Oral History of 'The Karate Kid' with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka | Rotten Tomatoes

- Back in 1984, a scrappy kid from New Jersey named Daniel LaRusso moved cross-country to California's San Fernando Valley and squared off against a gang of bullies with the help of his apartment building's Okinawan maintenance man. More than 30 years later, the film's legacy lives on in the TH-cam Premium original series 'Cobra Kai,' which flips the script and asks, "What if Daniel was the bad guy all along?" 'Cobra Kai' stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka recently sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to reminisce about the original film, talking about their relationships with the late Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) and Martin Kove (John Kreese), their casting auditions, and what it was like filming the iconic climactic fight. Thankfully, the two remain friends to this day, and their love for the franchise still runs strong.

Ralph Macchio the worlds oldest teenager.
There's good and bad to that. Dick Clark was but suddenly aged 25 years in 6 months...
It must be the lotion. (Watch bill burrs skit on lotion)
@Gary Pastorchik funny. Highly inaccurate.

Much love and respect to Pat Morita. Gone, but never forgotten.

@@kbanghart I don't think that the original movie would've be as successful with someone else in that role. Probably wouldn't have gotten a sequel.
@@joemckim1183 I agree 💯
Ralph Macchio is 57 freaking years old here and looks 33, just like when he did the 1st karate kid in his 20s yet played a young teen. Genetics is great for some people.
Bob Billings he looks his age
Well evan, he may not look 33, but he does absolutely not look 57, but definitely younger.
Bob Billings your right, sorry!
I love kobra kai, but I would like to see the martial arts world to expand to bring some other appearances from 80s stars like don dragon Wilson, Ted Jan Roberts, even chuck Norris. Even if it’s for a one off appearance, karate judge, teacher passing by, or cop self defense instructor
james rowell great idea
Johnny's reaction to ''sweep the leg'' is tremendous. I think this is when it finally hits me that Johnny is not all bad. A badass guy with a code. haha
Yeah Kreese was always the bad guy from the start
Remember, there's no such thing as a bad student only bad teacher
A man must have a code
Yeah and he congratulates Daniel after the win.
@Chris Madison true. Daniel had that East Coast chip on the shoulder attitude and made things worse for himself like when he turned the hose on Johnny at the Halloween dance and then ran away, shower curtain and all. Of course they beat him up. He asked for it.
William Zabka is an absolutely brilliant in Cobra Kai. No shade to the rest of the cast but he makes the whole thing for me.
For me it's definitely him but Ralph is cool too.
Love the 1st episode when he kicks arse
Yes The reason being with the karate kid original film done in 1984 no one really knew nothing about Johnny played by William Zabka.
@@chantelleroberts9024 good point
Hoping alli is in CK3
I couldn't believe how good this Cobra Kai is.
The script is fucking cringe worthy and the show reeks of psuedo-progressive. On top of that, none of the young actors are appealing. Even though the nose honk by Daniel is cheesy as hell, the series should have ended with Part II.
Being a kid of the 80's ... I give Cobra Kai two thumbs up as well.
I grew up with the original and not knowing much about this show I brushed it off. I finally gave it a shot and was amazed at how much I love it.
Me too! It's so very good!
scabab i think the both gonna team up on season 3 to crash down cobra cay what do you all think
I still get choked up at the end when Mr Miyagi nods his head with that half smile when Danny gets that trophy...
That final shot of Miyagi at the end is awesome.

After cheating with that kick to the face. Yeah… great win 🙄

I always love that part the end when Johnny ran towards Daniel saying “You alright Larusso..” That part was when Johnny finally acknowledged the hardwork and dedication Daniel and he definitely gained his respect. This one of the 80’s great film where people can learn so many valuable lessons in life in every part of the scenes.
I agree. I hope they team together to beat Kreese. I love seeing them get along.

I am thinking that Johnny would benefit so much from a bit of Mr. Miyagi’s wisdom. If he becomes friends with Daniel and they train together, and share the secrets of their specific styles with each other, they would both benefit.

