  • Welcome back to the channel and to the first battle report in a while, the first in the new place. Today we are playing Hail Caesar using our WOTR armies however so we can test the new rules that were provided in the 2nd Edition Hail Caesar Rulebook and not any of the adaptations and house rules that we have used in the past.
    For this game we are having a straight pitched battle with 3 divisions each. VP's are awarded for units routed, Units Shaken and Commanders killed.
    Rules being used are Hail Caesar. Check out the review of the new rules here • Hail Caesar 2nd Editio...
    Intro, Scenario & Forces 0:00
    Turn 1 6:46
    Turn 2 11:20
    Turn 3 21.05
    Turn 4 36:54
    Turn 5 51:17
    Turn 6 1:11:51

    Thank you, always enjoy your battle reports, some of the best on TH-cam!. Please note at 53:50 supporting units are not permitted to shoot. "Units are not allowed to make ranged attacks if they are already engaged in hand-to-hand fighting. Note that units are considered engaged whether they are supporting or fighting..." p.40 1st edition (They also cannot be targeted for ranged attacks).

    Brilliant game. I have HC and pondered for ages whether I really need HC 2 but I took the plunge and ordered it anyway. The summary and medieval section are worth it alone I think, plus I can always lend v1 to anyone on the fence so they can have a read. I've had mixed feelings about HC for ages, in the past I've erred towards the popular tournament rules for ancient / medieval but of late I found them just a bit dull. I think all the rules are variations on a theme, being melee warfare it will always come down to dice rolls in the end, it's what precedes it that makes the game for. I'm leaning more towards HC for the command system, the simplicity (no geometry "dancing") and the fact that you can tinker with it and come up with scenarios that have some life. Your commander rules for WOTR are great, def need those I think.

    Great game.
    Apologies for being pedantic about the rules, but the Follow Me order is not new in Hail Caesar 2, it was in the first edition as well (hidden away in the section on commanders for some reason so easily missed).
    Also there was no +1 modifier for close range shooting in first edition either - the only range modifier was -1 for shooting over 12".

    Great game guys. I was the same as you that I thought there was a -1 for close shooting but as Ian says actually there wasn’t! I think MAA are a little insipid, maybe saying they had 2HW for a minus armour hit and having the armour save the same as the bill and bow was odd. Just one thing, I think when Robin’s MAA beat your archers on the hedge I think it meant that you no longer get the hedge protection but minor thing. Great stuff

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can't believe that haha, it's because of the crossover again with BP and P&S 😅 the MAA wil be staying as heavy infantry but I'll be deploying them as standard units. And B&B will go to medium infantry again. I get what they are trying to achieve but already creating the mixed formation of bill bow and MAA which is what those households are meant to represent sort of needs the need for individual units.
      You're right about the hedge, I always miss that one, oh well, just have to have another game to correct it 😁😅

    Great battle report as always and the visual aspect is always so pleasing. Not having played HC but having watched your previous videos it does seem that the modified tables for break tests really now make units hang around for much longer but just less effective if disordered and/or shaken - what are your thoughts on this? Definitely means tactically massing missile fire at a unit is maybe the way to go. Really looking forward to the next battle.

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really pleased you liked it. It definitely felt like they were on the board for longer, at the end of the game there were alot of units left 👍 massed fire on one target would definitely be an option 😁

  • @reecedignan8365
    @reecedignan8365 ปีที่แล้ว

    Grand game lads, very much semi-lived to the name bloody - still only a handful destroyed but plenty of casualty markers to boot.
    And yes definitely seems like the Neville’s had the worst of it here with some infighting even taking place - always say the worst enemy is family.
    But it’s good to see what HC 2nd Ed is like - pretty much similar to the first really - but I think your scattering of house rules and armies does make for much more interesting history and games.

    @mob257774 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this fascinating report. I am a newcomer to HC, and your channel. I think the rules capture the feel of the Wars of the Roses, when a division fails its order test, do you sense the whiff of treachery in the air?
    On a more serious note, I think you noted that the Household unit does include Men at Arms, thus increasing the save, and perhaps the reason why the Men at Arms units can only be small?

