Great design! To stabilize your legs, unfold the legs and place the toilet in business position, then drill a hole through the portion where the elbow connects to the tee base and stick a pin through both sides to eliminate play. This will allow you to secure your toilet legs without losing its folding ability. It may be helpful to also anchor the pins to the base using a chain or string. Happy camping everyone.
i made one from your description. I prefer the original to the suggest mod version - I added end caps to the 3 open leg ends, for two reasons. Firstly, coming from Australia with a plethora of deadly creepy/crawlies, we try not to have spaces for them to reside. Secondly, the caps will not allow you to fill the legs with soil which can make you SUV RV crappy in no time.
Lol, I just took an older lawn chair I had and cut the plastic straps outta seat, than went and got a cheap durable plastic toilet seat and I took the lid off it and attached seat to seat frame... you'll need some imagination for this. Without the lid on it it the chair has no problem folding up like normal. I take a small shovel with me when I camp and pull a scoop out and place chair over it and put it back when I'm done lol....a bag would also work....I truly have a throne! Caught my 13 yr old son with his elbows on armrests using that dam phone lol
Brilliant and hilarious :) this is just the issue I've been working on. Bought a Reliance 3-legged toilet, like the seat and lid a lot- much along these lines, but still 5" thick *if* you can get the legs to fold down after use (they click into place and I always have one that refuses to retract after use!)
Yeah, I had the same thoughts after looking at the toilet options already out there. I figured there must be a better way. Turns out there is, but you've got to make it yourself! Thanks Sophi.
Very cool! Maybe drilling some holes through the PVC joints and using some large cotter pins would help with preventing a possible collapse in either direction? Just a thought...not sure if drilling the PVC might weaken it too much...but regardless, great idea!
This is exactly what I want to do. I can't believe I had not seen this video. (I try to see all your videos) Anyway... I know you have something even smaller now... But I am glad you did this first! Home Depot here I come! LOL! :-)
Great Idea... Any idea's how to stabilize the legs to keep them from moving at all when you're sitting down? I am a clutz and can imagine falling into my mess.
I was in Cal-Ranch in Layton today for something else on the camping aisle. Guess what! They have that lid/seat combo! Now I'll have to go back and pick one up. :o)
It works great! I love that it takes up much less space than any of the commercially available options out there. And it doesn't get much cheaper than PVC pipe.
Thanks for the share. I was thinking I could just put a toilet seat, sans the lid, on my small painters/clothes wash bucket lined with a bag...or just a trimmed pool noodle fully covered with the plastic bag...or...or...
So, I built one both ways, legs going different ways. Either way it was very unstable. Any lateral movement while actually sitting on it caused the legs to start folding in or out. Once that starts, its all over but the collapsing. I modified it totally and got a working design, but as shown it doesn’t.
wow, you should have marked this.... you could make good money.....and I can make the legs longer if I wanted......PERFECT.... really....you should sell theses
Well, I think it's for S - -T! BUTT in a PINCH; I reckon it would handle a LOAD. Sorry, just couldn't help myself. With a couple of extra PVC adapters you could probably figure out a swing up paper holder. Also, for extended use the kitty litter, and I'm not talking about using a ton of it, will keep smell to a minimum and not be necessary to empty it each time or even daily. I have practiced the 'use and cover' method with small helpings of: sand, cedar shavings, loose dirt, etc. for as long as a week (2 people and mostly peeing elsewhere), with white, tall kitchen bags, then a heavier black bag. (not the super heavy contractor's type). As I mentioned above, never had any smell problem nor too much weight for the plastic bags plus the eco-friendly savings of using fewer petro-chem products. I DOO like the idea though.
Yeah, you could definitely add a TP holder if you were so inclined, but that's not something I think is essential. I generally try to use the toilet at gas stations or fast food restaurants whenever possible, so I rarely use the portable toilet for more than a couple of times in a row. Thanks for sharing your experience.
You'd have to find a public location where there are trash receptacles. My local park has free baggies for dog-walkers to clean up after their pets, and the trash barrels are often filled 50% or more with doggie bags. So, adding a "human" bag would be OK. Or using trash barrels outside a big store (where you are shopping anyway) is another disposal location.
I'd be tempted to shorten the legs and just dig a 6 inch hole. Some areas (like desert) you'd need to carry out TP but that's way easier than all those smelly bags. Logs work nicely but they aren't ubiquitous. If someone made a portable log I'd buy it. :)
SUV RVing ...I need one to fit on the floor between the back of the driver's seat and the back seat in my quad cab pick up truck and I've been having a time figuring it out!!!
If you've got the space inside your vehicle, I don't see why it wouldn't work. You'd just have to make the legs quite short if you're going to use it on top of a seat. You could also stick it on the floor of the SUV behind the front seats and in front of the back seats, which I think would probably be the better option.
How about a good old bed pan lined with garbage bags? Used that for trips with my kids in an emergency. Worked in a pinch. We threw in kitty litter to absorb whatever then threw waste away after each use. Just sat it on the seat when needed and kept it in the trunk (bags, toilet paper, wipes, and small bag of kitty litter fit inside) when not.
It just doesn’t hold you up. With full body weight on it, ANY shifting causes the legs to start folding. Once that starts you’d better get off as the next movement will be to the ground onto your pile. If the legs were glued this wouldn’t happen, but that kinda defeats the purpose of being able to fold down.

