A lot of people say it is not about drugs, but more relationships.... I like to interpret this song about drugs..... Just the other day I celebrated 1 year of sobriety and this song was my quitting song ,,, whenever I felt like I would relapse... I would stick this song and repeat and It would help....thank you maynard for helping me sort my life out :)

I relate this song to losing a loved one (be it through a break up or death) and needing something to kill or dull the pain of losing that person and turning to dope. Ultimately, coming to the realization that you're completely dependent on dope and don't use to get high any more but use to feel "normal" because you've grown a wicked tolerance to the drug. Now, you would sell your soul to the devil to make it all go away. How easy would it be if we could just go to your medicine cabinet and drink a magical elixir to kill the pain and kill the ball and chain of drug addiction or just addition in general.

Toxic relationships are very similar to drug addiction. By the time you realise it's ruining you, it's already too late, and you try to pull yourself away but you can't. It only ends up getting worse and worse. And then suddenly one day, something from within shouts "I need to let you go" and you try once again and this time you actually do it. Best feeling ever, that one!

I've been a fan of Tool, A perfect circle, and puscifer for many years and heard a lot of good songs but this song is special to me reminding me of my need to forget someone I loved more than life it's self to some what live a normal life. Thank you god for giving Maynard such an amazing voice It seem like what ever he touches it turns to gold.
I hear the Cure influence in this song. But anything Maynard does , I am fan. And drug addiction and alcoholism was my life for 22 years. ANd I lived and breathed the animation in my reality. My addiction lead me to many scary and unbelievable memories to harness. But through recovery, they are now apart of my story. And seeing this vid, is a great reminder of why I never want to return to addiction.

This song has such a bittersweet story attached to it. Starting out, he is talking about something that takes the pain of loss away. Then slowly you realize that it isn't the person he's trying to get over, but what took away the pain in the first place. MJK does it again. He always has lyrics that you really have to pay attention to to understand the meaning behind it all.

I'd have to agree with some others here that it's about both, but also neither, which is what makes it so good. The first interpretation is that it is about losing someone in some way, and using drugs to kill the pain and destroy the memories. I remember when I was 21, a friend and I stayed up all night on meth, which at that time was still a fairly new drug as far as it being accessible in our area. He was only 19, but had already been a hardcore I.V. opiate addict for 4 years. We had a long conversation that night about why we did drugs, and we both came to the conclusion that we did drugs to forget painful and traumatizing things in our past. We agreed that if we could walk into Walgreen's and buy a magic potion that would give us total amnesia, we would certainly do it and would never need drugs again. So, in realizing that, we also realized that it wasn't just painful memories that we wanted to escape from, and in fact, perhaps it wasn't the memories at all. Rather, it was OURSELVES that we wanted to be rid of, our identities were what were so troubling. So to get to the deeper issue of the song, it's about not being comfortable in your own skin. Thus the reference about being a "shell". When you feel dead inside and you can't cope with life, thus him also wanting to be "buried beside" the person whom he had lost to something akin to death. And when you aren't comfortable with who you are, it's better to be buried next to someone who you felt comfortable with than to survive alone and miserable. And so the potions and elixirs can be anything that make you forget. Forget what it was like to be comfortable around another human being, forget who you are because you hate yourself. For many people, this is the self destructive path of addiction, and many travel it side by side with willingness and compulsion. That is the beauty of great art. When you express your truth, you will discover that so many others feel the same thing, just from different perspectives. I love it when people who don't suffer from addiction can relate so strongly to a song about drugs, because there is such a stigma on addicts, it helps people to realize that we aren't the monsters we are made out to be, but rather we are all people who suffer, we just cope in different ways.
I found this song years ago when I was going through a long drawn out break up. I never thought the pain would go away. The depression was literally crippling. I'm ashamed of how long it took, honestly, but here I am nearly a decade later with several stories to tell about life.

i think the worm represents the pain inside that causes that deep urge to get high. it can't be satisfied. you cant get rid of it, and even when you finally get high enough, its still right there reminding you that it hurts.
my big brother died when I was young and I took it very hard. i sampled many of the devils potions trying to let him go. i was a master in the art of self medication and eventually i got bit. im much older now with 8 years clean. To me, this song is about love and/or drugs... Either are interchangeable. For me personally, it was love. That kind of relationship that is perfect, yet impossible... Doomed, star-crossed, whatever you want to call it. The love that you want but can't have... The love that hurts when you think about it but even after years still tugs on your heart. Shit that you wouldn't want to trade for anything bc it felt amazing and was perfect but at the same time, you wish you had never felt bc it hurts so much to not be with that person. I have a friend with a crack problem who got out of it, it is possible. I dont' know their situation but guided meditation might help, along with a week or two in the mountains. sorry if this is entirely unhelpful.
I tried for 4 months to help. Didn't happen. Took care of their kids, of them and kept the house clean. All for nothing. Some people can't be helped:( I helped myself, and her get off opiates. Myself, by myself. It's strength of character. They're weak! They are the past. Eventually, you gotta focus on you.

