"Consciousness is Immortal.“ | An In-Depth Interview with Tom Campbell

  • Tom Campbell is a former NASA physicist and large systems analyst turned consciousness researcher.
Next to his technology-centric career, he joined the team of volunteering research subjects around Robert Munroe, where they volitionally induced and systematically investigated phenomena of paranormal nature like e.g. out-of-body experiences, remote viewing, telepathy to name the most prominent.
In his trilogy "My Big TOE" (TOE: Theory of Everything) he describes the nature of our larger reality, provides a complete theory of consciousness, and explains our purpose and connection to that larger reality. Along the way, Mr. Campbell derives a more fundamental science that directly answers the most pressing problems and paradoxes of modern physics.
    Contents:
00:00:20 If you had to put your big theory into a nutshell - what does it say?
00:04:46 Entropy is devolving from order to disorder - can we put it like that?
00:09:30 Ideas and theories of this reality are a simulation - are you ok with that?
00:13:08 Some scientists reject your point of view - would you say that their view is entirely wrong or incomplete?
00:23:55 David Bohm and his theory of the implicate order - what is your opinion?
00:30:46 What do you think about the idea that there is a cyclical universe and infinite number of big bangs?
00:43:40 You are addressing some of the weaknesses of the original Double-Slit Experiment …
    00:57:21 A theory of consciousness
00:58:25 The phenomena of remote viewing used by the CIA?
00:59:27 The database and what is sometimes called the akasha record in spiritual philosophies?
01:04:02 Why would the system make this information available to a medium if one of the tenets of your theory holds that the agent should never be able to tell that it is a virtual reality?
01:09:02 Would the individual units of consciousness be sort of a holographic replica of a large consciousness system?
01:10:30 Is our world in which we live currently but one of many virtual realities?
01:17:30 You are referring to what is sometimes called “Qualia” …
01:19:59 According to what you are saying, the outcome should never be predictable depending on who is doing or watching the experiment?
01:23:20 We cling to the idea that something of us should last - would that make sense within your theory?
01:35:04 Do you think that our individuated unit of consciousness may indeed persist potentially and definitely eternally?

Nothing beats life experience :-) many years too, sometimes I see a new video and drop in, see if I can help out
Ah we have a belief trap "disbelief" moment with the view of John. Well John, if it doesn't work for you that is fine, but it does not mean you are all knowing; and thus you are not able to say our experiences are wrong. My experiences and my deep thought and logical process of imagining all the possible answers completely verify the MBT model, it is far more elegant than I ever imagined a TOE would be, as a science fan in school I was just regurgitating what I was told, and taking it as fact. Like NEWTON and "LAWS" which.. turned out to be changed.. and so on. Fixating on old ideas is a sure fire way to take a step backwards instead of forwards, and not have a happy existence ! for example name calling out of that trigger the ego is so easily attached to. The fear of not knowing something is fundamentally terrifying, we are the makers of our personal information structure, as we live this life. And more lives give a rich perspective on things, seeing any of your own bad or good choices from the point of view of those affected is where we do eventually make some of our major steps becoming a better person.
You are not privy to any of our personal verification and knowledge of reality. If you were experiencing your own personal experiments, it would not be our reality ? only YOU were there noone else can label your opinion a "nut bar" now can they. If you perceived some weird experience in life that made no sense and years later under new circumstances it turned out to be valuable to you and give you a great feeling of comfort and happiness, if your struggles became just the day to day background noise you now ignored and perhaps your pain was also lessened.. would you go and ask for a straightjacket ? or would you tell someone you care about how you had this profound realization and sound like a waffling idiot trying to share your experience that is foreign to their reality ? this happens, people who don't pay attention and have critical thinking skills just have the simple ego attachment all the time with reactions like "youre stupid", "noone cares", "that doesn't mean anything" and so on.. it is a simple reaction to how you FEEL.. we often have this need to label things, so its very easy to just label something as definitely wrong.
Did they say weird science god is a total nut bar and wrong, and this is just a hoax, we are all on drugs, something in the water ? no because they were grown ups, very smart, and curious ! they found a way to create experiments that would reveal more to think about, and then it didn't answer anything and was backwards, impossible to reconcile.. this is all fact.. or unless history is a complete lie as well 😁
Expecting us to be you ? basically ~99% of everyone who makes an effort to think and not have a predefined set of facts.. they find massive value here over some 10 years of content.. all given freely and with joy by Tom.. and so many of our vastly better lives are direct proof of not believing things, being open minded skeptic as Tom says ! ever since my year or so of really putting in the effort, thinking and listening and relistening I have been much happier for years and taking life as it comes ! not wasting interactions or neglecting my past experiences, all of them have value and lessons especially now as I have had a strange two part life.. i was very self absorbed and focused on my gaming, all of the experience I had that I class as profound are very fitting, self immersing yourself in a 3D world of combat with only a flat screen and blocky pixels and brown and grey foreign world with weird movement of the avatar.. well it turns out the act of focusing is everything. Some experiences were like hacking reality for short bursts, which gamers call "in the zone".. we stop perceiving the room we are in or even that we are pressing keys and moving our mouse. The data we focus on with intense focus creates an immersion that is fleeting, seems to come out of nowhere, but I would say is INDISTINGUISHABLE from reality here, in a dream, or any sort of VR headset thing where you really do feel "presence" of teleportiing away from this weird reality when you take the thing off.
Stating facts and being real about something makes a person a nut ? feel free to live in a limited existence, hope you find your way this lifetime is about to get very exciting. 2021 is "a very lucky year" as we enter the real information age, the 4th industrial era. Year of the (Metal) 0x, when we begin to enter "API world" and hyperconnected global potential. What we do with it matters.. positive feedback cycles not negative ones, telling others how they should act and spreading hate on social media is the one thing I really hope is gone ASAP. So many problems are OUR OWN and that's why life has been too.. easy in a way since I was able to apply my own logic and see a.. peaceful happy existence where I look at everything as a puzzle, sometimes even helping someone..
And sometimes wall of text they won't even read. If you got this far, even if you are thinking SHUT UP IDIOT.. I am proud..
*everyone is just doing the best they can with what they have* - Tom Campbell

