In late 2019, we've created & produced the first 5 episodes of the "drum-tec Silent Studio Sessions", showcasing the limitless possibilities of the high end drum-tec pro series electronic drums, a Roland TD-50 sound module & cymbals, triggering sounds from sample libraries like Toontrack Superior Drummer or Steven Slate SSD5.
We had lots of fun during a one day recording session with my buddy Gundy Keller on guitar/bass at Spytunes Studio, where we recorded 3 songs of Gundy & did another 2 jam session tracks for the videos.
Please feel frree to subscribe to @digitaldrumming for more drumming, music & sound demo videos!

Ralph is the perfect drummer to showcase how far edrums have come, this is what they are capable of sounding like. Excellent playing as usual.
Thank you so much! :)

And at 5.24, just after that tasty riff, Gundy shouts "yeah"... I know that feeling!
:-D
As a drummer and owner of a DrumTec kit, I can say that they are affordable, pro-built, highly playable and are at home in any home studio or stage. Oh yeah: These videos kick ass! The guitarist is a monster, and Ralph is always fantastic.
Agreed on all fronts, thank you so much pal!
unfassbares zusammenspiel !😎
Just amazing in every respect. I have such admiration for Ralph. What he has done for the e drum world is no short of amazing.
Thank you so much for you rkind feedback! :)
I forgot all about buying a kit once you guys started jamming out..both killing it....Outstanding!!....BRAVO!!..👍
Thank you so much! :)
Watched a million vids trying to decide ifI should convert my kit to this approach for recording, now I know the answer from these dudes that sold it beautifully, great jamming.
Hey Jason, glad you liked the session! Keep in mind, the electronic drums used in the jam are professionally manufactured 100% Roland compatible drum-tec pro series pads:
www.drum-tec.com/pads/drum-tec?p=1&o=3&n=12&f=86%7C90%7C73
They deliver completely different triggering results & playing feel than an A to E conversion, especially the Real Feel bass drums have a unique dampening system for ultrarealistic rebound/feel.
Feel free to get in touch through experts@drum-tec.de for any further questions. Kind regards!
I am in same boat…😂
Really love the jam. Ralph kills it! He's inspiring....
Thank you very much Dave! ✌️
Mr Keller and yourself are killin’
Thank you very much! ✌️😃
wow i have for the first time heard the TD50 TO ITS FULLEST CAPACITY AND NOW IM IN LOVE WITH IT
Hi Alexander, the sounds you are hearing are coming from Toontrack Superior / EZ Drummer & Steven Slate SSD5. The TD-50 module in this case is used to trigger/play these external sample libraries with best possible playability/triggering. Kind regards!
@@digitaldrumming Hi, just wondering if you’re hearing the toontrack plug-ins in real-time or are they later edited based off the midi data? Lg aus NRW

Ralf, this is incredible. This much talent in just one person should be illegal. Your videos on this and drumtec TH-cam channels have helped me with my electronic drums buying decisions. Keep up this awesome work. Happy New Year!

WOW!! And it was 19 so and so when I laid hands on a Fisher Price practice pad. Now I'm contemplating an electronic drum set. But at least I'm driven to pick the wood back up. I think.🥺

Top! Danke!
Vielen lieben Dank & dir auch alles Gute für 2021! :)
that, for me, is the peak of what's possible with electronic drums in the beginning of the 2020's. Even when i listen with headphones it is nearly impossible to hear if it's an edrum or a very fine recorded acoustic set. Although I'm not a real Roland fan i must admit that, with a big respect to Gewa and all the great drummers representing the Gewa G9, the set Ralf is playing here is very difficult to outmatch! And - btw and of course - the playing and performing is excellent ...!!
Danke dir für dein Feedback Andi, hoffe dir gehts & happy new year!