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much, there were a few mistakes in here but as a general look at the game you get the idea 😁
      I think your spot on with the MAA, and the reasoning. Personally I'll be fielding them as standard units as we never had any issues with it. It's funny, in the rules under the mixed formation but talking about this you use 4+ as the base and then add and subtract as "you" feel suits your game 🙂

    Great game gents, thank you! One question- it seems that you were re-ordering your disordered units at the end of your turn (when they had become disordered the same turn) and Roibin wasn't -? I didn't understand that mechanic, but it did seem to create an uneven balance.

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. Disorder comes off at the end of your turn unless the unit is in combat in which case it stays. We are pretty good at reminding ourselves though sometimes we miss and then remember as we're about to start combat. If I disorder Robin in my turn that unit stays disordered until the end of his next turn but if one of my units is disordered in my turn it will recover at the end of the turn unless something funny happens 👍 hope that makes sense

    How do you find the bill&bow units as opposed to having them as separate units of bill and bows?

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  ปีที่แล้ว

      It works really well for us especially with the scale of fame. The unit is more representative of all the troops a lord will bring to the battle rather than separate elements. Also archers didn't stand around once the fighting began they would also join the melee with bucklers, falchions and other weapons so we find this is the best solution to represent all of it 👍

  • @Edward-Plantagenet
    @Edward-Plantagenet 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    One other thought,
    I was wondering about adding Rhys Ap Thomas and especially Andrew Trollope to your excellent Commander Characters, have you ever considered them?
    I've also been thinking about other potential traits that could affect a whole Battle / Division e.g. such as with the the Stanleys, before they commit to battle, drop their command rating to a 7 (representing their hesitancy to declare their allegiance) and then, on the first charge their unit / battle does, up it to a 9 (representing hitting the right turning point and going all in). The Commander Traits I think add a lot of interest.

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have thought about those two, but I hadn't done anything yet as they didn't command any divisional elements at the major battles. I have them on the list for the next update though. I love your idea for the potential traits.
      I'll see if I can get the update done in January 👍😁
      Any other personalities you can think of you'd like to see?

    • @Edward-Plantagenet
      @Edward-Plantagenet 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@7thson726 I like to try and devise risk / reward type traits as well as just straight buffs or de-buffs. Things like some notably brave, but somewhat reckless, commander who CAN give his unit and extra 1 or even 2 dice on their first charge BUT at the cost of -1 to their Morale save (swinging madly in to battle but paying less attention to proper defence and posture). Another might be situational, if X is the commander on a battlefield and Y is the leader of the army X’s unit gains the Frenzied special rule (eager to prove himself and charge at the earliest opportunity, whether or not it’s a good idea). Hard to keep these impetuous units under control! DeVere also, raise his command by +1 or even +2 when trying to rally his own unit (in light of his actions at Barnet). I really like Traits that reflect something that the leader supposedly did in a battle or was renowned for generally.
      I do like the Blown Horses amendment too where they fight at Sustained if they charge again. For the Mounted MAA though, heavier armour and bigger horses, I’d probably use the Napoleonic version (from Clash of Eagles IIRC) for Heavy Cavalry where once they have charged they must wait one full turn before they can charge again, representing them gaining their composure again.
      Commanders wise, I thought Trollope was very highly regarded. Commanded part of the army at Ludford Bridge but then defected. he devised the plan for Wakefield apparently and shared command of the Vanguard with Percy at Townton. Edward IV apparently put a Contract out on him. (Trait maybe? If Edward is the army commander, +1 VP to any unit that destroys the Trollope unit but +1 VP to the Trollope unit if nobody does). I think some of these traits are great ways to personalise some of the hatreds these people had for each other.
      Rhys Ap Thomas I thought was leading Henry’s forces at Bosworth at the start and it was, in some accounts, he that actually struck the killing blow to Richard. He also put down the Yorkists at Brecon AFAIK. Later betrayed by another scummy Tudor, Henry VIII, despite having helped establish them. Never been a fan of the Tudors!

      Can't really think of any notable commanders you haven't covered already, apart from maybe a couple of 'one battle wonders'. This turned out to be a long one! Should have mailed you LOL. 😃