he makes many Amazing points with which I agree 100%. I also agree that when a particular avatar/humans body dies , their consciousness goes on as the larger soul . however I would like to clarify the point that if a medium wants to reach the particular avatar part of a soul after that avatar has transcended then I think in fact they are able to do that .so If I leave the body that is currently playing the role of Carla and go back into the consciousness that is my larger soul if a medium wants to talk to the part of me that played the role of Carla that’s absolutely possible.

I've found that most of the greatest discoverers and creators throughout history have the same general belief. In older times they would indicate this to those who were capable of understanding without "inquisiting" by having their portraits done showing their fingers crossed. Later they would say things like, Imagination is more important than knowledge and The most important question we can ask is do we believe the Universe is friendly. Planck said it's not logical to view the structure of the Universe and believe that it doesn't have an intelligent designer. Many famous people are often accused incorrectly as being materialist. I think for many this error of perception is what allowed them to become famous. Many could have easily fallen victim to inquisitive minds. 🤗

First let me say that I agree with you. I began meditation in 1979 and I had an amazing remote viewing experience in 1980, it was when I was sleeping, at the time I thought more in terms of 'out of body experience' I felt as though I were flying ; it was vivid , I saw a passenger plane flying over what seemed, that is I felt was a middle European landscape; there was also a small private plane not far away; I watched as a weapon like a rocket launcher appeared it shot down the passenger plane. I sat up in bed and thought about how vivid and unbroken in continuity it was . Dreams are always skipping about. In the morning while I poured my coffee there was a story with news footage of a plane crash in Europe , it was that exact landscape. I don't recall the country now. The cause of the crash was undetermined ; and I didn't feel the need to share that incident as I could imagine the response. Many other things in my life lead me to concur with you, But in the end the answer to " where did conscious evil from, why did it How did it? Personally I don't dwell on any of those things; I dwell in the current, I surf the ebb and flow of conscious, Love is like catching a wave and hate is a wipeout.

