  • Prof. Donald Hoffman talks to Essentia Foundation's Hans Busstra about his theory of conscious agents, according to which space and time are cognitive constructs in consciousness, not an objective scaffolding of the world outside. The interview also touches on Prof. Hoffman's personal history and life, bringing the warmth of his humanity to the academic rigor of his theories.
00:00 Intro: Beyond the spacetime headset
    03:32 About Donalds personal background
07:35 On the importance of mathematics
    13:22 Quantum theory and spacetime
19:24 Why exactly is spacetime 'doomed'?
24:34 Did physics 'encounter' consciousness in quantum theory?
32:49 On heavy vs light metaphysical claims
37:36 How is your theory affecting your personal life?
42:17 Is The Matrix a good metaphor?
46:38 How can the space time interface affect consciousness?
53:09 What makes you say that if spacetime is not fundamental, consciousness must be fundamental?
55:44 Physicalism fails to give an accurate model of consciousness...
1:00:24 How can we put the spacetime headset off?
05:39 Beyond the spacetime fantasies of Christopher Nolan and the Matrix...
1:09:27 The ontology of conscious agents
1:15:05 Are meditation and psychedelics 'hacks' in the interface?
1:21:41 Should we revalue religious and mystic literature?
1:29:54 Could idealism as a worldview help us better solve the challenges humanity faces?
1:34:23 The role of mathematics in bringing together science and spirituality

Dude I’m so stoked to be alive in a time we’re we have access to these beautiful ideas and the ability to understand them well enough. And I don’t have any fancy book learning. Just keeping pace at my leisure but still absorbing it daily. And I know I’m not the only one that does it. Probably everyone here does. Just learning all this heavy shit for the sake of learning. I know it doesn’t feel like it when you look at the state of the world as it’s broadcast, but what if we are all collectively getting exponentially smarter. Let’s hope so.

I notice the best way to always learn is to always stay curious. I think society makes us stop being curious at some age and most people stay stagnant cause they aren’t curious and wanting to know more.

Fantastic! I wish Donald had been there when I was growing up in a small southern town trying to discuss these same points with the southern Baptists around me! (Needless to say those “discussions” did not go well. Though they didn’t go much better when later talking to my neuroscience colleges either. 🤔) Very happy to hear a respected scientist openly discussing such things! Bravo!

Consciousness may be a non local phenomena that exists in another dimension outside spacetime. I tend to think the other conscious entities (e.g. what some refer to as aliens, etc) exist there, have learned to travel within that dimension, and manifest in our spacetime dimension we humans exist in.

This is the gist of Buddhism and most Eastern contemplative religions. Someone said all of this 2,500 years ago. There are mountains of literature. Unfortunately, there was no proper acknowledgement. Otherwise, a great conversation. Very good questions from the interviewer which totally immersed and challenged Donald, resulting in great insights from Donald, as usual.

I think Hinduism should get the biggest credit, but all mystics from every culture and every religions also know this truth. Anyone who meditates enough will come to experience this as well. Dr. Hoffman does meditate daily and he acknowledges the wisdoms in spiritual practices.

@@zenkat19 they definitely did not, not mathmatically. The assertion that neurons don't exist is quite another thing from Eastern Philosophy, even if they have similarities, any moreso than Locke and Kant say the same thing, or even Kant predicted Hoffman.
Respectfully, of course. I don't mean to shout anyone down; I don't think you can ignore Hoffman because you share metaphysical ideas with one aspect of what he says. 'Consciousness being fundamental' is only so until you get to the borders of his theory.

I understand what you are saying, but this could not be comprehended by the vast majority of the population. I only say this because I feel like too many intelligent people have this humility that is not helpful, and it makes them assume that other people know just as much or more than them. I think that assumption is dangerous and smart people need to take the itintive to lead others to improved outcomes.

Wonderful interview! Thank you! Krishnamurti and David Bohm made a wonderful series of talks where they deeply dived into the meaning of time and thought. The insight presented in the interview is not new except perhaps for the fact that it came from a mathematical approach. The insight itself has been named in multiple ways before. For example: “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.” - Rumi, or, "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form, form is nothing but emptiness and emptiness is nothing but form." - Heart Sutra Buddhism. The Mind & Life Institute is an example of an institute bridging science with contemplative traditions.

