    Sup Dude, Nice vid! I have the zt1 50 as well and to recap had it in to cub last season for bad deck vibration. Cub changed blades and bearings and belt, when i got it back it was much improved but by season end it was terrible again and belt really took a beating. I recently just bought another belt 2 inches shorter to take out some of the slack and its a little better for the moment but still noisy and vibrates. Yesterday i bought the mulch kit so i want to see if the mulch blades have any positive effect. If its still bad after some cuts on the phone with cub again. I have 2 years on the warranty to figure it out. Most of the belt slap is between the pto and return pulleys and the deck goes from 0 to 4.5 inches thats alot of misalignment in the belt depending on what level you cut on. I love this mower but when im on it and the deck is rough it just pisses me off! I looked st the deere zt in this category and theres no comparison in construction to the Cub. Cub hit alot of marks but a smooth deck is crucial. Nice job on the vid👍👍

      G4 Outdoors Installed the new mulch blades and cut the grass, still vibrates and varies in intensity. It almost goes away at times and then starts building up momentum the other way and gets a rattle sound in the mix. The cut was beautiful with no stragglers and fine clippings. It has all new components for the second time. I do want to investigate the extension spring a little closer because it lays right on the deck, maybe thats adding to the noise. Aside a bent crankshaft which i dont think is the issue it has to be a bad designed deck. Every zt1 i have heard sounds like garbage, I’m betting alot of people if not all have a variance of this deck issue but some dont give it a second thought or it doesnt bother them enough to worry about it. Thanks for the reply and I will keep you posted👍

    I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

      I'm wondering if some of your issues are due to the kawasaki motor. The Kohler on mine gets decent fuel economy and no deck vibration. Mine isn't any louder than my old yard king 54" either.
      My yard king doesnt have a chute guard, and I use it on the rough areas. That gaping hole for a chute on the Cub is waiting to star in the next Final Destination movie.
      I've never liked the deck hose contraption.
      As for missing spots as you mow, mine does fine until I hit something to make the deck shake. That's when I get a few stragglers. It does have too much play in it for sure.
      I tell people it's a quality mower, not a high quality mower. It's solid and strong but has a few things about it I'd like to see different.

    I just bought one and so far zero issues. I'm 71 and have had many mowers and grass on the deck is simply called CLEAN YOUR MOWER. Also I never mow wet grass unless absolutely necessary and that solves half your problems. Every deck has to be scraped once in a while. I still have my RZT 22 (From 2004)that has 760 hrs. and still has the same spindles. This new ZT 1 is a nice upgrade.

    I have the exact model ZT1 50" fabricated deck for about 3 months now. I typically mow once a week. I love it. It's my first riding mower ever so I cannot compare it with other mowers. It cuts great and it has great power to do the job on my 2.5 acre wooded lot with about 3/4 acre of uneven grass area. I have straggler issue only when my son cuts the grass and I think it's his fault. I don't have an issue with the vibration. The chute throws clippings pretty far so I am thinking about getting a mulching kit. The clean out port works well for me. I usually lower it to 1" on my concrete driveway with the chute pointing to to the wooded area and run for about 5 minutes and it is enough to clean my deck. I do have grass clippings on top of the deck and I usually blow the deck area before after each cut. The seat is comfortable but it needs a strap to prevent it from slamming the frame so I carefully lower it to prevent any damage to protect my investment. Overall I have no complain so far.

      Had mine for a month, and I agree with you. I will get stranglers with grass that is too tall, but not even on a bi-weekly basis to speak of. I just did an acre and had about 5-8 stragglers. It did not Make me long to mow them down, no big deal IMO. If you take into account working on the machine and cleaning it, I think the engineering is top notch. Everything is so easy to get to. Kawasaki engine, best in the business, (a big selling factor for me). If I want a better cut quality, (and I would like the best), I bet some different blades would do the trick. Big deal. My deck is fine also, and I don't understand the complaints. It makes me wonder if our society is going nuts. :)

    I had a ZTR50 that I now have to replace after 14 years. I found many of the same issues with it as you pointed out here. Its nice to see an honest review. Good job my man. I was leaning to a new ZT50 but now I think I'm leaning back to a JD. That deck guard is the deciding factor for me, I always mow my 5 acres with the guard tied up open.

    • @g4outdoors
      @g4outdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the guard up or off 100% of the time. I want the grass to be thrown as far as possible. That isn’t feasible on some properties though. Most of the time for video reviews, I leave the guard down just to “keep it safe” lol. (Do as I say, not as I do) we take pride in not letting any company persuade our opinions. Thanks for the comment Michael!

    Just got my Ikon x 52. It was between the CC and the Ariens. I love it. The tires are small but I have no hills at all in my yard. You can also put 20x10x8 tires on the back and the icon XL front casters and tires on no problem. When the tires wear out I will be going that route. But it’s been fantastic and I’m glad I didn’t get the CC.

