    The whole iPhone repair program felt just like... like many had said, a way to push you to have Apple fix it instead.
    And when regulator body cranks down on the right to repair, Apple can just point at it and say "we have it", or worse use statistics from the program and push back the right to repair " because people don't use the program"

    • @PvtAnonymous
      @PvtAnonymous 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      you missed a crucial point: it is not Apple providing the SSR. It is run by a different company. From their "About us" page:
      "Apple has engaged Service Parts or Tools, Inc. (SPOT) to create the Self Service Repair Store to make genuine Apple parts and tools available. We are here to support questions about your order and assist with the System Configuration step that may be required at the end of your repair.
      SPOT is a wholly owned subsidiary of Communication Test Design, Inc., a full-service, global engineering, repair and logistics company headquartered in West Chester, PA."
      Apple just sells them the parts, like to every AASP and IRP, which they then sell again to the end customer. It's like GeekSquad selling you the parts. That company has no affiliation with Apple whatsoever and it can hardly be used as an argument against right to repair in court/congress or whatever else.

    • @CosmicTeapot
      @CosmicTeapot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PvtAnonymous Woah so instead of selling genuine parts to all the largest, most renowned repair service companies, Apple chose a single obscure one and made it in charge of the entire repair market? How typical of them. I swear to god, Apple is like a tech totalitarian dictator, they are obsessed with having absolute control over everything.

    • @NanoMine
      @NanoMine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@PvtAnonymous That's only what public knows, I'm pretty sure Apple controls pretty much everything on how this program will work.

    • @PvtAnonymous
      @PvtAnonymous 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@NanoMine not really. Everyone who knows how AASPs and IRPs get their parts from Apple, this is basically the same thing. I can explain the process.
      When a repair is started via GSX (Apple‘s internal system for repair management) there is a few things required. The serial number, turning off Find My, personal contact data and what part is used for the repair. When all of that is entered into GSX, you can either start the repair if you have the parts stocked or you have to wait for delivery. After you repair the device, the serial numbers of the old and new parts have to be entered into GSX before you can proceed with system configuration. The old parts can be send back so you don‘t have to pay the full price.
      Now, SPOT does just one thing differently: they send you the part to do the repair. Everything else is the same.
      Their process involves creating a GSX case for you, entering your data, ordering the part from Apple, they pay the regular IRP/AASP prices for the part. The part is then sent to you via Apple‘s distributor network and after you perform the repair, they do the system configuration like any other technician would, I mean the exact same way. They make their profit from the difference between what they pay Apple and what the customer pays them. The renting of the machines is the same. SPOT own the machines and they can do with them what they want, in this case - rent them out. Apple has no real involvement in this process except allowing them to sell parts to end consumers, everything and I literally mean everything else, is handled by SPOT.

    The one big problem with Apple Self-Serve Repair (and the Independent Repair Program before it) is that you can't really buy and stock parts, which is how you get quick turn-around times in the phone repair business. Louis Rossman actually stopped doing iPhone repair years and years ago because he couldn't do same-day turnaround times and nobody is willing to have their phone in the shop for a week.

      By comparison, Samsungs are way easier since at the end of the day they don't have the same arbitrary calibration requirements and are generally much more flexible when it comes to repairs. Not perfect by any means, but definitely preferable to anyone doing this professionally.

    I work at a Genius Bar and can confirm all the tools and equipment are exactly the same as the ones used in store. Also, the reason other parts aren't available (like rear glass) is because we don't have those parts ourselves, as they come bundled as a "rear system". Effectively, Apple are giving access to everything we have access to (other than diagnostics) for the supported phones.

    • @cyclingvideoes

      This is what I wish the video explained! I feel like they make it seem like it hasn’t always been this way. Where they just “purposely” made these specific repair tools to discourage people to not use the repair program. But it’s never been sunshine and rainbows repairing iPhones, lol. Sure, older models were “easier” on the scale of repairing iPhones but with higher demand of phones (like being waterproof) you’re going to have more compact form factors and things that make it harder to repair because of that.

      @@cyclingvideoes It's like repairing old computers from the 80's and 90's. You could literally swap the chips and stuff because they were far, far, far bigger than they are now. Given how densely packed modern circuit boards are (on several layers even), good luck. It's not so much companies don't want you repairing stuff, it's they don't want you to try it, fuck it up because it's incredibly difficult then blame them for it. Things like RAM and storage were only ever easy to replace because they were VERY unreliable for so long. Hard drives died ALL the time, especially on laptops and even RAM would go bad in a very short period of time. I remember our IT guy at primary school having a bin full of RAM sticks so they could replace them every year as was the recommendation back then. Modern hardware is orders of magnitude more reliable, so it's far less worth the effort of making them be swapped out in many cases.