Great interview, so interesting. However; my intuition keeps insisting that: as soon as you conceptualise consciousness, you limit it... or your understanding of it. It’s infinitely more complex yet more simple than we could even begin to comprehend with our earthly minds and scientific experiments.
That said, this man’s theories really resonate and make a lot of sense. His interview demonstrates how scientific studies can certainly ‘point to’ how it all works’ ...but can never know it in its entirety, or even come close.
I say this because there’s a sense that as soon as we observe or understand how it works, it’s evolves further - so it’s like a precursor that we can never catch up with (nor are we meant to).
Basically, we can never say - “I’ve found the ultimate answer” because there isn’t one! But still... our ego, our awe and wonderment will want to create THE answer so it will continues to take us on this journey... just as it’s meant to I suspect.
Beautiful really, isn’t it. Who wants to wake up knowing everything... devoid of awe, excitement and a sense of expansiveness beyond ourselves.
This has always been my feeling... for what it’s worth!

@Light Dweller, "Who wants to wake up knowing everything... devoid of awe, excitement and a sense of expansiveness beyond ourselves." Exactly! You nailed it for me in your comment! We aspire to knowing it all, but "god" forbid we ever get there.... that would totally kill the thrill, wouldn't it? I think, Einstein said something to a similar effect. He also said science without religion would be lame, religion without science blind, something like that. But I like your nutshell version of it even better!

We are limited because being unlimited was limiting. It's as if you're the game developer and you give yourself infinite health, money, power, etc. You won't experience the game as it was intended to, if you can hop levels without effort. That's why it can be mind wobbling to try and grasp your mind around consciousness; deep inside you feel the true nature, but no human will ever be able to put it down in words or formulas.

I was with him up to the one hour point, whereupon he revealed that he has no soul. If NDE'ers can interact in two way communication with the "dead", then that kind of negates what he claims about it just being information from some vault. No, I believe it is true communication. There were real exchanges between spirit beings who asked if people wanted to return to Earth, or not. Maybe I am misunderstanding him. At least I finally get what the double slit experiment was about.

If I may humbly suggest to read Mr. Campbell's reference to "the player" as such, i.e. a soul, if that is what you're looking for. @@AaaaaBeeee Carol Bowman used the term "signature" in our interview on this playlist here, which I like a lot, because it is free from all connotations as associated by world religions and spiritual traditions of any kind. And I think I agree on your reading of Mr. Campbell's wording "individuated units of consciousness" in that it can be taken as an equivalent of "soul". I think I understand, though, that with his scientific background, Mr. Campbell tries to avoid being lumped in with any particular spiritual tradition and largely keeps employing science verbiage (which I appreciate as science at least make a decisive attempt to word things as precisely as possible on grounds of given knowledge at any particular time).
I'm currently reading "The Application of Impossible Things" by Natalie Sudman, who gives an account of her service as a civilian supervisor helping in rebuilding Iraq after the second war there and gets blown up by a road side bomb followed by one of the most impressive NDEs I have come across to date. Her fairly short book expands one's understanding of concepts as conveyed by NDEs a great deal and introduces aspects I haven't heard of or read about anywhere else prior. Without meaning to spoil, I think those concepts point in a direction where we'd be best advised to simply ditch all previous wording we had with regard to who and what we are as "spirits" in a human "meat coat" and all the concepts ever discussed in human history. That book of hers is an epic eye opener and introduces realms of consciousness at least I had been unaware of before (and I've digested TONS of such material, including what I believe to have been a near death like experience of my own at around age 4).

The biggest thing that's stopped me for a long time with respect to believing in free will, aside from the sense that things need sufficient causation or that any choice at a given time seems only virtual (ie. I live the decision process but have no reason to believe that it wouldn't play out precisely like that 100x, 1000x, 1000000x, etc.) is that there didn't seem to be any teleological rule that the system needs to not know the outcome. that actually raises a paradox, if a conscious being is all that exists and is omniscient to that system - is it possible, no matter how complex that system is or how 'on the cheap' evolution occurs (generator functions rather than schematics), that it would not be able to track the complexity of that system and wouldn't all outcomes be known a head of time regardless of how data rich the system is - or is this just my 'omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent' Catholic catechism showing up in unexpected ways?

One woman was told her son would die at 16, another was told her mother would die in 10 years, a man was shown the death of a family in his city in a car accident. All three things happened. Our consciousness wanted to experience this world, and the body is literally the vehicle that allows us to do so. Once the body dies, consciousness returns to the realm or space where all consciousness lives. This is what I believe anyways. I have had alot of out of body experiences, and after learning about other peoples near death experiences, I have come to the conclusion that our consciousness transcends this reality we currently live in.

