Taylor 114CE is the only acoustic you'll ever need, all else is gilding the lilly. My advice after 30 years of playing is get a rock solid decent guitar and then stop focusing on gear and focus only on playing and learning something new every day.
The Spaniel Inquisition You've got to stop. You're making too much sense and giving too much valuable and sound advice from someone in this world that is actually qualified to give it. There is no room for that on the Internet.
The Spaniel Inquisition The 114 is a great guitar. You get so much guitar for the money. Same with the 214. The problem is they both have 1 11/16” but width and if you have big hands, play finger style or both, it’s uncomfortable to play.
Let me tell you, I had my mind set on a Martin for years. I was at guitar center playing a bunch of martins and Taylor's and I had basically made up my mind about some 600 dollar Martin dreadnought that sounded beautifully. However, they had this 1 Taylor I was interested in that I saw was locked up on the wall. I asked if they could unlock it and let me play around with it. I sat down, positioned myself and played a G chord. It was like HEAVEN to my ears. The sounds were so bright and crisp yet soft. It wasn't as bassy as the Martin was. Not only did it sound phenomenal, it was very very comfortable to play. I know this because I've always had troubles with bar chords yet playing a bar chord on this guitar was very easy! I've also enjoyed the simplicity of Taylor's. They are very simply designed guitars yet they have that Taylor flair with the pick guard and the brand at the top. Not to mention, the volume knobs on the outside always look very clean to me as an acoustic/electric. Needless to say, I went home with the 114ce and have never been happier with a guitar. Martin's and Taylor's will always be quality guitars however, I don't think one is better than the other. I think it depends on the preference of sounds and tones along with the comfort. If you want a older and deeper sound, get a Martin. If you want a softer but crisper and brighter sound get a Taylor. I've fell in love with my Taylor and I look forward to playing the shit out of it.
Yes I agree not boasting I have 3 Taylor 6 Gibson 1 Martin ovation guild Yamaha I can't pick the best they are all excellent nothing to do with price that's missing the point
@@mikechivy I bought a new Taylor 414ce like you see here. Like all Taylors, it's set up extremely well. It's very precisely constructed - so much so that it's almost robotic. It has a great sound, of course. However, I bought a Gibson J-45 Standard just the other day. To my surprise, it actually has better playability (and not just because it has a shorter scale length) than the Taylor, and I love the sound of it so much. 2 different sounds. Both sound beautiful in their own right. It may seem unfair and like comparing apples and oranges since they're pretty different guitars and everyone has their own sonic preferences, but I actually think the J-45 sounds way better.
I bought a 114e. It has a rich and balanced tone. First acoustic I've bought where you can hear the middle strings. That's true balance. The mids aren't muddied by the low and high strings. It projects well. The volume is on par with a dread.
I have been playing guitar for over 25 years now. Acoustic, flamenco, Electric, etc. Anyway. I am from Québec, Canada. Try to buy local. I had a couple of Seagull, even the Pepino D'Agostino signature. It's okay. 2000$. I was looking for an acoustic guitar that...sound big! I tried all of them. As I sais, being from Québec, try to buy local so I tried Boucher. Dont get me wrong. Amazing guitars. But then I tried Martin, and then Taylor. 7 series, 6.....then 114ce. Didnt looke at the Price. I could not stop playing it. Simply amazing. 1200$ CAD. My advice, if you can afford expensive guitar, go ahead, but I think for the Price, Taylor 114ce is the best option on the market. Don't be a poser. Be a musician.
The fingerpicking comparison at 18:45 (114ce) and 19:33 (414ce) conclusively shows the stronger overtones and even balance on the 414. The 414 sounds refined, and more like a high end acoustic guitar. The 114 with its strong midrange and less overtones is more suited for bluesy style. I like them both.
The issue is that the mics are in different positions for the mics. On the left the mic is over the soundhole, making it warmer and boomier, on the right it is thinner. I think with a good mic and EQ you could make the 114 sound like the more expensive 414.
