About 25 years ago, a stranger mocked me with "Get a tan! You look like a ghost!" I didn't let that influence me. Now, at 54, I'm loving the skin I'm in!
My flat mate says girls with tans look better. I'm 33 and I do have some aging on my forehead but I will have the last laugh when I don't age like him!
I’m a black woman with super dark skin and I was using this stupid “sunscreen” moisturizer by the brand Simple and it only had SPF 15. I tossed it and got La Roche Posay sunscreen in SPF 60.
Candice Dodd This might sound weird but I think it’s great you use sunscreen. I’ve know so many people who have darker complexions that don’t use sunscreens because they think they don’t need it cause they don’t burn.
Listen to her. I'm 81 years old and my skin is so blotchy with sun spots. They started showing up in my early 40's. I wish we had the products back when I was younger.
@Desislava Atanasova Have you tried the La Roche Posay Shaka Fluid? It's meant to have a very high PPD. That might help. Blue jeans are over SPF 100 if I remember correctly. So you could wear those and loose fitting synthetic colored fabrics for your shirts. They have some of the highest UV blocking potential. Idk if applying the sunscreen first would make a big difference if you are applying it on top of other products. That could be preventing it from forming a cohesive film on the skin.
@Desislava Atanasova sunprotective clothing. Some cover you well and are cooling amd/or breathable etc. Maybe the quatity you apply or/and the rate at wich you apply are the cause.Maybe its the sunscreen that doesnt work for you, maybe it rubs off too easily
Thank you dr dray for encouraging us to wear sunscreen. I am 15 and just got myself a sunscreen and salicylic acid facewash yesterday!!! Excited to start my sunscreen journey😊
You should do a video, "Doctors hate these simple tricks", of things that you guys actually hate seeing people do. Like, fads that spread on the internet and destroy skin, which lead to people visiting you guys. My sister constantly wants to try things from Tik Tok, but I'm always super weary.
Zach M I could think of those black peel off masks that rip your skin 😣 or the past trending mask of charcoal powder and Elmers glue! I am guilty of trying that years ago 😩
@@Elithia.m I ALMOST bought into those peel off masks 😂 I thought it looked super cool but yeah after about 6 months of watching Dr Dray, I now cringe 😂
"A tan is a type of skin injury and both a tan and a burn are both types of skin injuries that put you at risk for premature photoaging, compromise the immune system in your skin and contribute to skin cancer formation." The idea that a tan is a skin injury is mindblowing. Everyday is a school day. Thank you for making it possible for me to save my skin, Dr. Dray. My hero.
My mom buys these, she doesn't get the tanning is bad for your skin thing. It helps her skin not get as dry while she's tanning, that's about it. She's fair skinned so she still burns.
Hi , I have all that hyper pigmentation and dark spots. My face is a mess. I need help like yesterday. I can't afford a dermatologist. Your advice will be appreciated.
@@diliaortiz1939 use a physical mineral sunscreen which blocks the sun as opposed to chemical sunscreens that absorb the rays (heat up), then reflect them off your skin. when you have hyperpigmentation and or melasma the physical sunscreen is better bc heat is less absorbed. the sun activates melasma and hyperpigmentation so blocking it and wearing wide brimmed tightly woven hats are your best defense
@@NadiaDakroub I think it depends where you live. In Uk, chemical is cheap and very effective. I heard the same in Europe. In US chemical is not so effective. I know it's effective because my hyperpigmentation that I treated did not return. I use physical on the bottom eyelid area, a very small amount. In Uk it cost around £4.50 for 200ml for chemical..
You can dermaroll on the hyperpigmentation area. I recommend a small needle like 0.25mm, so you don't need numbing cream. Once it's gone, you don't need to roll anymore, it be a waste of money. Sunscreen is all you need, every 2 hours. It will take around 3 to 6 months for the pigmentation to fade. If it's already fading with sunscreen, which it can, then you don't need to dermaroll. It depends how deep the pigment is.
Love how you emphasize 'A tan is a type of skin injury.' I guess everyone should appreciate their natural (untanned/unbleached) skin tones by the way. I feel that the fashion industry should promote this idea, instead of praising pale skin (as in Asia) or tanned skin (as in the West) only.
I always get looked at weird for having an umbrella on standby for sunny days... i wish I was in a place where it was normalized to not want SKIN CANCER lmaoo
I’m an esthetician on the coast of South Carolina. I want to play this video on a loop in my treatment room. The social acceptance theory is what I struggle with most with my clients. Thank you!
