Hi Delboy - if you have rust on chrome, dip a lightly screwed up piece of silver foil in coca cola and splash a bit on the chrome as well, give it a gentle rub, bingo all clean and shiny and because of the soft density of the foil it does not scratch. Really good for wheel rims, handlebars anywhere there's chrome. Thanks for the video on the Bleach, all these tips are handy Thanks.
Been using this on my headers for a while now. Can’t add pictures in the comments, otherwise I could show you a before and after. The difference is amazing. Follow it up with some autosol polish and headers look like new. Just did mine again a couple of days ago. For really stubborn areas, I use a washing up sponge with the scotch brite pad on the back. Pisses the wife off as I take the used one from the kitchen so it’s not too abrasive lol.
Been using acid for years it does work awsome but leaves corrosive residue if you dont rinse it really well use baking soda mixed with water to wash it the first time then wash it with clean soapy water the baking soda helps neutralize the acid
Yes indeed Del, I have used this for a couple of years now purely for rust removal ever since I was no longer able to buy the acid on its own. I’m restoring a zzr 1100 with a badly rusted rear brake disc and various brackets and I can’t wait to drop them all in overnight to get them prepped for repainting.
I commute on my tiger 800 so you can imagine how scrappy my pipes look. But spent an hour over weekend and I have shiny pipes for Monday morning. Top tip!
I've used this before and it works a treat. Problem I found was the cleaned item rusts quicker after being cleaned. Even my pliers or spanners that touched the stuff corroded badly afterwards. I did spokes that were ready for the bin and they came up like new until they hit moisture then rusted very fast. Worth doing a test first. Loving the videos as just bought a 91 Goldwing so very helpful.
This product should really only be used on good quality stainless steel, it will rust iron the moment oxygen gets to it.. maybe less so if you oiled the parts after cleaning !!
Definitely did a great job of this video. I've seen a guy saying it's not a good idea but I've used this stuff on two bikes I've owned and like you said, rinse it off well with soapy water. It works a treat 👍👌
I used this last year around early march on my down pipes and it worked a treat. I did the same thing again during the summer and the sun dried the product before I could wash it off causing the pipes to be discoloured and dull almost like it has taken the shine out of the metal/chrome. Be careful guys!
I've used this stuff very successfully on various rusty exhausts, and is particularly good on baked on mud and cow shit on my dirt bike downpipes. Ironically however, it left black staining on my bathroom taps! Keep it well away from aluminium and chrome plating!!!
I have seen a few examples of this being used before but I have always been a bit sceptical, seeing you do some testing has set my mind to rest but I'm so glad you reminded people to make sure that they wash it off afterwards, 9% hydrochloric acid can do some serious damage. Another great practical piece of advice. Cheers Dell.
good video Del. I liked the way you protected the rest of the bike before going any where near it with Harpic, very professional. It looks like the Harley downpipe may have been chromed hence it did not have the same effect. Ultimately it will take the chrome off and reveal the stainless underneath and I think that may have happened here. Long on the short dont use Harpic on anything that has been chromed,
We use this to remove the chrome coating from the plastic kit parts you find in the model making hobby like the bike kits that Tamiya make so that we can respray them for a more authentic look. Great work Del, love the videos mate they're brilliant. 😉👍❤
Hey buddy, that's a great tip..never been a lover of chrome on metal, but chrome on plastic is just horrible, so a great option and I will remember that, thank you Sir!
Richard don't the autosol make ur pipes gold as soon as they heat up? I do it other way round, Polish, get them gold, then harpic, buff up with a clean rag
ibz6969 it's always been a problem no matter how hard I buff the polish off no matter how beautifully polished I get them within minutes they're gold, my mate told me to try it, did it on unpolished pipes and they stayed silver, tried it my way once and for the first time I managed to retain polished silver pipes for at least a fortnight, bloody good stuff ay, works well in the toilet too, guarantee u could make a killing repackaging and selling this
I wish they sold that here! Down here in south Louisiana when we have a problem with rust, we use ammonium nitrate mixed with a proper amount of diesel fuel and the rust simply blows right off.