The intention is to make it lovely and if it appears not to be I get creative with my interpretation. Tom's Big TOE fits my reality completely. I love influencing other people's reality frames by data dumping, with love of course ! Giving people a larger consciousness base by messing with their meaning-making is fun. I love being consciousness as an artist and pulling back so I see all reality as a huge mandala wherein each pixel creates it's own meaning as colour and shape, but from my vantage point as consciousness it is just a multi coloured tapestry that I get to enjoy and play with, like a child playing with a kaleidoscope.

The equilibrium/balance in reality is far more than we have understood yet.. it seems Einstein had a lot more than general relativity, everything is relative in other ways ? there is always dichotomy deep down somewhere, maybe I am wrong but something about how things actually are is so deceptively simple it sticks out.. the words to explain it escape me but it is not important to me of course. Funny how things turn out, my own bad choices and not finishing first year at uni led me into a whole different world.. more mistakes followed and some things I could have regretted so much have been more and more invaluable lately ! make the most of it all etc.. very nice having this.. perspective and what I think is a very very unique life experience set.. might have to mark this one down as an outlier where I got lucky not to completely go off the rails into an antisocial unhappy fearful mess.. I do have a comment and would love feedback: I too don't think IUoC (you and me) can never really be 'kicked out' of the system especially if you accept that each IUoC was created from Perfection/Source/Consciousness/God. We must have a spark of that perfection in each of us as 'potential' and therefore eventually we will succeed. Many Eastern religions speak of either getting put back into the cycle of reincarnation or the ultimate goal of being absorbed back into the Source. It makes sense to me that each of us has the 'potential' to become Perfection in this human condition. Though this is more of an Eastern thought, maybe Jesus's story is one of how he reached Perfection on earth. Jesus didn't reincarnate, did he?

Although, I think we should really step back from vilifying paradox. I think the paradoxes are the inherent glue that holds reality together. You can see this in the mystical side of almost any religion. That paradox seems to be part of the experience that we all have in these skinsuits.
Rather than trying to use human logic to try to find a linear path from freeing ourselves from paradoxes-I would say that sometimes, even in the name of mysticism, we should just let go trying to fully create a logical path to unravel paradoxes all the time.

Consciousness has grown, become more aware and refined itself in dialectical relationship to Teknos /(the beautiful technogy or art) and Being in the transcendental evolving language system.
Here are many analogies for consciousness and reality mimicking how computers and their games function.
The conversation inspired alternative analogies from the theatre - ie the areas behind the scenes (virtual reality).
Poets and artists have also created totalising functioning analogies for the totality.
Here I think of Goya, Turner, Klimt... involving mystic painter physics.
I think different languages suggest different world models.
Great to hear so much from the captivating scientist Thomas Campbell and his insightful interviewer.

    • @wesboundmusic

That's exactly what gives me a headache, @S Darby, as it has a ring of materialism to it, i.e. the use of substances I mean (I love to be proven wrong on that, though). From some NDErs' accounts, it looks as if medication had zero effect on the perceptions they had while "out of the body". With psychoactive substances, even minute doses can have a marked or strong effects (I can personally attest to it from recently participating in a clinical trial with medium to higher doses of LSD administered for research purposes). That in particular has me scratch my head with all things "consciousness". If it can be so dramatically altered by way of some (chemical) molecules interacting with some receptors in the brain... how then could anyone say that (human) consciousness was independent of the brain/body?
I mean, I'm just wondering. It knocks a dent in the whole "spiritual"/conscioussness/we're-eternal "argument", doesn't it? Something's either amiss.... or consciousness is far simpler than we tend to think in our anthropocentric bias.

