@@willn8664 From what I've heard, that was a scheduling issue. Sean already had quite a few other projects on production and didn't have enough time to rehearse the choreographies, otherwise, you can be sure the big 3 would have loved to give him more screentime (and fight).
Yeah my mom is saying the same thing I am believe it or not, He's been on her soap opera, Bold and the Beautiful for the last 10 years which is hilarious as it is the exact opposite as his character Mike Barnes.
He arguably deserves a special TYPE of respect (I do not want to say MORE respect, respect is not something you can quantify exactly like wattage in a light bulb) that very few if any other actors have gotten. It was A LOT that he was able to do that role AT ALL because he was in the hospital recovering from an almost fatal injury and he was not fully recovered from surgery and he disobeyed his doctors by leaving the hospital early and leaving the hospital AT ALL was a huge health risk and on top of that he did ALMOST ALL OF HIS OWN STUNTS which is rare even for a perfectly healthy actor who did not get badly hurt. The ONLY stunt he refused to do was almost getting hit by a train for fear of getting killed by a train but ALL of the fighting and action other than that was with NO STUNT DOUBLE. It is rare for an actor to do all or almost all of their own stunts and it is rare for an actor who is badly hurt and not fully recovered from surgery to leave the hospital early and risk their health and he did BOTH of those "rare" things AT THE EXACT SAME TIME.
@@gorgo5418 I wish that he had done some action adventure movies as a martial artist back in the early 1990s as characters who are technically NOT Mike Barnes but look like him (due to being same actor) and have about the same level of martial arts ability as Mike Barnes but as a good guy (similar to how in the first 2 Shootfighter movies Bolo Yeung was "Shingo" and about equal to Chong Li in fighting ability but was a good guy).
That actor should have gotten roles as a HERO in action adventure movies back then too. Imagine a GOOD GUY with the same ABILITIES as Mike Barnes but NOT the same character.
I'm blown away by how nice and friendly he was during that interview when he was young and then was able to play that intense character. Just unbelievable talent.

And in the last episode, after venting to Daniel about how his shop was burned down, you can see him breakdown when he mentions his wife, who must have been traumatized to see the legacy of her father getting burnt to ashes.
he was pretty unhinged during the final fights lol, he literally 1 shot those 2 senseis johnny had been fighting with instantly. I was hoping johnny would say something like, this is the angriest badass ive ever seen.
I love that he wasn’t automatically on side from the get go, and that he just popped up in that scene to get the payback on Daniel etc. that whole sequence was funny and good to watch.
The actor has been trying to get back into this show desperately for over 2 years and he has been going nuts in the gym so that he could reprise his role as a badass. He has an awesome physique for his age and is stronger than the Chozen and Johnny actors now even if he was not back in 1989. He is BUFFED.

Man, seeing all the "villains" from the Karate Kid series pop up in season 5. Best season yet. Mike Barnes was such a great villain character back then. Hope this leads to more work for Sean Kanan. I could definitely see him in a lot of different roles.
The only villain left are Ned Randall and Col. Dugan (Michael Ironsides) from KK4. Since the writers did a much better job with Silver and Chosen, maybe they could find some way to incorporate Julie (Hillary Swank) and either Dugan and or Ned - and actually make it good. Julie, who suffered from anger issues, could appear in one episode talking to the students about how karate and Mr. Miyagi changed her life.

Sometimes a movie can be bad overall but still have a few really cool characters portrayed by really good actors. For example STAR WARS is superior to its "wannabe" BATTLESTAR GALACTICA in almost every aspect BUT Dirk Benedict and Richard Hatch had more charsima as Starbuck and Apollo than most of the Star Wars characters had.
KK3 was indeed weaker than the first 2 movies but guess what? 30+ years later down the road, KK3 gave the best plot into Cobra Kai. The way they enhanced the story around everyone just makes KK3 was a good movie overall.
I met Sean in 93 or 94, he was playing Virtua Fighter in the arcade at Six Flags Mall in Grand Prairie, TX. It was kinda surreal, he was like the only person there, I kept saying to myself this guy looks familiar. Then it dawned on me he played Mike Barnes, I think during that time he was doing Soap Opera. It's great to see Sean Kanan again to reprise Mike Barnes on Cobra Kai. After that martial arts demonstration I just saw. He could have played Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat (1995).
Real talk, Mike is one of the best characters on the show. Not only is he one of the best written former rivals of Daniel on the show, he stole every scene he was in.
Pretty awesome how the director had a little talk with him while waiting in line to audition. John Avildsen could have sent everyone else home right then and there!

