Thanks for watching! It looks like the stool has sold out (here's an Amazon affiliate link for it: amzn.to/2RnNPhv), but any folding stool in this type of form factor can be used.
Been using this method for wild camping in the UK, only I don't use bags or kitty litter, I just dig a hole and put the stool over it and then bury the results when I'm finished. Also you could have just cut the canvas seat into 4 strips to end up with the same system as the seat belt version you made.
The second one is much better because you can use as stool and the same time use it as toilet. I love people who always find a better way to use different items and share it with others.
My take/modifications: 1) Use pine bedding pellets/shavings....More economical, better pine smell. 2) Try to separate the pee (i know I can as a male) from the poop bag by using a urinal. The pine pellet bag can be reused and last longer.
Well, as usual, you simplify an overthought need. As a new explorer nearing a senior age, this brings a freedom to adventuring. No matter camp or trail need or emergency. Thanks so much!
I just cut the fabric in half and slide it over like you do the straps. Beware of some of these collapsible ones. Mine is crappy and the legs keep sliding out whenever I try to move the stool stool around. I had to tape all the joints to provide a firmer join. I would have preferred a stool that simply folds open instead of all these joins.
Awesome idea. One thing I like is that it is sanitary and isn’t obvious what it is. Some people get grossed out at the sight of a toilet seat amongst your gear.
Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooold up, I've used exacto knives my entire life and never once in any shop or any place saw the Bic pen cap thing. Genius, pure genius.
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing. Every piece of camp/adventure kit sould have more than one use imo, and this is the first time I've seen that accomplished with a camp toilet.
That's cool! The end to your years long quest for the perfect camp toilet! I remember your prototypes. This is by far the most compact. Thank you for making it so easy. I like your seatbelt mod too. Seatbelt material might even be stronger than the material that comes on the stool. You really are inventive.
If one doesn't have access to seat belt strips, I might suggest using electrical pull tape (also called mule tape). Its weight is similar to similar lengths of parachute cord, but even the lightest stuff can bear hundreds of pounds (I think the lightest is 1000 lbs. working weight). It's flat like a ribbon, but as wide as a finger or thumb (depending on weight limit) and can be sewn together just like nylon fabric. It's my go-to cordage option for anything load-bearing, but is great for straps and the like as well! Just make sure your thread and the type of stitching used are robust enough to handle body-wight, haha. Don't want any unpleasant surprises! Edit/PS: Instead of kitty litter, use something high-carbon - wood ash, sawdust, etc. It will help reduce fecal smells. A little vinegar and water solution (roughly half & half) will do the same for urine smell.
Great minds think alike! I made a "potty chair" just like yours. I used a $4 chair (but the legs don't break down as small as yours) and some gorilla tape. Like you, I melted the edges with a lighter, then covered the edges with gorilla tape. Works great! Best $4 investment ever! So much easier to deal with than the old standby Homer bucket!
Thank you for this very helpful video. Even easier is the Texsport folding toilet, my fav. Not expensive and really perfect for its function. Unless there is some emergency I use it only for number two. For number one I use a colored sports water bottle and it’s easy to empty at any fast food restaurant, gas station, etc. no one knows what it is. But please empty it into a toilet, not into a sink.
OMGoodness! This is awesome. Between AKH and all your other resources such as this one and channels, you're a one stop shop for me, also an SUV RV'r. This is perfect for my 1 week trip to Mesa Verde National Park, my Ice Lake hike near Silverton then on to Grand Canyon's north Rim before back home to Phoenix. Thank you Tristan.
This method works great! In my own build i used a smaller camp stool from amazon. The smaller stool weighs less and fits easily into a backpack side pouch. Since i lack any sewing skills, i bought some strong velcrostraps. Wrapped them around the stool and Used zip ties to keep tension on both sides. Maybe spent 35$ on the set up and im just thrilled at the aspect of getting out there into the piney woods and doing my business with no hesitation. THANKS BUDDY
Made mine a couple weeks ago! Thrifted a super good one. Adult daughter and I just returned from a 6300 mile trip to seven NP'S. Potty worked perfect!!!! Thank you!