But in all fairness: I tentatively agree from this ONE - an so far sole - "mind altering" /perception altering experience. I'd just humbly add that responsible and safe administration of "drugs" might effect a "reset" in some neural pathways that are otherwise near impossible to come by. Or such is the idea of those parties going about clinical trials which investigate the potential use of the latter in and for therapeutic settings. None other. I have quite some mixed feelings about this interview. I totally favor the idea that consciousness is fundamental. It makes logically sense and matches my personal experiences. Tom Campbell presents a bunch of meaningful ideas here based on that general assumption, but they're not at all new. The notion of reality being a "simulation" is just the modern-world interpretation of what Buddhism teaches since ages: that reality is a construct of the mind, and that all there is is process. The idea that we all live in our own constructed realities is also very old.
But exactly how does it work? How is the "simulation", if you will, constructed? How come that this "Ego-I" was constructed and is now in this reality? Why isn't it somewhere else, why is it so reluctant to change into other realities? It's almost as if it would "snap back" into this one. The brain and sensual organs seem to create a feedback loop between consciousness and physical reality. How does that come into play? What exactly is consensual reality, how does it come about, and what mechanism makes it so ridiculously stable? I feel that we're totally missing a concise theoretical framework that connects consciousness and physical reality, and it disappoints me that Tom doesn't even provide a fundamental approach to answering all this in the interview. I'd have expected that a physicist should have come up with a more rigorous, systematic and formalized theory in 35 years. I wonder if that is in the books, but I doubt so after hearing these 1.5 hrs. The presented idea of entropy could provide an approach, but how does it calculate? Physical system(s) and consciousness system should form a closed total system since there is no outside environment. So, how does the idea of that system trying to lower its entropy fit with the 2nd law of thermodynamics stating that entropy can only grow larger in a closed system? Btw I feel that Donald Hoffman's approach of modeling individual consciousnesses as interacting agents is more promising. But we need to derive all known physical laws from there, otherwise the concept isn't worth all too much. Testable new physical experiments should also come out of this.
What I also note is that models like this often tend to get too anthropocentric. I think that's a fundamental mistake. The world isn't evolving around humans, even if they often like to think so. E.g. the notions of "good" and "bad" are mostly defined by human-level moral, probably much less so by consciousness itself.

    • @wesboundmusic
      @wesboundmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For what it's worth, Amber: I had these and some similar questions in my notes. In preparing for this interview, I went fairly deep into Hoffman's approach, Nick Bostrom's, Klee Irwin's, to name just the most recent ones (oh, and not to forget Bernardo Kastrup). And personally, not in my role as interviewer, I tend to agree with you (and particularly on your mention that we tend to get too anthropocentric with our research for the fundamentals of the universe). I tried to get Mr. Campbell to give us an outline as to how the framework of his theory differs from Hoffman's et al. or vice versa . And I also thought to have found inconsistencies in his framework, which I tried to get him to resolve. I must leave it up to the viewers to decide, whether or how well he responded to that.
As far as testable predictions, Mr. Campbell and a team of volunteering researchers are in the process of designing and collecting funding for more in-depth experiments testing the core assumptions Mr. Campbell states at the outset of these 90 mins. + and which he talks about on his own channel. Meanwhile, the larger part of his ideas he was going to explore was already looked at by other scientists and what they found pretty much confirms the Copenhagen interpretation of Quantum Physics (which seems to be Mr. Campbell's position as well as he says in the interview). And very recently, Carlo Rovelli lays out an approach that suggests all we see, measure, experience is basically a vast web of interrelations, more than "objective reality" or a simulation. (I commented on this here: wp.me/p7yW9-GT). And very recently, causal set theory has entered this field of debate again.
So, yes, this topic area is a very productive one with lots of other promising contenders.

Think of Layering in an online MMORPG game server. Thousands of players get placed into layers in one server. All of those players are existing on the same server, but they can only see and interact with other players who exist within their layer of that server.
To me, that would be similar to saying that there is one true fundamental consciousness that started everything, and all physical/material things that exist are all manifestations derived from that source consciousness. Every new thing to come out of that source, creates a new layer, then another, and another, and another, infinitely.
All things have 'their own universe'.
But all things and all universes came from the original source consciousness.
But, this raises the question- Don't MMO's have multiple servers with multiple layers per server? (server representing a universe)

Also bear in mind Seth Speaks has to do with CHANNELING and there are a lot folks that are against that as they believe its not of God. Again though im not saying it is or isn't. When our brain dies the barrier is removed and we meld into the larger consciousness. So why? Why do we live these dissociated lives? The only thing I can see is so that we can suffer. Do we keep all of our memories and feelings? And I don't mean just stored. I mean do we have feelings as pieces of consciousness? Do we feel love, hurt, envy etc? Do we interact with other pieces of consciousness with these feelings in a way we would as if we were avatars (not physically since we are non physical then) and how would this interaction be I wonder? Can we use the same avatar in another virtual reality, since the information is all there already?
