I only spend 45$ on Star Citizen and I have a great time playing it. Start delivering some packages, do some bounty, get some money to rent an ROC and Cutlass Black to go, Minning, save enough money to Get a Prospector, Get in touch with Mining Org. Sell player Quntanium location, Save money Enough to buy a Harbinger, Do VHRT Bounty, Visit Invictus Expo, and get to fly 890 Jump with 10 strangers who I just met in the Expo.
It has a lot of issues, game-breaking bugs sometimes and the whole paying real-world money for in-game ship Insurance is weird but I say I've had fun with it for the whole 1-2 months, and For 45$ which is less for some AAA games that I far less enjoy playing. With all this I do hope It got released and everyone got to have the experience like I have

The seamless traversal keeps me grounded and immersed in the game world as I go from place to place to do different contracts. Part of CitCon 2024 was addressing the *motivation* of players to play the game, and talking about giving players more goals and more reasons to do things, so I'm happy for that.

Star Citizen is a game I enjoyed playing nonstop for 6 months. Gets stale after awhile but its a game i come back periodically. Its crazy the amount of shit you can interact with and how space travel feels so great. Downside is its graphically intesive so you need a decent pc. Their update last year though helped give people more frames with their new tech which i cant remember the name. It loads persistent item systematically and uses the engine to generate. Hey I just want to clear up a few things about wipes, SC does NOT have regular/frequent FULL database wipes any more. However, there ARE partial data wipes, but rarely do they include in game purchased ships, weapons, armor, components, etc (things that are expensive). Back in the pre 3.0 days, SC had frequent full wipes because there was no way for the game data to persist between updates. The last full wipe was for 3.18 because it introduced full persistence which was a complete overhaul of their backend database, they prefer for player data to persist now between updates as it is important data for them to have on player activity.
If there is a need to reset some of the player account data, CIG will let players know in advance what will be affected. Most recently we had a reputation resent because they overhauled the reputation system, and the new and old systems had completely different styles of progression.
In extreme cases CIG has the ability to select what player data they want to reset i.e. Money, Items, Reputation, etc either game wide or on an account by account bases. For example, there have been a few money exploits recently where players were duping resources and making millions within an hour, CIG was able to ban the most egregious offenders and reset the money balance for others they knew were exploiting as well as remove anything they purchased in game using the exploits. Those of us who did not use the exploits were unaffected by the resets.
I have several ships that I purchased in game about a year ago that have persisted. Several I purchased just because I knew a money wipe was coming the following patch, but I also wanted to test if there persistence tech was working as advertised. Since then I've had one ship that was accidentally wiped but was able to get it back after I alerted customer service. that was over 6 months ago now and I have not had any issues since.

      @jameshanna8762 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yeah the wipes are only a thing during development. Once the game goes live, and we are no longer playing in Alpha, the credits and ships you grind will persist. Anyone playing the Alpha version will have to acknowledge the fact that they know they are helping provide data for the devs, and the database is subject to partial or complete wipes. None of the items/credits acquired through gameplay, prior to official release, should be expected to carry over to the final release version. I fully expect everything to get one final total wipe right before the official release of the final product.
As for paying to excel, buying a bigger ship doesn't really do anyone any good, unless they can crew the ship. Take the Carrack, as an example. Sure, a single player can fly the ship around, but while they are flying, they can't do anything else, including firing any of the guns. You are just a big defenseless target without a sizable crew manning the ship. All they really accomplished was to help fund the game development for everyone.