I agree his whole attitude and vibe was very inspirational and calm
@@eskanda3434 exactlly
up there with yoda for me...
Indeed. Kept the Bushido code alive!
Mr. Myagi is one of the best characters ever created in my opinion. Perfectly written and perfectly delivered.
Embarrassing caricature of asian people. You could not catch a japanese person trying to catch a fly with a chopstick. Oh, yes, he was supposed to be a japanese american. My bad.
@@sifugurusensei He was hardly supposed to be the embodiment or the representation of all Japanese people. Like anyone in their right mind would think that this was meant to imply that all Japanese people catch flies with chopsticks.
And now that Daniel is teaching the same techniques in the Cobra Kai series, he must now be an embarrassing caricature of all white people. Like any white person would wax a car that way...
@@sifugurusensei Actually, Pat Morita's portrayal of Miyagi brought a lot of dignity and charm to the Western image of the Japanese, that had been so denigrated over past decades by embarrassing caricatures (ala Mickey Rooney as Mr Yunioshi, etc) following WWII.
@@melchiorao9759 dont get me wrong. I think miagi has a charming character but as far as representing japanese people accurately, its hollywood representation. There are manners regarding chopsticks. I got scolded for even sticking a chopstick in a bowl of rice. And really its unsanitary to catch a fly with chopstick. Meanwhile that crane kick isnt a karate move. Having said that, with all its flaws, I liked the film for its underdog story. I did like the sequence that shows how wax on wax off could be though I dont think you ever really see daniel san using those in the tournaments.
*"No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher.!"* Im so getting sent to the office for using this quote at school...
Who would’ve known after 30+ years so many would actually end up rooting for Johnny Lawrence?
I was always rooting for Johnny.
It’s a little crazy huh? He was the stereotypical 80s bully. But now the whole thing can be viewed through a different lens. It’s really amazing.
I think HIMYM has A LOT to do with that
@Mike Russo Is that because Daniel stole your La at the beginning of your last name?
Johnny Lawrence plays the same role as Mr. Myagi in the first season. He's a handyman living in a rundown apartment complex and protects and trains Miguel from his bullies and wins the All Valley Championship in the end.
These 2 are very generous with each other. It’s weird, but satisfying, to see them so friendly.
Agreed!
Ralph won't shut up
Their fame and success in life is largely dependant on the success of the Karate Kid movie which they worked on together. If they never made that movie together, there's no guarantee they would have ever become famous. I guess they are somewhat indebted to each other in a way.
Can't wait until they finally become Bros in cobra kai
Two seasons on TH-cam Red and I never heard from it. Two days on Netflix without any prior advertising and I already binged it.
Ikr???
I remember seeing the ads on TH-cam. You couldn't get away from it. Were you using TH-cam at all in 2018?
Sinejorine bruh same
Same on Netflix watch the whole thing season 1 and 2 in 2 days
Bring on season 3 can’t wait
Lol...it's a pretty good show. Need to do a season 3. Long overdue
Some of these actors in movies that try to kill each other on film are actually close friends in life. It's good to see that they support each to deliver the final product to the audience.
Just like in real life William is good friends with Martin Kove.
What is easy to forget is how much preparation and time goes into these fights and how in tune you must be to punch each other without actually hurting each other. So, the actors playing the characters fighting in the movie will naturally spend a lot of time together and in the course of that become friends. And I totally agree! I love seing those kind of friendships!
The way Mr Miyagi looked at Daniel at the end of the movie along with that music ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye lol 😢
I did boo bee! You gotta problem with that?
bee boo and you’re the one complaining about everything
bee boo no you wouldn’t and it doesn’t matter if I gave myself a thumbs up
Okay you two. We can’t have this movie happening again!
Mr miyagi is the best teacher and very cool.
Fun fact: Ralph Macchio is now 5 years older than Pat Morita was at the first Karate Kid movie.
🤯
Macchio is in late 50s, and the guy looks like mid 30s...
No es posible!!!
That still means his character would be close to 10 years younger than he was though
That's just crazy! I still remember watching the first movie when I was 9.
I just watched Karate Kid 1 at a movie theater in Hanford Ca. It was a throwback. I took my wife and son. When the movie was over, it got a standing ovation from all the adults that grew up watching this movie.
Where at in Hanford?

Unless you watch Bruce Lee movies cuz when you watch Bruce Lee movies it makes Karate Kid look pretty freaking stupid. I think my biggest problem with it was that Danny was asking for a beating. But I will admit Karate Kid was the first one I watched and fell in love with martial arts.
Lmao Americans clapping at a cinema screen is never not funny
Not gonna lie -- seeing these two together being so cool with each other -- after growing up only seeing them as enemies in an epic film --- is making my heart SO happy.