Not gonna lie, this was a wake up call for me. I used the products you mentioned last summer -- and while I was successful in getting a tan and not burning, have now realized the damage to the skin that I might've still caused. Thank you!
I tanned from the age of 17 until 36! Tanning beds daily, oils in the sun!!! I'm 38 now and working hard to undue the damage I have done. People don't understand how dangerous these behaviors are. I now spend a lot of time getting facial treatments and my derm is my best friend. I finally grasp the many "lectures" I received for so many years. I've been lucky that I don't look like a piece of leather or have skin cancer yet. It's scary. I hear my still tanning friends say "I burn, but it turns to tan." I. Now ready to combat that comment with an educated answer! Thank you for this video!!!
I’ve always been heckled for having pale skin but started lathering on the sunscreen in my teens and 20s. My biggest struggle is convincing my outdoorsy husband to wear proper sunscreen 🥴 I get the response “I’m fine” gahhhhh!
I literally watch your videos all the way through, no skipping. I just love hearing you talk about all things dermatology. I’ve never heard someone speak with so much knowledge and passion about skincare.
My coworkers tried to tell me that I should get a tan since I’m so pale and I was like HECK NO I LIKE MY PASTY SELF THANK YOU 👻 thankfully another coworker who’s dealt with skin cancer piped up and said I was the smart one 😅
You have to be strong of character to go against the trendy style of being tanned. Standing out because you are different from the mass majority. I'm very fair skinned, have dark brown hair but freckles (which I always hated) and I burn very easily. I'm 61 years old and still to this day, people make random comments that I have no tan at all in the summer. Oh and yes, I have had skin cancer too so don't be afraid to stand out by your paleness.
Micaela Foster you are the smart one. I tanned when I was younger and now in my older years have had skin cancer requiring a MOHS and a couple excisions. I now see the dermatologist every six months to get my precancerous spots zapped off. A tan was so not worth it.
@@paulachristie7807 I never tanned intentionally lying in the sun to bake but sunscreen wasn't popular when I was young. We had a swimming pool and I played outside a lot when I was a child. Result: Baso cell carcinoma with MOHS on my right lower eyelid at 53 years old. I see my dermatologist once a year and my sunscreen is precious
Lol, that's the barometer i use when assessing how much damage I've had after summer ends. If my skin gets any darker than I am naturally, I look at it as either insufficient sunscreen habits, or a failure in sunscreen. Which has made me embrace my skin more. Everyone's God given skin color is gorgeous as is 👍
I have a darker skin tone and until today I thought that i don’t have to put sunscreen everyday just because of my color. Thank you Dr. Dray you just saved my skin.
Such excellent advice as always. I was diagnosed with Basal Cell and then Squamous Cell at age of 40 and my derm told me it was most likely due to growing up in FL and playing outside year round without sun protection. Thankfully it's been 10 years since last diagnosis and I am now religious about sunscreen!
People congratulate me on my "healthy" tan all the time, but when I tell them I just use super dark fake tan and a spf50+gel every day, I'm suddenly crazy lol
@@ritanichole I've got the tan from St. Moritz and the sunscreen from Garnier, but I always try new products, so this is just what I use at the moment :)
I am level one which is why I wear jeans, long sleeve shirt and sunscreen on my face and chest. I look crazy in Texas but I will age gracefully and not have cancer so it’s worth it!!
I feel the same. My husband thinks I'm ridiculous at times but I dont care because I will look stunning when I'm old compared to most light skinned women who tanned lol
@Denise Vasquez Lemrick You don't really need **that** much sun to get your recommended levels of vitamin D. You could easily just absorb it on places like your forearms, which is preferable to your face and neck. Or you could just take a supplement, either way. Most calcium supplements often contain vitamin D and other trace minerals necessary for bone health.
I always get asked why I’m not trying to tan when I go on holiday/vacation or in the summer, people can’t seem to get their heads around the fact I’m comfortable being “pale”. It took me years to accept myself and I did use to use these products as a teenager but always got heat rash/prickly heat anyway 🤦♀️
Same. Glad I had the guts to go against the pressure soon enough, while the ppl I grew up with still “work on their tan”. It’s so much more liberating and time saving to just love yourself as you are.
I used tanning oil when I was 16, it was cloudy out so I didn’t think I would get much sun.. I went home with sun poisoning. Not sunburn, straight poisoning. I passed out walking back to the house, & woke up in blisters while throwing up..never again will I use it.
I wish the damage of the sun is immediate so people including myself would have gotten sun smart in our earlier years. I’m paying now. Thank you for advocating sun protection.
