I bought the actual D-18 standard used in this video from Andertons yesterday. It’s a beauty and glad that it got a good strumming by you boys first.

I went to guitar center to buy a d-18 and came home with a Gibson j-45 standard. No comparison.

@@jimmycollette9209 No comparison is right since they are completely different & it depends what you're after. I went into multiple guitar shops thinking I wanted a J-45 and every time far preferred the Martins (D18, D28 etc). I found the Martin's had a woodiness and mid-range that was lacking in the J-45 for my tastes. Horses for courses!

@@arcticsound7341 I have two martins. I have a hd-28 and d-35 is why I wanted a d-18 because I wanted a mahogany body. There was no comparison in the action of the two. I would have had the d-18 action lowered plus the finish was better on the j-45 and the shorter scale length really fits me and more comfortable to play since I'm a short dude. What's so great is they're so many choices and great guitars to choose from. Keep picking brother.

My Martin D-18 dream recently came true. Purchased it two weeks ago. Mark Knopfler, my guitar hero, wrote most of his songs on a D-18. His D-18 is from 1935 though.

The D-18 has been on my list of guitars I need to get one day. This video convinced me it has to be on the top of that list. The sound of the standard version is everything I want from a guitar.
This is going to be 12 months living on bread and water.

Worth every penny amigo. Tip: buy used to stay below $2300, and play several, w/ new strings if you can, bc most are monsters but occasionally some are duds, tho sometimes all they need are new strings. Hope you got killer one by now and are in acoustic heaven.

@@jazzlehazzle : I HAVE been living on bread and water for 12 months (and then some more), but I went for a slightly different route. I bought a D-28. I actually preferred the D-18, but I wanted something that was the furthest away in terms of sound from the J-45 I already had. And immediately after I payed for that guitar I ordered a Martin 00-15m for a very good price. I’m glad I did. I love that guitar! And then I started to sell a bunch of my old electrics and I found the most beautiful 000-18. And as if this wasn’t enough… I just bought an Eastman OM style guitar. I wanted something to use for downtuning to C, C#, or D standard. I used to do this with an Epiphone Dove Pro, but I sold that one. This Eastman is just ridiculous. All solid wood construction, scalloped bracing, bone nut and saddle, impeccable work of art for a laughable price.
I never thought I would ever own another good guitar. 16 months later I have my old Gibson AND three Martins. And I’m not a wealthy guy by any stretch of the imagination.
I still wonder if it would have been better if I bought the D-18 instead of the D-28. But if I hadn’t done it that way, I’d be asking myself the same question, but vice versa. 😊

This is a life time investment. My father purchased his D-18 back in 1945 and played it all his life. Back in 1962 I brought it back to the old factory in Nazareth and they replaced some of the warn out frets, reset the bridge and fixed a crack in the side for free as my father was still alive. I loved the tone of that guitar but the action was high. That was back in 2003 when I moved to South Korea.
I hated to part with it but gave it to my nephew as he played a mean guitar blues style that really fit the guitar. He had the neck reset and replaced the frets as needed and the guitar goes on after almost eighty years. I took that guitar on a hitch hiking trip around the west back in 1963 when I was in college. When I ran out of money I would go to a bar and put out my hat and earn enough to get on to the next state. When I lived in Alaska in 1966, I would play and write songs for my geology department and take it with me when mapping the basalt on Central Alaska afore my MS. The only place I did not take it was to Vietnam back in 1968-9. Missed it terribly but that’s life. It was with me until I moved. Always there to play and bring back memories of when I was young and foot loose and free. I loved the thought of my dad purchasing the guitar back in 1945 for $75! I will always admire this D-18 model and Martin Guitar. It is definitely a lifetime friend to pass on to your future generations!

Hey guys, you know what? I've been listening to your videos for some time now, and I just saw this one from two years ago. Can I say I really appreciate YOUR honest assessment of the instruments you demo? It really shows through. Right now, I'm in the middle of assessing which mahogany guitar I will buy (it's between Froggy, Martin, and Taylor now), and this video helped a LOT. Your obvious preference for the original D-18 shows through, no, SHINES through. I also think the original D-18 is the real deal. The Modern Deluxe is a great guitar, no doubt, (and you do have to sell it), but pales in terms of sound with the original D-18. The Modern Deluxe sounds more like a Taylor than a Martin, in my ears. Believe me, I am trying just about EVERYTHING for the past few weeks, including Gibson and Collings. A shout out to the Martin Authentic D-18 Aged, now THAT is the 'real deal' if anyone is interested to hear a Martin sound. Even better than an original D-18. It could be the authentic fittings (glued saddle, hide glue, non-adjustable truss rod, torrified Adirondack spruce top and bracing, x bracing placement, etc), I don't know... but that one is giving even the Froggy a real fight for my money, in my honest opinion.

  • @jazzlehazzle
    @jazzlehazzle ปีที่แล้ว +2

Played them both in person, LOVE the sound of both, MD definitely has more clarity and overall balance, but the reg. D-18 has a rich, throbbing bass hum and sweet honey mids that come from nothing else on the planet. With the right strings, its highs can overcome the thin sound they sometimes give, just use one gauge heavier high E & B than the rest of your strings and WOW.