When I bought my 416ce Spring Limited, I also sat with an 800 series at the same time, A/B'ing them as in this video (it was either the 814ce or 816ce, can't remember now). The 800 was nicer in its appointments and everything, but the 416 just spoke to me more and sounded better. It also worked with my singing voice better than the 800. I was willing to drop the extra on the more expensive guitar, but it's all about what works for you, a better fit. In this video, the 114 sounded superior in every instance- but of course I'm not in the room.
Both guitars sound really good together they definitely complement each other well as seen in the beginning. First ever Taylor I’ve played was a 414ce. I liked it a lot but my first ever Taylor I purchased was an 814ce dlx v brace. I would recommend the 414ce tho really nice sounding guitar
Played both and got the 114CE. While the 414CE was the better guitar the difference was not worth the extra cash. They are both great but which one is right for you is down to how much you are willing to spend.
114CE - Brighter, less balanced across Lows to High 414CE - Not as bright, more balanced across Lows and Highs That is exactly why I went with a 324CE versus a 100 Series, both are great but I prefer the balance and warmth of the Mahogany top of the 324ce but you can't go wrong really with Taylor, I have never picked up an acoustic off the rack and it just felt so good and played and sounded so well!
I had a chance to get a floor model at the end of 2014 for around $1300 out the door and I'm sick I passed up on it. It was in perfect condition too. I've grown to really like the 414 and love the tone of the ovangkol. In the last year my wrists and hands have started really bothering me when playing and pretty much all of my guitars have boat necks, which is what I prefer. I don't have this issue with Taylor's. There have been a couple of occasions where I've spent a couple of hours playing a Taylor and had almost no issues with my wrist/hand. They are so easy and comfortable to play. Anyway, the 414 does indeed have a sweet tone and just works for all styles in my opinion, but truly excels at fingerstyle (again, just my opinion).
Mick is back! All is right in the world....the Taylor's both sound great. Pete can you demo how you strum and hold your pick? I strive to achieve that smooth quality you have developed.
Really good demo. Well done and hit on all the things that make a guitar good. I have played my 1978 Guild D40 for all these years and it is a awesome guitar with great tone and volume. I don't want to keep taking this old classic out to shows. So that where the Taylor 414 CE comes in. That Taylor 414 sounded awesome from the first sit down in shops acoustic guitar room. Great tone and balance and volume. I did not ant to put it down and that is a good thing.
Picked up a 114ce for 450.00 over the weekend it’s a sapele 2015 model, a bit dehydrated but it’s cleaning up quite nice and looks and smells brand new. Apparently was not being played and was just sitting wasting away. I will give her a good home.
They both sound very good. I've played both. Sound is subjective however the 414CE is better in many ways. The tone is far more controlled and focused (less overtones.) The fit and finish is much nicer. You feel like you are playing something special- because you are. All Taylors feel good to play. I would prefer a 714ce (next model up from the similar 414ce.) I would however only buy one that is a 2017 or older. Many people, and I much prefer the old X bracing (far more bass) vs. the new V bracing in most of the new Taylor guitars, 3xx, 4xx, 7xx, 8xx series. That said, the 114CE is a great value and it sounds very nice. For a first or second guitar, it will do the job very well. What I found was that after a while (hours) the tone was a little too unfocused so the mids get scooped a bit. You hear a lot of chiming/ringing on the 114. It sounds very good at first, but it lacks the depth of the 414. Over time, the real wood on the 414 will open up and sound even better. On the other hand, the benefit of laminates on the 114 is stability. It's less likely to crack over time. Both are good choices. If you are on a budget, grabbing a slightly used 114CE for
I purchased a 114CE last year, chosen from about a dozen acoustics. Unfortunately the feedback, when used live, into a decent PA system, was uncontrollable. I tried sound hole plugs and even a couple of different PA systems but nothing solved it. Taylor kindly replaced all the electronics but it was the same result. I regret not keeping the guitar because it's acoustic sound was so exceptional. Maybe it was just an overly lively example of the 114CE. I never found anything that came close to the quality of the sound from it.
I gotta say. I have a 114e, and absolutely love it. From watching the video, the 114 (to me at least) sounds better on almost all aspects. The only thing the 414 has going for it is that it's a lot prettier and maybe has a little more nuanced sound, but nothing that would make a huge difference.