I am 53 years old & as a child, we would go to the pool, lay out, go fishing & NEVER have sunscreen on back then!! I am a sunscreen 'Queen' now but I think back at all the damage I did to myself!! The sunburns were numerous!! Sunscreen wasn't big back then!! I am afraid of getting skin cancer now!! I hope & pray that people with children, teens, even adult children will show them this video!! Thank you Dr. Dray for getting this video out!!!
54, Same here Kel. I wish I had known too! All the sunscreen in our day was alcohol based and burned like a son of a gun🔥. I’m an SPF worshiper now & religious about my yearly Derm visit.
@@cindylyssikatos3182 My parents never even used any on us!!! I guess they didn't grow up with it so we didn't either!! Oh well, I learned the hard way!! Now, I probably drive people nuts about using sunscreen!! LOL, I don't care just trying to give some good advice!! 🤗
I'm 56 and I identify too. I had a pre melanoma about 20 yrs ago and that was a big wake up call. I embrace my fair skin now and always wear sunscreen. I hate those age spots that have popped up too.
My idol! You changed my skin forever. Suffered with acne for 10 plus years! Learning from your videos I have figured out my skin and a regimen that has reduced my breakouts! I can not express how grateful I am for your honestly and the knowledge you share. Acne is the worst and really was frustrating!! You have really changed my skin and more importantly my life! I am forever grateful to you! Infinite xo’s
At 56 I remember laying out in the sun when I was young slathered with baby oil. Never tanned but now I'm paying the price. I have age spots and my chest is ruined! Although I still look young for my age (at least that's what people tell me) I wish I would have known better. Now I am diligent with sunscreen but it took a long time to find one I liked so I would wear it every day. So glad I found your channel, I was here when you only had a few subscribers and am so happy that so many people are following you! Hope your Mom is doing well!
I am exactly the same. I am 69 and paying heavily for laying in the sun with baby oil too. I love Dr. Dray and boy do I put on sunscreen every day even walking toward a door or window.
Yeah that was the times for sure sunblock not spoke about I’m from a boater family lived on the water 💦.. sun ☀️ every where .. but now nooo way long sleeve when u run 🏃♀️ sunblock every day !!☝️
@Faraway - back it up there. Just because you’re lifting up something doesn’t mean you have to put down another thing. Tanned skin is not dirty. Tanned skin is beautiful. All skin color is beautiful. Your words could really hurt somebody, be careful.
In Asia where I live, people would do anything to be pale, they bleach their skin and use fairness creams. Its just so crazy. People who have white skin get cheered on however, dark skin is not preferred but thankfully , its changing now. So be proud and happy with what you have.😄
Back then the "experts" told us it was good for us. As it turns out, 15 to 20 minutes is sufficient for vitamin D but longer can cause serious problems down the road. But none of us knew that back then. Following generations will hopefully benefit from all us boomer guinea pigs ... 😉
It’s embarrassing to see. I went to secondary school in central London and there was a little green outside the school. We would see people on their bikinis sunbathing in the concrete jungle. My friend who is also black (I am too) would always laugh and point them out.
I had a second degree sunburn at 11 years old. Other than that I was always diligent with sunscreen especially after that. Fast forward at 19 years old I ended up with Melanoma. I get so frustrated when people say “I don’t burn so I don’t need sunscreen” 🙄
When I was 13, I bought a book on skincare and read about the dangers of tanning. From then on, I've always maintained the pale look. I have no desire to look brown or orange lol
I never knew that a tan is a skin injury. My mom is Sicilian and always brags about how dark she gets in the summer. Heck, I wear shorts and shirts without sunscreen to tan. I only use sunscreen on my face (which my mom was laughing at me for a couple days ago). Now I'm going to put sunscreen on my legs and arms too.
Annie C. She’ll look pretty later in age either way. The goal should be to avoid skin cancer. The lessening of wrinkles is a nice byproduct. To sit and claim she’ll be pretty IF she doesn’t get any sun, is ridiculous.