Cobra Kai is amazing. I'm totally dumbfounded how well made it is. Zabka is really an amazing actor. Macchio is good as well but Zabka steals the show.
I totally agree. I am hoping Zabka makes a huge comeback as an actor. I have had a crush on him for 36 years...lol! I have even thought "wouldn't it be amazing for Zabka to host SNL?" I truly love that man. Like Cobra Kai...my love for Zabka never dies!
i think Macchio is a better actor but Johnny's character is probably the most entertaining.
Nah to me they're both about the same.
@@TheJoaopinto11 Yeah, Macchio was actually nominated for an oscar along with Pat Morita.
That's because Cobra Kai centers around Johnny (aka William Zabka).
Awesome to see these guys together after 30+ years! Time has gone so quickly

Yep... and it's exactly what the younger generation doesn't realize until it happens to them. You never think you're going to be 30 years older and when you realize how much time has passed it's a shock! Its crazy because you still feel young!
Yep, 35 years
William Zabka is so beautiful with a beautiful personality. He was a gorgeous boy when he was young, and now he's a gorgeous man. He owns the character of Johnny! I can't wait to see more of him in future seasons of Cobra Kai.

I'm 39 and I still find myself getting the chills anticipating the crane kick. Then wanting to jump out my chair and celebrate when he lands the kick. Such a great movie!
lol dude i do it EVERYTIME
What I find amazing is that Zabka feints, then goes in, so Macchio had to hold the kick or the timing would've been screwed up. They probably rehearsed it that way but with the crowd pumping them up and everything I could see them having to shoot that a couple times.
It was an illegal kick
No one has ever aged better than Ralph Macchio.

I still Love it when Mr. Miyagi comes out of nowhere and kicks the skeleton crew's asses. Boooom! He was like a guardian angel.
And the kick to the guy's nuts is the best shot.
Best scene for me is when Johnny hands the trophy to LaRusso himself, "Your alright LaRusso, great match" just perfect!.
Sometimes it’s surreal to me that we all went mental over the original Karate Kid and it was just a high school karate tournament 😂. But it was so epic.
The best movie
Hoosiers was just a high school basketball tournament too... ;)
It had a ton of heart
Probably one of the best interviews I have seen with the two of them. Both because of what they shared with viewers and because they both seem to be genuinely happy and good friends. Very cool.
@Nicolas DeFranco That would be awesome to see a remake where Macchio plays Glaser and Zabka plays soul....I know they did a film remake, I am talking a Cobra Kai type series because the chemistry between Macchio and Zabka is intensely genuine.
Everytime I see the ending Scene of the original Karate Kid when Johnny hands Daniel the trophe and says, "You're not bad LaRusso," it shows me that Johnny isn't that bad of a person.
What it shows is that Kreese had a lot to do with Johnny being a bully
Johnny is my favorite character ever written I think.
Horse shit. He was an asshole for 99% of the film, both with and away from Kreese. People on IMDB and TH-cam continue to try their hand at revisionist history, but it won't hold. I understand it's a marketing gimmick, but people take it too far by coming up with other bullshit theories like Larusso was the real bully. But that's all it is...bullshit. Period.
We first see some hope for Johnny by his reaction when Kreese tells him to sweep Daniel's leg. Johnny didn't want to win unless it was honestly.
Johnny is a lot like Draco Malfoy, not naturally a bully, but taught to be one by the adult mentors around them. In Malfoy's case it was his dad, and with Johnny it was Kreese.
William Zabka deserves an Emmy for Cobra Kai.Absolutely fantastic acting performance, especially in season 2

Very nice, It's refreshing to see humble and well spoken actors in this day and age.
Both of these guys were criminally underutilized by Hollywood after KK.
But why?
@@fns4158 I guess it's a case of standard case of identity disorder. Some actors are unable to get away from their roles as a certain character.
For example, josh Radnor is barely cast anymore cos he is forever remembered as Ted Mosby by the fans of the show.
@@tanmaydeshpande So even if they are talented, they cannot "get away" from the shadow of the role that made them famous?

Could imagine many people saying Oh look thats Johnny Lawerence from KK have you seen that awesome film etc etc and then the focus of their new character is marred by their very best one.
Too bad the movie wasn't called Karate Kid Kicker!
Karate Kid, E.T. And The Outsiders, my favorite movie's of that time. I will always remember the 80's the music the movie's my high school graduation etc...what a magical time for me.
The Goonies?