    Hi there G4 Outdoors. I bought a ZT1 a few weeks ago, before I watched your review video. Well, I’ve mowed 3 times now, and it seems to be cutting really well. Haven’t noticed enough stragglers to worry about. I wonder if some of the vibration is from high rpms? I only run it about 1/2 throttle when mowing. And I’m OK with putting that cable on the seat myself. I know that’s Not your point, but oh well. So far I’m pleased with the CC. My last mower was a JD tractor, and this is an upgrade!

    I bought the ZT1 54 inch cut that comes with the Kohler 7000 series motor. I cut almost 4 hilly acres and used half a tank of gas, not sure why he’s burning so much fuel. Maybe the difference between the Kawasaki and the Kohler not sure. I researched in this class of mower for quite a while. I chose this mower over the Ikon XD , the Toro Timecutter 50 inch and also the Badboy MZ magnum. Test rode all of them this one stole the show. Blew me away. No stragglers in my yard , nice even cut and it does lay down some pretty decent stripes. No issues going up hill or sidehilling. Also my deck does not move , a lot of it may depend on who set your mower up all I know is I’m very happy with mine and my yard is demanding , this machine not only cut my mowing time in half but made cutting my yard much easier. Just wanted to let you all know. At the end of the day get what you like and feel most comfortable with

    I have the 54 inch cut with the Kohler engine. I have used it for 4 months with no problems. Vibration is definitely not an issue. Also there is not a straggler issue either. It does use gas compared to my 20 hp diesel tractor and ear protection is definitely recommended. I cut 3 lawns with one that is very hilly. It does a good job. The mud flying is minimal. This guy seems to have a problem with Cub Cadet. Remember this is a 3 grand mower. For a couple thousand more you could have a commercial mower I suppose.

      My ZT-1 50" with the Kawasaki engine does leave stragglers, and I am only going about 1/2 speed at a 3.5" height. But I bet I can fix that if I really need to. Mine does not seem to have any bad vibration, (other than the deck kicking a bit when I turn on the PTO, which I think is normal for this machine), and I don't think it is operating abnormally, (I am pretty mechanically inclined, including engineering degrees and lots of manufacturing experience). Some steep little hills in my yard also, and have had no scalping no matter what direction I attack the hill. Overall, after using, looking at and adjusting things, I think the machine is engineered very "smartly". It has a great engine, a great chassis 2" square tube frame that will probably never rust away or bend, (even if rolled over), everything is easy to get to to work on and a oil change could not be easier. I understand the pumps are a proven product used on many different brand residential machines for quite a while. I would buy it again.

    Important Note for this machine, or risk a possible fire IMO:
    After I am done mowing, like many people I am sure with this machine, I remove the floor and use compressed air to blow all the grass from the pulleys and the top of the deck, and do the deck wash thing. But one other area has to be cleaned, which may even prevent a fire. The battery area with the electric wire connections accumulates grass. Don't forget to lift the seat and lightly let it rest on the foot rest of the machine, (you don't have to let if drop like a clod. You can control this seat, right? I would prefer a cable though), and blow the grass out of the battery area. Grass will stack up on both sides of the battery, and possibly get the electrical connections wet. I think I am going to look for some grease for electrical connections and use it on all the connections. Not just for corrosion reasons as the manual states, but to make sure the wet grass and moisture involved stays out also. Still gonna clean it every time though. :)
    Keep your eye on that battery area.

    • @g4outdoors
      @g4outdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that heads up! The grass sure likes to congregate on top of the deck, I didn’t think about the battery.

      @EarthSurferUSA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@g4outdoors For the grass on the deck, I find in mostly packed under the outside pulley's "Plastic safety guards". They are just fastened on with a few bolts into the top of the deck, so I will use a dremel type tool to make more "windows" for the grass to escape. It should work, but if not, it is only a couple pieces of plastic I can buy for cheap. I would bet it would be a good improvement though. Grass does get packed under that plastic more than it should, even dry and short cuts.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or I might just take the damn plastic guards off. I know enough not to tickle a rotating belt driven pulley. :)

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Final decision: I am mtaking the plastic guards off, and be rid of having to blow them out and any mechanical problems the packed grass could cause. If the removal of them effects the cut quality at all, (and I doubt it will), I could always cut them, (as mentioned above), and put them back on. Kids or pets running around could be a risk though,---but not in my yard. If it was, I would lock them all up in the garage until I was done cutting the grass. :)

    Mine is definitely loud, ear protection is recommended. I mow about an acre twice a week and am very happy with my ZT1. For me cut is pretty good and I don't notice excessive vibration while mowing. Not noticing stragglers with the Extreme mulching blades but did have a few with the stock blades, not something I worry about. Engaging the blades however is rough. No matter how much I lower engine speed when I pull the pto button the decks shakes and vibrates violently for a couple of seconds. Deck wash isn't that effective but in my limited experience, I'm just a homeowner, never is. Mower should have some kind of cable to prevent the seat top from hitting the front of the mower. Overall better than I expected for what I do and way better than my old JD 125. That said, I am just a homeowner with limited experience with other mowers.