Excellent idea. For a guy, you could hang a bottle off of the front for a urine diverter. Keeping liquid and solid separate would keep the smell down and maybe make the bag multi use, ( as in hold several rounds). Sort of what they call a composting toilet. When hammock camping I find a small laundry detergent bottle works good if you cut out the top piece that acts like a funnel. The side handle makes it easier to hold in place. Very durable and seals well.
Great solution, so compact! And using seatbelt material is genius. Now I know what to do, and already have one of these stools to modify. Much appreciated info!
You need to patent this. Have you ever thought about using a diaper genie to "store" the bags until you get to a disposal site? Honestly, I haven't tried it yet, but I've got one for our next camping trip. Great great video
A slightly less compact alternative that leaves less/no trace is a 5 gallon bucket with a GAMMA lid, a cheap foam toilet seat (optional, for comfort), and some peat moss (optional, for composting). Regardless, it's best to urinate separately.
My first paddling trip down the Grand Canyon a bunch of us just squatted over a 30 cal ammo can. It worked well and we just tossed it at the end of the trip. Totally water and odor proof.
I use a milk crate. Stretch a kitchen garbage bag over the crate then put a normal (oblong) toilet seat over it. It is very sturdy, works great and you don't leave any waste outdoors for the next camper to find. Also, it's best if you go number 1 first before using the toilet.
I applaud your leave no trace approach. To complete you system find a 1 gallon sheetrock taping compound bucket. Some have easy screw on lids and not only would it seal up and odors better it would protect the bags form puncture and a messy clean up situation.
Exactly what I use. I also separate liquid from solid. Liquid goes in a wide necked detergent bottle and is disposed of easily. Solids are simple to store, and you can even let them start composting if you add some compostable material. Mixing the two makes a smelly effluent that will spoil your day big time if spilt...
Thinking of retirement in November! I'll be 68. I have pretty much settled on the minivan. Because it must be economical and dependable a Sienna 2021, at 36 mpg. fits just fine. It will be worth it. All other conveniences have to be essential.
Great innovation! Also, if you can somehow cut a nice circle rather than a square, theres no corners for the fabric to start tearing - like patching a tent wall. Cheers!
Thanks. I've been fretting about how I was going to do a portable toilet. Didn't like the options everyone is talking about with a bucket. I put two of those really cool stools in my cart for my next order.
If driving for days carrying wag bags, Amazon’s has odor proof bags. Get the large Bos bags. I put the wag bag in Bos bag and it does pretty good job keeping odors in. Base Camp by Outdoor System is 100% odor proof but these are expansive but reusable and biodegradable. How I know that? After hiking I got home left the bag in the garage and I forgot it for 4-5 days and no one in the family smelled anything😅
Perfect! Way better than a bucket as it takes up so little room. I like your older option even better where it can still be a stool. I wonder if one could carefully cut the new one in 4 strips that would move out of the way in a similar fashion, and then burn or tape the edges so they don't ravel and use it as both seat and potty also?
This is an awesome idea and will be a HUGE space saver for primitive camping in my 2 door Jeep Wrangler. Both stools are currently out of stock on Amazon, so I am looking for an alternative.
Check this out. I was van camping in Venice Beach and in the middle of the night I had tummy problems. So I grabbed a steel empty coffee can. I developed it further and found the best, most compatible toilet. What you need is 1 steel coffee can, 1 clear rubber hose 1 1/2 inch or so in diameter cut to the circumference of the coffee can, 2-4gallon trash bags stuff inside can, cut the hose down the middle of it's length and press down around the rim pinning the bags in place sit down and use any type bottle for number 1 front. Dispose of trash bags at any public trash can like doggy do. I used this for over ten years. No more nasty, strange public restrooms on my 50 state tour.
