You get all cards,infinite ichikaro meter...ichikaro is japanese for one-hit knockout and a feature that allows you to instantly KO everyone else with the push of a single button. SEGA was really weird when it came to making games on an Nintendo system.
Also: Sonic's Axe Kick aim attack could have been his Meteor Smash in Smash Brothers but he was rushed so they gave him Pikachu's forward A attack but with no electric shock affect.

Yeah, his ground specials don’t count as specials actually. If the enemy is auto blocking shot, the special will still kill them.
It can still be blocked manually though.

Additionally some of Emerls ultimate standard attacks do violate Rogues rules. I suspect that the rule only checks for certain attack effects instead of if the player used an attack mapped to a special button.
I happened to come across this ages ago and kept malding when the battle kept ending midway through a basic combo which had an ultimate jab in it and couldnt figure out why for weeks lmao.

Cream is actually the most powerful character in the game outside of customized Emerl; she has an infinite as you found, you can juggle people with the tornado special, she has a double jump, she heals extremely quickly, and her aerial B move comes out SO fast, incredibly easy to spam
Her heal is fucking bonkers, it gives her so much health AND meter, running away and abusing it is a viable strategy

I love how in her story, she refuses to fight for the first half of it. Then Gamma starts beating up Emerl and says "What can a little bunny do to stop me?" And then you play as her and find out she's OP.
When I played through the game when I was 5 I didn't even know how to install the upgrades on Emerl so I kinda did the challenge from my own stupidity.

Never realized to hit like left or right on the customization screen to switch menus, so, think the only thing I could change were Emerl's special attacks.

the special that you don't chose is used up as a defense option. that means you automatically block whenever you are hit with the corresponding special. for instance getting hit by an shot special with shot as defense will block that move regardless if you press l or not which is why at 16:21 gamma blocks emeral's special in mid air.
Also: He later mentions the enemy never blocking some special moves of Emerl's, and I believe it's because they don't have those special types.
The Jazz Hands doesn't produce a trap, so it's not blocked by Set type block.
@@calemr Yeah that makes sense. Not sure if its an oversight or intentional. Either way it did make the run a lot easier. That would also explain why it didn't fail him for the Rouge mission where he needed to ko her 10 times without a special move.
That makes so much sense. I’ve just been mashing A when the special move menu pops up so I’ve been wondering why walking up to the other characters’ land mines automatically blocked it.
Also yeah, I think the game only counts the landmines and shock waves parts of the special moves as the special move. Which is why Emerl’s grounded SET can’t be blocked, and why using the grounded SHOT was viable in Rouge’s ‘don’t use special moves’ battle.

I’ve never actually played Sonic Battle but seeing the sprites in this video made me remember some fan made sonic browser games YEARS ago that I used to play quite often. Ahh nostalgia
The GBA sonic sprites are fantastic.
So, the thing about Emerl's base special attacks. Most of them don't actually have the internal "special move" tag applied to them.
They do regular damage with no special properties.
That is why the ground trap and the air shot will completely bypass the auto guard function of the npcs, as well as not trip Rouge's "no special attack" rule.
If you use an actual special move ability, she does stop that fight.
Now the actual reason for this is interesting. Consider Sonic's special moves. His shot and trap attacks launch projectiles, which deliver the related properties of their special attack types.
If you use Sonic's shot attack like you would use emerl's, its ball form ALSO ignores autoguard.
My guess is that they specifically coded it so that Sonic's spinball will always hurt an opponent who isn't ACTIVELY guarding, and Emerl just got the gift of handmedown.
It’s even weirder than that. If you unlock the unique “OHKO” moves for Emerl’s specials, they’re not always “special” attacks either. Sonic’s OHKO starts with a string mimicking Sonic’s B-combo, and it ends with his grounded SHOT. The only part of this multi-move string that actually counts as a special move is the projectile from that very last hit, so everything before that ignores the opponent’s guard choice entirely.
i accidentally did (most of) this as a kid, because i didn't know how to customize emerl, so i was stuck with his crap start moves. you have no idea how unfair i thought it was when he was the final boss and was way stronger than when i used him