DerpyDackles42 idk, I love the simplicity to the 114. With the black trim that matches the volume knobs, it's a very cleaner look. I'm not too keen about the white trim on the 414. It's subjective but my 114 is absolutely beautiful. It's magical in a way because it looks so simple yet plays like HEAVEN.
Great review. I have both a 414CE and a GS Mini. I Love the complex overtones and harmonics that jump out of the 414CE and the way it sits in a mix with a band but I also love the playability and warm tones out of the GS Mini. Different hammers indeed.
I have a 114ce I got like 10 years ago and I still prefer and play it more over my more expensive 214-CE K DLX. The 114ce is just so bright and loud - its sounds amazing. The only downside on the 114ce is its not laminated so I have a ton of dings and scratches on it.
The mic positions change what you hear from the guitar. You can take the same guitar, record it a the 12th fret, then at the bridge, and the recordings will sound different from each other, it could even sound like different guitars. For these to have any worth in comparing two different guitars, you need to have consistency in mic placement.
Of coarse, but I mean you shouldn't compare guitars from different videos, by different TH-cam channels. The audio tracks could vary too much. The Acoustic Letter channel did tons of reviews of guitars, all in the same way. Another thing is that TH-cam condenses the audio, so what we hear is slightly different than what they heard in the room as they played it.
I have a 100 series 6 string and 12 string, both times I went to buy them I had budgeted for a higher grade model, but preferred the 100 series. I suspect the lack of bracing in the back means the soundwaves inside are not inhibited by the braces, and I am absolutely sure that the lack of varnish on the 100 series means that the bodies and especially the tops, are freer to vibrate. I'm not a precision player, if I was I might appreciate a higher series model, but I find the 100 series to sound a lot freer and pleasantly rowdy. I wouldn't trade up.
Love this comparison. As it so happens, I own a 114e (no cutaway) and a 414cer with V- brace Love them both but I must say that for the money the 114 is the finest guitar for the money.
I took a day and played a bunch of different Taylors, to me nothing felt as nice or sounded as good as the 414ce V-class. Ashame I wasn't ready to drop ~$2500 US on it. I just kept going back to it.
414 sounds fuller for sure but 114 sounds pretty dang good for the price gap. Now days the 100 series Taylor has been discontinued and now they’re just doing all 200 series so the 200 series is very nice. It’s that bolt on neck that’s awesome too with out of the box perfect action. For the price of the 200 series as starting at $1200.00 you can’t beat that. Another great deal in the guitar world is the Alvarez MASTERWORKS guitars. Starting at only $700.00 you get a really nice guitar with all solid wood construction. Top, back & sides, and like the Taylor, the Alvarez has some pretty good action as well. But yeah I’d love to have a 200 series Taylor. Great guitars for a great price.
Interesting... Perhaps it is the way the guitars are mic'd but the 114 sounds better balanced to my ears. The 414 sounds fuller, but like the 814 (vs the 614) is biased toward the bass tones.
Wow, in the 5 years since this was recorded the 114 has dropped in price and the 414 has substantially increased in price. Inflation and demand does odd things...
Love your videos!! I'm curious, what pick thickness do you each use? Are they the same because that can have such a huge impact on the tone. I find even just changing from a .60 to a .73 is quite noticable, and if you go .90 and up the tone continues to get darker.
Personally, I feel the more decoration and finish they put on the Taylors, the more it affected how open it sounded. Personally like the 114CE. The finished ones seem to choke up when it comes to sustain.
Definitely was not expecting this. The 414 sounds terrible plugged in while the 114 sounded very close to a mic'ed guitar. The 414 definitely has some more depth, but the 114 is not too far behind it. I actually think it sounds better for fast strumming.
This reminded me of when i first went out to buy my firet "real" acoustic guitar. I went in with the idea i wanted a small body acoustic. Fast forward a couple of hours and i'm walking out with the largest dreadnought they had for sale. Don't let your preconceptions guide you choices!
Yesidoplaytheguitar agreed! I went in looking to buy either a 314ce or 414ce (both spruce tops) and walked out with a 324ce. I didn't expect to love the Mahogany tones
Although I like the unique fingerpicking sound of the 414, I much prefer the 114 for strumming and soloing because to my ears it has a better shimmering high end raw sound.