Thank you so much! 😀
All of the playing on these tracks is incredible. Around 7:45 in has the best build in groove for me, great work.
Edit: Someone put a good amount of time into the video shoot and edit of this video too. It plays out visually a bit like Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii, pretty cool.
Thank you so much, glad you liked it! For shooting the video, I got a friend of mine for some additional hand held cam over to the studio, the rest ist motorized sliders & static cams actually :) I usually do all the cutting/editing myself too, which was big fun especially for this session. Kind regards!

Muchas gracias! :)
Pro's at work and you're nailing it Ralf! Meanwhile pointing out the direction for edrumming in combination with HQ plugins. Best Wishes for 2021 and stay safe!
Thank you so much Hans & happy 2021 to you too! :)
make s band man.... this chops are insane !!
Ralfs a machine on those drums but the dude playing guitar and bass is also a pretty remarkable musician exceptionally good playing guys .
The drums play and sound fabulous, now this is only a personal gripe they look a little rolandy for want of a better description I think it’s because there black and that’s the one thing I’d want to get away from buying in a kit at this level I’d want it to look nice as well as sound nice lol but that’s certainly not a criticism just a personal observation of my own great review thanks 👏👏👏👍
Thank you so much for your kind feedback! The guitar/bass player is my buddy Gundy Keller :)
The black drum-tec pro series has actually been available for many years already, then came the ATV aDrums some years later and finally the Roland VAD series was the latest contender "in the game". The pro & diabolo series are available in several other finishes too:
www.drum-tec.com/edrums
A major difference is the drum-tec Real Feel bass drums, which are considerably more silent & play more authentic than the VAD bass drums:
th-cam.com/video/J9Ig12wXESQ/w-d-xo.html
Having played all three (drum-tec, ATV, Roland) extensively for all the demos on the drum-tec channel, I honestly prefer the diabolo/pro series by far. I am using a pro series kit at my studio & a beautiful diabolo ltd. series at my home studio:

Fantastic quality of playing and recording! I would like to be playing with you guys! :)

Nice jams. I know it's written but being instrumental it seems like a few jam sessions.
Thank you very much! Actually track 4 & 5 have been spontaneaous jams, that we used for overdubbing in the mix later :) kind regards!
Nice mate 🙂
Mine is a TD-12, with two modules, but I have upgraded it aaa lot. KD-120 bass-drum, PD-105 and PD-125 pads. CY-15-R. CY-14, CY-12, with VH-12 main hi-hat and VH-11 used as 2nd one. After lots of tuning, I always keep the sounding at #1 on both modules, cause I love my sounding :) More of an acoustic type drummer I guess. I would say my drum is similar to a TD-30.
Sounds great! :)
@@digitaldrumming But seriously, try to play that, bud. :) th-cam.com/video/6FJlxMPE5b0/w-d-xo.html High level stuff right there, pal. ;)
@@digitaldrumming so, did ya try? ;-)
@@jeromed2 No man, I couldn't even if I wanted to, not my personal "cup of tea" musically speaking and I'd really need some extra practice on that double bass stuff ;-D Kind regards!
Amazing Ralf.....just amazing. May I please ask how you record the music if you are using Superior Drummer through the TD50 interface? Clearly the internal recording function in the TD59 will no longer apply. Would you need a DAW on the computer?
Thank you so much Jean Claude! Yes exactly, I am running EZD/SD as a plugin in Logic Pro Audio on my Macbook, and am recording midi & audio data at the same time through an interface. KInd regards!
@@digitaldrumming thank you so much Ralf. Really appreciate the response.
Hi Ralph! Amazing video as usual! I´ve got a VAD506. Which in-earphones do you recommend?
Hey Christian, if use a pair of customized Vision Ears InEars:

Kind regards!
Ralf, are you cutting anymore jams? Love to hear more!
Hey Pedro, yes I hope to be shooting some new sessions end of 2022 / early 2023 actually :) kind regards!
@@digitaldrumming Ralph, not to put you on the spot but since i sold my acoustic kits I've been looking at electric. It will be mostly for practice and recording at home but eventually i want to get back out and gig locally. i'm fortunate in that i can afford your Drum-Tech pro kit with the td50, do you think its too much or should i go with the Diablo/TD27? Will the sound and feel be much different?
@@pedrolsantiagosr5092 I actually recently played a tour in summer with this exact setup (pro & TD-50X with digital pads), and it worked/played marvellously well :) diabolo is nice too, but might be too "compact" for certain musical genres.
The TD-27 is nice for studio/midi use, but if you need the separate direct outs for live there's no way "around" the TD-50X. It actually sounds a lot more punchy than the TD-27 also. Although they should be pretty close to each other, they aren't soundwise in my opinion.
I loved every minute during the tour, and everything felt perfectly "safe", sturdy and playing feel was/is simply unmatched. Get some nice cases for the kit & you'll be happy for pretty much the rest of your life ;-D
....well, until the TD-99 is released one day, haha. But then you can still just swap out the module & be happy again (if neccessary at all). Kind regards!
Fabulous drumming Ralph! What a brilliant performance from start to end. I've been coming to your channel for 1 year to figure out my future drum needs. Been an acoustic drummer all my life and have been hesitatnt to go the edrum route because the hand loves the wood shells too much. Alas, I've driven my neighbors mad by now and it's either a new basement on rent or an edrum. Would you suggest I wait out for Alesis to release a new strike pro model? I really love the hi-hat module from the TD-50 but Roland is out of my budget. Any suggestions? Would really appreciate it my man. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I'd suggest to go for a drum-tec Jam 3 or diabolo kit with a Roland sound module (TD-17 for lower budget, TD-27 for digital pads connectivity) for most authentic playing feel, best triggering & lowest pad noise all at once.
If module sounds are not enough for you then, you can still hook up the kit to Toontrack EZD or other drum libraries via midi and get outstanding results:
th-cam.com/video/Ppi87I3-jB4/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/4YimrssRQjo/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/bWRvrgJVFSo/w-d-xo.html
Honestly I wouldn't consider an Alesis, as product quality / triggering / playability is so much worse than any Roland based kit. Also I am not sure, how/when they might come up with a new Strike kit after losing that lawsuit against Roland for copying mesh head technology in the US.
Have you checked out the recent drum-tec Jam 3 demos yet?
th-cam.com/video/4YHMlBf1XNk/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/vJJ62YPxD-w/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/0XsPZq0-Svs/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/V_c6atkHY6M/w-d-xo.html
drum-tec Jam with Roland TD-17 (also previous Jam versions before Jam 3) has always been the kit that customers have chosen eventually in direct comparison, when coming to the Mainz showroom to check out the Alesis Strike 😀
Hope that helps a bit! Kind regards, R
I am considering e-drums for my studio, but I would need to record via USB midi. Are there drum libraries that are fully compatible with an electronic drum kit? is there any list of suggested libraries for each kit maker? thanks !
Hi Frederico, you'll need enough cpu power & a well working audio interface/audio driver to get latency down while playing as far as possible. All big drum libraries have electronic drum module mapping support by now, Roland modules should work nicely with any Toontrack (Superior/EZ Drummer) library, XLN Addictive Drums & Steven Slate Drums too. There are probably more I have not mentioned, even the Logic Pro X included Studio Drummer works pretty well:
th-cam.com/video/bWRvrgJVFSo/w-d-xo.html
Kind regards!
at minute 5, which kit drum are you using? I like the sound of snare, kick, and everything!