I've been playing Dark Souls and Sonic Battle for over a decade each.
And I only just noticed Club Rouge's central bumper looks like Solaire's shield.
The reason why sometimes enemies block specials in the air is because when you're choosing your special, the one that isn't chosen becomes an auto block for that special. So if you didn't choose POW, then you will auto block every POW special no matter what. What's interesting, though, is how you can fool the system. Namely with Emerl's and Sonic's ground shot. Because it's a rip-off of Sonic's, it runs on the same mechanics, and it just so happens that what the auto guard blocks is everything after the energy wave from the shot is generated. It doesn't consider anything else as part of the special attack. Which means that when Emerl and Sonic use their ground shot and attacks an enemy the first couple frames of the attack where they get in a spin ball and is about to release an energy wave (that doesn't exist in Emerl's case) doesn't get auto blocked. But because it's still part of the special attack animation, while the auto guard ignores it, the one hit K.O special bar doesn't. It sees it as part of the attack and thus kills the enemy in one hit even though the auto block should protect them.
I'm pretty sure rouge doesn't lie about special moves(I remember her stopping battle in regular playthrough), maybe devs took pity and don't consider default emerl specials as specials?
Maybe it was a mistranslation, version specific or alternatively only custom specials are counted.
Emerl's specials don't get counted as specials due to lacking certain components. On the other hand I think some ULT non-specials can cause you to fail the fight due to having special components.
I actually kind of did this as a kid, unintentionally. I knew I could customize Emerl but I didn't know you could tab over to edit his attacks, so all I did was edit his first tab (movement, jump, guard, etc.) and thought that was just how the game was. I ended up figuring out that Emerl's default ground shot attack can actually KO an opponent in 4 hits and it never counted as a special move. This was how I beat the whole game, with just that one ground shot attack over and over. XD

20:10 They don't block Emerl's set move because they need an explosion to block it. Same reason why Sonic's (and by extension Emerl's) first hit of their shot attack can hit the opponents but they block the second one.
Also, you had to look up Emerl's (and by extension Sonic) infinite crit attack exploit, where you use their air shot and just before sending the wave you hit the ground. Like that, you insta kill the opponent and keep the crit meter. Would have made the battles go much easier and with much less planning and strategy making, all down to execution. (Strategy taken from a Speedrun)

Yeah Base Emerl's specials _Literally Do Not Count As Specials_ except for the ohko charge mechanic. I thought base Ground Set was flat-out Broken when I was younger. If you used a proper special from an actual character in the 10ko Rouge fight, it'd end as properly implied.

The reason some specials are blocked midair is because opponents chose that category as their 3rd (ie block special). Killing a COM with a special will have 'em switch to it as their defensive to block you. HOWEVER Emerl has at least 1 nerfed special (maybe 2 iirc) that don't even trigger the autoblock!!

The thing about blocking specials is that whenever you equip your specials, you choose 1 to be immune to. That's why some cpus blocked your specials in the air.
22:27 the heartattack would be if you had any special that did an explosion/projectile it only stops you from those attacks. Funny enough if you use rouge special kick I think it wont count which is an oof.
I did this when I was a child because I didn't understand how to update Our robot boy 😂. I used mostly all of these strategies back in the day, thank you for reminding me of this part of my childhood
This game was my favourite when i was younger. Quite unique and fun game, wish they made a sequel or remaster it in newer consoles

i partly blame sega for not porting it to modern hardware and platforms just like with a vast majority of other sonic games.