He is actually STRONGER now than he was in 1989. He was kind of lanky then though even then he had a streamlined musculature and was certainly stronger than Ralph Macchio (which does not prove much really) but he worked out so hard in the gym over the past 2 years that in an arm wrestling match 2022 Sean Kanan would easily beat 1989 Sean Kanan.
One reason that Sean Kanan did NOT do a shirtless scene in KK3 like Chozen did in KK2 was because he had had surgery and had scars from it. Sometimes when an ACTOR has a scar it is made an actual part of the story. My favorite example of this was when the late River Phoenix was portraying a boy version of Indiana Jones in the 3rd movie of that series and he accidentally hit himself in the chin with the whip in the exact same spot as Harrison Ford's chin scar. Since Sean Kanan has a scarred torso from surgery they should make that a part of the story. How about Silver and Kreese tortured him brutally as punishment for losing to Daniel or something?
I used to get him confused with the actor that played Cody on Step by Step, mainly after an episode where Cody got into a bar fight. They have a similar look and skillset.
Now those karate moves just reminded me of Tanner Buchanan during his rehearsal. First time I seen him, I thought he was gonna be the Next Karate’s Bad Boy or something. 😄
Mike was never a psycho. just a solid business man. he was paid to bully some one for a literal fortune. he was going to get 50 percent of cobra kai which as we have all seen, could have been worth millions. Just a good employee doing his job.
I remember Sean messaged me once on Instagram as I like to share & give tribute posts to my favorite actors I shared a Mike Barnes post from Karate Kid and he replied saying thanks pal that really made my day 🧡 it lifted my spirits cause I was having a hard time.
it was mind blowing seeing mike barnes have his life turn around(and around again in the end of S5 lol). what a great arc for a great character. KK3 was considered one of the worst films in the franchise next to TNKK. Sean and Thomas really made that movie ,nonetheless.

im glad they managed to make barnes a good man.. what i wanted though was more explanation in what happened between him and silver after the events of karate kid 3.. all we got was i haven't seen or heard from him in years..
Same here. I wanted a more in depth look into those events. Also, who was he before KK3? Why was he so filled with rage? What happened with his other henchmen Dennis and Snake after he lost to Daniel in KK3? Hoping this gets explored in season 6.
I want him back for season 6 with a more in depth role.
Personally I think The bad boy of karate did a fantastic job in Kobra Kai hope he has a bigger role next season

He is actually STRONGER now than he was in 1989. He was kind of lanky then though even then he had a streamlined musculature and was certainly stronger than Ralph Macchio (which does not prove much really) but he worked out so hard in the gym over the past 2 years that in an arm wrestling match 2022 Sean Kanan would easily beat 1989 Sean Kanan.

One reason that Sean Kanan did NOT do a shirtless scene in KK3 like Chozen did in KK2 was because he had had surgery and had scars from it.
Sometimes when an ACTOR has a scar it is made an actual part of the story. My favorite example of this was when the late River Phoenix was portraying a boy version of Indiana Jones in the 3rd movie of that series and he accidentally hit himself in the chin with the whip in the exact same spot as Harrison Ford's chin scar.
Since Sean Kanan has a scarred torso from surgery they should make that a part of the story. How about Silver and Kreese tortured him brutally as punishment for losing to Daniel or something?
He went shirtless on B&B a couple of weeks ago no problem.

I used to get him confused with the actor that played Cody on Step by Step, mainly after an episode where Cody got into a bar fight. They have a similar look and skillset.
As much as we all poke fun of Hollywood, good eye by Avildsen. Kid had the look.
Now those karate moves just reminded me of Tanner Buchanan during his rehearsal. First time I seen him, I thought he was gonna be the Next Karate’s Bad Boy or something. 😄

Mike was never a psycho. just a solid business man. he was paid to bully some one for a literal fortune. he was going to get 50 percent of cobra kai which as we have all seen, could have been worth millions. Just a good employee doing his job.
Man I loved his role as Deacon Sharpe on Bold lol. One of the greatest acting talents.

Barnes' return was probably the biggest disappointment of this season. His story wasn't bad, but he was criminally underused.
Take up an activity or sport people, Karate, tennis, football, etc. You will age gracefully like this man, woo he still looks good :D

I remember Sean messaged me once on Instagram as I like to share & give tribute posts to my favorite actors I shared a Mike Barnes post from Karate Kid and he replied saying thanks pal that really made my day 🧡 it lifted my spirits cause I was having a hard time.

it was mind blowing seeing mike barnes have his life turn around(and around again in the end of S5 lol). what a great arc for a great character. KK3 was considered one of the worst films in the franchise next to TNKK. Sean and Thomas really made that movie ,nonetheless.