As far as I remember, those were sounds from Toontrack's EZD2. I love the Toontrack products, I think no other brand offers their high level of e-drum integration & high end sound quality. e-drum mapping features of SD3 are absolutely unmatched, and even their EZD line with less functions works outstandingly great out of the box & it also has some sensational sounds. Kind regards!
Great!! Did you use an external audio interface for this or it's just the TD-50 to the pc? What's best for lower latency?
Hi, yes we used an external audio interface because we were also recording the bass/guitars and needed two headphone amplifiers for monitoring. KInd regards!
not bad from an ex-Formula-1 driver to be honest!
You wouldn't believe how often I've heard that one in the past years... ;)
@@digitaldrumming ah, shite.... And I thought I could be original.... :)))
@@Torrente588 ;-D
I realy need to know how you get that sound , what gear your are mixing with.
And are both earing the whole bass and drums clearly ?
Hey Gabe, bass/guit DI signals + drums midi coming from the TD-50 module are all fed into an audio interface and recorded in Logic Pro Audio on a Macbook Pro (live monitoring through headphones with hardly any latency).
The midi of drums is triggering Toontrack Superior / EZ Drummer, and finally I have applied some EQing/Comp for the mix. Nothing fancy though, as the basic drum sounds coming from the Toontrack libraries are already so good :)
I am mixing all in the box, with plugins from Waves & actually some stock Logic plugins too.
kind regards!
sounds really good!!!!...i think is better than s. slate drummer!!..
Thank you David!
Would be awesome to get these without drums so we can play along on the Roland TD50. I would buy these play along tracks if you sold them.
Hey Micah, actually some playalong releases are in the making :) although these tracks won't be included I guess, since they were written by my buddy Gundy Keller. Kind regards!
i have recently started using EZ Drummer 3 with my Roland TD-50, When you have your headphones on the sounds you're hearing are almost indistinguishable from a real acoustic kit, HOWEVER when it's RECORDED it just immediately sounds processed and obvious its an E-kit. I find that very bizarre because when people make grooves inside the software there's no way you'd be able to tell. what you reckon ralph? fantastic drumming btw!
Thank you Joel! I am not sure if I understand correctly, what do you mean "when it's recorded it immediatly sounds processed"? Don't you monitor the EZDrummer sounds while playing?
Kind regards!
Nice playing, can you please tell me how much is the drum set in this video, and any idea of what the duty tax would be to ship it to Thailand ?
Please get in touch through service@drum-tec.de & refer to this video if you like! Kind regards
We’re trying to setup a live jam setup with Logic Pro and a Focusrite 18i20. The drum go in via stereo output and sent back via headphone jack. The drums in the mix of guitars bass and vocal appear Distant sounding. Like quiet and far away. What am I doing wrong ?
This just sounds amazing, would love to know the drum setup in ezdrummer and your processing on the drums as I have an ekit and ezdrummer and ssd5 I’m sure I’m not the only one wanting to know this either, please tell.
Hi Nicholas, thank you! Unfortunately the sessions was recorded & shot in late 2019, so I don't have the sessions at hand. But as far as I remember I did only some basic stuff, some drum bus comp/eq on SSD5 and an additional mastering of the complete tracks afterwards. Kind regards!
@@digitaldrumming Ok no worries! Thanks anyway!
Can you use superior drummer for a live gig for example at wedding parties? What kind of setup would be required?
Hi Roshan, generally speaking yes you can. You'll need a laptop & audio interface on stage in addition to your kit & module (which I personally wouldn't do, especially on a crowded stage, where there's a lot of vibration and/or the danger of somebody bumping into the laptop stand.)
In my opinion, the Roland TD-50X actually has some very useable sounds & a great variety for different styles. If you need some nice authentic drum sounds for pop/rock tunes only, the Pearl Mimic Pro is a nice option. Kind regards!
sheesh.
:)
Is there a channel of u 2 jamming?
Until now, Gundy & I have only done this one silent studio session for drum-tec. But who knows what the future brings :) kind regards!
Do you notice a difference triggering with Roland Td-27 vs TD-50 to Superior Drummer 3. I’m trying to figure out if they trigger identical, or if there is a slight improvement with the TD-50?
