  • There are five factors that affect the distance you can produce with a given golf club. Some are skills. Some are strengths. Two others can be purchased from your pro shop / golf store.

Hi! I have a question about Swing Planes. Manuel states that we should not make a conscious effort because the length of the club, in respect to the body and the ball, will naturally make a swing plane. I struggle with this because I find that if I just try to bring my driver over my shoulder (what Manuel teaches), I make the swing plane too upright/steep--causing problems with the ball flight. So, I force myself to make a flatter swing with my driver (or my long irons) over my back and not my shoulder, in order to have proper ball flight. May you please provide some insight about swing planes? Should all clubs go over the shoulder, regardless of club length? Thanks!

If you place your left hand on your right shoulder you will feel a small pointed bone on the outward rear corner of your shoulder. It's called the acromion. Anatomically, when we make a two-hand, side-arm toss of a ball, you will find that your joints position your hands over that bone in the back swing. Try this with a soccer ball/basketball. It doesn't matter what you swing tennis racket, baseball bat, or golf club. While not precisely, you can conceive of the plane as being perpendicular to your spine. On shorter clubs you are leaning more forward so the plane is more vertical but over the acromion.

@@EdLeBeauCFIinstructor You're the best! This makes a lot of sense. Thank you so much.

@@MichaelR1027 Using a tee is a great way to confirm the swing stays on plane. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/GV3Ao6a1_kM/w-d-xo.html

Is there a rule of thumb for trajectory? I don’t know what’s too high or too low. I’ve heard hit it about 35 ft high but I don’t know what’s 35 ft looks like

The optimal trajectory is a function of your ball speed. A professional baseball pitcher can throw the ball to home plate with great speed. In order for you to throw it the same distance you would have to throw it on a higher trajectory (assuming your are not a professional baseball pitcher).
A launch monitor is the definitive way to assess your trajectory. Most golf stores and pro shops have them. Hit several ball with your club and determine a typical launch and distance. Then choose a club with a very different weight or launch. Hit several balls and compare the distance.
