I think they should add on/off switches for everything (widgets, media, etc), and let you set it exactly how you want it

    I'm one of those people who shoots exclusively with the iPhone. There was a time when I wanted a camera, but once I got the Halide app on my iPhone XR a few years ago and learned manual control and RAW shooting on that, I've decided to just stick with using the phone. Especially now with my 13 pro Max, the three different lenses cover pretty much any kind of picture I'd taking, dynamic range is pretty good, and just the fact that I will always have my phone with me makes the idea of getting a camera not make much sense any more. Of course having a camera would have its benefits, but the phone has been good enough for me so far, and that's why I'm sticking with it.

    • @hellnawnaw
      @hellnawnaw ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'm curious because I know it's the best iPhone camera app and, despite having a DSLR for my hobbyst portrait shooting, I wanted to unlock the full potential of my iPhone 13 Mini's sensor but I don't like the software as subscription model so I didn't try Halide myself yet

Since then, I’ve tried many other RAW camera apps, and I’ve settled with using CameraPixels mostly. It’s $7 I think, but I’d also recommend Reeflex camera since it’s free and also allows RAW shooting and full manual control. • @azenyr
      @azenyr ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yea I though the future would be to eliminate all screen interruptions and going all under screen or any other solution. The future would always be to make it smaller and smaller until the screen was not interrupted anymore. But I guess Apple just figured they could actually evolve backwards to not make it expensive to produce, and just create a full extra software feature around it and make it the selling point so people would not mind the bigger display interruption. But I do. There is no software in this world that can fix bad hardware. Fck dynamic island, not only is the hole bigger and lower in the screen, it also wiggles and moves around screaming for your attention. The future should be making it unnoticeable, not make it scream to be noticed ...
      I have no idea what Apple users have in their heads. iOS is great in many things but moves like this from Apple just make me puke and never buy anything from them.

      I switched from a iPhone X to a 13 Pro, and I was blown away by the upgrade in speed, display, and cameras. But since the software is all the same, I got used to it really fast… and honestly it didn’t feel like a new phone after a week or so.

    • @Axeiaa
      @Axeiaa ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Think that's more of a 'the market has matured', upgrades end up being incremental rather than revolutionary. There isn't that much that can be improved during these short release cycles anymore. Not just with iPhones btw, it's the same thing in the Android landscape - all new phones are just the same as the old version but a little bit better. There's no massive steps forward in any specific part, there's no new must-have features.
      5G is highly overrated, barely ever will you notice an actual difference. You have to be in very specific locations to actually have a faster connection than 4G* and it sure as heck isn't more reliable. USB-C - ehhh, probably won't happen. Apple likes making money off accessories - a many billion $$$ market. USB-C would make them no money, removing the port (as was done with the audiojack) and selling magsafe chargers at a premium (as was done with earpods) is a much better business plan.
      So you can probably use that iPhone until it stops working or until the urge to want something new and shiny gets too strong.
      *Do note that having a '5G' icon on the top of the screen doesn't mean you have a 5G connection, it might just be creative marketing. AT&T shows 5G E for a very sub-par 5G but tiny little bit better than 4GB connection (even after lots of controversy about it) and some other carriers pull off some similar nonsense. This along with people not realising 4G can actually already do 100Mbps in ideal real world circumstances and 5G seems more and more like a big marketing campaign to push people to buy new phones and more expensive data plans.

    I'm definitely hoping there will be more done with the Dynamic Island; it seems kind of ridiculous that notifications still drop down separately, taking even more screen real estate away, when you have this beautiful area at the top to display them in. I believe in an earlier piece on the 14 Pro (or maybe it was another channel ,I can't remember), someone joked that Apple caught up with the LG V20 and its secondary screen above the main screen. I had one of those, and it was great! Being able to receive calls and see notifications and phone vitals without taking up any screen space was fantastic. I was a staunch defender of the notch. Having gone from an iPhone six to the 10, it always felt like less of the notch imposing itself into the screen, and more like free real estate on either side for the clock and battery instead of having to have a task bar across the top. The hole on the other hand, I hate it. Once you put the little bit of light across the top of it, now it feels like it imposes itself on the screen. I and maybe I would feel differently if I got used to it, but I couldn’t care less about an always on display. And that’s only useful if you’re setting your phone on your desk all the time, but mine is always in my pocket so for me to look at it I have to pull it out anyway. Even on my watch I almost never, wish the display was on.

