Reznor and Maynard is like one of those dream teams you put together in your head but never expect to see actually happen.
Except they are into the same stuff and are both long time Rock Stars. It is nice to see them collaborate.
Well, it did happened, called Tapeworm, yet didn't conclude into a record.
frankly I don't think they were far off from a collaborative sound with this song. It takes two to tango they say, this would be around where they would meet in the middle creatively, I feel they can revisit the subject looking back at this sound

Closest I got to seeing them as a unit was when A Perfect Circle opened for NIN on Fragile tour in 2000.
Had the honor to see A Perfect Circle open for NIN back in 2001, my god it was amazing, can't believe its been that long ago, I know this is Puscifer but had to mention it APC with NIN

I saw them in 2003 in Orlando...fucking unforgettable! I was right up front and in heaven.

The first time I heard this I had no idea Reznor collabed and I instantly recognized him. I love this so much!
For me it's better when it's more of a surprise. This sounds slightly like Nails. But, it's also very consistent with Puscifer's sound.

The heavy beat is similar to the song "The Wretched"
The synth bass line in the verse is VERY simillar to the remixed version of the wretched. And also the short guitar fill in the verse is a variation of the one on the wretched. Luckily the chorus and outtro is different from any NIN I know of.

Ash Bartlett Trent put out a 36 track album called Ghosts. All instrumental, very relaxing to fall asleep to.
Matt's Demo Band Official agreed! I think that's probably exactly how it was done. Granted there were two other guys contributing, one of which Trent still works with on soundtracks I believe, so they probably contributed a bit to the instrumental aspect as well.

It is from Tapeworm. I used to have the original recording on my old computer, along with a few other tracks like Perfect Enemy (now called Passive) and a few others.

There is this long awaited exhale that I can take knowing that my awesome brother-in-law has the same kind of affinity for this type of incredible music that I fell in love with in early High School. I do not believe that you need to "forget" the person you lost. Do what you can to honour their memory, even if it's just to smile when you find a note written by him or her, or an old photograph. I think it helps one to heal.

That has to have been the reason they disbanded 'Tapeworm'. I can't understand why else they wouldn't release anything they created together with that project. It's the only reason this song even exists in the first place; a Trent and Maynard collab, that Maynard just kinda released years later.

Maynard James Keenan gave me chills in 2013 on 10000 days
Unfortunately Trent felt the quality of the music they did wasn't good enough. That paired with Maynard becoming busy with APC which had just started. Debut album, touring etc. Then Lateralus with Tool. APC again and all the touring with those bands. Time wasn't on their side. They seem to not have wanted to force it. Maynard or Trent, I believe said they might collab again one day. Who knows. APC took 14 years so it's still possible.
I know Trent has said that in interviews and I'm sure it's part of the reason. But he also mentions commerce as a factor. Reading between the lines, I reckon it had more to do with distribution. Trent being, very involved with Apple and Maynard, at the time, being very opposed to digital distribution.
The biggest factor was legal issues with their respective labels.

The good ol' Tapeworm Project with Atticus Ross, Danny Lohner and Phil Anselmo. Could have been awesome. I'm sure some of it is but yeah, Trent had said in an interview that it was mediocre at best.

The original unreleased 1999 “Vacant” version, had music written by Danny Lohner, rearranged by Charlie Clouser, with lyrics and melody written by Keenan. The chorus and backing vocals were written by Reznor. Trent gets all the credit but he only wrote the chorus, folks. This is a Puscifer version that Trent didn’t sing on.

Trent builds his own synthesizers which he uses to define the sound of NIN. One could be forgiven for thinking that Maynard did vocals for a Reznor track. The guitar solo at the end of the track definitely sounds like Reznor.