GENIOUS!! I've learned the most valuable information on your site. No buckett to take up space.
I'm definitely anti-bucket. If you've got a small space, a bucket is just too big and bulky!
Much more elegant than the bucket! Great idea.
I've since found an even better solution. Stay tuned :)
Binged watch your videos on suvrving, pretty resourceful and this is genius!
Glad you like the videos! Thanks for watching and commenting, Mike.
Great design. Compact! I already have my seat and bucket, so I think I'll still use that. Love your creativity.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching, Edie!
Love the demo!!! Thanks for the tip re rocking motion...good point!

This young man is a genius!
Clever! It looks so COLLAPSE-ABLE!
bright idea and strong as the pipes also using so much less space
Some rubber end caps for the legs would definitely help.
Awesome ! What are the dimensions of the center piece the seat sits on ? Thanks for your time !!!!
You are a genius my friend if I can find the patience im gonna make one for my rig. You should sell em bro id buy one if the price is reasonable!
Hi, 👋..
Great creation! What's the maximum sitting weight that it holds??
Thanks Again For Sharing

Hmm, interesting idea with the cotter pins. I think the schedule 40 PVC is strong enough that that would work. Thanks!
I was thinking and imagining me flat on the ground with it going one way or the other! it would be my luck. LOL
OMG! Such smart idea
Great idea!! Love your channel.
Can you provide directions on how to make this, please? I'd like to make one for our road trips. Thanks so much! This is awesome.
Hmmm. I don't quite know what directions would be able to add to this. What exactly is unclear after watching the video?
I would say the directions would be cut list. Not everyone can determine sizing from the video is what I am getting. Great video and very ingenious !
I use a small black outside bag for my waste That way it is not visible when you go to dispose of it!
When in the open position I would drill holes through the fitting and pipe and insert pins. That would keep it from folding up.
What a great idea!
Thanks!
I was in Cal-Ranch in Layton today for something else on the camping aisle. Guess what! They have that lid/seat combo! Now I'll have to go back and pick one up. :o)
Nice! Let me know if you end up making one.
Really cool. Gotta make one.
It works great! I love that it takes up much less space than any of the commercially available options out there. And it doesn't get much cheaper than PVC pipe.
Nicely done.
Thanks Gigi.
Ingenious!
Genius! Thanks for your help!
Useful info. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the share.