@@Pk_Hisui gameplay is fun and simple imo. most fighting games have lots of complicated button combos. only flaw with this games gameplay is that its too easy to spam special moves with R button, and the storymode has too much grinding and padding.
@@Kiezly For me at least it feels a bit too simple. Sonic the fighters feels like it reaches a better balance. I get that the complexity of most fighting games can scare some people away but there still needs to be enough of it so that there's room for player growth and expression. There's a reason why sonic the fighters managed to build a competitive community while battle remains mostly ignored

I loved Sonic Battle back when I played it as a kid, but I remembered it being way harder than you made it look, even with your challenge in mind. Maybe I just didn't have a solid grasp of its mechanics, or the mind to take advantage of the more overpowered moves. There's a lot of trivia I remember about this game, but surprisingly most of it wouldn't have helped with this run, especially with the rule of not using special moves with the other characters. For example I think there's a mechanic where your opponent will be set to block the last special you hit them with when they respawn, but other comments have already pointed out that Emerl's stubby specials barely count as specials and would ignore that rule.

So, the thing about Emerl's base specials is that they're incomplete versions of Sonic's Specials, everyone knows that.
The reason you were probably able to get away with using them so much is because Sonic's Shot and Grounded Set Specials have two components: The drop, and the actual projectile/bomb. Even on Sonic, the drop component (Where he's revved up or flicking his wrist to drop the bomb) has an active hitbox which functions bizarrely. They're simultaneously considered as both Normals and Specials, because the game will treat them as normals for 99% of instances, but they can still become Oneshots with the Super Meter. Since Emerl's copies don't have the actual projectile/explosive, they exploit the system just by being incomplete. The only other moves in the game that have this kind of property are most hits of Emerl's unique Combo Specials (The ones where he'll use one character's jab combos in a turbo loop before ending on one of their finishers/specials)

Also if you get launched by another character but hold the d-pad in the opposite direction, if you hit a wall you will also charge it that way as well.

I unintentionally did this challenge back when I was a kid, sort of. I didn't know you could swap pages in the move menu for years, so I only changed movement and defensive options, lol
Edit: Through my experience of doing this, I can tell you that Emerl's shot and bomb moves are actually pretty busted. Sure, they don't really...shoot, anything, but the resulting spike ball or jazz hands smack cannot be blocked by an opponent, even if they select shot or bomb as their block special. Which means, you can farm instant kills on those all you like by healing during downtime, since healing raises the charge bar even if you're not restoring health with it. I believe the only line of specials that the opponent can block automatically on Emerl are his power specials. I have fond memories of using electric jazz hands on my enemies back in the day, lol
Edit edit: It's why you were able to use those moves in Rouge's "don't use special moves" challenge, because the game apparently doesn't consider them to be special moves, despite the fact you can get instant kills with them. Really wierd.
Yeah, the computer rarely blocks. Those moves could be blocked manually, but the computer never will block them.

I actually did this as a kid because I was an idiot. When customizing Emerl, you're supposed to press the R button or whatever to go to the next page of things to customize, which I somehow never found. So I went through the entire game spamming the shitty version of Sonic's shot special. Good times
The balance and jank of this game was more present than i remembered.

Funny thing about this video it reminds me of a very same situation I was in when I first played this game! I got an English copy of it before I learned how to speak English so I was skipping all the dialogue and just playing all the fights without any upgrades just like your challenge video here!!! 😂 it wasn’t until like halfway through the entire game when I accidentally pressed one of the shoulder buttons to activate the skill menu and that’s when I was like what the hell is this? I felt like I discovered a secret. 😂

Yay, someone finally did this challenge!
Before watching: during my childhood i was really bad in English, so i always skipped the part when it says "press R when on the map to change Emerl's skills". So, with that the furthest i could get was the middle of Amy's story, that part when you need to score 5/10 points with 2 opponents before they score the goal. And i somehow did 5 points, but stuck on 10, could not continue (i did not know how to save my progress) and gave up. Years later when i knew English much better i attempted it again and that's when i knew how i messed up in past. Turns out Amy's story was the hardest one and if i could beat it i probably could finish the game back then

The reason gamma could block specials sometimes is determimed when they respawn. When selecting your specials, the third one you pick is actually the one you're immune to. NPCs do this as well, giving a rock paper scissors dynamic to the game.

