Jaguar XE S - Review and Roadtest

  • So would I swap my Audi S4 for the new Jaguar XE S ?
    I have never driven a Jaguar before and in this video I take a look at the range topping Jaguar XE S powered with the mighty 3.0 Supercharged V6 from the F Type.
    You only have to take a walk around your local Jaguar dealership to see that the pipe and slippers, old man image, is long gone. Replaced by a range of very desirable cars. The question I ask is if you are a 3 Series, A4 or C Class driver...should you consider the XE for you next car ? The answer is a resounding YES !
    I would like to thank Harwoods Jaguar of Chichester for letting me have this car for the weekend. They are very keen for people to experience Jaguar...give them a call.

    I'm looking at getting the XE awd version.For those of you who have got one,a few questions.
    Is it smooth on all road surfaces?
    Does it have a lot of road noise?
    Are the electrical systems prone to failing as people have reported?
    How much are servicing costs?
    Thanks

    • @hyphed4196
      @hyphed4196 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Father has an XE-S although it's the rear wheel drive version.
      1. Its decently smooth, definitely more than it's rivals.
      2. I am not sure about lower trim models, but ours is good.
      3. Never had electrical issues with ours apart from the front sensor automatically going off for no reason, replaced the sensor under warranty it's good now.
      4. The V6 needs to be serviced more often then a non performance orientated car, it's around 200-300 pounds.

    • @ashtonmark24
      @ashtonmark24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hyphed4196 apart from big service which is 700-800 from Jaguar (spark plugs etc). I got it done at my local trusted garage instead out of warranty, about £350...

    • @ashtonmark24
      @ashtonmark24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Got a 2016 rwd version a few years ago (still have it) so can't comment on AWD. It's pretty smooth on the roads, soaks up bumps well generally although being sporty it is firmer than say an XJ. Road noise is fine although I'd say the build quality is not as good as XF or XJ. It's a smaller performance saloon, so less sound deadening/reassuring weight to the doors etc. I've had a few annoying niggles (creaks/rattles/whines, leaky screenwash bottle) but nothing expensive, mostly sorted under warranty. Electrics have been fine. Handling is excellent, jekyll and Hyde in and out of dynamic + sport mode, like having 2 cars... Sounds decent but disappointing they didn't give it active exhaust like F-type. Its great fun to drive but like many Jags it definitely has its flaws and I say that as a Jag enthusiast (I came from 10 years of X100 XKR)

    I know it's an old video, but people will be picking these up cheap now. There's a terrible leak issue in the passenger footwell. It can be really bad and you'll go through seal upon seal to try and fix it, but it's due in part, to the rubber gromets on the body behind the wing. They shrink over time and let water in, and it tracks down into the footwell. I got rid of mine because my wife was sick of getting wet feet, and the car takes ages to de-mist, so only later on did I find out how to sort it.

    I sell a lot of cars every year and can certainly tell you these German engined cars are not as reliable as they used to be. Especially Diesels! Bmw diesels eat injectors and DPF filters ,and Audi/Vw 2.0d eats turbos , injectors and duel mass flywheels. In my experience we have had far less trouble with Jaguars. I just hope this ingenium diesel is reliable! The more of this extra eco kit manufacturers put on there diesel engines the more unreliable they seem to become!

    I know this is an old video, however I’ve just ordered a brand new XE R Dynamic HSE MHEV. I expect it in July. By all accounts it should be ideal for my 35 mile mostly motorway commute. Currently in a Lexus CT 200h which is a great little car. For me it is the CVT gearbox that lets it down badly.

    I bought the 2016 model with pretty much all the upgrades. Coming from an Audi I do miss the quattro system. I test drove the S4 and I liked it but it was more money with far less tech and it looked boring. You do have to be careful in the wet, ive had the back end try and overtake me. However get out in the dry with P-Zeros on and its just epic, the shear grip and speed through corners with zero kick at the back.

    • @ashtonmark24
      @ashtonmark24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same, put some decent tyres on it. Pirellis are crap. Got Michelin pilot sport 4s on it at the moment, it's like a different car (and that's chipped with a gearbox flash too and in the wet). Used to scare me with random breakaways in the wet with those Pirellis on, even at low speed...

    It's so much better at driving than the S4. It's even better than the M3, in all honesty, even though it's much cheaper + it's a Jag! Well done, Jaguar, well done. The only competition I'm sensing here (and the only one I haven't driven yet) is Mercedes C-Class... I totally agree with you, PEtrol Ped. Handling and driving-wise it is much better and, indeed, "rewarding" than BMW M3 and Audi S4.