Sorry it didn't work for you. I don't use this design anymore, but I used it a bunch and it worked fine.
wow, you should have marked this.... you could make good money.....and I can make the legs longer if I wanted......PERFECT.... really....you should sell theses
Eh, I'm not too interested in selling these right now. But I'm glad you like the idea. Thanks Alvara!

Ray Sills ...ok thanks so much.
Great job!
tyfs
Could you please write the length of the legs please. Kind regards Michael from Denmark
Ingenious
What kind of glue did you use to glue the parts that don’t move?
Thank you great idea
Thank you.. super
Got a link to your new toilet? I couldnt find it
Brilliant, thank you for sharing! 💩🙌🏼
You could use cotter pins so it won't move
PVC pipe is like baking soda, a million uses for it.....LOL. I watch a guy who's done a lot with PVC, and I've never seen him to this. Great idea.
Definitely true! And yeah, I don't know of anyone else who's done something like this, but it works well. Thanks cyberi4a.
awesome
Brilliant!
Thanks!
Drill holes into the pieces that swivel and put pin in it so it cant rotate without removing them
what size bag?
Love this idea! How long are your pvc pipes?
Not sure, sorry!
Oh Lord!!! 3 legs??? You know what I'd end up lying in...
I'd be tempted to shorten the legs and just dig a 6 inch hole. Some areas (like desert) you'd need to carry out TP but that's way easier than all those smelly bags. Logs work nicely but they aren't ubiquitous. If someone made a portable log I'd buy it. :)
Yep, shortening the legs would certainly work. Lol I think a portable log is basically a box :)
Why wouldn't you just bury the toilet paper? It'll break down in soil.
Where do you throw poop?
I sat on the one they sell at Walmart like this one and it fell down and I fell off of it in the store tonight. made a big crash. it seems unstable.
Yeah, those aren't the best. I'm constantly on a quest for a better camp toilet, and I think I may have just hit the jackpot. Stay tuned :)
SUV RVing ...I need one to fit on the floor between the back of the driver's seat and the back seat in my quad cab pick up truck and I've been having a time figuring it out!!!
teakertown...Oops-A-Dazy!!!
You could use pool noodles for comfort and too hold bags. Nice potty though
You could retire, market the toilet. I would buy it.
I don’t care for the smell of kitty litter so I use pine chip small animal bedding! Absorbent, light weight and smells nice
Very cleaver
Can it be adapted to use inside the suv? I'm looking to make something sturdy for the back seat of mine.
If you've got the space inside your vehicle, I don't see why it wouldn't work. You'd just have to make the legs quite short if you're going to use it on top of a seat. You could also stick it on the floor of the SUV behind the front seats and in front of the back seats, which I think would probably be the better option.

thats awesome idea
Does the kitty litter actually work? Better than the expensive poo powder stuff I mean.
Probably not as well as the expensive poo powder, but it works well enough for my purposes.
Great idea except...I know for sure those legs would collapse under my weight no matter which way the legs are placed.
Some pins on each would make it rigid
A work in progress ~
What about weight - how sturdy is it?
I never tested it with a larger person. I weigh 140, and I didn't feel like that was even close to the limit.
Thanks for your response. As I weigh in the 200s, what would you recommend as reinforcement? Say for someone up yo 350??
It just doesn’t hold you up. With full body weight on it, ANY shifting causes the legs to start folding. Once that starts you’d better get off as the next movement will be to the ground onto your pile. If the legs were glued this wouldn’t happen, but that kinda defeats the purpose of being able to fold down.
Don't even really need the toilet seat. I might just make the folding PVC pipe and trash bag.
👍👍👍🏴👍🤪
what a crappy video....get it...ok bad joke! I would love to see your newest iteration.
Go to about 14:50 in this video and you'll see it: th-cam.com/video/L_cmfC3VNHU/w-d-xo.html
Kitty litter really u a cat or something
Yes
Or... Learn to squat. No gluing. 🙄