I ended up doing this to myself completely by accident as a kid. I only had Sonic Battle on emulator, so I had no instruction booklet, and I was a dumb kid so I just never figured out how to actually give Emerl all of these moves I was earning. Every battle with him was a godawful chip damage fest and I was constantly like "why is this character so bad? what is the point here?"
Glad to see I'm not alone in my suffering.
There are some other unexplained mechanic in the game, too, which I only found out for myself after playing for a while. (also favorite game, btw)
For the 3 skills, the 1st you choose is a ground power, the 2nd is aerial, and the 3rd is auto block. Think of this as like a rock-paper-scissors game, so if your current enemy kills you with a ground shot that's nasty, you can choose Pow + Set and choose block for Shot.
Also, some specials have a specific animation that can cause damage, like Sonic's shot, where both the wave and the spinning motion can damage you. This makes Emerl's crappy ground Shot surprisingly strong, and I abuse it to the max whenever I play as Emerl. I don't even need Sonic's wave, I just need to hit enemies with the spin.
Another one that causes damage is also Sonic's bomb placing motion. The bomb itself explodes, like duh, but for Emerl's crappy version, he does not place down bomb, but the hand placing can still cause damage, and you can also abuse that animation to sort of stun lock.
Also, changing style card into E-102 Gamma will let Emerl explode upon kill, dealing damage just like the original E-102.
Can you beat Sonic Battle without Upgrades. Yes....Just prepare for rage when Sonic and Shadow randomly decides not to let you play.
I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention the dash attack at the start. I vaguely recall it being very useful in the final Sonic Vs Ultimate Emerl fight.
this game was absolutely top tier for a gba title. from the fighting mechanics, to the storyline, it never dissapointed. it only got more fun as you played it. I wish they would make a new sonic fighting game with these kinds of mechanics but updated to todays standard of quality.

The reason opponents can sometimes auto-block, both on the ground and in the air, is because you’re trying to use a special move type that they picked as their defense! Before you respawn at any point in a round you pick what type of special you have on the ground, what type you have in the air, and what type you’ll automatically block if someone uses that type against you, and the opponents get to pick theirs as well any time they respawn
I remember playing this game for the first time like 2 years ago. The insane whiplash I got going from playing as Sonic to the slow, clunky, and pathetic upgrade-less Emerel is not something I’ll ever forget
And the satisfaction that you get from upgrading Emerl is so good.

I got sonic battle a little after its release when I was a kid. I was sick and my grandmother kept me home from school- she took me to toys r us after the doctors appt and she bought me it. This game became my legitimate obsession- I played it nonstop all day everyday. I miss this game, I wish they’d do something like this again 😭😭

You're in for a great time. The story is amazing despite flanderising some of the cast and creating your only little buddy is far more charming here than in other games (not just picking on Sonic Forces, but yeah).
The combat is also pretty interesting although the campaign can be a bit grindy.

Gamma's death explosion is considered a Power-type move. If you're set to block Power, you're immune to it.
Fun fact: You missed the Chase Gimmick.
Inmediately After you use the launcher attack, if you double tap the direction in which the opponent flew off, your character will do a high-speed dash right to where the opponent is, and pressing B will make them do a follow-up knock down, that sends the opponent to the ground, and deals a lot of damage
I remember playing this game and giving Emerl a bunch of Chaos’ move sets because I thought it had the coolest animations.

Some notes for anyone that might want to play the game:
The special attack that is not used becomes an defense, so, for example, if you don't use bombs, they won't be able to damage you in case the enemy uses, the blocked attack also fills the special bar
The enemy ALWAYS puts it's defensive option on the special attack that killed it last round (if your last hit was a special, you can still do most damage with specials and then finish off with a normal for a chance for it NOT to happen)
Knuckles is a really infuriating character to use, it is the only character that moves during his jabs, but, his ground power special is a really strong punch, albeit a slow one too
You can get to the ground faster as rouge (or with the air movement for emerl) by pressing jump
In the Emerl chapter, you can find a building that let's you input codes, those include a special sort of attack that is a character' combo, those count as specials, but bypass the guard an enemy could use (except if the finisher is a special)