Haha why should one go to high end when as low 114ce value could match same performance? I dont think its the durability that matters...nice observation partners keep up.
Danish Pete is primarily and electric guitar player, so the thinner nut makes sense as far as feeling better in his hand. Also, when you put a mic I front of a guitar you get a totally different sound than the acoustic sound in the room. All there videos are nicer.
To me, it seems as if the 414 has a more defined sound throughout the different ranges while the 114 is brighter in the high ends and maybe a bit weaker in the other areas compared to the highs
I just played both of these.... I liked the 114 better as well. I liked the varnish finish and with the ever so slightly narrower nut I did think the neck felt slimmer. I wrote it off as a Mexico vs american made but I did enjoy the slimmer neck. The tone of the 314 sounds better as a stand alone instrument, but I really think the 114 would sound better in a mix. I'm getting the 114 for a treat yourself b-day present.
I,ve tried the Martin Minis, the Taylor Minis but they're no match for Australian Made , All Solid Maton Minis. Played by Keith Urban, Tommy Emmanuel, Diesel & John Butler, to name a few decent player's, try them out Chappers & Captain. Come to Australia & check them out.
Kivencito it depends on what model, but the cheapest Maton is however more expensive than that of Martin and Taylor, but you are paying for a much less mainstreamed building process
My opinion is High end Taylor Guitars are way more better than the Maton guitars I chose the Taylor guitars ,Maton just didn't do it for me, Taylor better be playability and superior sound ,This is my experience.
Ive played all sorts of taylors, 100s, 200s, 400s, 800s. Ive owned a 110 for 10 years. I also own a Martin om28. To my ear the 410 is better, but not by that much.

Another thing is that TH-cam condenses the audio, so what we hear is slightly different than what they heard in the room as they played it.
My 2 fav dudes for guitar reviews. Thanx!
first time watching these guys, love them !
I actually prefer the brighter sound of the 114 to the 414
How about a 12-string shoot out? I could get on board with that!
Settled on the new 114ce walnut. Thanks guys. Flamingos ftw
Nah, it is not . An Yamaha LS16 absolutely murder it for the same money
Super fun jam at the beginning!
I’m thinking of getting a Taylor 214ce Koa Deluxe. Would you recommend that? :D
no get the 224
I would like to see you guys do a blind review of some acoustics. I think perception might be a little different. Would be interesting
Playing solo on their jam is amazing feeling.
the 114 resonates soooooo naturally
I took a day and played a bunch of different Taylors, to me nothing felt as nice or sounded as good as the 414ce V-class. Ashame I wasn't ready to drop ~$2500 US on it. I just kept going back to it.
do these both have the ES-2 system installed?
no.. the 214 deluxe has the es2..the lesser versions of the 214 and all versions of the 114 are es1
Michael Heehaa sorry but that's not true at least anymore. My 114ce is a es2 system
Looking back at this video at 11:20 seconds in he actually explains about the es2 system on the 114ce.
Yes, they are the same.
That was the coolest acoustic blues jam EVER
Great review. Got me the 114...HAPPY!
Opening riff is amazing
Very entertaining but also informative. I also prefer Elixir strings to other makes.
Love your videos!!
I'm curious, what pick thickness do you each use? Are they the same because that can have such a huge impact on the tone.
I find even just changing from a .60 to a .73 is quite noticable, and if you go .90 and up the tone continues to get darker.
one of these guys is using a THICK pick - sounds really aggressive
Pete: "You pick something up, you play it, and it's nice" - this is the only way to choose a guitar.
I always describe it as "buy the guitar that says hello"- you'll just know when it happens.
Will you be doing a review on the new Taylor 414ce rosewood special edition?
anyone know the intro song?
Why do I prefer the "more affordable " one?
I'm practicing for atleast 40 min a day I wont give up I will be able to play!!
Scorpio, So after a year of practice, how You doin’?
@@futuredirected I think he must still be practicing.
Rajesh Gumber LOL! I hope he’s still practicing AND playing.