By the sound of things I was little when you were a teen. Loved the 80s too though. My teens came next decade. Those teen years can be a really beautiful time. When you’re still young enough to believe anything is possible and old enough to feel it all on the horizon.
I'm a dad now and I kinda proudly tell my daughter that scenes from this classic movie were filmed very near our home in the Valley.
"The Karate Kid" is one of the greatest movie ever, "Cobra Kai" is one of the greatest series ever
I think that if Cobra Kai had happened 10 years ago, Zabka would have exploded into Hollywood. After watching every episode of both seasons, I see him in a totally new light. He should have huge
He didnt want it. He could have been huge after KK, but he chose another path.
He is more to behind the scene
Ralph talks about Pat Morita just like Danny talks about Mr. Miyagi in Cobra Kai. Their chemistry worked so well.
These two have such a bond. It's adorable.
I actually fixed my broken leg with that Mr miagi trick where he rubs his hands, mumbles something and touches the broken leg. Doctors were baffled.
Mr Miagi thank you.
Great example of perfect casting....we cannot even imagine anyone else in any of the roles, from Miagi all the way down to Daniel's mother. Great work in casting.
The Karate Kid is pretty much a perfect movie.
This is one of those times the perfect actors fell in the perfect place and thank God they did, we are all quite blessed thanks to it
In my mind they will always stay the same age as back in the movie.... crazy to watch them as grown up adults / old people
This was a great movie they don’t make them like this anymore the 80s had some of the best most iconic Hollywood blockbusters ever.
This movie was the first date my mom and dad ever went on. Thanks, Karate Kid 😂
Edit: Some people have asked if they are still together - They married a few years after this and had 6 daughters in total! They were married for 23 years before my mom passed away 9 years ago ❤

When Ralph says he may be seeing Shue soon.......does he mean season 3? We will see!
Yes. I think the season 2 cliffhanger pretty much spelled that out anyway but Ralph's words here are just another confirmation of that. There's no way they'd tease Ali the way they did in season 2 and then not bring her in. Chances are she's already either A) Signed a contract for season 3 or B) Gave them some kind of commitment to it.

It's also no secret that Elizabeth does not like Ralph, so you could cut the tension with a knife when she was brought up fondly by William. Ralph tried to hold it in, but it was all over his face and all in his tone.
I kinda want to see Hillary Swank’s character from Next Karate Kid. I don’t know, I think it’ll be cool to see her and Daniel reminisce about Mr. Miyagi.

Yeah, the original movie trilogy was rooting for the jerk. Wonder what could have been of Johnny if Mr. Miyagi had been his teacher instead of Kreese.
Nah, it just made me equally support both. Both are essentially the same person. Daniel always has his guard up, just like Johnny.
Johnny was never a bad guy to begin with, he just had an evil sensei who tried to imprint on him some bad lessons. He struggled a lot through his life, while Daniel was a goody guy with a great master and made a big career. Daniel in theory achieved a perfect life, but cracks start to appear: he grew complacent and lost his way after Mr Miyagi died, his children aren't exactly the greatest and his grudge against Johnny overwhelms his better judgement. Opening the dojo to train multiple students was also against rules, because it was supposed to be a one on one close bond training.

With a joyful heart I hail the "Cobra Kai" tv series, 30 years later taking us to the Karate Kid saga once again; emotion is overwhelming!!! My prayers for "Pat Morita", God rest his soul, in loving memory.
I'm a huge fan of The Karate Kid. About 7 years ago I was at a take out chicken spot in Los Angeles, with a buddy. There weren't many people there, except in line with us was Ralph Macchio. I decided to speak to him and tell hime I was a big fan. He politely said "thank you." My friend and I then got our food and sat down at one of the few tables in the place. A minute or two later, Daniel-san sat down next to us. We all started chatting about playoff hockey, him being from New York, and him being a fan of the NJ Devils...just regular guy stuff. He told us he was on his way to a party but wasn't sure about the food situation, so he decided to stop in for a bite to eat before hand. It was just chatting with a normal dude. The point of all of this is to say that, sometimes you get a chance to meet a public person and they are really cool. Ralph Macchio was that type of guy; down to earth and friendly. One of the coolest experiences for a me as big fan of The Karate Kid.
Cobra Kai is the best story continution ever. Using the exact same actors is just icing on the cake.