Yes it gives you the advantage to have the ship righ away, but it will not make sense to us them on day one, due to the high (ingame) cost to run them. Also the part which will bring you further in the game, is reputation, which can't be bought and is the same for every player. What CIG said about SQ42 in 2023 was *not* "content complete". And it is *exactly* because of people passing along mistakes like this that others end up feeling ripped off, lied to, betrayed.
CIG said *"FEATURE COMPLETE"* which is an entirely different thing. It means, in game development, that the framework or the product, thee game engine has all of the features they have planned for it to need. Everything from ho systems work, the physics of objects, how materials look under differing conditions, etc. It is a *huge* and *exhaustive* list, usually being 60-80% of the total effort needed on a project, depending on how much effort the next phase is given: Content and Polish cycles.
Content is the entirety of any storylines, missions, places etc that make up what most of us think of as the game. It is also what most "story DLC" is composed of. It is not a short effort or time thing if done well.
Polish is what fixes bugs. Smooths out performance. Finds those "rarely repeatable" issues that screws over a player who paid full price and now cannot play. It is optimization, and making sure that as many systems and all of their varied configurations can get the most out of hat they have.
So telling your viewers that this "is much more in line with CIG's modus operandi" and that a delay between Feature Complete and then release day is a source of frustration they deserve. The fact that you didn't know what Feature Complete actually is (they tried to tell people but no one wants to hear that so they don't) says a *lot* about how ignorant people are in regards to this industry. This is the same as with *every* game out there. And rushing this phase to make ignorant people happy is *exactly* what happened to Cyberpunk.
Companies are not responsible for your willful ignorance.
CIG has definitely made mistakes. Many of those have been in communication with its backers. And one big one has been in pushing the scope so far without ever drawing the line of "this point will be feature complete" and communicating that, because they (Chris) wanted that line further along. If they *had* drawn the line, might have end up with another Elite Dangerous, or No Man's Sky.
However they did press on, so the point is now moot. What matters now is far simpler; they *have* drawn that "Feature Complete" line in the sand. We now know what will be in 1.0 of Star Citizen, and anything else will be in future expansions (as all MMOs have).
They won't need a beta test; the PU still running will be that.
As to things like insurance and paying real money to get things in game, I point out something to consider: Ships (and gear) bought via pledge are essentially thee baseline/starter version of that product. They are *certainly* not the version of the ship you will *want* to have, because the highest quality ships, components, and gear will all be *crafted* at higher tiers. It is entirely possible that you might get easy access to generating a schematic by owning it from real money... but that doesn't provide the rest of it.
The player with their single $45 ship will be able to earn all the things that matter inside the game as well as someone who has purchased things. The shortcut of buying them with real money will be a faster start perhaps when the game launches, but less so as the game progresses and the player crafted items become more available for purchase in game. They have already said they are far less likely to do wipes of any kind beyond consumables going forward, and they haven't yet, though there was a time when they would have for 3.24. Already the model is changing. I've had my c2 for almost a year now, bought in-game.
Do *you* want a tier 1 version of the ship that you paid real money for, or a tier 3 chassis with all custom tier 3 loadouts and components that make your ship actually impressive? That give you an edge? That has higher armour value, or lower power draw, or slightly better thrust, or is lighter and handles atmosphere under cargo load better?
*THAT* is the grind. The reputation to get the schematics. To find out where to mine the rare mats to make the rare gear that helps mine the rare mats... do you really understand so little about how MMOs work? Or are you looking to get TH-cam clicks and advertising through *Outrage(tm)* to make your OWN money, like so many other content creators. And yes, I am referring to those like Gem Reviews. I believe you are better than that.
I think, like most MMOs these days, the big real money expenditure will be in *style.* Different clothes, suits, armour, liveries etc. will end up filling their pledge stores. Once people understand how much less useful pledging a ship is fewer will be.
So lets show a bit of integrity and spread *accurate* information.

I'm an SC outsider, so I don't know any of the details of the economy and how it presently works. I still think the basic premise of the economic concerns Luke raises holds. Some people have spent 1000s of real world dollars on the game, and if in the finalized economy this expenditure doesn't result in some significant in-game progression, then everyone who bought anything is going to be pissed. If a luxury tier 1 ship only takes 5% the amount of grinding as going from nothing to the tier 3 version of that ship, then those players who bought the ship will basically have wasted their money. They will have been thrown under the bus, and new players will not be motivated to buy ships. If, on the other hand, those expenditures do pay off then it makes the game less fun for everyone else, because the whole point is that everyone is co-existing in the same in-game economy.

Nope, that prologue for the game was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to play the full version of the single-player game whenever it releases. It is top tier amazing. Really impressed. I only play single player games.