    I have a personal curiosity about the Genshin benchmark.
    Because some locations of the world (especially new ones like some parts of Sumeru as of the time of typing) are still somewhat unoptimized, so Jon should list the location where the test is held as well.
    As an iPhone 12 Pro Max user, you can easily get stable 60FPS (very occasional spikes) in Mondstadt kingdom but you’ll get crazy graphical artifacting when a lot of particles and effects show up WHILE IN DRAGONSPINE (such as Beidou’s Ultimate when fighting the Great Snowboar King).

  • @Spanky2k
    @Spanky2k ปีที่แล้ว

    I turned my always on display off after about a week's worth of use, for a number of reasons. Firstly, I found it too distracting as I kept glancing at my phone. Secondly, I found it jarring how I couldn't have 'light mode' on the always on display, meaning every time I unlocked my phone, it basically flipped colours. Yes, I know that would have cost more battery but I'd have liked to have the option. Thirdly, I don't like the 'stacked' notifications view and even if you turn that off, it *keeps* the stacked view for when it's in always-on mode. So when I 'wake' my phone, all the notifications move and I can't see them clearly when it's in always on because they're stacked. In the end, it just didn't feel like it was worth the battery life cost.
    I agree what you say about the dynamic island and how it's backward. Honestly, I barely use it actively i.e. I never tap on it on purpose but I do think it works well for info purposes and covering up the sensors.
    The primary reason I always upgrade my iPhone is for the marginal camera improvements because the better the camera you have with you, the more likely you are of capturing moments. However, frustratingly, I can't use ProRaw because you can't do ProRaw while also using the single best feature Apple has ever added; Live Photos. I'd *love* it if you could do both and would then default everything to that but you can't. If I'm planning on taking 'high quality / arty' photos then I'd dig out my DSLR. But I don't do that usually and haven't taken it out with me in *years*. I want to capture moments and I want to capture those moments in the best way I can, which means having the newest iPhone. I'm usually taking pictures of my kids, pets, wife and generally just life. For that, Live Photos is literally unbeatable.

    I mainly take photos with an 11 pro max, but I daily an SE 2020 because I much prefer to carry a smaller, lighter phone in my pocket that is less expensive to repair. I’ll take the 11PM out only when I’m going to be taking photos. The only “real camera” I have is about 20 years old, 4mp sensor. Takes great photos unreliably, partly due to age and things not working properly, partly due to me not being a DSLR genius. I find that my 11PM is easier to take amazing photos with on a more consistent basis, and is just tons more portable due to it being phone shaped. Airdrop is another feature that a DSLR won’t have, although newer ones have Bluetooth connectivity though apps. Since I’m not a professional, I don’t see myself buying a relevant DSLR anytime soon when the 11PM is as good as it is. I have really been thinking about trading it in for a 13PM to do the same thing with, but I wish there was a 2x zoom lens like the 11 pros instead of the 3x of the 13 pros… 3x is simply too much for a main lens. Leave that to software

    I hope so, I just ordered one today to replace my now three- year old 11 Pro ;-) Then again, I use mine as much as a video and still camera - despite owning two mirrorless DSLR cameras - as I do as an actual phone, so... actually I wouldn't be unhappy if Apple put an M43 lens mount on the bump 😛 the compactness and convenience of an iPhone for shooting video is hard to match when out bushwalking. Setting up a "proper" camera takes forever in comparison and while capable of higher quality obviously, for run-and-gun type filming it's a real pain. The iPhone's auto-HDR video is more than 'good enough', and because it's so fast to deploy, you can capture more usable footage.