YES THANK YOU 🙏🏻 I’m a Latina with really fair skin and have always been made fun of because I “needed a tan”. WELL LISTEN, I don’t need a tan, I need my health. I’d rather have peace of mind and enjoy my natural features. I will say, though, sometimes I fake-tan my legs because I grew up hiding them and now my arms are a little bit darker and the difference of colors bothers me 😂. But sunscreen always everywhere!🙌🏻
I’ve seen some people on tiktok struggling with some skin issues and I told them to sub to you because hopefully they can find something that could help them
I know this I’ve known this for years and used factor 50. My husband is one of these people who you are talking about. Chasing the sun and slowly burning. Thank you so much for this video I’ll show it to him. You are probably saving countless lives spreading the message about avoiding the sun as much as possible, like you would cigarette smoke. Thanks for all your videos Dr Dray ❤
You are the first person on skin care that talks about the number one factor of aging skin and the one that doesn't cost to avoid, I worked on an office for five years and wear a long sleeves uniform, every day and didn't expose myself to the sun , I live in a hot humid weather, with a beach near, let me tell you my skin was so smooth and even toned, people would comment on it, I use only drugstore products now with no frangance and sunscreen every day, because I could confirm the best cream out there is actually sunscreen, you are very honest and knowledgeable and more people should pay attention to professionals not celebrities when it comes to skin care.
I was a child in the 70s/80s when we had "Sun tan lotion" rather than anything that offered any protection. I wised up when I was a teenager and would use the highest protection available (which was no more than a 20). I'm 47 and I'm seeing the damage I accumulated in my youth showing up now. While my skin still looks good I wish we'd had this knowledge when I was a kid. Cover up your children folks!
I started tanning in the early 90’s after intense peer pressure to be tan. I’m naturally very fair skinned. I not only used tanning accelerator, but even used baby oil and laid out in the sun! In addition, I started going to tanning beds...until I was about 28 or so. Now at 43 years old I’ve already had a pre-cancerous place removed from my shoulder. The left side of my face shows really bad damage from driving and riding in the car, not only darker areas but I have a huge white spot in the middle. Thank goodness I’ve used sunblock for several years now however, the damage has been done. I sincerely hope that anyone looking at the comments will come across ours and think twice before going to a tanning bed or going out in the sun without protection!
I was born in mid 90's and didn't realize the importance of sun protection until I was 18. My mom never put any sunscreen on me even when we were on vacation. What's worse my family has always made fun of me for being so "pale" and encouraged me to get a tan. Sigh.
I started tanning as a child. Because my parents didnt reinforce spf, they made us do heavy farm work in the sun. I burned alot up and my family made fun of me because I was pale while the rest of the family was tan. I never could get color until I was an adult, I tanned because of insecurity and it helped my depression. I'm only 28 and ugh my aging. So kids......put in some god damn spf!
So glad for people like you dr.dry to inform me I didn't know these facts just 5 years ago I didn't even were spf and Im 35 now thank you so much . I'm glad I can educate my kids on spf and now I can do better for myself now. I was the parent who always used sunscreen on my children but not on me. I do now.
I put UV film on my windows. I didn't do it for skin reasons (I always have thick curtains up) though. I did it because I adopted a white cat and the vet said that she is more likely to get skin cancer and to keep her out of the window. I thought it would be cruel to not allow her to look out the window so I got UV blocking window film instead. It's not very expensive and it's easy to install. It's also renter-friendly too since it just comes right off when you move. You use soapy water to apply it so very little chance of causing any damage whatsoever.
As a child and teenager I wanted dark skin, so I was out in the sun from 10am to 2pm. In addition to putting my face in the sun because according to me it helped me with acne. I never got a tan and got blisters, ulcers, really bad sunburn, later I developed cystic acne and photosensitivity. Today I am a half-vampire and I LOVE sunscreen, I like to think that it is never too late to make good decisions.
Thank you Dr. Drey. I’m a redhead so I use sunscreen and never tan. I’ve been mocked many times for being so fair and not getting a tan. I don’t care what they say.
I can vouch for everything you're saying. I'm 65 and come from baby oil and tin foil waaayyy back before sunscreen. I have LOTS of sun spots from those days. Fortunately I don't have skin cancer; but 4 out of my 7 family members do have quite a bit of it. THANKS!! I LOVE your videos!!
Do these tanning lotions have warning labels about tanning increasing your risk of skin cancer and premature aging? Similar to the cancer warnings in cigarette ads? And if not, why not? 🤔
You are a skin care goddess! I won’t buy any skin care at all without first checking your channel. Your skin is perfection. You radiate good health, and classic beauty. As far as that tiny bit of sunscreen on your nostril, I doubt I’d have noticed it. Even I did, no doubt I’d have KNOWN it wasn’t a booger 😊 Thanks, Doc!