    • @andrejkt2631
      @andrejkt2631 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Yes that particular insight is not new. Mystics of the past had way much better understanding of nature and metaphysics than any modern person. What is new though, is his proposal to use a precise language (math) and methods (scientific) to discuss and prove the theory that space-time comes from consciousness, which is RADICAL in today's mainstream science. Rather than using imprecise metaphores and subjective terms, which is not appealing to the scientific community. And if he is successful, it will have tremendous impact in the study of physics and technology for future generations.

I, so absolutely love Prof. Donald Hoffman, what a wonderful man, what a contribution to our species, what important work!
    TkU Prof. Hoffman!
I am a Protestant Christian and though I haven't been to the Church House in 30 yrs, I have a loving and amazing, individual relationship with GOD THE FATHER, JESUS CHRIST my LORD and SAVIOR and the HOLY SPIRIT that keeps me on the right track and I'm not concerned in the least by anything Prof Hoffman is presenting!
We speak of what I believe to be, the same Divine Consciousness, I just call HIM GOD.
I don't have to be exact, correct or right about anything.
GOD has already completed the work for me, I’m just required to have FAITH, and it will all work out as planned.
Even with the probabilities of free-will being factored in, I believe HE’s already worked it out for us!
I believe the Faithful, regardless of your ideology, the Good and Faithful, of a Higher Captain steering us through it, will see us carried through it!
And BTW - IF I am GOD, IF as GOD, I created myself, then I need to schedule a "Come to Jesus meeting" with me, myself and I.
So, I can ask myself "WTH" were you thinking?!!
    I couldn't resist!!
GOD Bless! Love and Blessing to ALL!! 🙏✝💜

Hey pretty, your cells unaware that they are made from sub atomic particles which are bound to quatum physics so that they are unbound to spacetime, thus your cells are getting older and start malfunctioning and not multiplying, thus you get old. In a way, what your cells have been doing is maths, repeating multiplying until they can't. Yet what is spacetime? Repetation of the constant of the matter one and one an other in a line. Thus actually spacetime is frames after frames of rendered reality. Yet you understand this or not, your cells are unaware, the planet is unaware, those frames of reality are unaware. Thus yes your electron fueled mind is good at understanding stuff, very not spacetime bound. But the conscioussness your mind creates or projects is still bound to the wellbeing of your mind, and the flesh case it is in. Thus following rhetoric like following Hitler's propaganda on politics, won't bring you comfort or peace. "headset" thus is yet an other made up worthless rhetoric much like "spirit" or "soul" or "energy being" or whatever had been there for a while. So believe me you are very bound to spacetime. You will remember this next time you fall on your head or you are late for somewhere, the "headset" you are filled by these book sellers such as Hoffman, is very real and working. You live and die by the "headset", or "spacetime" or "physics" or whatever you may refer to.

He is right! The first thing I experienced in my life after death experience was my face passing through what I can only discribe as a membrane. On the other side was me....we are already in the 'afterlife' we just can't see it the membrane is our will to live. (Update) I've been thinking about it and another way I would discribe it is if you look at a flat screen really close is made up of little pixels that make up an image. So think of there being another image you would see if you looked between the pixels.... through the pixels..... Think of our reality as being composed of multidimensional pixels..👈

I had an experience like this. Everything was pixelated. I was looking around in shock saying “oh my God nothing is real”.. Than I looked at my body and it was also pixelated, I realized that I too was not real (at least as how my mind defines real). I was able to move the pixels and kept reaching in and moving layer after layer… Like peeling a digital onion. It may be that the substance of reality is digital. Meaning that the fundamental reality is digital in nature, and since it goes on forever we create technology thinking that it is something unnatural since it’s man made, when really it may be the very fabric of God just recreating itself through itself over and over again. Maybe there is no such thing as artificial intelligence, maybe it’s the limitations put on intelligence that is artificial. Could just be that intelligence is simply intelligence.