      My 3rd mow today, and the PTO engagement seems to be calming down. Just a little bump today, (full throttle). You may not have experience with other mowers, and neither do I. But I have gotten stragglers, and one thing that G4 and I do not have experience with (and he should have to do this review), that you do have experience with,---is the optional blades that are available, (which you said cured your straggler happenings). I don't see his vibration problem on my 50", it runs well. So if all I might want to do is change the blades for a better cut,---what is there to complain about? It has an excellent engine, chassis, and is well engineered overall. I can try some other blades, big deal.

    I appreciate reviews and watch them frequently. I usually go through a plethora before I purchase an item. However , I really think this guy does not like Cub Cadet, he also must haven’t gotten a lemon or is rough with it. I researched for months before purchasing the ZT 1 50”. I looked at Ariens etc. First of all, nothing is perfect. I hope to purchase an item that has overwhelming positives and I will deal with or modify the rest. On my machine...deck does not move at all. Cuts like a beast without stragglers. Chews up grass like no other. I personally do not need arm rest. I could add seat leash but I have yet to need to put that seat down. Like another poster, I would be more gentle. Might put a towel down to protect. However, how often do you need to put the seat down? I spent my money on this thing. I will treat it nicely. Seat is super comfy compared to others. Even though it is zero turn, ride is pretty smooth. I do not necessarily want a deck that is totally rigid. I want some give. It’s designed with rollers (several, love bull nose). However, I do not stand on mine. Don’t need to. But again my deck does not move like his. Gas? I can can over 4 times on my 1/2 acre on a mostly full tank. I don’t blaze either. I enjoy mowing and let the 50” do the work. That is a lemon or engine issue which would be Kawasaki not Cub Cadet. Most mowers in this range have 18” tires. I love my 20”. Much better ride. Almost deal breaker for me in this price range. Height adjustments are easy and awesome. Deck lowering mechanism is great.
    I just wanted to express my experience. It is has been great thus far. I reviewed/examined/road many mowers. I was shocked that a Cub Cadet is sitting in my garage but I am impressed in the residential range. I worked with a professional landscaping company that used the expensive fancy machines. I cannot afford those and do not need them. To each his own but don’t throw this mower out.

      Always get the most that you can afford. Biggest motor and biggest deck,,,,,, but make sure you get the best bang for your buck as well. Sometimes the motor size will be the same on a 54 as a 60, so the 54 will have a better HP to cut power ratio. Also, in general, the bigger the mower, the more stable and comfortable it will be. Currently I am running a Toro TimeCutter 54” with the MyRIDE system. LOVE IT, on the other hand, I loved the Ariens Apex 60”. Both of these mowers were powered correctly, but the 60” Ariens covered more ground because of the width. The less time you spend on the mower, the longer it will last. I truly hope that helps or puts some insight on the matter.

    • @g4outdoors
      @g4outdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coastalcarolinafishingnc5199 Ok, so you’re going to make me dive a little deeper. There is a significant line in the sand when you jump from one price point to another. I’ll break them into 3 categories. First will be the budget models. Let’s say 1,500 -$3,000. The only thing you are paying for is a mass produced throw away model. Cheap motors, both drive and engine, cheap materials in the frame and deck, very low grade drive motors that shouldn’t be used to tow or use on hills. Just everything is built for a 3-5 year mower. Now let’s talk about, oh, 🤔 $3k - $5k. Now you are looking at build quality along with upgrades to the materials used in the frame and deck. Middle (residential) grade engines and drive motors. Although the drive motors are still a little anemic, they are quite a bit better than the low end drive motors. The engines are designed to withstand a higher workload and are built a little better than the lower end engines. Estimated life of these mowers should reach 5-8 years without any major issues. 3rd being $5-$6k and above, now you are looking at reputation, build quality, high end (residential) motors and engines, more comfort features. Engines that are used on entry level commercial mowers. Drive motors that are built for even more payloads and run time with the ability to change the hydraulic fluid. Frame and deck quality built to last you a lifetime (frame and deck only).
      Now let’s combine all of these levels. Every single unit in every class run the exact same engines (Kawi, B&S, Kholer, what have you), they all run the same exact drive motors built by Hydro Drive. They all run the same pulleys, belts, seats, ignitions, PTO’s. The only real difference is build quality, reputation, and most importantly, DEALER SUPPORT! If you buy a unit from Lowe’s and you don’t have that brand of a dealer in your area, good luck getting anything fixed in a timely manner. If you buy from a dealer in your area you are going to be better taken care of as a customer. They aren’t going to give two craps about someone who didn’t buy from them and needs their help. Well kind of lol. I’m on my phone and I have no idea what your reply question was at this point because I can’t scroll back 🤣.
      Hers the deal. If you want to spend $3k or less, take your pick, they are all throw away mowers. If you want something $3-$5k, start looking at build quality and features. If you want something $5k and above, go to an independent dealership and get help in choosing the right mower for you. Or just do that anyway. They will put you in a mower that is designed for your particular needs. If you make me type this much again, it’s going to be a while before I have to use the bathroom again to have the time to sit and reply 🤣.

