  • “That is the huge dagger at the heart of the Conservative Party's election chances.”
A “terrific defeat” for the Conservatives “must be in the interests of Liz Truss” and her wing of the party, who continue to make the case for the 'Truss agenda'.

Where's his evidence that the Tories are economically competent and 'prudent' with the nation's finances? Every time they get into power, the country's infrastructure and vital services fall to bits. Or are infrastructure and vital services not part of the economy?

    • @backgammonbacon

He just said that's what people think not that its true. And people do think that despite all the evidence to the contrary. I don't think people actually know the stats behind the economy they just got this idea that the Conservatives are good from somewhere and it wont shift.

I think it's more about a perception of reigning in "expenses". It's why the Blair government could go on a spending spree after Major. Obviously expenses mean different things to different people and as you cut ever deeper into ever aging infrastructure investment while international competition around you grows it becomes more of a dangerous tactic, Camerons austerity programme was particularly disastrous, evident by the stagnation in productivity in the UK since. I don't think Sunak is much different to Truss, re crippling HS2 and reducing investment in green industries, two areas that could actually improve productivity in the UK, specifically in the North, the Tories now are more like a one trick pony over reliant on the unicorn of the spontaneous entrepreneur that is meant to mythically appear from tax cuts where in reality tax cuts just increases our existing poor trade deficit and continues the cycle of the south east heavily to give hand outs to the rest of the country.

It's still early days and believing polls is a 'fool's paradise'. Firstly, many Tory voters have a long tradition of deserting the party mid-term to apply pressure on policy. So, there will be many right-wing people not voting in local or by-elections and telling lies to pollsters. These people always vote in general elections and never want Labour. Then there's the matter of Reform leeching crucial votes from Tory candidates. In theory, this appears great for Labour - in practice Reform takes votes from Labour too (May discovered this in 2017 when she wrongly assumed post referendum all 2015 UKIP votes would go Tory). Also it's looking probable the Tory Party will shift to the right and make an election pact with Reform to leave the ECHR and stop the boats. This would mean Reform and Tories not contesting the same seat and making the general election all about 'the boats'. As Harold Wilson famously once said: _"A week is a long time in politics."_

'Claiming "All Libertarians want a police state" is insane,"
Well maybe not all, but most of them. If you read the small print on libertarianism it only ever means liberty for rich white people and everyone else should know their place and take orders from their superiors.
If you want to know a person's real motives you should never listen to what they say but watch what they do when faced with difficult choices. So what did the self-styled 'libertarians' of the Tory party do when faced with public sector workers demanding more liberty in the form of living wages? They passed laws restricting their liberty to go on strike. That shows their real motives.
All the liberties people have wrung from powerful people at the top have come through left wing agitation, not right wing 'libertarians'.
You'll never see a self-styled 'libertarian' on the picket lines with workers striking for more liberty in their lives.
You'll never see a self-styled 'libertarian' on the Channel beaches welcoming destitute refugees from authoritarian regimes seeking liberty on our shores.
That's because self-styled 'libertarians' do not care for liberty for the masses, it's only ever liberty for the very rich, and a police state for everyone else.
Putin is the finest example of 'libertarian' around. He has the liberty to do whatever he wants and every one else in Russia lives in a police state.

There hasn't been a libertarian state, where the majority of people have happilly participated, or had their living standards increase. In the best possible outcome, you get a one off burst of meritocracy, where the winners and their decendants become lords, and the decendants of the losers, stay poor serfs, irregardless of merit.

She really does come across as unhinged. And has the personality of a lettuce. Whatever you thought about Mrs Thatcher she had charisma and was clearly very intelligent. Liz Truss has gone from a Cameroon Tory supporting Remain to hanging around with Steve Bannon talking about the "deep state". I cannot imagine what her family think. It's quite a difference.

Peter Mandelson strikes me as the personification of everything that is wrong in the Labour Party today: a focus on politics rather than people. I'd go so far as to suggest that he sees people as a block to politician's lofty ambitions. Thank you Matt for answering Mandy's 'rhetorical' question about Corbyn's response to the Iran/Israel conflict as wanting "peace"- best part of the podcast!

I do agree with you, now I'm not a Tory, but think of how awful she is from their perspective, they have the local elections coming next month, many councillors up and down the country, who themselves might be working hard locally are having to compete with Liz Truss for space in the minds of the voters! It just goes to show how truly dreadful she is, not just as a PM but as a human being and proves that she totally lacks any level of self-awareness.

What did May, Johnsone, Truss or Sunak achieve for the same group?

My Geordie friend, Michael, who works in a BP garage, fancies getting into marketing for a publishing company so I set him the challenge of trying to sell the new Liz Truss book to me, with me playing the role of a sceptical potential buyer. "Would you like this booook?" he said, (Yes, I know it's often hard to understand the Geordie people).
    "Who’s it by?" I responded.
Michael said: "It's by this woman what used to be Prime Minister, but, she wasn't very good, so now she’s not. She went right doon right, and hit rock bottom man, and now she’s on her way back up right, but I mean she’ll never get back to where she was, cos them days is over like, but she’s coming back a bit."
At this point I had to inform Michael that I wouldn't want to read a book like that, because it sounded depressing. I added that his sales technique was awful. And that he was low on Bodyline Brushable Joint Sealer.

The other reason the Labour vote went up in 2017 was May's inability to campaign and the social care and inheritance policies that would have allowed rich people no tax on £2m inheritances but would have charged poor people more steeply from inheritances for aged people's social care.