You can use toilet bowl cleaner that states limescale remover , it’s hydrochloric acid based rather than bleach based, my mate lives in Ohio , I’ll. ask him which one he used , as it worked for him
Thanks Del for the advise. That was pretty cool stuff. Years ago when I had a 69 VW Bug and it got some rust on the bumper I used SOS pads. It worked really good. Have a nice and shiny day Del and Pen. Thank you.
We've been amazed at all the hacks people are sharing, it seems it's pretty common practice to use household products on your bike and bike gear and cars... have a shiny day too! D&Px
Old school tricks, been using it for years however.. on mild steel be very careful of area location and weather climate.. flash rust or untreated after cleaning will rust quicker.. but hey technicality vs. this awesome cleaning trick
Good move mate, but as always, make sure you wash it off 2-3 times really thoroughly as it keeps acting on the metal if you leave it there, even just a residue is enough to burn it!
only recently came across this hack so tried it on a old exhaust system laying in the garage off a restoration in doing, couldn't get exactly the same mine was harpic with limescale remover. the can and the collector came up very well the headers are only steel not chrome so looked terrible and rusty all the way down to the joints gave them two goings over with a rinse in between, second time i used wire wool gently around and all over the pipes and they came up very well it also cleaned up the clamps a treat total time spent about two hours ended up very satisfied with a bucket of very dirty water recommend doing it out doors power full fumes up close.
I was googling the ingredients, when you mentioned it has hydrocloric acid, good job. I might even want to throw away the scotch pad, if it were mine, just for safety. Thanks for the great tip!
Cheers buddy, from the comments here, I'm learning that if you just leave it on for maybe 20mins then you don't need to scuff it at all, it'll come right up ready for polish!
The issue I had after using a caustic to remove rust was it needed to be resealed to prevent later oxidations. Let us know if you had rust return after this.
on some of the videos about the harpic, they recommend washing it off when you get the result you want,as the acid carries on working. another channel used milk after instead of putting water on the pipes as its alkiline and deactivates the acid..going to give this a go on my scoot exhaust..
Don't use brake clean on pieces of metal you are about to weld. The chemical in the brake cleaner is Tetrachloroethylene. When this chemical is exposed with excessive heat and argon (used in MIG and TIG welding) it also produces phosgene which is extremely poisonous that will lead to organ damage or even death. Acetone is recommended to clean metal before welding, but never, ever brake cleaners.
Thats great. I put new stainless steel pipes on my fazer a while ago, but with a fibreglass exhaust wrap; should I remove the wrap? then clean the pipes underneath? the wrap is pretty dirty, how do you clean the wrapping? cheers
You can gently scrub the exhaust wrap with a nail brush and soapy water to get the dirt out, rince it clean with clean warm water... but it is known that after a while pipes will start to corrode under the wrap as it harbors the damp more then when they are in fresh air.. so if you're worried, strip the wrap, clean the pieps and replace it with new wrap maybe..?
I clean my bandit pipes with it but always wash it after with water and dry. Always found rubbing with wire wool works great aswell but lightly rubbing
Hi , I 've used this product before and it works well , but since it 's acidic , then you have to treat the metal with an alkaline solution of bicarbonate of soda and then anti - rust , now you can also clean it with cotton wool .brand duraglit , its amazing
I got a tiny bit on my chrome engine bars and it took the chrome off be careful? It's good on the exhaust and downpipes? Brillo pads and Autosol are safer to use?
Looks great. Bought a '05 Softail Springer that had blue chrome. 'Blue Job' did wonders in removing that. Always great to find products that actually work.
Great vid and will try later on my Triumph. Tip in return, don’t keep adjusting your safety glasses with Harpic covered gloves, you’ll get that stuff in your eyes 🤯
Sure thing buddy, I'm gonna have another crack at my Harley pipes, as it wouldn't touch the staining by itself, as you saw, I had to hit them with a Scothbrite too, am gonna take up suggestions of some of the guys here to let it soak for 20mins and see if that helps it float the dirt off... otherwise, it's back to the Scotchbrite aye!