I've played 1200+ hours of Star Citizen (alpha) in the past year. I signed up in 2015 but it wasn't remotely playable then. After 1000+ hours in Starfield, I found it wanting. I didn't want to go back to EVE so I gave SC another try. I can honestly say that - even in its current state - it is a better game than many so-called AAA releases in the past decade. The sheer scope and beauty alone is impressive. The freedom to climb into a cool spaceship, fly above a planet's surface (the entire surface), fly into orbit and view the planet you just came from, then off into space with no loading screens is amazing. No other game I've played (and I've played a LOT of games in the past 35 years) comes close to the immersion. When it works.
Right now, it is buggy and rough. I personally would rather they polished the features and ships they currently have in--game rather than keep promising "new and exciting" features and ships that are obviously going to be years away. Is Star Citizen 1.0 a pipe-dream? Maybe. Is it worth trying - even for $45 in alpha? Yes. While I've dropped a few hundred bucks for new ships, I did so because I wanted to not because it is necessary. Is the game tied to a giant marketing campaign to entice players to constantly buy new and more exciting content. Absolutely. $700 Million+ and counting, the campaign is working. Are the devs (and Chris Roberts) committed to seeing the "grand vision" of the game to fruition? I think they are. It might be another decade, though, and I hope I'm still around to enjoy it.

But ED forced its players to by expansions of promised content. Content yet to be seen that was promised 12 years ago.
Of the two projects, SC is the biggest scam of the gaming industry!?! I guess "released" gives immunity from such criticism.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
I too worked 70 hours a week, and made good money. So I applied that money to my hobbies and interests. SC being one of them for the same reason you did.
I did however recently retire unplanned, and now find myself struggling for a goal to reach in game. So do be careful. One day you may not be working as much.
Hooray for base and station building. New goal set to do, just because I can.
The really good fighter pilots will honestly tell you, skill wins in a ship almost every time. Like you, I get wrecked a lot in ships so many claim to be good. And often by much smaller and less formidable ships. So those pilots say knowledge and practice practice. But practice takes time, and I really don't like combat gameplay in most games. So I don't like practice. Thankfully I can spend hours even days in game and never have to fire a single shot. I have friends who gladly prevent or avenge my demise.
That fomo is real isn't it.

They said they were feature complete. NOT content complete. In game development, feature complete means that all the core systems & mechanics needed for the game to function are implemented. For Squadron 42 (SQ42), this would include things like flight mechanics, AI behaviors, and core combat systems.
Content complete, on the other hand, means all the assets and content like levels, story missions, voice acting, and visual details are fully integrated & polished. Big difference.

  • @staticneuron
    @staticneuron วันที่ผ่านมา +18

So much about this information always leaves me scratching my head about how much research goes into the subject before talking about it. Since so many brought up the issue with feature complete I would like to point out a couple of persistent misunderstandings surrounding SC.
    1. SHIPS ARE NOT PROGRESSION!!!
CIG has stated it before and they stated it again during Citcon. They consider reputation to be progression. That will allow you to get more credits to play sandbox how ever you want. The ships simply open up avenues to play, but larger ships are not "better" for you. They have cost associated with them to run. The most expensive ships in game take larger crews to run. If you are a Solo player, or if you play with one or two friends, you don't even "need" to get a larger ship that supports this. Also the server wipes are not intentional but related to tech. The plan for 1.0 as you implied you watched it, is to have insurance (recieve credits back) plans for ships you purchased in game and warranty (hull replacement) you can earn.
    2. Monetization
The desire to stop selling ships outside of starter ships and concepts, is Chris Roberts idea. And it is unlikely that is going to change. What can the sell other than ships though? EVERYTHING ELSE! Already in the store you can by in-game weapons, armor, paints, decoration, and flair. They tested a system in which you can have paid customization for ships (test run done with 300 series). They have not expanded it to every ship but due to how they plan the insurance system to work than they still should be able to bring in plenty of cash for the high number of items they can sell.
    3. Most important bit - In game purchases and rentals
This is glossed over often, but you are not really required to purchase a ship with real money to enjoy it. In game there are stores that sell the ships and kiosks that allow you to rent ship for a relatively small fee. You start game with aurora and think salvaging or mining is up your alley? Do a handful of basic missions and you will have enough to rent these ships which in turn allow you to make more credits, so you can either rent other ships to try or earn enough to purchase ships you want. Also the community is awesome so just asking in chat people will let you tour or fly a ship in question or group up to make some credits so you can get your desired ship.
One of the worst things about seeing SC content is sometimes there is either a lack of information or misinformation that turns the discourse toxic. Of course when people that play or follow along try to explain they get labeled as cultist or trying to explain their "Ship Purchase". It is sad and somewhat telling when people get attacked for trying to clarify a lack of information or misinformation.