Yes! That's a great analogy! I've had meditative experience where I can .. let my mind stop adhering my input into a normal world of 3D Objects, and it's more just... A soup of electricity I can "snap" into our 3d material universe (which is a subjective modeling program I've developed through my life"
Makes me think of this but from dogen's genjokoan:
Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water. The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken.
Although its light is wide and great, the moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide. The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in dewdrops on the grass, or even in one drop of water.
Enlightenment does not divide you, just as the moon does not break the water. You cannot hinder enlightenment, just as a drop of water does not hinder the moon in the sky.
The depth of the drop is the height of the moon. Each reflection, however long of short its duration, manifests the vastness of the dewdrop and realizes the limitlessness of the moonlight in the sky.

Those of us who travel in non ordinary states, OBEs for example, are well aware that consciousness travels outside of space time. When I first started having OBEs 30 plus years ago Traveling in different timelines was one of the first things I did.
It’s fun to listen to people grapple with this. Don is on the right track and maybe he has experiences he isn’t yet talking of his experiences that given him some insights.

@mikemarable4098, I've read Robert Monroe's trilogy, and, with respect to various timelines, I'm left wondering if 'reality' is just a term we are using to refer to a shared context/awareness comprised of points of common focus among individuated consciousness 'structures' (i.e., individual people), which would imply that there is no such thing as 'shaping' or expanding reality, only observing pre-existing potentials which results in a 'unique' experience with SOME points of commonality shared by other individuated consciousnesses we 'interact' with. Your thoughts?

    • @adrianneonline9888

Otherwise, I'd like to hear about the cosmology you've surely constructed by this point, informed by your history of OBEs. What I've been grappling with lately is the question of whether there is actually such thing as 'meaningful influence' with the supposed choices we make with our 'agency' as humans (or consciousness structures having a human experience), if all potential timelines seem to simultaneously exist as potentially accessible, indefinitely?

Inside the parameters of conscience under certain analytical circumstances Time might doesn’t necessary need to be considered a fundamental structure, but if we do that, we should discard the usefulness of the phenomenon that we are trying to describe excluding the Time component of it. In the physical world, not in the “conscience” dimension, time is an inherent ingredient required by the “recipe”. Please allow me to explain.
Let’s take a phenomenon like a normal sound wave, generated by any source that you want to imagine.
    1) The pitch of that sound wave is determined by its frequency, which is a measure of how many oscillations occur per unit of time.
    2) The propagation speed at which a sound wave travels through a medium is a measure of distance covered per unit of time.
    3) A sound wave is composed by various waveforms, such as sine waves for pure tones or more complex waveforms for complex sounds.
This means that in our imaginary “time-less” sound wave; neglecting the time component could hinder our ability to describe or quantify pitch, also our ability to characterize how quickly the wave propagates. The complexity of the total amount of a sound wave that composes a sound wave represents the displacement of particles changes over time. If we remove the Time component basically the phenomenon of sound is not possible.
While it's an interesting thought experiment to explore descriptions without explicitly invoking time, we must remember that time is a fundamental and inseparable aspect of our physical reality, like it or not. It's essential to recognize and appreciate the fundamental role of time in describing and understanding dynamic phenomena. Discarding time may lead to a loss of important information and make some models non-functional for practical applications in the real world. Just like the example I provided. Linear Time is deeply intertwined with the dynamic nature of physical phenomena, and any attempt to describe them should take this fundamental aspect into account. It can be intriguing to explore alternative perspectives and thought experiments, acknowledging the inherent connection between time and the dynamic nature of the physical world is crucial for maintaining practicality and functionality in our descriptions.
Inside the physics that we experience in our physical world, Time is a non excludable dimension. But is a component that doesn’t require necessarily linear functionality for our conscience purposes. It perhaps exists only inside our conscience, as a mere subjective component of our perception of the phenomenon of duration. But evidently inside there, time is somewhere in both modes, linearly and parallel. We just choose the mode we want, depending on our specific needs and circumstances.