Hydrochloric acid or any bleaches (eg sodium hypochlorite or any chlorine) will actually cause metal to corrode so DO NOT let it soak. Thoroughly wash it off if you use this stuff. Personally I just go straight for the metal polish (autosol).
Great info del saves a lot of hard work I drive a 2019 zzr14 all year long I took the headers and link pipes off today was very surprised 😮 they were awfully bad Probably the wet conditions over the winter thanks for the post anyhow very helpful pal
Yeah, winter can take it's toll on your metal work, am sure you've got some plans, if you're not replacing those pipes, there are some great ceramic coatings that can arrest their condition and keep them from getting any worse... good luck with it and thanks for your support.
if I had seen this video before I would not have scratched my chrome line from my T100. Do you have an idea to be able to remove these scratches and find a mirror appearance? Thanks ✌
@@Moonfleet41 the former owner of the motorcycle had installed thermal bands. I removed the tape marks with wd40 + scotchbrite and iron straw 0000 + belgom chrome to regain shine. these thermal bands are terrible and leave nasty marks on the collectors
Hahaha the harpic, me and my mate joke about this, every time I do my pipes, compound and mop, autosol, Polish, heat up engine and get the pipes gold (all the polish that didn't buff out) then the magic, harpic with a rag, silver again, wash off the harpic or it'll stain, heat them up again, no gold, no gold for weeks!!!!! The stuff is amazing, got rid of rust on my front discs too, watch it on the actual disc though as it turns the metal pink. Delboy ur a legend mate! Harpic ftw!!
Sorry mate, I'm a little confused, I made this video 4yrs ago and I've been using this trick in some form for 20yrs... I see by looking at your Channel, that your posted video was 2yrs ago, are you suggesting that in some way I copied you mate? Not sure if I've got that right, but either way mate, it is pretty common knowledge these days, I think you'll agree!
Sure thing mate, I thought so! ...Just caught your seat foam cut down video and I'm just about to do the umpteenth one for a project, next time you're shaping foam, give a sander a try... you want a coarse sanding disc, say 40 grit or something, and just gently stroke away the foam and it leaves almost a perfect factory finish if you're careful... ride safe mate.
Hi Del & Penny. I'm in lockdown just like everyone else and came across a "simple skill" which may interest you. I'm using this comment option because I don't know how else to send you the details. The subject is "Ball Turning with a Boring Head" (may not be what you're thinking). :-) The utube channel owner is Ade Swash. Stay Safe Regards from S Africa Clive
Hi Clive, thanks for the link mate, much appreciated, I'll give the video a watch as soon as I get a moment! Hope you're staying safe there, strange times indeed, keep well, all the very best, D&Px
I removed melted on plastic from my Harley's chrome pipes using OVEN CLEANER not that cheap stuff or Mr Muscle but the sort that requires rubber gloves, eye protection etc. I put it on using a toothbrush and it took about three hours with four of five applications. The pipes were contaminated when my high vis waterproof trousers melted on them.
Thanks for that tip buddy, I've heard a few people say that works for pillion boot prints that burn on the downpipes as well! ... great to hve this shared advice, thanks buddy!
Can I use this on the inner heat shields on my vance hines. Their rusty inside but outer chrome is good. If I tape up and protect the outer chrome? ?? Thanks
I wouldn't if they were mine mate, if they are chrome on the outside, then however crappy it might look, the plating will be on the inside too, so you will probably strip it off altogether and make it rust even faster down the line... if it was mine, on the inside I'd sand them back and paint them with silver heatproof paint...
You have saved me a lot of greef, I'm in the middle of trying to remove 20 years of crud of the spokes, time consuming. Just wonder if it would attack my white walls if dripped on
I have just been given a 1986 vfr750 Honda that's been in a garage for 21 years, it's really dirty, rusty, stiff and starchy, I'm going to try this stuff on some of that.