Excellent video. When I was a teenager and in my 20’s I was mocked for being “too pale” but now that I look 15 years younger than my actual age I’m laughing. I’m not trilled to have to put on sunscreen and be so conscious of the sun but I’d rather not have large chunks of my skin hacked out later thank you. It’s worth the effort. My youngest son graduated from highschool last year and he is also pale skinned, he was voted most likely to put sunscreen on during a rainstorm lol!
I have the fairest skin and used to burn while I was in the sun as a kid while my friends would get a tan. I finally learned that I needed to wear sunblock, long sleeves, and a hat, and now that I'm in my 40s people often comment that my skin looks really good for my age. Thank you, Dr. Dray, for this very informative video! You are great!
As a 15 year old, I'm glad I got acne or else I wouldn't had discovered Dr.Dray's channel when I was searching for solutions. My gut always felt skeptical towards all of these popular "skin" fads like tanning, using lemon peel oil, 'clean' skincare, etc. (Thankfully I never participated in them.) Seeing Dr.Dray debunk all these fads made me feel so reassured and I'm so confident that my skin will age beautifully, I don't care if my family tells me I'm overreacting as I lather my entire body with sunscreen cuz I know I'm taking care of myself.
Phototype 3 here - I grew up in Florida and rarely wore sunscreen as a kid because I had a really deep tan for so long. Once I was tanned I rarely burned unless out in the sun for so long. Now that I live in the north I am very pale and slather sunscreen like it’s my life. I wish I had worn it more a kid!
I really wish that this information was available when I was a teenager, and young adult . I have suffered 2 nd degree sunburn. Scared for life from this , and worked at a tanning bed . Would go tan 2 times a day . I destroyed my skin , my epidermis. Living in the south as a young adult, looking good was more important then health . Then the AZ sun to top it off ! Trying to repair my skin in my mid 30s . Use Retinol, and Glycolic acid. What else would help ? Also have suffered from severe cystic acne hormonal. Finally I have it under control, first time in my life. I was using is squalane, cannot seem to find a very affordable form of this. Oh I just started using a Laroche Posey that has ceramides and peptides in it. Any additional advice would help change my life for the better. Thank you so much, your advice has already help vastly improve my life with your videos . Keep up the good work ! Your a beautiful person !
Definitely important information. But, I do wish she’d also mention that we do need a measure, albeit small amount, of sun exposure. The hard stance on sunscreen is great but you do need sun exposer so your body can make use of the calcium you take in. Sun exposure is what our bodies need to acquire Vit D. There are far too many people who are Vit D deficient & it causes a HOST of issues. Like depression. Getting 15 min of sun exposure 1-2 a week is about ALL me need to synthesize the appropriate amount of Vit D. So direct sun, with at least both arms, face & legs (up to knees) for 15 min. Then do your sunscreen stuff. But Vit D is CRITICAL! There are supplements but because of stomach acid & digestion etc., the amount That actually is bioavailable after that, is so negligible.
Exactly! There have been studies that showed that Northern European countries (like Sweden or Finland for example), which have very little sun exposure, have many more cases of osteoporosis and vitamin d deficiencies in comparison to southern countries in Europe such as Italy or Greece. We literally need the sun to survive.
When I was a kid in the early 80s, we called it "suntan lotion" because the whole idea of sunscreen was not even on the radar. I remember then SPF 15 "sunblock" came on the scene and it seemed so ridiculous compared to the SPF 2 & 4.
Unfortunately most of the damage is already done. When I was kid my parents never used sunscreen. Lots of summers at the beach with zero sun protection. I ever burned but I was extra dark
Damage is also done for me too. I got a lot of bad burns as a kid, also got tanned over the summer...kind of depresses me now to think about, but I try to just turn that regret into motivation to wear sunscreen. Most of the time it helps!
Great video-I was raised on the beaches in Santa Cruz, CA and a tan was *everything* . I remember my family doctor telling me to wear a hat and avoid the sun, how I wish I would have listened to him now that I'm in my 50's and spending good money to combat all those years of aging sun exposure. When tanning oils came out in the early '80s with SPF 2 and 4 my friends and I started using them because we thought we were doing something to protect ourselves from skin cancer, but other kids wouldn't use it at all because they thought it would interfere with getting a tan! At least my 19-year-old son uses SPF 100 and a hat!
Concerning because the age of skin cancer diagnosis is getting younger and younger - 20's. Dr. Dray, would you consider doing a video along with skin cancer photos - the really bad reality of it? Sometimes people need to see what this kind of cancer does to people :(
Thanks for the video. Honestly this is the first time I hear that tanning, by itself (not tanning after the burn), is bad. I thought that a little sun, in the time of the day when the sun is not bad, would be ok, and that a gradually and slowly developing tanning effect was not a problem, and would increase our natural protection even. I have to research more about this..