Hey Leirrie, that's hard to tell, I haven't used the TD-27 for sample triggering yet. Generally speaking, the TD-27 & TD-50 should output the "same" mid notes & CCs, but I cannot tell that for sure unfortunately. You might get in touch with the guys through experts@drum-tec.de to find out if they possibly have further information on this. Kind regards!
Could you hear Superior Drummer Live? Did you have TD-50 sounds for live and then when mixing use SD? I have too much delay to use SD live. If so how did you set up your system?
Hi Marc, sure! I was using all of the sounds for live playing/recording. If your hardware/computer has enough cpu power & RAM, and if your audio driver is working well/fast, it shouldn't be a problem to set your DAW's buffer settings low enough to end up with a very low latency which makes it possible to play live. Kind regards!
Were the SD samples done live or added in the midi later on
Yes all samples were played/used live, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to really control dynamics & hihat open/close nuances while playing properly. If your computer has enough cpu power and a well working audio driver, it is no problem to set audio buffer settings very low resulting in hardly any latency. Kind regards!
Question on the ATV ad-CH17. I just bought one and connected to my TD-50x, changed the pad settings to the recommended setting (CY-15R) but it doesn't work right. There is no rim sensor. I assume this is something wrong with my unit. Did you get the china to work correctly without issue?
Hi, do you have two cables connected to the cymbal? Kind regards!
@@digitaldrumming Only one trs cable connected to the Edge input. Do you have two connected? I'm connecting just one cable to the AUX 4 input
@@xsonusstudios You need to connect with two cables to the ride & ride bell inputs of the module, otherwise you can only use 2 zones of the cymbals. Kind regards!
@@digitaldrumming Thanks for the reply. I actually bought a new ad-CH17 from drum-tec and received today. Now it works fine. The one I received before must have been broken. Be careful about buying from reverb on some of these things. You only need one cable for it to "work" for edge. Appreciate your reply here though!
@@xsonusstudios Ah sorry I read your first comment wrong :) I thought you were trying to get a 3-zone ride to work (because you mentioned a CY-15R preset). Sure, the 2 zones of any crash / china will work with one cable if everything is alright. Sorry for the misunderstanding & kind regards!
JAZZ ??? 😵💫
wait...what? why is there only one kick drum?
Hey Larry, what do you mean? :) kind regards!
So you don't have any issues with hi hat openness?
Hey Mark, no problems if your pads/module/hihat controller are set up nicely & you use an appropriate mapping preset in the software. Especially SD3 has a great mapping interface which has a lot of advanced hihat mapping features. Kind regards!
Why are the toms and bass drum so deap? Just to look more acustic? I mean they really do look better but is there a reason for it?
Hey Janne, in the first place is more about realistic / authentic & solid playing feel, as well as ergonomics. The "acoustic" look is a logical consequence then.
Altough you'll also be able to get solid results from 10" plastic pads like the Roland PDX-100 etc, those obviously won't be anywhere close to the feel of a drum-tec diabolo or pro series kit, or any acoustic kit neither.
The drum-tec Real Feel bass drums have a specially constructed interior dampening system, so their rebound is super natural, while their noise level is lower than any other bass drum pads on the market. Also stability (especially for rock or even double bass drumming) is so much more solid with a deep bass drum shell, then with any shaky flat bass drum pad.
Long story short, these kits play outstandingly realistic with lowest possible noise levels & 100% sound flexibility through midi. Equally great for live/studio work and home practice. If you ever come to Germany, you'll have to check one out at a drum-tec showroom, that says more than a thousand words really :-)
Kind regards!
Could you post one where it's just the two of you? Too much filler/backing track noise. Your playing stands on its own!
Hi Jake, all the backing tracks were made/overdubbed by Gundy Keller as well, I don't really think they are "noisy" ;-) Kind regards!
@@digitaldrumming I'm a purist and wanted to just hear the bass and drums! 😎