      @whamo_3 วันที่ผ่านมา

@staticneuron I'm not going to fully agree with @718Hokage here, but I'm going to play devil's advocate as a fellow longtime backer who, while generally optimistic about the project, also agrees with a lot of the criticism that is levied (even when it is often in bad faith - though 718Hokage made no real argument which is always disappointing). I'll similarly go point by point here, and won't necessarily disagree with all the points you raise - but I really wanted to make a comment in general contention to your points because I feel most of your 'pointing out persistent misunderstandings' is biased/opinionated, and more interested in swaying people in favor of the project rather than being realistic and presenting primarily facts regarding the project (which is fine to do, but feels misrepresented by suggesting your opinions are factual by saying you are 'combating misunderstandings/misinformation).
      1. Agreed with the progression plan as stated in the context of 1.0, but right now - ships are progression, and will be for the foreseeable future, due to the lack of other progression means. We still do not have a projected timeframe when crafting and reputation will come in game, and there are no meaningful money sinks beyond ships currently. Agreed that the server wipes are technical issues - but when it is the current primary progression loop in a paid alpha (antithetical to most alphas which invite testers and provide them with most assets in the game) where their main money maker is selling ships, it's worth criticizing at this time. To that point, I would say that right now larger ships are strictly 'better' if you are playing with friends for similar reasons - but still agreed in the context of 1.0 talk.
      2. Agreed that the last we heard, ships will no longer be sold following the release of 1.0. With that said, while yes we can assume that will not change, it's not unreasonable for someone to feel it COULD change given the general number of changes in scope/expectations for the PU over the years. In fact, I feel the community's reaction to Lando's clarification on pledge store insurance is one of relief and satisfaction - with many in my org suggesting this means pledge ships are now effectively underpowered - and I believe this could easily lead to marketing feeling they can then continue selling ships in 1.0. We've had two ships and one rifle sold en masse in the last year alone which we were told would not be released until SQ42's release, and that would have to be earned by completing that game, for an example I feel is at least somewhat relevant.
      3. Agreed you don't have to purchase ships with real money to enjoy them. Also agreed the community will generally be willing to take new players around - though new players can tend to not reach out for said help/guidance. I would say the recent economy changes to further enforce the current progression loop of acquiring ships as detailed in item 1 has skewed this against your overall point. You don't have to buy a ship with real money to enjoy it, but many of the ships are now quite a bit more difficult to obtain - and given the very broken state of this current patch (mostly server-side but still fair to point out), it gets that much more frustrating to make marginal gains towards a ship when it's a swipe away, and that FOMO which CIG is preying on is disappointing to see.
I certainly agree it is frustrating that the general gaming public is still so aggressively against the project, given you and I have likely had any number of genuinely remarkable, unique and unforgettable experiences with friends in this game over the past few years - but I also think it is fair to meet people where they are and appreciate the perspective that this project has largely earned its reputation, regardless of the toxicity of discourse often had. A lot of the points I tried to raise were for the sake of trying to illustrate that a lot of Luke's criticism and points made in this video were largely contextualized in the current state of the project. I felt he was expressing wishes to see things change come 1.0 that were less to do with nuanced specifics about the game - but general concerns raised by a gamer who, while maybe not intimately familiar with the game, uses the information he does have to poke reasonable holes in what he's presented with, in a mostly charitable and respectful manner.
You don't have to be an expert in something to criticize it, you just need to represent yourself as 'not a doctor' and be humble enough to also be open to being corrected. I think Luke did very well in this video, and didn't provide blatant misinformation as his feelings towards things that generally do happen/exist and are accurate in the current project, and fairly analyzed the 1.0 discussion with a critical and concerned lens. I do hope this finds you well and am open to correction or challenge on my thoughts as well - have a good one o7

