Wars of the Roses Battle Report - 01 (Hail Caesar Battle Report)

  • Our first game of Hail Caesar for our Wars of the Roses forces. William Hastings vs The Duke of Somerset. Small game with simple objective with additional points for units destroyed or shaken at the end of the game. A few mistakes in game, a few disorders were missed as well as a few movement rules but overall we had a great game.
Many thanks to my opponent Matt for an awesome game

I realise that this is a very late comment, but in case you haven't seen it anywhere else ... To get more "mileage" out of your casualty figures, put them on bases, and number the edges of the bases - 1,2,3,4 for a square base; 1,2,3,4,5,6 for a hexagonal base; and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 for an octagonal base. When 1 casualty is suffered, place the edge marked "1" next to the unit's base. When a second casualty is inflicted, rotate the base so that the "2" is next to the unit's base, etc.

I really like that you use casualties markers, more of a immersive battlefield.

I do prefer using them to counters, I'm currently trying to think of something I can do to show disorder however turning one base around seemed to work well
The stamina of a standard unit is 6 (I'm used to 3/4 in blackpowder) and we had 20 however my opponent had forgotten his hence we ran out. I'm going to try and do about 25/30 but I'm going to mix in some dead horses, broken shields and equipment and whatever else I can find 👍

Im working on a idea of a "disorder-marker" that will blend in on the battlefield and still easy to see that it is a disorder marker.
My question is how many disorder marker is needed during a game? 6, 12, 24, 30 more?
When I got it done I will share it with you all.

    • @7thson726

      @@NicGamz awesome
You'd potentially need one for each unit you have, in the unfortunate event your whole army suffers disorder. If you supplying for a complete game the double that. We had 8/9 units a side so 20 would have been more that enough 👍

    love your videos,
I was wondering if i might crave your momentary indulgence with a question.
I have had a 20 year break from wargaming and recently decided to get back into it. I now mostly got 400 models painted up for 15th century historical 28 mm models and built myself a rather large table to play on,
The reason i quit 2 decades ago was my issues with my suspense of disbelief. I like a good individual sense of each model like in warhammer battle, but the weirdness of some rules (for playability reasons) of many gamesets really became an issue to me as i became a re-enactor, a rider, a HEMA practitioner, and then became professionally involved by working at the Royal Armouries and the Dutch Army Museum. It just seemed to me that movements, ranges, modifiers and numbers of turns just were really off.
is there a good gameset for 200-odd models a side 15th cenury warfare simulations that you can recommend?
i know my sensibilities are a bit weird and i don't think people should necessarily agree with me on the basis of game mechanics, playability and fun.
On a sidenote, maybe i am not looking properly, but what is your background? it just seems you know what you are talking about. Is it general interest or do you have re-enactment or historical background?

Hello my friend, thank you very mich for your comment, i appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you enjoy the content. I know where you are coming from, i like rulesets whede i can easily ammend things to suit my sensibilities without breaking anything, thats why I enjoy Hail Caesar and Black Powder. They can be easily adapted and teaked to taste. Other sets include Never Mind the Billhooks and another im fond of Impetus. Impetus may be worth a check 👍
Didn't realise that came through in the videos but i have a deep seated interest in history. I'm also a practising professional archaeologist 👍😁
Hope that helps mate and hope you continue to enjoy the content

@@7thson726 i might as well feed the algorithm a little more!
yes it is very apparent you have done your homework. Do you have some good reading on the wars of the roses? (when i say good reading, i would very much like some actual contemporary chronicles, as a lot of later books are raaaather biased and filling in LARGE gaps)<
i studied archeology myself, actually, very cool to see.
I was looking at the hail ceasar rules you use and the combat seems a little abstract,
I always loved the individual feeling of the GW rules, but they massive overpowered magic and characters seem very annoying to me. (not to mention totally non-historical, obviously)
I am toying with a D20 based system of my own devising, heavily leaning on 'epic' rules from GW, with a bunch of scaling on the basis of personal experience.
I built my table at 6 m x 2 meters, so i can have (at 28mm scale) 2 bowshot distance between the armies at the start. (because bowshot is 3 meters in 28 mm scale)
I also hope to use much more differentiated modifiers in the dicerolls, as the D20s allow much more for that.
Ah well, see how i go... Trying to paint up a 100 model pikeblock atm, as that is the very smallest pikeblock i have been able to find historically. (most were 400-1000 men, but up to 5000!)
hope to help by spamming comments on the channel, take care!

Yeah this is using Hail Caesar with Army Lists from the Perry Miniatures FB page 👍 Hail caesar is also made by Warlord. To be honest i cant see why you couldnt mix them all in. The Wars of the roses start because of the end of the 100 years war so alot of kit would have been passed down. Ive mixed in a couple of earlier figures and 1/2 my casualties are from the agincourt set.