    • @sergeymelkumov4997
      @sergeymelkumov4997 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why in the world you keep mentioning M3's name in vain. This car's competition is BMW 340, S4 and C450. Any of them will eat the Jag alive in the straight lane, add the German build quality, a much bigger rear sit...No chance for the Jag to sell in numbers, not in US for sure.

    Waxing on with infinite accolades spells trouble with a "Audi" target buyer. This is not a true Jag, what with that Mitsu EVO "great front end", or a supercharger rather than displacement..ghost of Ford Mondeo more likely. It is sad that Jaguar couldn't just bring out a line of XKEs and 120's with the electric or hybrid engine only fit for Markley Markle and the driver who wouldn't be king in LA. Really, this isn't a Shaguar in the least....and I hope Audi drivers rot in fake diesel land with high tech gravestones that need more work than Bill Gates P.R faculties in rumour monger land.

    What is the difference between the S and the 35t R-Sport? We don't currently have thE X3 S in North America. I'm interested in this Jag, but i would want an S4 equivalent, i feel like the rport is only like an sline. Also wouldnt an XE R be like an M3 equivalent?? Plz reply thanks!

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi There. Your analogy of R Sport being like Audis S Line is spot on. R Sport is a trim level you can choose with the range of 2.0L Petrol and Diesel engines, the XE S is the only XE with the 3.0L V6 Supercharged engine. An XE S might not quite reach an M3 in terms of performance but it is close. When I last spoke to the guys at Jaguar they weren't aware of plans for an XE R but you never know, that may change !

      Current owner since 2017 - Yes to first (it's a bit binary though, not as good as our Kodiaq). It applies when you put the gearbox in park I believe (as you need to put it in service mode when you change the rear brakes). It doesn't have anti creep, you have to put the e handbrake on at the lights or sit with foot on brake (again not as good as my Kodiaq)

      +Petrol Ped ive never had turbos..whats the bad thing about turbos? its the main thing that stops me from buying an audi..alot of mechanics tell me to stay away from audis, mercedes and bmws

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +matrixlone My S4 is Super Charged just like the XE S, however I did have an Audi TTS for 4 years and that was a Turbocharged 2.0. Never had a problem. Also my current car is a John Cooper Works Mini Roadster with a 1.6 Turbo...EPIC car ! I think turbos used to have a bad reputation in the early days for being unreliable and blowing up. Modern turbos are a different league. Almost every diesel on the market is a turbo and more and more performance cars are going down the route of forced induction. The old problem of lag is not what it used to be either
      Not sure which mechanics you are talking to...Audi, BMW and Merc are some of the most reliable engines going !

      +JoeyandLindsay Its really not all that quick. If you compare it with similar priced cars. 1/4 times I've seen are quite bad. I do believe our S4s would put this to shame.

      @PetrolPed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JoeyandLindsay I think the average driver would get from A to B more quickly in an S4 as the Quattro just means you can put your foot down more without losing grip. The Jag sounds great and is very rewarding through the corners but it could bite you in the ass if you're not careful !

    • @JoeJacksonGT3
      @JoeJacksonGT3 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petrol Ped How was the ride quality in the Jag vs your S4, say in comfort mode? I have the Prestige package on my current S4, and with the 19" wheels, it does make for some pretty harsh moments. Also, one other concern I have about the Jag, is I feel like I'm going backwards in terms of interior quality. Thoughts?

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JoeyandLindsay The ride quality was very good in the Jag. Overall handling was superb actually. You are right, the S4 is pretty firm but I like that. You should try my JCW Mini if you want a firm ride !!
      I don't think many companies can come close to Audi interiors. I liked the dash in the Jag but wasn't a fan of the seats.

  • @alanbutterfield8057
    @alanbutterfield8057 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stick with your Audi Avant S4. I like the Jag but we both love Audi I promise your S4 would leave this for dead with the quattro system. Audi do easy fast speed with little effort. I'm sorry I removed my comment's re the Audi RS6 review but I soon realised I have put myself uncomfortable position as I no-longer work for that company.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem Alan. I have no plans to change the S4 either !

    • @alanbutterfield8057
      @alanbutterfield8057 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once a Audi man always a Audi man and that's the way it is. To be honest what other car would you buy for the money that gives the same feeling and safety levels with the quattro system as you can put the power down in any given set of circumstances.

      No problem. Oh yes, the handling is sublime and the engine is very responsive. Gear changes are instant with the paddles and it drives smooth when you need it to be and stiff when you push it. Probably the best car I've driven in that price range. Visibility isn't the best, but I could live with that.