I remember this clever idea when I was watching your videos a while back. I really like it for camping outside the vehicle. In my SUV I don't use this because Once in a blue moon the bags do leak even with multiple ones. So I use "compactor" bags the ones for your garbage disposal those are stronger and a 2-gallon bucket with gamma seal lid.
Hmm, I might have to give this a try. I hate how much room the 5 gallon bucket takes up in my car. But I also use the bucket for transporting my litter, bags and used bags till I can find somewhere to dispose of it. So if I go to something like this I'll still need additional storage. 🤔
I have a few stools similar to these but with a flip up backrest, so I think I could make one of those work! I have lots of extra hammock tree hugger straps that I can sew on to chair. Two of my chairs came with soft lunch-pail like bags that Velcro onto the underside of the chair, so I use them to hold the bags, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and wet wipes, which I think is perfect! The fabrics match too. I’m thinking that those toilet-bowl “stool collection” inserts that you get from the Dr office should also fit on top, easing the disgust of having the bag blowing in the wind and having a potential catastrophe will work too! This should be a lot better than trying to take my portapotty on a quick trip. I also have found that if I store my soft goods, hammock/extra gear in the sky box, then I have tons of room in the lower storage space in my Honda Pilot, which I’ve set up to hold my kitchen stuff! I have an easy folding table to put my stove on and plan to cook off that, under the hatch, keeping me dry. Wish me luck, cuz it’s storming in the PNW this weekend.
If you add some horticultural lime to the kitty litter it does a good job of killing the odor. On multi-day caving trips I only used the lime and heavy duty trash bags, no stool, but I was younger and more flexible then.
WalMart. 5 gal paint bucket $3. Camping section. Lugaloo Toilet seat with lid. $11 snaps perfectly tight on the paint bucket. 8 gal bags $1. I use a little water in the bucket with some pine-sol, line 8 gal bag in bucket over the water snap lugaloo in place with lid attatched and good to go.
Yes, this a good way to dispose of the waste. However you'd need a reinforcement to the fabric so it really can support the weight of the seated person. Very good idea.
Great idea. I knew there must be a way to utilize small seats for toilets. at present I have a small bucket(likely 3 gallons) with a cheap folding chair on top so I can sit during inclement weather and remove for using the toilet.
FABULOUS! That's a terrific DIY. I really like our setup: Self Reliance folding toilet, doubling up two 8-gallon scented bags and Eco Gel packets. The toilet and supplies fit in our Trasheroo bag on the outside of the rig.
Great idea! I use a 5 gallon bucket and that takes up so much room, plus the plastic ends up soaking up the stench no matter what you use to wash it! 👎🏽 Thanks!!
Pine Sol is also useful in the bag, widely used with honey buckets in Alaskan villages (rather, was used, as most AK villages now have modern sanitation facilities), fish camps, etc.
Ok, so that’s pretty genius! As they say necessity is the mother of creativity! I feel like the only thing I might do is reinforce not only with a lighter but maybe gorilla tape or duct tape. Thanks for sharing your great idea! -Melissa
Brilliant. I had wondered if that would work. I love having my emergency camp toilet in my camp, in my tent for emergency potty runs in the middle of the night.
20 seconds in to this video I was ready to move on. The “MacGyver” in me kept me here until the end. Glad that I didn’t bail out too early. Awesome hack 👊😎...
This is a good idea! I've been thinking of using a small bucket with a lid, the advantage would be that you could put the lid on it until you can dispose of your waste. But it's not so compact and would need a pool noodle edge
And here I just go into the brush and squat and do my business like the animals. LOL ... this is better than a lot of the RV Living folks using a 5 gal bucket though. Oddly enough when I was working in north Myanmar my Burmese crew made a "seat" out of bamboo fit over a pit for my "camp toilet". Another fun video. Thanks.
