    Just fyi, Mike keeps saying he's using the Neutral preset on the unit, but he's actually using the Podcast Studio preset. The Depth, Sparkle and Punch settings shown on the video are at around 3/4 to max, which is consistent with Podcast Studio. If it were set to Neutral, they would only be around 1/4 to max. Hope this clears up any confusion anyone may have had.

    Thanks for reviewing this setup. That's what I use in conjunction with the RCP2, and I value your expertise in dialing in the best sound quality for the listeners. However, I am curious as to why you chose the dynamic mic setting instead of the SM7B setting to lead off with in this mic setup. I know the SM7B is a dynamic mic, but I am wondering if you notice or don't notice any difference in choosing either setting to begin the vocal processing for the SM7B.

      @@MikeRussell Ahh makes sense. As you and other YT content creators have stated, there's always a different approach to setting up audio for our voice, but as I said, I was just curious as to why. Dropping a quick suggestion If you haven't thought of it yet, you should do a series on processing these same mics with their RCP2 settings applied within Adobe Audition, Audacity, and Reaper. Keep the content coming.

    Hi Mike…love your stuff. I did what you did a few months ago and I sold about 7K worth of outboard gear and replaced it with the Rodecaster Pro 2 as my primary interface. My background…I am a full time Voiceover talent, Creative Dir. Agency partner, Commercial producer for audio and video (30 years). So, have a little technical background…lol. I have been having one heck of time getting this unit to sound good both recording in Adobe Audition CC and playing back. I am using the Rode ASIO drive…but even at high sample rates it click and pops every now and again. I have a new Alienware I9 intel with 64 gigs of ram and an RTX 3080 ti GPU…optimized windows 11 for performance, this is a beast of a PC…but still the Rodecaster just doesn’t seem to perform. I am coming from an RME Babyface Pro FS. Also, the every headphone jack sounds like there is a slight flanger effect going on. It is subtle, but annoying. I have tried multiple headphones. My mics are Mojave 301 FET, Universal Audio SD1 and Senheiser MK 416. Let me know if you have any thoughts or if you have experienced any of these same issues. Thank you! Cheers.

    Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I was wonderfully surprised that you reviewed and have tutorials on the Rodecaster Pro 2. I honestly value your judgment and advice on all things audio. I've been having MRC create my sweepers and jingles exclusively for several years now and I've never been disappointed. I am in the process of bringing my internet station back online and have been testing Amazon Amp the last several months. I use an AirPad and the RCP2 for Amp. I previously had used a DNR Airlite mixing console for my full time station. It had a huge learning curve for me but has been great once I figured it out. Now, since I bought the RCP2 the Airlite is in a box going unused. ($1600 investment). I can use it for AMP and on Live365. I was surprised that you went full on RCP2 with all of the other equipment you've been using, but it assures me that I made the right choice switching to Rode. I also saw your video on the Rode Podcast mic and may try one out. I currently have a Shure SM7B and an EV RE27N/D. The EV is new for me as I've always been a big fan of the Shure products. I broadcast from a fairly noisy environment so I really need the sound isolation built into those mics. Anyway, keep producing super content. Now I need to master Audition with your tutorials. I will be ordering more sweepers from MRC soon.

    Dear Mike,
    Namaste from India. I recently discovered your videos, and absolutely love them. Your advice is always precise, concise, and provides answers at a deeper level than may otherwise be available, all whilst being easy to understand. Thank you so much for all you do. I have subscribed and will return many times, including for courses at some stage.
    I have a quick few questions, if I may:
    1. If we follow your advice on adjusting the sound on the Rodecaster Pro 2 + Shure SM7B mic combo as in this video, can we avoid the need for any post production sound mixing / tweaking ? I ask because our video editors may not be skilled enough to do this, and I want to eliminate the scope for more work for them which they may not be able to get right, but without reducing outstanding broadcast level quality in any way. Alternatively, are there any quick tweaks they can add during the edit for each video, which are essentially fool proof, and quite easy to implement ? They use the Adobe suite.
    2. Would the output from the Rodecaster Pro 2, after mixing the mic input sound to the sound richness as described in your video, be saved with same quality if recorded to an iPhone camera, assuming that the Rodecaster can output the sound to an iPhone whose camera is being used for the video. Would you recommend that, or would the sound quality be better if recorded to the Rodecaster directly, and that sound then synched separately during post ?
    3. Can the Shure + Rodecaster set up also be used for regular Zoom / MS Team / other video calls ? Is the sound input into our MacBook simply to be set to Rodecaster, and that will input whatever sound settings we set in the Rodecaster, as advised in this video ?
    4. Finally, if one were to use a boom mic like the Senheiser 416, so that it is out of shot when recording video, would the Rodecaster settings be able to compensate for the distance from the mouth and bring back that deeper, Shure SM7B podcast sound ?
    I value your judgment, experience and suggestions immensely, and eagerly await your responses.
    Thank you again and kindest regards,
    Tina Singh
    New Delhi, India

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tina,
      1. The Rodecaster Pro, if set correctly, could produce audio that wouldn't need post production
      2. I wouldn't recommend using the internal mic of the iPhone
      3. If set correctly a shotgun mic could be an ideal choice for video work

    Really strange that I created a RCP2 preset with the SM7B and days later started having RFI when I touched the microphone and cable (similar to how a bad cable would sound). I created a new preset with the same settings and it resolved the issue (no hardware changes). Really odd behavior, but easy to delete the previous preset. I know folks have had similar RFI issues with the RCP1 and SM7B.