Anthony Gilbert I know this post is old, but felt compelled to reply. I struggled with Crack a d heroin both for several years, nothin compares to a speedball rush, so I sort of know your plague. Most people require the slap in the face of rock bottom before they'll even consider waking up, sometimes that's not even enough. I finally decided it was time, my wife, couldn't explain here all the horrors we endured together to cling to our addictions, wasn't ready to quit. I'm still reaching out to her in hopes she will come round, but looks futile. Bottom line is nothing, absolutely nothing will help someone who isn't ready or has had enough utility cutoffs, evictions, empty Christmas trees, ect. It's a difficult journey and must be initiated by the user. Most hope to you, I know your pain.
I mean... Art is subjective, so take from it what it speaks to you. Saying that.... I have always connected this to the memories of a profound connection and intimacy long lost, memories that haunt and invade consciousness. A need to be able to let it go and release the self from the unrelenting memories but never being able to do so. Thus a fantasy of something that could wipe that all away is born from that despair.
I remember showing this song to a close friend of mine. They knew I was going through addiction due to grief. I was told the video & song was disgusting… after cutting ties. You realize a lot of things. I realized she wasn’t solely talking about the song but, me as well. That “I need to let you go” carried a lot of weight for me. 6 years sober ❤

Maynard is a true poet if you truly listen , not hear, listen. This song in particular hits the center of my soul. Needing to let something go yet it seems impossible, it can tear someone inside out. Wish more people would listen to Maynard, he teaches us. Just the very sound of his voice puts me at ease.
I can't stop watching this video. The song is incredible already on it's own, but the art, my God, the art is just amazing. It's definitely very Keenan-esque, and I'm surprised that it wasn't his own art direction that created it. It definitely captures the feel and the vibe of the song perfectly. And those little jumping/dancing clouds, man those little guys just rock out lol. Ian, whoever you are, if you're reading this, please keep doing what you do :)

This song has such a bittersweet story attached to it. Starting out, he is talking about something that takes the pain of loss away. Then slowly you realize that it isn't the person he's trying to get over, but what took away the pain in the first place. MJK does it again. He always has lyrics that you really have to pay attention to to understand the meaning behind it all.

I'd have to agree with some others here that it's about both, but also neither, which is what makes it so good. The first interpretation is that it is about losing someone in some way, and using drugs to kill the pain and destroy the memories. I remember when I was 21, a friend and I stayed up all night on meth, which at that time was still a fairly new drug as far as it being accessible in our area. He was only 19, but had already been a hardcore I.V. opiate addict for 4 years.
We had a long conversation that night about why we did drugs, and we both came to the conclusion that we did drugs to forget painful and traumatizing things in our past. We agreed that if we could walk into Walgreen's and buy a magic potion that would give us total amnesia, we would certainly do it and would never need drugs again. So, in realizing that, we also realized that it wasn't just painful memories that we wanted to escape from, and in fact, perhaps it wasn't the memories at all. Rather, it was OURSELVES that we wanted to be rid of, our identities were what were so troubling.
So to get to the deeper issue of the song, it's about not being comfortable in your own skin. Thus the reference about being a "shell". When you feel dead inside and you can't cope with life, thus him also wanting to be "buried beside" the person whom he had lost to something akin to death. And when you aren't comfortable with who you are, it's better to be buried next to someone who you felt comfortable with than to survive alone and miserable.
And so the potions and elixirs can be anything that make you forget. Forget what it was like to be comfortable around another human being, forget who you are because you hate yourself. For many people, this is the self destructive path of addiction, and many travel it side by side with willingness and compulsion. That is the beauty of great art. When you express your truth, you will discover that so many others feel the same thing, just from different perspectives. I love it when people who don't suffer from addiction can relate so strongly to a song about drugs, because there is such a stigma on addicts, it helps people to realize that we aren't the monsters we are made out to be, but rather we are all people who suffer, we just cope in different ways.

i think the worm represents the pain inside that causes that deep urge to get high. it can't be satisfied. you cant get rid of it, and even when you finally get high enough, its still right there reminding you that it hurts.

To me, this song is about love and/or drugs... Either are interchangeable.
For me personally, it was love. That kind of relationship that is perfect, yet impossible... Doomed, star-crossed, whatever you want to call it.
The love that you want but can't have... The love that hurts when you think about it but even after years still tugs on your heart.
Shit that you wouldn't want to trade for anything bc it felt amazing and was perfect but at the same time, you wish you had never felt bc it hurts so much to not be with that person.
Same goes with drugs... they make you feel amazing til they are gone or you fuck up your whole life...

I have a friend with a crack problem who got out of it, it is possible. I dont' know their situation but guided meditation might help, along with a week or two in the mountains. sorry if this is entirely unhelpful.
I tried for 4 months to help. Didn't happen. Took care of their kids, of them and kept the house clean. All for nothing. Some people can't be helped:( I helped myself, and her get off opiates. Myself, by myself. It's strength of character. They're weak! They are the past. Eventually, you gotta focus on you.

Anthony Gilbert I know this post is old, but felt compelled to reply. I struggled with Crack a d heroin both for several years, nothin compares to a speedball rush, so I sort of know your plague. Most people require the slap in the face of rock bottom before they'll even consider waking up, sometimes that's not even enough. I finally decided it was time, my wife, couldn't explain here all the horrors we endured together to cling to our addictions, wasn't ready to quit. I'm still reaching out to her in hopes she will come round, but looks futile. Bottom line is nothing, absolutely nothing will help someone who isn't ready or has had enough utility cutoffs, evictions, empty Christmas trees, ect. It's a difficult journey and must be initiated by the user. Most hope to you, I know your pain.

I mean... Art is subjective, so take from it what it speaks to you. Saying that.... I have always connected this to the memories of a profound connection and intimacy long lost, memories that haunt and invade consciousness. A need to be able to let it go and release the self from the unrelenting memories but never being able to do so. Thus a fantasy of something that could wipe that all away is born from that despair.

I remember showing this song to a close friend of mine. They knew I was going through addiction due to grief. I was told the video & song was disgusting… after cutting ties. You realize a lot of things. I realized she wasn’t solely talking about the song but, me as well. That “I need to let you go” carried a lot of weight for me.