Yup- I feel like a case study for this. As a teenage I used these products and I didn’t have to wait 20/30 years for my first melanoma. Got my first melanoma at 23 yrs old and second melanoma at 30. Oh don’t forget the tanning bed as a teenager too.
When I was 12 I started on tanning beds, by 17 I was going on the tanning beds twice a day. Now at 33 I only use fake tanner's and use SPF 50. I think I may have gotten away with any long term damage and take really good care of my skin, but oh how I wish I knew what I know no, when I was a young teen. We don't have any of those products here in the UK and all of our fake tan have to say in the bottle that they don't have any SPF in them and prolonged exposure to sun can cause ageing and skin cancer.
@Snake Eyes X well, in order not have vit D deficiency you could expose your legs to the sun for about 20 min every day, it's safe and should do the job :)
@@aiquesono I have a great doc who explained that it depends which longitude you live near. If you are too far north or south of the equator, the sunlight won't help produce enough vitamin D3 and you should supplement. Other docs have told me the same.
I’m 23, I’ve only had 4 really bad burns in my life despite wearing sunscreen. But I regularly never wear sunscreen out, only at the beach. I’m I still getting skin cancer? I just ordered a bunch of sunscreen from target just now after watching this video.
I am a 60 year old Male... In my younger years I made the mistakes of which you talk about in this video Dr Dray...25-30 years later my skin is heavily lined with wrinkles and I got skin cancer on my left facial cheek...Had to have 2 skin cancer operations 20 years ago ...So Dr Dray your advice is spot on!
I'm so glad that I found your channel. I was unknowingly, unintentionally being in the sun unexposed! I wear sunscreen year round now! And I encourage my family & friends too as well!! Thanks for the information.
Hahaha, thanks for the warning 😂 Thanks for always being an evidence based, logical, and trustworthy source for skincare and dermatology advice. It's made a huge difference to me and I'm so grateful to you for what you do.
The fact that instead of recording the video all over again because of the sunscreen on your nose, you just gave a heads up and made us have a little giggle together just made me love you more haha
I recently read an article about how vitamin D deficiency is on the rise and how you should go outside without sunscreen for at least 30 minutes to "soak up" some vitamin D. The article went on to say that the potential health problems associated with vitamin D deficiency is a lot more serious than skin cancer. I was wondering what your opinion on this is.
I lived in Florida and don't tan. My friends can't believe I don't lay out by the pool every day. I'm 67 and am not about to look any older than I already do. Thank you for educating people on this.
I wish I had this information when I was younger.. I haven't tanned in 8 or 9 years now but used to be an avid tanner completely oblivious to the damage and I really wish I had been presented with the knowledge and warnings that I know now.
This video really had some home truths in it for me. My sister in law...sun worshiper all her life...in her 40's she was stricken with breast cancer and has had several cancerous spots removed. She has just turned 50 and looks like an old leather couch. I had no idea the sun tanning could compromise your immune system. Certainly makes sense now. I'm of British/German/Scandinavian decent, painfully pale with that 'dark blond' hair...it's a very nondescript color...not blond not brown. I've never been crazy about the sun. Now in my 60's with great skin I'm glad. I appreciate every bit of advice from you Dr. Dray!
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray and everyone . Fantastic video . I remember as a teen people touted sitting in the sun was good for acne . I was never a sunbather but I had friends who could just sit for hours . I remember girls using sun visor and baby oil . Some even mixed a bit of iodine with the oil . Since starting to watching your channel (about a year ) I have done a 360 degrees turn in my skin care for the better . I can only speak for myself , but after watching your channel I think about 90 percent of what I did and used on my skin was so wrong for it . Have a great day . Love to mom and Tybee
Can you do a breakdown of all EltaMD’s sunscreens? They have a video posted talking about the different products, but the differences between some aren’t very clear!
Azzahra Farah Halvita Clear is aesthetically more lightweight, but I find it more hydrating than physical. Which is interesting because to my understanding, physical is supposed to be the more hydrating!
When I was in high school, my spanish class took a trip to Costa Rica. On our beach day, a girl covered herself in a tanning oil and laid out in the sun. She ended up turning so red she almost looked purple and flying home covered in blisters.