    Just watched the video on the Rode caster you made, now I'm watching this.
    I don't know if it's just me but your voice sounds crushed and strained with some sibilance. It doesn't seem to carry much low end.
    I have been using a NT1 into a Mackie profx8 mixer with an FMR RNAC. Again, I'm not sure if this is because you removed analog chain or what but something you have in your digital chain is making it sound suboptimal. To me.

      Hey there! It sounds like you might need to adjust your microphone's proximity to your mouth to minimize picking up unwanted sounds, try positioning the Shure SM7B closer to your mouth and experiment with a pop filter to help reduce breath noises.

    I don't really get it, Mike. Rode didn't really invent anything with its gain structure on the RodeCaster. Lots of mixers with good pre-amps, gain structure and peak lights that have been doing the job for decades. Also why doesn't anyone comment on the fact that the headphone mix you get on the RodeCaster is not only non-adjustable, but inaccurate. I don't like this mixer. And I don't know if they've improved the sound effects button set-up, but on the previous model you can't solo the sounds without the fader up -- and that either goes to air or on the recording.

Couple of questions; 1) Why are you not using the SM7B profile, is there a reason why you are using the Dynamic setting or did it not exist when your recorded this Video? and 2) I am using the SM7B default profile, Podcaster profile for setting and haven't touched a single thing, but I get audio dipping at points during my recordings and I don't talk very loud either, so do you have any ideas on what is going wrong here? thanks for any help as your Audio is amazing .. so thanks in advance !!

    Well done. I'm new to your content. A couple of questions with the SM7B. Does touching the "Neutral, Podcast or Broadcast" settings reset it to default for those? So does that mean I need to click on the plus button to add the setting that you did as a personal setting? The other question is, forgive me if I'm not explaining this right, when I take a breath I don't hear it so that's good, but as I begin to talk there is a small pulse of air noise that accompanies my voice. Is there a way to get rid of that? When I'm done speaking to take a breath I can hear that air noise go away a half a second later. I don't know what you call that as I'm learning what things like "Attack" and "Noise Gate" and "Compressor actually do. - --UPDATE: the noise I'm speaking about is this. After I had finished watching this video I went to save the presets and as I was typing on the screen on the Podcaster Pro 2 that's the exact noise I'm talking about with every touch of the screen. What is that sound and with what setting is it associated? I'm thinking if I'm in the middle of a podcast the last thing I'd want to do when I touch a button is create that noise as it just cuts in to the sound. The noise is created when I tap on the boom arm (using the one from Elgato) and when I tape on the table. The Broadcast setting eliminates that sound. UPDATE again: It seems to be the Noise Gate. I keep going up and down on the Threshold. I'm noticing it cuts into my voice at -28 so I lowered it to -52 but I get the noise. So I brought it back up to -40.8 and it's gone. Still figuring all this out. Sorry for the long comment/question

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  ปีที่แล้ว

      You want to look at the hold, attack and release settings although be careful not to trap the softer parts of your voice out with the noise gate too.

    I have the rogue caster Pro 2 end it has a setting for that particular mic setting you picked for the mind is that better than the one they were suggesting for that now?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the recommended settings for the Shure SM7B in this video are specifically optimized for use with the RodeCaster Pro II. So using those settings would be a great choice for getting the best audio quality with your microphone. They also have a handy preset too but remember to dial it for your voice and surroundings.

    Is your De-Esser still working from the gauge that moves in real time? I have a RCP2 and also now a Duo and both units have firmware 1.2.2 and they have the De-Esser Gauge pointing down now. It still works and you can hear thr difference when you make adjustments but i cant get the little Gauge thing to move anymore. I sent Rode an email but havent heard from them.

    Hey Mike. So i bought both the RCP2 and the shure sm7b based on your video. and i hook it up and it sounds nowhere near as good as yours in this video. i figure it would just be plug and play really because they have a special preset for it built into the device. i'm using OBS to record my audio. and i also have to boost the gain up by 30 DBs in obs for the mic recording to be loud enough. i have no idea what is going on. why i have to raise the gain in OBS by 30 db and also why it does sound even half as good as your audio in this video with the exact same equipment. and i already have it set to 63db on the RCP2. the only thing different would be the room. i don't have a treated room. but that shouldn't make it sound entirely different and wouldn't explain why have to raise the gain so much in obs. thanks for your help

      @@MaxxSportz hey for the volume. My "line in level" on the sound recording settings on the pc was set to only like 50%. Once I raised it to 98% it helped with the volume in OBS a little. But without a gain booster I still have to use about 65db of gain and add in an additional 15 or so on OBS. It's so weird. I bought a gain booster though. I still get noise on the sm7b but it's not as much as before

    Straight out of the box im getting alot of noise w my headphone gain turned up. I dont know what im doing but i know what i want. To connect sm7b to zoom 3v for autotune then to rodecaster pro2 for extra processing and recording.the zoom supplies phantom and so does the rode. Can i damage anything you know of. Thank you

      You only need Phantom Power on the device the mic is directly connected to so can turn it off on the Rodecaster

      If you're experiencing distorted peaks with your RodeCaster Pro II and Shure SM7B setup, try adjusting your microphone gain and ensure you're not clipping the audio signal.