      I've been doing front-end development and graphic design for 15 years now and yes, absolutely, it is. The M1 Air is barely any less powerful than the M1 Pro, and that's mostly because of cooling. The M2 Air is just an upgraded chassis, upgraded graphics chip, and a magsafe port. Performance difference between M1 and M2 isn't really worth it, but the rest definitely is.
      When people starting some kind of graphics/photo/video school and ask me for a macbook recommendation I tell them all to just get the Air. They don't lose a ton of value in the first year or two (a used macbook is usually still worth pretty close to MSRP) and you can always upgrade later, but of the 5 people who got an M1 Air because of me none have felt the need to ugprade after a year. Two of those people do 4K video editing on it, which is getting close to its limits, but absolutely doable if you have a render farm at school or a gaming PC at home that you can use for rendering.

    First: The translation is very "official" which isn't to bad, but uncommon and there are some minor errors which I want to adress. (I know it is just a small joke which is there for like 250 milliseconds or something, but I still just want to give a tip for people reading this)
    Möglicherweise müssen Sie Mac Adress mögen und abonnieren --> mögen is the correct translation of (to) like, but in internet terminology you just use "liken"
    Klicken Sie auf den "Daumen hoch" Symbol --> In this case your article "den" is the masculin Akkusativ form, but it refers to Symbol which uses Neutrum, so the correct use would be: "Klicken Sie auf das 'Daumen hoch' Symbol".
    Anyway thanks for the entertainment!

    also, bootlooping is most likely an earpiece speaker defect, not motherboard, but since apple don't want to let face id work on a replaced earpiece speaker (that's where the sensors for face id is) for "SeCuRiTY", so repairing your phone make you loose face id

      If they designed them to be more repairable they couldn’t get the same form factor they do now. Technicians at the Apple store go through the same process to repair these devices. It’s never been sunshine and rainbows to repair iPhones and I feel like this is being mad at a cat for not being a dog

    I think there's only one scenario where you can say the Self-Service Repair Program works and is worth it. Is if you rent the tools and have multiple iPhones of the same model that are needed to be repaired or replaced. I guess this works if your entire family uses the same model of iPhones and happens to be in need of battery replacements, or anything to repair. So maybe just rent out the tools and order the parts, and since you indeed have many to replace. I think it will cost a lot less if they rent one set of the tools, grab the parts, and someone on their family do it?

      Which probably would account for about 1/10 of 1% of people whose use case applies. I'm estimating but if you own independent repair shop you don't need that stuff, already have adequate tools... So unless you're a content creator that happens to be fixing phones for ad revenue, it's hard to find someone who applies.

    Whoever says anything other than "this is a step in the right direction, but miles from the goal" is straight up wrong. At the very least, and I really mean absolute minimum, they need to make it way cheaper. $20 savings for the multiple waiting periods (shippings and chat bots) plus the hassle and potential to break it is absurd.
    Also, the fact that they have the whole "new hardware detected, phone unusable" bullshit is bullshit.

    • @DanKaschel
      @DanKaschel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was clever in an evil genius kind of way for Apple to outsource this. When questioned about WHY it’s so damn expensive, Apple can simply say that they don’t set the prices and that their partner needs to make margin on providing their services.
      And they weren’t done there. Have you noticed that the parts are weirdly expensive while the equipment rental is weirdly cheap? Huh… that means that it doesn’t really make sense for lots of repair shops to buy these and offer repairs on Apple products because the part cost is too high to offer a compelling value proposition. It puts a really cynical cast on the repair tool rental pricing which is barely enough to cover shipping, let alone cleaning, testing, & re-packing.

    Does no one else notice how blatantly Apple is trolling everyone with this sorry excuse for a self repair service? They literally made the website look like a 2008 windows driver installation page, and everything works out to be just as overtly expensive as going to an apple store.
    I'm willing to give apple the benefit of the doubt when it comes to how difficult it is to perform the actual repair of the phone since we cant expect today's phones to have enough space for consumer friendly assembly, but other than that its seems clear that they just made this move as a marketing ploy to drive off right to repair advocates

    • @PvtAnonymous
      @PvtAnonymous 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's not by Apple. The SSR program is provided by Service Parts or Tools, Inc, which is a completely different company. Apple sells them the parts, they sell them to consumers and take their share. It is a blatant misconception that Apple is to blame for this, if anyone is to blame - it's SPOT. I would also advise against using their services after checking their privacy policy where they state that they will use your data "To administer surveys, sweepstakes, promotions, or contests". Big no no.