Went on a beach vacation recently and still got a tan despite slathering on a sunscreen with high UVA protection. I know that means I didn’t apply enough. I like the look of a tan, but I hope people learn that if they’re tanning through their sunscreen they need to switch brands or apply more. I’m going on another short vacation soon because of my sister’s wedding, and my goal is to finally learn to apply enough sunscreen that I don’t tan at all.
About 25 years ago, a stranger mocked me with "Get a tan! You look like a ghost!" I didn't let that influence me. Now, at 54, I'm loving the skin I'm in!

Candice Dodd This might sound weird but I think it’s great you use sunscreen. I’ve know so many people who have darker complexions that don’t use sunscreens because they think they don’t need it cause they don’t burn.
does it leave a white cast on you?? I think neutrogena makes a sunscreen that looks basically clear, and also gives a nice dewy glow
Listen to her. I'm 81 years old and my skin is so blotchy with sun spots. They started showing up in my early 40's. I wish we had the products back when I was younger.
You are precious!😘 Thanks for that advice!❤
I get told that I'm so pale and that I need a tan. My response is always "tanned skin is damaged skin".
I wear sunscreen everyday, rain or shine.
im going to start saying that lmao
You should reply that I don't need a tan or skin cancer

Thank you for making it possible for me to save my skin, Dr. Dray. My hero.

Right, what are you good for a minute
Marketing.
They may as well just go outside and tan and ruin their skin instead of buying a product that basically does nothing
My mom buys these, she doesn't get the tanning is bad for your skin thing. It helps her skin not get as dry while she's tanning, that's about it. She's fair skinned so she still burns.
i cant thank this woman enough, my skin is at its best thanks to her, sunscreen and fragrance absence made a huge difference in my hyperpigmentation
@@fearless6947 amazing that sunscreen can do that
Love how you emphasize 'A tan is a type of skin injury.' I guess everyone should appreciate their natural (untanned/unbleached) skin tones by the way. I feel that the fashion industry should promote this idea, instead of praising pale skin (as in Asia) or tanned skin (as in the West) only.

My hubby is same! 🙄🙄🙄
I think most men are the same. My husband will only wear sunscreen when we go on holiday
You should be grateful for your pale skin. It's the best
I can relate
I cant convince my husband that uva can also cause damage even if we’re indoors. 😫
You do you 👻
I’m a spray girl
Micaela Foster you are the smart one. I tanned when I was younger and now in my older years have had skin cancer requiring a MOHS and a couple excisions. I now see the dermatologist every six months to get my precancerous spots zapped off. A tan was so not worth it.
@@paulachristie7807 I never tanned intentionally lying in the sun to bake but sunscreen wasn't popular when I was young. We had a swimming pool and I played outside a lot when I was a child. It’s a good summer for me when I am just as pale at the end of the summer as I was at the beginning!🌞
Go Ginny. You are Goals! I am covering head to toe but still manage to get a slight tan...
Same xD I don't understand the whole needing a different summer and winter foundation shade thing cuz I stay protected and pale all year long
I love pale skin!

C. Lord I was that same teen. So stupid. Thank God didn’t do it religiously. Doing all I can now to stay UVA free and have good skin hygiene;)
Love the skin you were born in. Your beautiful pale skin is what makes you match your features
In Asia where I live, people would do anything to be pale, they bleach their skin and use fairness creams. Its just so crazy. People who have white skin get cheered on however, dark skin is not preferred but thankfully , its changing now. So be proud and happy with what you have.😄
You would be loved in Asia if you have pale skin
I remember being a teenager in the 1980s and laying out in the sun with baby oil on, baking for hours. Wish I could take that back.
Same. What the heck were we thinking?!😳
Me to, we added iodine to the baby oil.
Back then the "experts" told us it was good for us. As it turns out, 15 to 20 minutes is sufficient for vitamin D but longer can cause serious problems down the road. But none of us knew that back then.
Following generations will hopefully benefit from all us boomer guinea pigs ... 😉

I wish I could take back the ten years of tanning I did when I was younger. Still trying to reverse the damage I did.
this is so true in the UK. the minute the sun comes out everyone runs outside with no spf and tans for hours on end

So true, I wish I knew then what I know now - SPF 50 instead of Ban de Soleil SPF 4!

I put sunscreen on my child every time and my husband thinks I’m crazy
I started tanning as a child. Because my parents didnt reinforce spf, they made us do heavy farm work in the sun. I burned alot up and my family made fun of me because I was pale while the rest of the family was tan. I never could get color until I was an adult, I tanned because of insecurity and it helped my depression. I'm only 28 and ugh my aging. So kids......put in some god damn spf!