@@futuredirected perhaps he is practising that much that he doesn't have time to reply?
still going strong didn't get any notifications tho :/
You guys are great! Always smiling and laughing it's a pleasure to watch! Hey it would be awesome if you guys did some reviews of seagulls or yamahas.
Seagulls? Flamingos not enough? :)
Personally, I feel the more decoration and finish they put on the Taylors, the more it affected how open it sounded. Personally like the 114CE. The finished ones seem to choke up when it comes to sustain.
I've pondered on the same thing. Between the 214 and 214 dlx I always prefer the standard which comes with a satin finish.
Definitely was not expecting this. The 414 sounds terrible plugged in while the 114 sounded very close to a mic'ed guitar. The 414 definitely has some more depth, but the 114 is not too far behind it. I actually think it sounds better for fast strumming.
114ce is way too bright for my taste. It's totally subjective the brightness can be a good thing. For the way I play 414ce is much better.
Wouldn’t a comparison of the 114 and a 314 be more appropriate?
This reminded me of when i first went out to buy my firet "real" acoustic guitar. I went in with the idea i wanted a small body acoustic. Fast forward a couple of hours and i'm walking out with the largest dreadnought they had for sale. Don't let your preconceptions guide you choices!
Yesidoplaytheguitar agreed! I went in looking to buy either a 314ce or 414ce (both spruce tops) and walked out with a 324ce. I didn't expect to love the Mahogany tones
That Emaj7 at the end of the intro was the best
I've played the Diesel it has blackwood back & sides a wood from Tasmania it sounds awesome too.
Can we please hear Pete speak danish?
that 414 sounds beautiful
I don't know if it's just me ....Does the 414 sound more "woody"?
agree
The 114 looks smaller than the 414 ? Is it a smaller body size ?
Although I like the unique fingerpicking sound of the 414, I much prefer the 114 for strumming and soloing because to my ears it has a better shimmering high end raw sound.
I am not sure or doubtful that some services if not generally that outsourcing the services is not really happening here.
Can you guys do a shootout vid between the Gibson J200 & the Sigma GJA S200? I want to see how good a $1000 guitar from China really is
Miss Mick and Pete’s Presentation & things 👆
Haha why should one go to high end when as low 114ce value could match same performance? I dont think its the durability that matters...nice observation partners keep up.
really enjoyed this
convinced me to buy a taylor
oooo eeee
Why did Taylor discontinue the 114?
Danish Pete is primarily and electric guitar player, so the thinner nut makes sense as far as feeling better in his hand. Also, when you put a mic I front of a guitar you get a totally different sound than the acoustic sound in the room. All there videos are nicer.
To me, it seems as if the 414 has a more defined sound throughout the different ranges while the 114 is brighter in the high ends and maybe a bit weaker in the other areas compared to the highs
Can you all do a review of drum boxes (cajon's)?
I just played both of these.... I liked the 114 better as well. I liked the varnish finish and with the ever so slightly narrower nut I did think the neck felt slimmer. I wrote it off as a Mexico vs american made but I did enjoy the slimmer neck. The tone of the 314 sounds better as a stand alone instrument, but I really think the 114 would sound better in a mix.
I'm getting the 114 for a treat yourself b-day present.
They both made in usa?
I,ve tried the Martin Minis, the Taylor Minis but they're no match for Australian Made , All Solid Maton Minis. Played by Keith Urban, Tommy Emmanuel, Diesel & John Butler, to name a few decent player's, try them out Chappers & Captain. Come to Australia & check them out.
Yeah, love to see you guys do a Maton vid!
Agreed
Hey, friend. Are maton guitars more expensive than taylor and martin?
Kivencito it depends on what model, but the cheapest Maton is however more expensive than that of Martin and Taylor, but you are paying for a much less mainstreamed building process
My opinion is High end Taylor Guitars are way more better than the Maton guitars I chose the Taylor guitars ,Maton just didn't do it for me, Taylor better be playability and superior sound ,This is my experience.
which is the name of the song that they played at the beginning?
Playing along on my Tanglewood TW170 AS CE sorry guys but it's keeping up!
Ive played all sorts of taylors, 100s, 200s, 400s, 800s. Ive owned a 110 for 10 years. I also own a Martin om28. To my ear the 410 is better, but not by that much.