I wonder how you guys would rate the "sound" and "EQ" of those guitars as recorded - microphones (choice, placement, room, etc) can make any guitar sound very different depending on what you're going for! Would be nice to see a comparison of Martin v Yamaha v Gibson v Taylor to get 4 *quality* guitars of similar price, and see how the EQ/playability differs (with your prefered strings, to control against the difference in sound being just the string brand/gauge)

@@707king Because time moves on and a lot of people (like myself) actually prefer the modern upgrades. In a mix or on stage, you will not even notice a difference if you are playing it. However, you WILL notice a difference in fret wear due to the newer EVO gold frets and weight due to the lighter truss rod. A lot of us appreciate these things and see them as improvements to an already great design. I think its funny that such a large swath of players of certain genres just cannot move on from the 1940's and 1950's. We are carrying computers in our pockets now and riding in self-driving cars, but guitar companies cannot improve their guitars? Heresy!!!!

yes the STD D-18 rules in sustain and mystery vibes
the naturally uncompressed bass and mid range we're really doing
a great micro.... vibrato...tremelo thing on the STD D-18.
Even the high notes rang louder and LONGER at the end with
the lowest strings still ringing over tones.
The modern D-18 was more evenly compressed and more 'linear' as noted.
I did not like it near as much. That lighter titanium truss rod is not the iron
and steel of the STD D-18. Something goes missing in the sustain department.
That mystery "Jangle" of the STD D-18 is priceless. And, copied by everyone
in the business of knowing what a D-18 Standard is all about

The guitar style was not just named for "a battleship". The HMS Dreadnought of 1906 changed naval warfare completely. Back when the Royal Navy ruled the seas. Remember, "Rule Britania! Britania rule the waves!" Of course in these days with Brexit just 90 days away, Pete might as well be singing the praises of Canute. Back to guitars. I like the standard; always have, always will. Most D28s are too bassy for me. I prefer the mids from a great mahogany guitar and the standard D-18 is just that. Now, if I were asked to choose between a 1940 and a 2019, I would choose the 1940 in a heartbeat. But give me the standard.

I bought my first Martin brand new. It was an HD-28V and was the most incredible sounding guitar I had ever played. After a couple months of winter I was looking to it on the stand, all pale and milky and thought what an ugly guitar for that price. Then one day in the spring I took it outside and played in the sun on a picnic table. Next day it was beautiful and looked like a vintage Martin. The sun triggers the aging toner..

I have the 000-18 MD and prefer it to the standard for the same reason I moved away from dreadnoughts now. I 'm getting away from the bigger boom-box sound. Yes the MD's are brighter and have more clarity, also more sustain. They play like bells and are very responsive. But then I always preferred the mahogany D-18's to any new Martin at any price or with any fancy cosmetics. I just can't keep spending money on everything I like. If I were to get another Martin It's be the D-18 MD. These guitars are amazing. I'd like to a comparison video of the D-18 MD to the 000-18 MD.

I want the standard with the deluxe pearl head stock inlay but they don't sell them like that from the factory. You'd have to order a custom shop and that would take about a year and cost $1000 more. I've asked.

If Martin used Hyde glue on the guitar I would buy the D18, as of what I understand its only on the Modern deluxe or custom shop Martins...correct?

They can't for copyright reasons. Anyone not selling something can get away with it, but it's a shop.

@@olli96r91 Yes, even a little bit. They've mentioned it when they get "close" to any song, they'll point out that they have to be careful because the video will get yanked.

I prefer the standard but I can imagine the modern deluxe would stand out more in a mix with less Eq tweaking

Lovely. Question, do you think it’s worth it to go for the VTS system and the HIDE GLUE. Expensive options. Perhaps just a basic D18? Thanks man!

Danish Pete and Captain! Is there any chance I could get the tabs for the solo you guys did? It's honestly one of my favourite things I've ever heard on the acoustic guitar!! 😅

The Deluxe sounds a little brighter on the treble side but that could be attributed to the metal end pins. I still love the standard. Ya just cannot beat tried and true. Once you own a Martin, you know you are taking a back-seat to no one.

Sometimes I wish I could afford a really expensive acoustic guitar like these, but then I hear Pete playing and I think it wouldn't sound as good, so I'm relieved

Ok why is the video over??? I was loving the Martin Jam. Lee especially good today, getting the Martin love on. Pete, the guitar god as always! Having owned several Martins and playing many others I have to agree with Lee. Martin Standard Tone is it. As Pete said you can always tell a Martin. Personally every D-18 I have played sounded exactly like a D-18. New ones, old ones all sounded completely familiar. The Modern does not sound familiar. Why even call it a D-18? If you want a D-18 buy the standard. I like the idea of a modern Martin but, call it a D-19 or something else. It is brighter, louder and I liked it hummm, sounds like a Taylor. In a head to head and on paper in some ways a better guitar by the Martin team. What is next the Modern Big Mack. Somethings dont need to change.

Just because it is different does not mean the Modern Deluxe does not sound as good. For everyone who says the original sounded "better" I would say to you that it is first, subjective and second, you are likely just hearing what you are used to. They both sound fantastic and (again subjective) to me they both sound like D-18's. In fact, I would bet any amount of money I could find an original D-18 that sounded just like the Modern Deluxe even though the one in the shootout does not.