Great video. I know this is an older video, but I found this and thought of you. It’s hard to find those foldable camping chairs and they still aren’t available on Amazon. This is only $17 right now from a company Racine. I believe it’s SHEIN But here it is. 1pc 3-in-1 Portable Folding Ice Bag Chair With Storage Bag And Backrest, Leisure Camping Fishing Chair, Adjustable Height, Lightweight Stool For Outdoor Camping BBQ Fishing Hiking Gardening Picnic
Perfect!! so simple easy set up. And although duct tape is usually too sticky with it's residue for camping use, I think, it would reinforce that really well for extra weight if needed.
Thanks for watching! It looks like the stool has sold out (here's an Amazon affiliate link for it: amzn.to/2RnNPhv), but any folding stool in this type of form factor can be used.
Hot glue gun on cut edges work too...
I guess you're officially an influencer! Congratulations! If I were that vendor, I'd be ecstatic.
I hate it when people do the "stoop and poop" leaving their mess and TP at a campsite (or the streets of LA or SF).
Biodegradable 8 gallon bags and beers a hint coconut fiber absorbs way more moisture and extremely quickly plus better and cheaper than kitty litter.
For more comfort add a toilet seat with 4 broom handle wall clips screwed underneath.
Been using this method for wild camping in the UK, only I don't use bags or kitty litter, I just dig a hole and put the stool over it and then bury the results when I'm finished. Also you could have just cut the canvas seat into 4 strips to end up with the same system as the seat belt version you made.
I like the uncomfortable laughs while explaining. There’s a real humility element to having these discussions. Thanks for the upload!
I really like the 4 seat belt solution. Brilliant!
That's the best option I've seen for boondocking with limited room, thanks Tristan !
The second one is much better because you can use as stool and the same time use it as toilet. I love people who always find a better way to use different items and share it with others.

Amazon sells 8 gallon biodegradable bags made from plant materials just for this purpose
Perfect 👍

8 Gallons? Holy crap!
@@sharilambeth9062 🤣🤣🤣
@@sharilambeth9062 Well,,,, let's hope the bags don't have holes in them. Well at least 1 hole.
Heat the x-acto knife to cut and seal fabric in one move.
You can also use heat to burn the edges afterwards so the threads don't unravel.
I just cut the fabric in half and slide it over like you do the straps. Beware of some of these collapsible ones. Mine is crappy and the legs keep sliding out whenever I try to move the stool stool around. I had to tape all the joints to provide a firmer join. Well, that's better than carrying around a big 5 gallon bucket. Great idea. Perfect for 'emergencies'. :D Thanks!
@Brian Landers
When possible that's good. But it's not always possible....
Plus you can get those compostable bags made out of 🌽.
Seatbealt version is better.
In the Australian outback, we have been using the same as your seat belt one for 50yrs or more, (originally it was made from leather)

if worried about the seat straps suddenly failing "under load" one could always add a wee bit of paracord to hold the fort until "relieved"

Wow, I was going to use a 5 gal. bucket. I’m so glad I saw this video. Thanks so much!
Hey, it's much better than a bucket. Especially considering we are usually short on space!
I believe it’s SHEIN
But here it is.
1pc 3-in-1 Portable Folding Ice Bag Chair With Storage Bag And Backrest, Leisure Camping Fishing Chair, Adjustable Height, Lightweight Stool For Outdoor Camping BBQ Fishing Hiking Gardening Picnic
Great idea, thanks!
Perfect!! so simple easy set up. And although duct tape is usually too sticky with it's residue for camping use, I think, it would reinforce that really well for extra weight if needed.
You can buy one just like that that has a clip on plastic toilet seat or snap on whatever you wanna call it super compact works great.
Where, please?
Very helpful, I think the seat belt strap version is great.
A good, sturdy, medium-sized mixing bowl or small bucket. Can be that simple. If sturdy, you're 'good to go.' Yep ✅
Super practical as usual. Love the super minimalist approach
Turning a camping "stool" into a potty "stool"! I like it!
Ingenius! We have the luggable loo and camp in a huge van, but I'm going to make one for canoeing!
Inventive. Hadn't seen that design before. TFS. Happy trails👍👍👍