I seen it when I watched a video comparing it to a £25 exhaust cleaner and for a £2 bottle of harpic it took my 11 year old cbf600 exhaust and made it look brand new! All the winters of corrosion eaten away in seconds, why you would pay more for a dedicated cleaner is bonkers so yeah its absolutely amazing stuff!!
I know, crazy aye?! I hate to use the word scam, because every company deserves the chance to run a business, but they should be reasonable, and these products we seem to get charged so much for can be outrageous, I once saw a bottle of Harley Davidson denim paint cleaner for £10.50 for 500ml, the active ingredients were the same as Mr Sheen furniture polish, £1.25 in the supermarket, and same results.. and it smells nice too lol
I know this is an old video, but I want to clean up a Triumph Street Scrambler OEM header and leave the original satin bronze finish intact. Will Harpic work? Does anyone know if there is a comparable product in the US? I used Blue Away for chrome pipes in the past. Thanks.
Did you use brake cleaner to remove bleach residue on the exhaust, and were you using a hand held water spray to remove the bleach from the screws in the tray?. Is there a recommended thing to do to the metal after using the bleach?
You're right, on rust, White vinegar is king.. but in dark tarnished stainless, it seems to have little effect, and thats what this test was really about..!
I'm doing several of my own old bikes with crusty and rusty petrol tanks in both alloy and steel respectively. I'd like to know if you would or could restore either of these types of metal tanks back to bare metal using this stuff with no liner and a best/cheapest/easiest method as to - How you would approach drying and stop the flash rusting of the steel after washing this stuff out with water.
This was just an experiment mate, I'm not an authority on it, but I wouldn't wash a petrol tank out with this.... I've found that it seems to promote rust on ferrous metals very quickly indeed, but on stainless steel it cleans it nicely, as long as you wash it off straight away... I would never use it on a steel petrol tank as it's horribly corrosive and any residue left inside will rot it's way through eventually... I'd stick with the old fashioned method of fistful of ball bearings in the tank with a pint of water and shake it to bits for half hour to beat all the rust flakes off the inside, then wash it all out, air dry it thoroughly, then apply some PetSeal coating to the inside to stabilise what oxidisation is inside.
@@Moonfleet41 yeah I've been experimenting too. I've recently tried 10 litres of 'Cleaning' vinegar (AUD$13) in a badly rusted but good unholed tank for a few days, it stripped it out perfect then mixed Metal Cleen in with the water to flush which seemed to stall the flash rusting completely. Tried it with another good tank for the same few days that had mostly light and some heavier surface rust but flushed with only water to see how long it took to flash rust and within the drying time, it looked worse than before. My next experiment will be using a vapour blasting medium that you use to wash parts that have just been vapour blasted - BlastX 108 X2 Double Strength Concentrate Flash Rust Inhibitor - and when mixed at 200:1 with water is said to leave no residue. I will never use any liner mix again as they all separate eventually, then break down and from personal experience and a destroyed engine, you know 'Once Bitten'. There are so many dubious fixes in this area, it'd be nice to see 'you' address this issue properly and after watching a few of your videos, I believe you could do it justice.
I'd be really careful using it on brakes, if you have alloy carriers it will burn the anodizing off them, and if you spill any on the wheels it could damage the paint or the rubber on your tyres... I won't be using it anywhere near my brakes, it's just not worth the risk...as you saw when I did my pipe, I covered everything with plastic, including the bench lift.
All the videos I’ve seen using the same product generally leave it for 4 to 5 minutes and wash off with water and I’ve seen great results and got some great results myself 👍🏻
Great video del & penny. Bet penny got you cleaning the loo now. I will get same from sainsburys tomorrow. Then in to the garage to work on the bandit exhaust system. See you in the next video mate. Best wishes to you and penny
Cheers James, I am reading and hearing lots from the Bandit community and as I remember on my own Bandit 12, the pipes are particularly bad for going brown and tarnished, specially around the collector under the motor... here a lot of advice to leave it on for about 20mins, and then buff up with Autosol for a shiny finish!
