At any rate, many state names are derived from the names the indigenous people who lived in those locations back when gave them. Thank you for my first Chinese lesson! My college roommate was/is Chinese, and his parents only spoke Cantonese, actually a Cantonese dialect. We lived on "bock toy" at dinnertime, and was shocked years later when it went mainstream that it is "bock choy". Then there was poor Bob struggling with the tonals of Mandarin, which I might say he never mastered. Sill, over the years I could never find any sounds in the M's speech to grab onto for any similarities to English. Later in life, when hearing only Mandarin spoken on TV or airports, I could grasp how different Mandarin actually does sound from Cantonese, even if I can't understand a word. And here you are, giving Native American derived State names in both "dialects". A major stepping stone! And I see you don't have the English "V" sound, it becomes an "F". This is going to be fun! They're two different characters that have the same pronunciation (homophones). 州 zhōu / zau1 - refers to a province or state. 洲 zhōu / zau1 - refers to a continent.

I've read up about it somewhere and the characters for America originally comes from Japanese approximate kanji pronounciation of 'Murica'. The rest of east-asia follows suit with the Japanese but all shortened the name for America to 美國
Partially because there is a large Mandarin speaking community in NJ, not in New Mexico or New Hampshire. Most Mandarin speakers prefer names of places in two characters, and New York itself serves the purpose while NJ does not. Also be aware that "Xinzhou" is mostly used by Mandarin speakers from China, while Mandarin speakers from Taiwan apply "Niu ze xi" (basically the transliteration of NJ) as the common translation.