Wipes are actually very infrequent these days and only occur with very major patches or if something goes very, very wrong.
I last played Star Citizen February of this year, and I logged in yesterday and there has been no wipe in that time.
There will likely be a wipe soonish, with patch 4.0, as that patch adds the second star system and will change the game massively. And for the ship costs, they retain their value in their store. So, lets say you buy a $40 valued ship, and you play for a month and you want to upgrade to a $60 ship. You can trade your ship in, get $40 store credit and pay $20 more to buy the new ship. If someone saved a typical MMO subscriptions worth every month, they can get from a starter ship to a capital ship in 5-ish years. One thing that I should point out in your video, is that on your 'descent' to Arial, you were in SCM-Gun mode instead of NAV-FLT, which means your maximum speed was like 1/10th of what it could be, which is a fair mistake for someone who checks in every so often. A recent patch introduced Master Modes to the game, with SCM-Standard Combat Mode, being much lower in top-speed compared to NAV-Flight mode, which cannot actively use its weapons (or shields) in exchange for much higher top speed.
Also wipes rarely happen these days, there was like a two-year gap between wipes, and because of how wipes now work, they RARELY wipe your in-game cash, to the point I can't even remember the last time they did so, which means you can just re-buy the ship even if they have to wipe player-ship-ownership for some reason.

In all honesty that's not even wrong, and I'm saying this as a long time backer and believer in the project lol When they announced the 1.0 release feature set and vision first thing I thought was something like "wow how have been ok not having this until now" because now it's tangible. Before it was totally just a set of features wrapped in a "best space sim ever" bow. Now you can say that this 1.0 release will never happen, and I would disagree, but hey at least we have it now. some of it is ambitious sure but they've released more in the past year than like the last 3 years combined. I'm for one cautiously optimistic. But back to your point. I can fully appreciate that before the announcement of a 1.0 release vision it was exactly. The issue I think was that they have been in the weeds with scope creep for too long. If this all turns out we'll thank them for it though. But this 1.0 release vision is a hopeful thing for me.

it is totally up to the player to decide if they want to support what they have created. If you really love the idea the devs have and you want to support there's way to do so, and in return you get things back you can use right away. They don't try to hide that game has problems resources are all over to show the state of the game so if you dont want to support their vision then you dont have to while its in this state.
I think a lot of people who say this game is scam don't realize that the entire game engine had to be made from scratch. They had to build the game engine from nothing because no engine on the market could do what their vision was. They are inventing new things never seen at this scale for games too. I really hope they don't trademark or copyright what they make so other developer could build off of it in the future. Seeing what is being made possible in the universe is generally so fascinating from the eyes of gamer. I cant imagine what other developers think when they see what they have accomplished.

As for the money spent, a lot also refuse to listen to reason.
    - They had to restart development a couple of times due to changes and initial engines being unable to handle the desired game.
    - They are having to develop an entire engine at the same time of developing the game. And on top of that, Squadron 42 is being made at the same time.

Now, i can't play it ofc, cos it's very, very laggy for me, but even that bit of gameplay i did get to enjoy, was exactly what i wanted out of a game such as this. The ability to fly around planets, land wherever, trade cargo, mine in space, do bounty hunting like a Fett, and such. Hey Luke, you assume that just because someone bought a big ship they cut a corner. Luckily or unfortunatelly (depending from which angle you look at) that is not the case. Why? Because you will need actual other players to even be able to operate said ship besides flying it. You will have to have engineers and other crew that need to do specific tasks on these bigger ships to keep them operational. Also the running costs are way higher when you have a big ship. So essentially, having a bigger ship means you need to put WAY more time into it to be able to make a profit from it. Plus: When we will all start out, you wont even have enough starting money to operate your big ship that you bought with real money. It will just sit there until you grinded enough money to actually put your big ass ship to some use. And whether or not you will be able to run your ship profitable, thats an entirely different question.
So if you look at it like this: SC is definitely not p2w so to speak. Because while you get a big ship, you dont necessarly "win" anything, in fact you have more work on your hands and need to invest a shit ton of time more compared to someone who is simply happy flying their 1-2 crew ship.
This aspect seems to be completely ignored when people complain about SC selling ships. These complaints assume that you buy the biggest purchaseable ship in the game (4000$? i dont know exactly) and just get rich ingame? Far from it. This biggest ship will probably need 20-30 people at least to operate, then you have to split profits of course, imagine the time you have to sink in to coordinate all these people.
I think the people complaining don't know that you simply cant operate a big ship alone. You can currently, yes, but just because most of the systems are not implemented yet. Thats however definitely not how the game will look once 'released'.