I have aMoto Guzzi Breva 750 with chrome-plated (not stainless steel) exhaust pipes. Does this thing work on chrome? How long does the effect last? Should we apply some sort of metal protection afterwards?
I use this method to, even none stainless steel headers look better after harpic BUT I found you need to give em a good polish with autosol afterwards 👍
I saw a video on this quite a while ago, so many people in the comments said it damages the metal. Maybe a myth busting video would be fun, leave some on for a week, a few days and 24 hours, measure the thickness before and after, maybe keep one piece and apply more and keep coming back to it at the start of other vids as an update and re-apply, rinse repeat and all that :)
I think something this caustic will always damage the metal if you leave it on long term, it even says on the bottle that it can damage some metals, probably meaning aluminium or chrome finish as hydrochloric acid is a great way to strip anodizing off aluminium and I've used it for that reason when I've wanted to polish it... but might be an idea for a longer experiment!
like the music for sure. i had a difficult time finding this stuff in the US so i just went with autosol and a wool fuzzy 3" pad for my drill and it turned a brown nasty header pipe on my suzuki dl1000 into a shiny polished stainless. holding til this day a year later.
Tried this today on my 20 year old headers on my Thundercat and cannot believe the transformation. They look brand new ☺
Hi Delboy - if you have rust on chrome, dip a lightly screwed up piece of silver foil in coca cola and splash a bit on the chrome as well, give it a gentle rub, bingo all clean and shiny and because of the soft density of the foil it does not scratch. Really good for wheel rims, handlebars anywhere there's chrome. Thanks for the video on the Bleach, all these tips are handy Thanks.

Nice Del, would you use this for plastic chrome pieces like on my goldwing fender trim?
It’ll stop the chrome finish right off.
Hydrochloric acid or any bleaches (eg sodium hypochlorite or any chlorine) will actually cause metal to corrode so DO NOT let it soak. Thoroughly wash it off if you use this stuff. Personally I just go straight for the metal polish (autosol).
This works - I’ve been using this method for quite a long time. Following up with Solvol improves the final finish also.
Using harpic you must be clean round the bend.
Thank you for this tutorial, I like this idea how to clean stainless steel, but is that going to clean chrome ?
NO, you must not use it on Chrome, the acid will burn it and make permanent damage.. it will only work like this on Stainless steel. !
Best thing to do Del is paint it on and leave for 5/10 minutes - cleaned my entire bandit system up a treat!
Thanks Tommy.. great advice, still have to do my Harley pipes properly..
if I had seen this video before I would not have scratched my chrome line from my T100. Do you have an idea to be able to remove these scratches and find a mirror appearance?
Thanks ✌
Sorry my friend, can you explain what you mean by 'chrome line'?
@@Moonfleet41 exhaust manifolds
@@Moonfleet41 the former owner of the motorcycle had installed thermal bands. I removed the tape marks with wd40 + scotchbrite and iron straw 0000 + belgom chrome to regain shine. these thermal bands are terrible and leave nasty marks on the collectors
That’s what I’m talking about, boom! & the tarnish is no more. Wow
Truckers have been using Cillit BANG! product for years for cleaning polished alloy tanks etc. As mentioned already, rinse off quickly.
Thanks mate, it's crazy ain't it... who would have thought that kitchen drain cleaner would work so well!
I was thinking, that'll work on my 20yr old fazer headers and then you said it yourself. I'll be giving that a go 👌
Cheers Matty... we want photos, before and after aye..! Good luck chap..
And I´ve been seing your videos too for a long time. Very goog mechanic. Congrats
Heard about this stuff but not seen it in action. Now I have seen what it can do I might get some now. Thanks Del.
Nice tip Del. Got to get me some of that. Penny and you have a great week . Cheers
Thanks buddy, have a great week yourself! D&Px
You can thank me for creating the video a few years ago using Harpic another time 👍🏻
Sorry mate, I'm a little confused, I made this video 4yrs ago and I've been using this trick in some form for 20yrs... I see by looking at your Channel, that your posted video was 2yrs ago, are you suggesting that in some way I copied you mate? Not sure if I've got that right, but either way mate, it is pretty common knowledge these days, I think you'll agree!
