  • The UK’s shortest-serving PM, who is still entitled to claim up to £115,000-a-year for the rest of her life, spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, USA.
Liz Truss said: "Conservatives are now operating in what is now a hostile environment and we essentially need a bigger bazooka."
James O’Brien and callers react to this, discussing whether Truss is too dangerous to ignore.
07:29- Caller Phil thinks her behaviour is ‘disgusting and grotesque’
08:30 - Caller Rob believes ‘Margaret Thatcher’ was ‘more intelligent’ than Liz Truss

Her telling the United States that her premiership was ended by trans activists just shows how little regard is given to the truth these days in the pursuit of power.

When Liz Truss became PM she was like a little girl who had just been given a pony by her rich parents, she couldn't believe her luck that she was awarded such a thing.
Problem is, a month later, the pony is dead and Liz's parents are asking her ''You were giving your pony food and water weren't you?'' and Liz just looks at them blankly and says, ''I thought the boy next door, Kwasi, was doing that?''

She says “the right policies” when she tried a large unfunded tax cut in the midst of a bout of high inflation and an over-leveraged government finance position. Her policies weren’t shut down by politics, they were crushed by apolitical international investors who saw irresponsible dangerous policy and had to protect their capital. It’s absurd.

I have not read your book James, but I have read Plato's middle dialog, better known as 'The Republic'. In it Plato outlines five regimes of government, and the order in which he considers they will occur. To be brief, the 4th form of government, following the decay of the first three, is Democracy - The rule of the many. In Plato's view this will only last as long as it takes for a small group, probably led by a single powerful figure, to be elected, and then change the rules to create the 5th form of government, Tyranny - The rule of ONE: Dictator for a day? Have we arrive at a Platonic tipping point?
Some might suggest that such a transformational strategy has already been trialled in 1933. That change of government in Germany led onto creeping military incursions into other counties, something we are witnessing today. History cannot repeat itself, in virtue of being in the past, but the same flawed human psychology can lead to very similar ends.

There will always be grifters in every society. It is not the role of civil society to sit and bemoan the moral fibre of these grifters, it is the role of civil society to put in place structures, rules and standards that prevent these grifters from gaining power.