🤣🤣 yeah & that picture she showed scared me! 😬
Gotta get those blackout curtains ^^
gonna also start wearing masks while at home lol

Excellent video. When I was a teenager and in my 20’s I was mocked for being “too pale” but now that I look 15 years younger than my actual age I’m laughing.
(Thankfully I never participated in them.)
Seeing Dr.Dray debunk all these fads made me feel so reassured and I'm so confident that my skin will age beautifully, I don't care if my family tells me I'm overreacting as I lather my entire body with sunscreen cuz I know I'm taking care of myself.
Your a beautiful person !
i wish dr drays channel existed when i was a teen, i struggled with so many skin problems then, dr dray helped me learn a lot.
Exactly!
Supplements my friend
Oh no wonder I've been getting depressed.
Yes, but only from 6-9 AM, other times sun only gets harsh and has a high amount of UVA and UVB ray.
Totally true. I'm Type III and can relate to the narrative you mentioned.
Sometimes people need to see what this kind of cancer does to people :(
Great info. Everyone who cares about their skin should watch this channel!
You perfectly described me in my 20's. And surprise surprise, I did get skin cancer at 37. SPF 100 daily and out of the sun during peak hours.
I think it’s more meant to the people that actually go out just for the reason of tanning and using a product you think will protect you.

THANK YOU! Its actually scary how normal it is to burn your skin away.
Everyone should watch this video! This is so true. I wish I knew all of this earlier in my life!!!
"being inside for a prolonged time" don't worry... I haven't exited my house in almost 8 months 😂
Viola Ristori I haven't even opened my heavy curtains during all of this! I'm becoming some kind of night creature!
Lol I thought I was the only one.
@Snake Eyes X well, in order not have vit D deficiency you could expose your legs to the sun for about 20 min every day, it's safe and should do the job :)
@@aiquesono You're better off getting supplements instead of intentionally exposing your legs to sunlight
Hahaha, thanks for the warning 😂
Thanks for always being an evidence based, logical, and trustworthy source for skincare and dermatology advice. It's made a huge difference to me and I'm so grateful to you for what you do.
I’m pale, freckled and hair red hair color. I do not tan and learned to love the peaches and cream look.
So happy that I’m black & don’t have to worry about having a tan for the summer 😬
Lucky! Got that SPF though?
I have a very deep complexion and I still wear sunscreen on my face and body.
Totally! I've been teased for years for not tanning in the summer, but I literally cannot tan. I just get excruciating, blistering burns.
I hate tanning. I look too dark
I hate tan ..i love my porcelain skin
We love the sunscreen queen😘🙌🙌
"One potential positive of sunburn is that it gets people to come inside" LOL LOOOOOOOVE IT
Your channel has grown so much !!! Congrats!
I know about one study in Iran saying that sun exposure doesn't provoke skin cancer but so can do lack of it
I lived in Florida and don't tan. My friends can't believe I don't lay out by the pool every day. I'm 67 and am not about to look any older than I already do. Thank you for educating people on this.
She's so brave displaying all these products 😂 I love her!
I wish I had this information when I was younger.. I haven't tanned in 8 or 9 years now but used to be an avid tanner completely oblivious to the damage and I really wish I had been presented with the knowledge and warnings that I know now.
Thank you for this video! I have taken MUCH better care of my skin since I found your channel.
Thank You Sooo Much Sweet Friend!! Happy Wednesday!! Have a Beautiful Day!! Please You and Yours Stay Safe and Well!! Always!! xoxoxo

Jackie Marsh hi Jackie thanks so much hope you had a great day sweet friend stay safe 🥰🥰
Can you do a breakdown of all EltaMD’s sunscreens? They have a video posted talking about the different products, but the differences between some aren’t very clear!
YESSSSSS PLEASE
I used the tinted sunscreen and it dried my skin out and irritated my skin
Heidi E they have a few different tinted sunscreens. Which one did you use? I’ve used UV Clear and UV Physical so far and liked both
@@christianeelizabeth5602 which one is more lightweight, clear or physical?
Azzahra Farah Halvita Clear is aesthetically more lightweight, but I find it more hydrating than physical. Which is interesting because to my understanding, physical is supposed to be the more hydrating!
When I was in high school, my spanish class took a trip to Costa Rica. On our beach day, a girl covered herself in a tanning oil and laid out in the sun. She ended up turning so red she almost looked purple and flying home covered in blisters.
That sounds like a near death experience
I have massive respect for you, Dr. Dray!