Perhaps the assumption that there is existence outside of perception stems from the fact that our conscious experience is embedded into filters we call the “self”. The idea that there is a “you” looking through the filter that is the same consciousness looking through someone else’s filter feels unintuitive because we can’t imagine consciousness without the filter. So we treat it all as one piece. We know reality exists outside of the individual, but since we lump consciousness in with the individual, we then have to place the objective in an unconscious realm. If consciousness is collective, then there is no differentiation between the objective and dream/simulation. Our idea of what constitutes “real” goes out the window because what we commonly refer to as real is simply that which is experienced collectively.

Really interesting. I have a question. If reality as we see it is an illusion and we are all in fact part of a collective consciousness, doesn’t that suggest that someone or something has designed the interface we experience it through ? Am I missing something? If I put a virtual reality headset on I am now in that world- but someone designed that game- that game was created by some engineers. If this world of ours is just an interface doesn’t it suggest that it’s been engineered by someone or something? I know I might be missing his point entirely. I’m new to these concepts.

Even if space and time are our window onto some other reality, that mechanism still has to reflect that reality in some fundamental way for it to be useful. It's not necessary to say we have a shared experience. of course that's an assumption, but a good one I think. If you want to take the video game analogy, we're trying to see the code via the processor instructions via the monitor output but the code still exists and the monitor showed its output.

    Mr. Hoffman understands.
Here's a small nugget of gold:
False imagination teaches that such things as light and shade, long and short, black and white are different and are to be discriminated; but they are not independent of each other; they are only different aspects of the same thing, they are terms of relation, not of reality. Conditions of existence are not of a mutually exclusive character; in essence things are not two but one. Even Nirvana and Samsara's world of life and death are aspects of the same thing, for there is no Nirvana except where is Samsara, and no Samsara except where is Nirvana. All duality is falsely imagined.
    ~ The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra
The above text is spot on albeit with a small error... the error being the "not of reality" for "the real* expresses itself as reality so not to be/feel alone". (* consciousness)

Though I do notice at the end regarding the discussion about the impact on our day-to-day lives and social behaviour an assumption I often see which is to say “this is just a game and we’re all one consciousness, so let’s be nice to one another”. What is to say though that the competition and moral ambiguity of nature is just the natural mode of consciousness outside of the game?
I don’t understand this common leap, although I’ve seen Bernardo also mention he doesn’t think consciousness has inherent values of peace etc. I think it may be the influence of a particular kind of eastern religion on researchers in the area of consciousness.

I agree. Once human values are taken out of the equation, it appears that whatever is having this experience doesn't really mind what happens. Many under the influence of psychedelics have realised that, "It's all good ". That said, most of us seem to be programmed towards getting along and we just have a better time when we are kind or experience the kindness of others. Who knows how happy serial killers and despots are? It may be that being kind is just a practical thing like not having your bathroom and kitchen in the same place rather than a lofty moral goal.

My understanding is that outside time and space consciousness is not competitive as time does not exist and existence does not depend on survival of the fittest as there is no evolution in the conscious timeless dimension.
Consciousness does not need to battle for resources out side time and space.
I don’t think that it’s just about”let’s all be nice to each other” but more that when we wake up to the nature of our existence there is just no need to kill each other as the big perspective makes it pointless and meaningless to hurt others.
As Tolle says love is the understanding that we are all consciousness, all one,and suffering comes from being lost in the game of time and space.

I think people who do deep meditation and been in touch with THE consciousness have reported feelings of bliss, love, and harmony. So why wouldn't you want to have these feelings in the game as well. And you are more likely to get that feeling by being nice to others. But it is your choice.

    • @MeRetroGamer
      @MeRetroGamer ปีที่แล้ว +2

We're experiencing just some subset of all possible experiences. Evolution, competition, egoism... it's all about a very specific state of mind.
This state of mind comes from a very specific metaphysical perspective, and without that specific perspective, then it's all gone. Being selfish is just pointless in a reality where competition is pointless, and competition is pointless in a reality where we're all actually one mind where we'll merge and overlap sooner or later...
That's why they usually talk about love, true empathy and kindness, they're just pointing to how does it feel to be one with everything while playing this game at the same time.
I don't know if love is what is felt when we're out of this kind of existence, but it indeed is what is felt when we actually feel as one while being here in this world.
