So today we’re going to go undercover and see what Chinese people REALLY think about these tattoo fails, although because it’s winter I have a hoodie instead, it says “laowai” 老外 which means “foreigner”, which is a slangy way Chinese people often refer to non-Asian people. Discovered this channel very recently while learning japanese, and honestly this type of stuff is a big reason id like to learn new languages now. It just seems so positive and fun to be able to interact with people in this way. I live in Canada and contrary to popular belief, we are no where near as nice as people we see in video like this. Makes me really excited to one day be able to have an actual conversation in japanese, or even the other languages id eventually like to try learning (punjabi, mandarin, and norwegian).

When I was younger, we'd go to Japanese restaurants, and he would speak to the staff. He was Scandinavian and had a crew cut so they never suspected that he knew how to speak their language.

      @@johnny1max113 If you don’t use it, you lose it. I have a minor in Spanish but very few people in my area speak it and would want to practice with me. I also don’t have a great opportunity to use it in my job at the moment. I haven’t chosen to “quit” Spanish. I’ve had to put other things at a higher priority. Learning a language is a lifelong commitment that takes continual practice. It’s like a muscle - without consistent use, it will atrophy.

    • @vorpal22
      @vorpal22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@johnny1max113 It doesn't have to make sense to you, but here's the explanation: I was living in Canada, and then moved to Chile, where there are almost no Chinese language speakers, materials, or availability. As I didn't speak Spanish, the priority became learning Spanish instead of continuing on in Mandarin at the time: I had nobody to practice with. I also don't really like Mandarin (largely Taiwanese, as that's what I insisted on studying) entertainment, so I felt little inclination to get that listening component in by watching it.
      Furthermore, my job is very demanding, and requires a lot of study constantly as is. I also have a severe and chronic autoimmune disorder that really leaves me drained and sometimes unable to function for months at a time.
      Combine all those things, and I had higher priorities to fill the time I did have, fewer opportunities to maintain my skills, and a lack of energy due to severe and medication-resistant Crohn's Disease.
      Now I have moved to a community with many east Asians and my disease is currently in remission, so I am picking back up my Mandarin (which is going very well), learning Japanese, and studying Classical Chinese for fun.
      Really, I have no desire to learn Spanish and only got by with the basic minimums for communication, but it was a difficult time.
      You'd be surprised how fast it comes back. I've only been going a few weeks and I'm probably back up to 1500 characters.
      Also, I spend a great deal of time studying things not out of practicality, but because I have interests and enjoy challenging my mind. I also study, for example, many programming languages that I am vanishingly unlikely to use, because the experience of studying something quite different from what you are familiar with is one that broadens the mind and keeps it sharp: the process and not the end result is what is sometimes important.
      At least Japanese will be very useful for me to know since I like a lot of Japanese entertainment, and knowing Chinese characters is a huge help to learning Japanese.

      Schools here in England (used to?) teach French and German, and I'm pretty sure American schools have Spanish classes. Most countries also teach English as a second language if it's not their native tongue. So there is opportunity for most people to be bilingual.

    • @soccerchick1

      @@mydogeatspuke I’m Canadian and schools here “teach” French until grade 9 and if you have the space in your classes and the want you can take it throughout the rest of highschool until grade 12 but honestly it’s crap. I took it all the way through school and It’s not usable in actual conversation. It’s all grammar and structure/writing and just unrealistic lessons. We have a full French province here, Quebec, and they make fun of the rest of the country because after taking years and years of French we can’t even communicate with them lmao it’s a mess and waste of time. I have many québécois friends from attending college on the border of the province and I’ve learned more from them. The only thing I remember are a few songs, how to introduce myself, ask a few simple questions and say goodbye from the actual classes. You are not bilingual after them. I’ve talked to many people from the states because I was so close to the border aswell and there was a military base right there and it’s about the same thing with Spanish classes depending on where you live in the USA. More money, time and effort needs to be invested in second language classes. It’s such a skill and needs to be stressed here. I’m beyond jealous of other places lol.

      Nope. That's the problem. People are not the same and we should simply accept that. Stop pushing unity and accept diversity. It's so silly to see humans as the same because that's the cause of so many problems. Who decides what normal is if we are all the same? Because most people think they set the standard for normal and ultimately decides others are different when we should or basically are the same. I agree that it's a nice video though. But we should move on from that stuff. We already know what we SHOULD do and act, we already know what is wrong. We just need to focus on the good parts instead of distracting us with bs. Comfortable is not good. You watching a movie with popcorn isn't good while bad stuff happens in your country. People are just distracted, because it's more comfortable. Who told you I'm like you? A movie? A song? A politician? Your mom? Because I am NOT you, and I still want to be accepted.