    I've had mine running for only 2 hours now, and the cut quality is OK, (not great but OK), for the deep 12" average grass I just cut. I did have one problem with the handles not being even when both in neutral, (between forward and reverse), and it did not say in the owners manual how to adjust it. Turns out, it was easy to adjust, at the linkage next to the pump.
    The deck wash attachment needs a cap. Grass and dirt will gather in there and block the water spray nozzle in the deck. Also, the plastic molded threads of the deck wash attachment are a slightly different pitch than a standard water hose thead, and will not screw on all the way. I have a feeling the deck is not made in the same factory as the tractor. If I need a better cut quality, I will look into some different blades if available for the machine. Was it you in another vid who mentioned "Notched, High Lift" blades? My deck is loud, but it does not vibrate much at all when running. If I had a hand lever for the PTO, with the modulation of a motorcycle clutch, I am sure we would be able to actuate the PTO very smoothly, compared to a light switch delivering 23hp to the belt. I think if they had a clutch that took about 3 seconds to engage smoothly, there would be a lot less complaints. I can live with it. I don't have any regrets buying the machine for my 1.5 acres. Plus, a zero drive machine makes lawn mowing fun. For the first time in my life, I can't wait for the grass to grow again. :)

Next time I stop in there I will ask them about different blades they may have for the machine. I am also cutting at 3.5" high. I don't know if a lower cut will cure the straggler issue yet. My yard is too steep for the Ariens Ikon x 42. So I would have to choose the Cub. If my yard was flat, I could definitively say Ariens. Next year I should be getting the Ariens Ikon xl 50, which is geared more for my yard with the wider tires to hold the cornering. Without a doubt, if I knew what I know now, I would never have bought the Cub. I regretted selling my tractor after receiving this cub immediately. Like I say in the video, If you don't care about cut quality, the cub is a fantastic mower. I honestly believe the warranty on the deck pullies will be utilized within the next 3 years as well. I just expect a better cut for the money and the Ariens defiantly provides. Was that too much info? LOL. I like your question!

      G4 Outdoors Probably should have held out for the ZT2, it has larger/wider tires (including larger front wheels) than the ZT1....and again on the cut quality, mine has been superb. Saying “if you don’t care about cut quality” is a bit unfair, I’ve seen every Ultima video on TH-cam and Instagram and I’ve only seen exactly 2 people other than yourself to have anything close to a complaint about cut quality. One of the guys was going full speed through nearly foot tall lawn grass & the other was going full speed through nearly knee high field grass/weeds, both indicated that some stragglers are to be expected under those conditions with any residential mower. Even Consumer Reports rates the cut evenness, side discharge and mulching quality as ‘excellent’, their highest rating.
      It should also be noted that the IKON-X was in the group of mowers that Ohio State University tested for cut quality (independent test, not a test sponsored by Cub) and the Cub came out on top as having the best overall cut quality. (That’s where Cub gets it’s “best in class” claim from.). Just thought that folks should have as much info as possible, obviously opinions will vary.

      @@g4outdoors I would adjust everything well like deck leveling, and maybe even go to the dealer to get the mulch blades, (or maybe a "High Rise" blade) before you send it back. Mine does not have any vibration problems, but I would not mind a tad better cut quality, so I will use the new blades. I think overall this machine is very well engineered and manufactured, (the frame welds are almost Custom Bicycle weld quality), with probably the best chassis and engine in it's class. I think two other factors I need to wire down is my speed when cutting, (I go about half throttle, because the ground is rough), and deck height. I have only run at 3.5" height so far, but 3" might get rid of the few stragglers the stock bales leave behind. Fix it. it feels good! :)

      @@g4outdoors No, you lifted the seat, "let it go", and then it plopped over. It is something that is super easy for a human being to control, even a child can control the unbridled seat. I bet some dogs can too. I agree that a cable is a worthwhile inexpensive thing, but we are man who thinks, (the dog would have to be trained), and it is pretty easy to figure out how to lift a seat and control it's decent. To lift the seat and just drop it, is not an argument as much as it is just misuse IMO. Sorry man. I never dropped my seat. And if the deck didn't have that big lip around the under side of the deck for the grass to stick it would make a difference if that was gone. It is a pig on gas.