@@Stupoider They didn't reassure backers that they can solo large ships with AI blades. This is yet another example of how they have said time and time again that a player will not be able to solo a large ship. Definitely some valid concerns you brought up at the end. Recently had a discussion about this with a friend. The main issue right now with buying ships in game is definitely the wipes, but with their 1.0 plan, those wipes will no longer happen making buying and crafting your ships to keep in game wayy more viable.
This brings up the concern of how difficult or lengthy they'll make it to get ships in game to potentially incentivize just buying them for actual money. And if they do stop selling ships, how else would they be able to appropriately fund the studio to keep building on their ambitions?
These are exciting times to be a fan, but there's definitely room to be concerned with the future of the game, even with the huge advancements it's been making lately.

Also, they have two versions of the Star Lancer, and one is coming out in the next patch next month with IAE. It was such a bad idea to announce SQ42 when it is still 2 years away and they didn't even say that this was the definite release date they just said they feel confident that they will hit this. But saying I still love the game and backed in 2016 so any progress is good news.😂

$730,000,000 funding divided by 22,828,453 players = $31.97 per player. So that again divided by, let's say, 10 years is like $3.19 a year. Well they used every penny very good I would say.
People waste more money on gambling etc. then in Star Citizen.
    After 1.0 no wipes anymore.
And it is: planet (some with moon) - solar system - galaxy - galaxy clusters in different sizes - universe. We will never have galaxies or above in Star Citizen (ok, never say never).
Still a good video tho - keep 'em coming.

"People waste more money on gambling etc. then in Star Citizen."
This is a misnomer. By your logic if we divide all potential gamblers by total money spent gambling, it would also be extraordinarily low. That is not the reality; both have their whales, and both aren't necessarily healthy for industry or personal wellbeing. While Star Citizen is a programming marvel and game I personally enjoy, there are individuals who - for lack of a better term - have a problem.
The issues that self-evidently arise from how we conduct business is not mutually exclusive to our responsibility to improve ourselves. Some arguments range from "Oh, the rich buy fancy cars, why not sell fancy ships?" to a resounding "Who cares." It seems people are really missing the point.

@@BlueBloodPenn There are literal capital ships that serve different functions such as Trade, Crafting (like crafting huge bases on planets or in space), Salvaging (bigger ships allow you to salvage faster and store larger amounts of salvage for trade), War ships (basically naval aircraft carries with good defenses and large weapons), Supply ships (moving materials, ammo, weapons, food, crafting materials, vehicles, components) across the universe, I'm sure there are more examples. The point is that these larger ships act as hubs for an organization/large group of players to operate in and out of to progress in the game in whatever way the choose. These large ships are not designed for a solo player or even a small group. At citizen con they also showed one of the "bosses" a massive sandworm that's bigger than a capital ship that takes a large group of players to take down and then you loot the "boss" for crafting materials and other items you can trade for money. This was just one of many more large scale "bosses" to come. Not to mention there is already the Idris capital ship battle in game which is technically a group boss along with other large events that are put on throughout the year. Obviously at the moment the only real point is to make money to buy better ship or vehicles, but once these things make it to the live branch we will have bases which will be the start of large scale wars between orgs with their 1,000 player plus server meshing and many other gameplay opportunities to explore the verse. There is so many things that could really make this game stand out and the hardest part is waiting for them to make it into the game. It sucks but they really are getting closer and closer every year. I'll wait as long as it takes to get this game where it plans to be. There is nothing like it, even in its current state.

41:25 I can't remember the last full wipe, it has been so long. Usually in wipes you loose consumables, cargo, jobs (ammo, drinks, food, commodities, refinery orders) but keep you ships, components, weapons, armour and either you are given an amount of credits based on how much you played the last patch and your current balance or you just keep your current balance of credits. That has been the case for quite some time now. That's why you will see players on reddit and ingame reminding everyone to sell their cargo etc before a patch is expected.

@@insanelyberserk3778 The wipes have actually become quite rare. I bought several ships in the game and still own them, even though several patches have already been released. The money is still there too. Everything that has to do with ‘long-term persistence’, so to speak (and that includes e. g. ships, armour or weapons), was not wiped lately. And as soon as SC reaches version 1.0, wipes will be a thing of the past anyway, if not sooner.
