Awesome video. I purchased a Tama Star Bubinga kit from you guys which is a real beauty. The snare sound and the bass drum sound are my favorite sounds of my Star Bubinga. Along with the hardware features that top the Starclassic hardware. At the moment I prefer the sound of my Starclassic maple toms to the Bubinga toms but who knows that may change in the future. Keep those Tama videos coming! I agree a comparison between Starclassic maple and Starclassic birch/walnut would be awesome!
Always surprising quality of comparisons. Room sound give a good idea of the real sound. A comparison of Starclassic Maple and Starclassic Walnut/Birch would also be very interesting !
A comparison between the star and starclassics would be very interesting. I’m running coated over clear ambassadors on my walnut birch starclassics and the toms are so melodic, warm and responsive to light playing. I’d love to see how they compare to the star walnut.
A good beech drum gives maple a run for its money, for all of the same reasons that maple is so good. But for some reason it never caught on the same way.
@@1dudecrush Yamaha had a beech line during the 90s and early 2000s (perhaps even in the late 80s, but I do not feel like looking into that stat this moment). I like bigger drums to be beech and smaller to be maple. I use a beech bass drum and maple toms. Back in the day I owned 10 piece kit made from beech wood. That was when I noticed the bigger beech drums had a wondrous focused presence. Beech bass drums are fantastic to work with.

I'm still watching, currently on the walnut kit, but just needed to come and say that bass drum at low tuning through the room mics sounds absolutely phenomenal. It sounds MUCH bigger, with almost a clipped 'boom'. Incredible. Having watched the rest of the video now, I can also say that, snares aside, I much preferred the sound of the walnut, at both tunings. Just beautiful. A stunning finish too, though I'd also like to see it in high gloss too. Does anyone know why the walnut doesn't have re rings? I know it's a thicker shell anyway. Is that the only reason? Also, great playing. Tony is class, and I could listen to Tom play all day 🫡 Fantastic video. And an extra bonus you used the sizes of my gigging kit. Also Tama, but a Silverstar.

I love the inlays that Tama puts in the re-rings and on the outer-shell, and the type of wood they use for these drums, the grain, it is so much more detailed and darker, the interior grain looks just as good inside as out. I love these drums man, thanks for the video
The walnut is definitely my favorite out of the three woods. It has a mahogany-like low-end bloom that really made a difference at the higher tuning. Plus, the walnut bass drum retained more of its punch when only the Room Mics were selected. A very well-done and very useful comparison!

I listened to this -remarkable- comparaison (keep up your work, we love it) using a pair ATC ACM25A tuned with the 12” SCM.1.12PRO sub, and the most dynamic, accurate and pleasant-to-hear kit, especially with the ambient miking but also with the close-in, is the Walnut. It offers everything a drummer could ask for, even at low tuning. FTY I don't know the price of the kits, I just listen to them.
Probably the best high end kit.... period. I can't really pick a winner but if I must it would be the maple. All the kits are beautiful and sound fabulous. LOVE the ending

Hard choice and your video/audio gives the best indication and insight. Now an interesting idea is to have each drummer;both are incredible!) play the kits at each tuning, as I believe each drummer have their own touch and feel at all tunings. Great job as always DCP!🤜🏼🤛🏽🥁👍🏽💯
Well done, gentlemen! As a jazz drum enthusiast who prefers higher, opening tunings, I loved this comparison. All drums sounded excellent, but the walnut and Bubinga stood out to me at bop tuning. Walnut toms were great and open with just right amount of sustain, and the Bubinga toms surprised me: lovely high note but nicely controlled sound. I preferred that to the maple’s longer sustain. For snares, Bubinga was best with walnut right behind it-crisp and focused! Thanks for this video! Now if I only $6K to spend on a tiny drum set! 😂
They all sounded great but I liked the lower end sound of the Bubinga.I've had my Starclassic Birch since the 80s and I really enjoyed the comparisons.
I wasn't expecting the Walnut to be my favorite, but indeed it was in both tunings. The resonance was just more full than the others, with the best length and sound of overtones. I really wanted the Bumbinga to be my favorite, as it looked the best and well the wood name speaks for itself, but the drums just speak a bit quick and too controlled, however I think it works for the snare. Can I go with the Bumbinga snare, Maple kick, and Walnut toms?? 🤔😁
I heard less of a difference in the lower tunings. Very small, they all sounded great. In the higher tunings, I liked the sound of the walnut shells. Again they all sounded great ✌🏼
Lovely comparison. The amazing similarity between the room sound and the mic'd up sound, especially on the walnut kit, is quite indicative of the extraordonary quality of these drums. No birch? (PS: plot twist - Tama also makes some of the absolute beefiest and best designed, best value microphone stands on the planet... so the Tama rep might ask "Yes, but did you use those for the mics for your recording?" 🤫😉)

I love the non chalant promotion of the Meinl cymbals and Rogers drums in this video!! Tama drums are nice enough on their own to sell themselves to customers who can afford them. They don’t need a salesperson to sell their brand. Just look and listen!! I like the walnut kit the most. Though the bubinga shells are right there with walnut.
As good as kits get. I just would be too afraid to take it out of the house, so I'll stick to my fabulous Brooklyn. Your reviews are the best in the business, so for Tama to decline your offer speaks volumes about them tbh. So what if a T shirt mentioned another brand?? The world has millions of brands in it and when we buy a product, we integrate it into our existing range of products from across the spectrum. Manufacturers need to be comfortable with this. Out of the 3 thought maple had annoying ring and found boring but the finish was beautiful. The bubinga which generally love in snare sounded really low at high tune and sounded great if wanted low tuned drum and that it. I wonder if it possible to get beautiful character if tuned even higher or if it just low . Personally like my drums tuned lower but want options. So will say definitely from what I heard, the Walnut is way more diverse high and low with total beautiful sound. That’s what I’d get :) Also the new Meinl hats and 22 inch ride, super sweet. The bubinga seemed to be the most distinct, with the maple and walnut sounding nearly identical to my ears. I currently own a Star maple and Star walnut kit and once owned a Star bubinga kit. Never experienced a significant difference in tone with my ears. Best drums on the planet. Always tabbed 18” kicks as jazz drums, but I’m starting to think that I could actually gig with them. I’m not getting any younger and the weight benefits are making me think. Lower pitches than I expected are evidently possible.
Perhaps a drum head comparison series. Clear Ambassador on the bottom and go through to available options on top. Try different tunings, different size lay outs, different species of wood. Once you are done with that, do the same for Evans and then Aquarian.
I understand that I like more to not have the reinforcement rings. May a bubinga 6mm will be the best, but as I listen my favourite will be walnut kit with the bubinga snare drum
Question: In all of the bass drum examples where exactly was the bass drum pedal beater striking the head (eg: off center or dead center)? I got a Tama HP50 to play my 18" bass drum since it has a beater height adjustment, but it looks like you were using something else. The sound was good and boomy even if the beater wasn't hitting dead center. 18" bass drum minutiae, I know.
These comparisons are helpful. All around I liked the sound of the walnut kit the most.

Pretty sure the Meinl channel uses a bubinga star kit and in every video the cymbals are getting outshone by that gorgeous kit. It is amazing.

Those ARE heavy bass drum spurs for such a tiny bassdrum. The walnut high tuned and the bubinga low tuned sound good to me.
These bass drums weigh almost nothing. Plus the trade off is that it actually stays put, unlike most “light weight” spurs.

I have a poisoned Tama Imperial Stars with Power Hoop rims that I love, but I'm happy with any of those. 😅