Two real world heroes. No special powers required. The new generation need to learn that human beings can be super without unworldly powers. Training. Hard work. Success.
Cobra Kai is the show this generation and time needs.
I Love The crane kick with Ralph macchio and William zabka in the original Karate Kid.....And the scene too with at the end original Karate kid.....When Johnny gives him the winning trophy....He Says your All Right Larusso........
I like the parking lot scene when Kress throw the trophy down and myagi says let the boy go and he turns around and Kress punches the window when myagi moves and Kress’s hand is bleeding and he throws another punch and his other hands starts to bleed. I like this because this is real blood not faking it. They both took it to the next level.
William Zabka always played the bully or villain character in many of his movies. I remember him in "Going Back to School."

Your the best around , nothings gonna ever keep u down 😂😂 so cheesey but great 80s nostalgia
7:48 Ralph dropping spoilers for season 3 Haha
Haha same saying Ali will be back lol
@@juandoe195 she is.....
Like it wasn’t obvious in the closing scene of season 2....
@@GerasimosPapaspiratos she did
Karate Kid has always been my favorite movie. I was a lovestruck teen so in love with Ralph Macchio. Pat Morita was perfect for that movie and so were all the characters-they all fit the parts so well! Cobra Kai was the best idea they could have had in reliving the Karate Kid... I love it!
Cobra kai is very awesome and way above my expectations for this tv show because of the legacy the movie left us. But it is only bringing it to the next level greatness with all that nostalgia adapted to the new era....
And i really can't wait any longer for season 3. To find out what's next. I do t wanna spoil anything but i watched the whole series twice so far and i can't stop thinking about what's next.
Please make many more seasons. This is a very great show, very refreshing and everything is perfectly on point.
Props to all people involved.
Thank you
Something about when Ralph says the director told him to take some karate lessons. Made me flash back to moments in my own life where i received really good news.
7:50 He knows she’s coming for season 3 of Cobra Kai.
Everyone says they had a crush on Daniel but who had a crush on Johnny??? 😍🙋🏻
I'm rooting for Johnny now.... Cobra Kai!
I've always had a crush on William/Johnny
I had a crush on both of them.
Neil Patrick Harris
@Alison Twist Had a crush on Ralph then when I was 11. Still have a crush on him now at 40. He looks amazing for someone near 60.
Machio was awesome as the "karate kid," but Zabka made the movie great. He just made the perfect king karate bully. He really did an outstanding job in that film, and deserves a lot of credit for making the movie as great as it was.
I just cant believe that my favorite childhood movie is still in action today! I took karate lessons because of Daniel Larusso! I got to a purple belt lol but in my mind i was a black belt.
I'm also taking karate. I go to an Okinawan karate school, but it's nothing like Cobra Kai was.
Purple is still quite impressive...
Movies like karate kid and blood sport are why I started doing adaptive martial arts I have cerebral palsy and use a wheelchair so all of the techniques I do are adapted
I never really liked Daniel in the original karate kid that much. I don't know why, I always just preferred Johnny. So happy that Cobra Kai focuses on Johnny's good side
E
Why dont like ralph?
Cobra Kai.... the only show I care about on youtube originals. My wife and I love this show and the originals.
love 80 😣
I grew up on Karate Kid
But I don't know the series Cobra Kai
Sorry but who it is Pat Morita ?
Where can I watch the first and second seasons? How many episodes were there each season
and when do you think the third season will be?
I hope I didn't ask for more 😂
glad to see both actors look healthy and in shape
William Zabka and his cool personality makes you respect his acting even more because you can easily hate the guy for the character he has played in The Karate Kid franchise. Cobra Kai has done wonders for him in showing us how nice he is.
This show and the return of Daniel and Johnny couldn't come at a better time, you guy's are spot on with the kids the attitude and the problems these kids now are exhibiting....You are shining the perfect light on the disconnect and disrespect they show not only to the parents and their friends but the to total lack of understanding what respect for themselves and other people is. I am so proud of the cast and film makers for their courage and commitment to bring some of the main issues others are afraid to address to light and I know it may not mean a whole lot to some people in Hollywood to hear this but thank you guys for this, for being real hero's to look up to When I was a kid I was Daniel and that movie helped me get through many of the things I was going through at the time and showed me if I believed, worked hard and gave my best that I could make it to..Thanks again...The new show is great I can't wait for more,I know you guys will be great .
