does have a white pickguard, but the one shown on Andertons website does NOT have any pickguard.
Why??
I am still trying to figure that out in 2019
Let me know if you figure it out
Mick! Mate! We need some of those tasty open position licks lessons!
Great idea, how about some tutorials there Mick, the stuff you are playing is the stuff I'd like to learn...
Ever consider changing out the guitars hanging on the wall? It's cool to see Lee's strats, but I think the vibe would change if you put some acoustics up for these videos. That being said love the video and your playing

Great session guys!
Can someone enlighten me on the exact models used in this video? All the pictures I have managed to find on the 12 fret one show no pick-guard. Thanks
Hi Pablo, Thanks for your message. The links are in the description.. goo.gl/dTOIIe Thank for watching.

So any answer on this, in the video they say 12 fret for the black smoke, but all the 12 fret models on line across many sites show no pick guard.
Benjamin Lebofsky I think it comes with the guard and putting/attaching it on is optional
Black one looks gorgeous
DirtyBluesStank I just got a 000-17 in black smoke while at the cf Martin factory it still has the fresh wood smell and the looks on video don't do it justice.. it's an amazing guitar audibly and visually.
Kristin Norton did you get the electric acoustic version?
I'm digging both the jamming and the Hawaiian shirts. I feel that instead of coffee, you should have some sort of umbrella drink. Very nice triple 000's. I was surprised at how different those two guitars sound from each other.

In this video the 12-fret guitar has a pick guard, but in most videos the 12-fret version does not have one. What gives?
I bought a 12 fret whiskey sunset and it did not come with one.
Im pretty gentle with it, but the finish is so thin I have marked it up with little marks. Your fingernail can press right into the finish very easily. Ive heard that a guard will sacrifice some tone
He mentioned he added a pickguard, and a very wise thing to do imo
Voicing is wonderful on those two
Whats funny is a couple years ago I thought all the people in these videos worked at Andertons selling stuff lol.

I'm on the search for this answer still.
Could you do review on 15 series sometime please? Thanks!
That's a mighty fine rockability intro there! \m/
are these guitars made from particle board
Are these made In the usa?
yes. Everything from 15 series up is made in Nazareth PA
Banjo Paradiso. Do it!
You guys should do some intermediate lesson videos on some of that fancy playing!
David Brent?

Import duty and all that stuff adds up
Never been here with single digit likes, nice video boys.
How about comparing Matin d-28 and Martin dr centennial.
In which key is the intro?? A??
G I believe. Capo three playing E Chords.
Caleb Hawkins thanks!!
+Caleb Hawkins do you know the outro key? :D
Key of G, yes -- but one guy (w/capo) is playing "E" shape, w/capo III, while the other guy is in regular G.
At 19:22 - "My hole is pointing away from you?!" :o
These guys really crack me up!! LoL!!!
No longer in production. I have the whiskey...perfectly happy.
I think ... best overall ... 00L-17 in black smoke. Right size, best sound/looks, 14 fret - could benefit from a smidge beefier neck and 2 1/4" string spacing, but that's getting picky. A real winner.
The 00-17s is singer songwriter, indie, folk. The other is rock, all round sound.
Very very similar to Collings Waterloo series.
My feeling is Waterloo got so popular, Martin jumped back in! I think the Waterloo’s have more attention to detail.
Love me some Black Smoke.
Where can I get one of those shirts
Yeah...... BUDDY !!!!
Are the shirts a riff on the show title....or a fashion choice? :P
I think this isn't a fashion choice
They only wear them for the Paradiso series.
Poor Pete. I do like Art Deco, though! I think that preceded the depression.
I'm unhappy with my 000-17 (whiskey smoke). It doesn't have the low end I was hoping for. Too trebly by far.
A 000 has more mid and top end than a dread from what I've been gathering from people. You should of got a slope shoulder or a regular dread if you wanted to keep more low end. I have a modern Recording King 00 size, pretty good, and very affordable. Solid top laminated elsewhere.

I swear Pete is Leonardo decaprio who came back from the future to get a few extra years of method acting as a Danish guitar virtuoso
that black one looks like the brown martin john frusciante uses
Watched this video. Want a 00-17. No longer made 😭
Martin went back to its cheep guitars and selling them now for only 1650 :)
They don't sound cheap i have 1 its a fine guitar
Neil Armstrong was landing on the moon in 1771?? I didn't even know they had cars yet :)
I like the bigger body better for some reason ...
Making a guitar that harkens back to a cheap guitar and then selling it for $2000.
Nice.
Whaat? 2k $ the words rip and off come to mind Another reason why I will NEVER buy a ".name" guitar you really DO pay for that name
Oh man, that black thing is my endgame guitar for fingerpicking blues. For now I'll have to settle for the Gretsch Jim Dandy :|
I wish these came in Natural, love the guitars but not the finish
Think Martin was paying homage to spats!!!
Expensive guitars that are supposed to sound, look and feel like cheap guitars from back in the day.
Proxima Centauri I guess someone doesn’t understand inflation.
Would you guys ever consider doing youtube lessons? I wish I was half as good as these guys
A tad bright, no?
Please make a sounds like Metallica by breaking the bank
I can't stand satin finish guitars. Makes them look cheap and fingernails on a chalkboard feels better than holding a satin finished, cheap-looking guitar.
I can’t stand glossy thick finish.
"Very simple, very simple"... I don't think it's that simple to build...