@@Moonfleet41 only joking buddy 😂👍🏻
Sure thing mate, I thought so! ...Just caught your seat foam cut down video and I'm just about to do the umpteenth one for a project, next time you're shaping foam, give a sander a try... you want a coarse sanding disc, say 40 grit or something, and just gently stroke away the foam and it leaves almost a perfect factory finish if you're careful... ride safe mate.
@@Moonfleet41 great idea thanks, will probably remove cover and do that 👍🏻
Well you learn something new every day 👍👍
Cool Simple Skills video, and great to see Pen back at camera! Have a shiny day!! 😎👍
Thanks Byron, glad you enjoyed... was a fun video to make!
Hi Del & Penny.
I'm in lockdown just like everyone else and came across a "simple skill" which may interest you.
I'm using this comment option because I don't know how else to send you the details.
The subject is "Ball Turning with a Boring Head" (may not be what you're thinking). :-)
The utube channel owner is Ade Swash.

Hi Clive, thanks for the link mate, much appreciated, I'll give the video a watch as soon as I get a moment! Hope you're staying safe there, strange times indeed, keep well, all the very best, D&Px
that's just made it so much easier for a lot of folk !!
Sure thing Tom.. and that includes me mate.. i hadn't heard of it before,, but im never gonna be without a bottle from now on.. awesome result.
Cool tip Del. I had used a polish called Blue Job before on a Honda Magna I had years ago but it was bloody pricey and all you got was a tiny tub.
Too right mate, don't they always like to charge of the 'specialist polishes' and this works just as well for £1.75 for a litre!
Moonfleet41 okay, sound's a good idea.
Thanks very much for your help.
Cheers for this, Del.
I'm off to the CoOp before it shuts. That stuff is definitely worth a try. 👍
Sure is Keith, best £1.75 you'll ever spend!
On offer at Morrisons, £1 for a 750ml bottle, same price at b&m aswell
I know this is an old video, but I want to clean up a Triumph Street Scrambler OEM header and leave the original satin bronze finish intact. Will Harpic work? Does anyone know if there is a comparable product in the US? I used Blue Away for chrome pipes in the past. Thanks.
Did you use brake cleaner to remove bleach residue on the exhaust, and were you using a hand held water spray to remove the bleach from the screws in the tray?. Is there a recommended thing to do to the metal after using the bleach?
OH IT WORKS, FANTASTIC and the price per bottle is now £10 each lol
Yeah, look out for Muc Off Power Plus on the shelves very soon..lol
Vinegar is cheaper, rinses off the surface rust of the sheets just as well....you just need more patience (-;
You're right, on rust, White vinegar is king.. but in dark tarnished stainless, it seems to have little effect, and thats what this test was really about..!
Thanks del for the advice. Put in on leave for 20 minutes the buffers off .
That is impressive! I'll have to get a bottle and try it on my stainless brake discs to see if it removes corrosion etc
I'd be really careful using it on brakes, if you have alloy carriers it will burn the anodizing off them, and if you spill any on the wheels it could damage the paint or the rubber on your tyres... I won't be using it anywhere near my brakes, it's just not worth the risk...as you saw when I did my pipe, I covered everything with plastic, including the bench lift.
how long will the exhaust stay this clean ?
That's unbelievable results for little effort ..that's definitely a top tip. .cheers del 😊
I have aMoto Guzzi Breva 750 with chrome-plated (not stainless steel) exhaust pipes. Does this thing work on chrome? How long does the effect last? Should we apply some sort of metal protection afterwards?
DON'T use it on chrome mate, it'll permanently damage it..
Thanks for the answer. What is a good method for restoring chrome exhausts?
Thanks for the tip Del .👍👍🏍
Try sisal wheels with black then pink polishing compound. Difficult unless you can get to all parts = remove
Granny isn't going to be happy about her roasting tin. Wow what a find. I'm going to have to give Harpic a try. Thx.
I Use It for a long time ago. It makes magic !!
