old video but I love how everyone is bashing the man. this what we call mobile painter. most used cars that gets traded into a dealer get this value line touch up. there's nothing wrong with this kind of repair. next time on a nice sunny day drive around back of your local dealerships.

There's not any over spray i promise I've been doing this job for more than 10 yrs and have enough experience already to know that is easy to recognize when is a good job well done.

I took my Jag XF to a body shop to get the whole front end resprayed because of stone chips, and have all 4 alloys refurbished. The overspray was a nightmare, and it took me a whole day of claying, polishing, and waxing to get it back to how I wanted it. Next time I'll happily pay extra if it means they'll thoroughly mask off the other panels. Lazy!!

i think he did a good job , maybe he didnt care how far he when with his color bcause he had good color match, the he clear looked to me like he didnt want the compressor to die on him the only problem i saw was that he going to have over spray all over the the car im an experience painter other than all he need is to sand buff the the door

I spent 5 years working in body shops and then tried doing “ smart repairs “ and found spraying metal panels hit and miss ! Spraying plastic bumpers nearly always got a nice result ! Dark blue metallics always match easily ! Try spraying light metallic blue / gold or silver panel to panel and see the color match !

This is a mobile repair. Of course, it's quick but it won't look as good as professionally done in a shop. Anyone can purchase the franchise of smart repair. Do a 2 week course on 'scratch' repair and you're good to go. If you don't care about being done properly and want it done cheaply, go to these guys. If you want to pay extra $50-$100 or even $200 more, go to a shop and get a crash repairer to do it professionally.

I do smart repairs and would never consider anything bigger than a4 size and never in the middle of the door. Smart repairs are for repairs such as door handles, wing mirrors, corner of bumpers, small trims and so on. This job should of been taken to a body shop and had the other panels painted so the colour would be blended into the existing colour and panels. When the sun shines on this door it will show up two different colours.

A4 paper lol. People who say this went on a week smart repair course lol. I'm a smart repairer for jaguar land rover. Half a car is classed as a smart repair in our world. The owner of the bmw probably wanted a quick cheap repair, and that is exactly what he got. Why pay a ££££££ to blow the whole side of the car in. That involves removing handles etc.

+roy bray Roy most who commented on here work in actual body shops, I fortunately do to. Even I looked and thought.... Blimey that's s a good colour match considering your practically spraying edge to edge. I use cromax (DuPont) for clear coat, so yes a good top quality top coat is a must. Glad to read it still looks good, well done.

Small medium area repair... my work is quality all body shop blokes say the same shit because they can't blend paint and they are shit scares of blending clear coat..... they just get paint ordered in because they can't be arsed mixing it themselves or they don't know how to value shade

I am in the same trade, may I ask what size air compressor you are using and what is a sufficient portable one I can use? I was looking at a pancake porter cable compressor here in the states.
Also to the haters, he did a wonderful job, this is what mobile is. Reality is, most of the jobs I've seen at volkswagen, bmw, honda dealerships, the body shops did horriblly, there are burn throughs with their rotary buffers they dont properly know how to use, lots of hazing, orange peele. You're jealous we mobile guys make way more money than you.

He didn't scuff up the molding area (not good) with red scuff pad and scuff paste. He could of sprayed the primer through piece of cardboard with proper sized hole in it to reduce primed area. When you sand primer, you sand edges down first in circular motion and then finish off with back and forth motion to prevent from having to primer again. Primed area should be finished with 600. Areas to be cleared with 1500, though 1200 will work too.....I think he did ok, over all.

If I were doing this car and it was for a customer, firstly I would have a lot more of the car covered as being outside the wind would blow the primer and paint everywhere, secondly I would be spending a lot longer peeping, unless this video is cut the result would be useless, thirdly I would be priming tight on the damage and painting a slightly wider area and then laquering there rest of the door why paint more than needed?. In my opinion this is not a very professional effort

But this cars probably metallic there was no drop coat you over laps are all over the place and your painting edge to edge so the colour will not match. the whole point of smart repair is to keep the repair small. There was a nice swage line you could of soft edged on.

Looks good but man the amount of work to get all the overspray off the paint is big ✌️

@@ScratchrepairsouthlondonCoUk it’s common sense that overspray will go all over the car , especially on a windy day in British weather also you don’t paint base coat to the end of the panel otherwise it’s impossible to match , the sun reveals all

That lacquer will never look good, locking in solvents like that causing loads of problems later.

Ok, so first of all there is no car cover on the car on a windy day... and he is priming !!!,with a gun that sounds like it has got far too much air pressure coming out of it, probably has atomized primer all over the car, now if you are a painter you will know primer
is really difficult to remove.... Poor bmw, next is the fact that he sanded down between coats... With 1200 grit paper... Fool! All he has done is trapped solvent underneath another coat of primer... He is painting a dark car so going edge to edge is reasonable if you have matched the paint to the car properly... The thing that really worried me is that he flattened out the scratch but he didn't flat the panel or even scotch the door.... So application of paint was awful his gun is a high volume low pressure gun and yet again he has the air pressure whacked right up.. all he is doing is atomizing the paint into oblivion!
Application of water based solid or metallic firstly is a contamination coat or otherwise known is a dust coat or grip coat, you would tac rag between coats. second coat should not be put on too heavily either as this can lead to a build up of paint that will take longer to dry and even if dried properly before application of lacquer can be brittle and even crack... No more that 3 coats should be applied unless you are doing a three stage pearl or blending the colour.
Bringing us to our final act of the repair...lacquer, again our friendly smart repair guy may as well have not even bothered to put the paper up, he has covered the car in over spray. I personally do lacquer up with one coat as I use a Spie-hecker 480 paint system that is designed to be done this way because the base coat is sealed first-time contamination free but this looks like a standard 2k lacquer probably loaded up to the eyeballs with rocket. Probably has got solvent pop, silicone, dust nibs, fingerprints and my personal favourite- paint migration!
Wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't flattened or polished.. a poor display from an inexperienced painter...

Good video ,shows the basics of bodywork repair, obviously better masking, and better shelter required; don't pay any attention to those critics, they probably don't even work in the repair business.
