I'm a big fan of the straightforward and simple April Fool concepts. I had to do a double take like "Can I beat the game if I used a normal controller" but "Can I bet the game as it was released and probably intended to be played?" is much funnier.
I love playing the game normally ended up becoming a challenge just because of how infamous it is
You know, this as an April Fool’s Day video honestly makes sense. For two reasons:
-To see if there is any difference to enjoy it as is.
-Is it easier or harder to perfect all stages with or without the gimmick.
Were the reviewers joking or was it maybe true.
Not only is it possible, as a kid I was able to S rank all of the missions.

The real April Fool's joke here is that you played through Sonic Free Riders of your own free will. You played yourself AND we got some Mawde Wile content.
Yo! Fool's jokes aside, I wanted to give my thanks for actually showing pretty damn good skill in this game! It always frustrates me to no end when any sort of reviewer complains about the controls being unresponsive, since they're just fine once you get used to the delay.
Especially the turning, though, *nobody seems to want to use their arms while boarding!*
But my ranting aside, splendid video, Mawde, sub obtained.
fr the ending was a really funny way of making fun people who complain about it. i remember 100 percenting the game as a kid, its really not that bad
Maybe the reviewers wouldn’t complain if the controls weren’t murder to get used to, and the worst way to play the game.

you did very well and seeing now Sonic Free Riders has good levels and gimmicks (the one about holding on to the pole and launching yourself in some direction is my favorite) but I think the only problem with the game would be the fact that it depends on the kinect, the The idea is good, but an option to choose between playing on a controller or on Kinect would save the spine of many players, as well as being more comfortable to play
I agree. Not everyone has a big, well lit, open space to move their body around. Having that option might’ve saved the game

Yeah, it is. I honestly never had issues with the Kinect in any game that used it, including Sonic Free Riders. If anything I actually enjoyed using it. I know this was an April Fools upload, but I still feel the need to defend the Kinect when I never struggled to use it the same way everyone else struggles to coexist with it.
I’m kind of in the same boat. The Kinect I used was working perfectly fine. A few hiccups here and there, but nothing compared to all the horror stories on the internet

Alright, you got me for sure. It didn't even occur to me until the end that this was an April Fools video, I was already preparing my comment for how I thought the idea of playing a game the dev intended way was funny enough on its own.
That aside, I never played this one because my 360 red-ringed a long time ago, but I was a fan of the previous Sonic Riders games. I know this one wasn't reviewed well, but there are some nice ideas that I like in some of these races, like sticking your arms out to grab onto objects or find shortcuts. Having both the power skill and motorbike controls overlap does seem like an oversight, but otherwise you made the game look a whole lot more functional than others did when it released.
Honestly, this game is under appreciated. It has great stages with cool gimmicks and environments, graphics still look good today, all the characters take part in the story, and it takes a lot of mechanics from the first Riders game and simplified them only a little bit. Plus it has the most in depth tutorial mode.
The real 4/1 prank was saying equippeded again.

Real title: is it possible to beat the game without hating it???
(This was one of my childhood games and with my too young mind I either just did casual races or only team heroes with my siblings. Eventually we chose to do the rest and I beat the whole game several times).
This was a fun way to learn what actually happens in Free Riders, especially since I've seen the cutscenes waaay more :)
If you lean too far forward or backward, the connect thinks you left the play area.

The whole “swapping between normal and goofy stance swaps your rider ability” thing has me conflicted. On one hand, in general it’s a very “why would you do that” thing given the Kinect controls, because of course everyone would want to keep flipping their actual left and right to swap abilities as needed. On the other hand, it seems like something that would actually be pretty cool if you mastered it and pulled it all off flawlessly in a race, which is very much in the spirit of Sonic.
This game can be fun with a controller, but I wish this game in general had an option to turn off power-ups in the rules settings for racing where it's just pure racing where it feels realistic. Since I feel like the power-ups makes the AI easy, I wonder how tough the AI would be without power-ups? Don't get me wrong, power-ups are fun to use, but I usually like them off. I would love it if it had an option to turn off power-ups instead of using the invisible gear part to act like there's no power-ups.

Me: honestly, the challenge I’d want is more for rom hackers than players: can you make something tolerable or even fun using Bubsy 3D as your base game?

You totally could... but it'd be a lot of work for not much pay off. Bubsy 3D is fundementally broken in most every way. The way Bubsy and the camera work in that game is truly atrocious and not at all accomedated by the level design so the game desperately wishes those were ironed out, but even with good controls the level design is a travesty. At best the level design is completely nonsensical and at worst it's actively punishing the player for daring to engage.
We could of course focus on making new levels that better work with the base controls and camera, but that's a hard sell because as mentioned they're awful and not fun to play with, and provide no real oppertunities for interesting level design, ex: the camera panning directly down when you jump forces every jump to be straight down or badly designed.
So what we end up with is that we'd need totally new controls, camera and new levels to make a game that isn't inherently unfun to play, and even then the theming would be garbage. Bubsy is painfully unfunny in Bubsy 3D, the graphics are... unfinished, and the sound is painful.
It would genuinely be easier and a better use of your time to make a Bubsy fan game from scratch then it would be to fix Bubsy 3D.

Incidentally, Rerez actually introduced a better target game for this sort of challenge/redemption hack thing: Phix the Adventure. Could’ve been a late PS1 curiosity, certainly has more starting value than Bubsy 3D, but it’s more broken than Sonic 06. Notably, while Bubsy 3D is a case of really being better off starting from scratch, Phix is more a case of “this might be worth someone’s time at least if someone went in and fixed…everything.” You’d know what I mean if you saw it.

While the Kinect wasn’t really great I do find it a kind of funny that you have people nowadays obsessing over the idea of using their body/hands instead of a controller yet that’s literally what the Kinect did even though the tracking wasn’t the best at times like yes the Kinect was hated at the time but people hating on it nowadays is like hating on a car from the 2000s because it’s not as good as a car from the 2020s they do the same thing but one’s obviously better
the difference being, of course, that the 2000s car is the better one
Cheaper modern VR setups do actually use the kinect from what ive heard

somehow, this reminded me of an old video i saw on a, ahem, adult website.
the video shows someone using a device, where you stand on top of it, and shift your weight, to perform the equivalent of moving a directional control or joystick.
the funny part is that one of the players is tied up, wearing a "monoglove" style bondage device!

I think I just got lucky with a good setup. I had a big, bright, open space to move around so I’m the Kinect must’ve had an easier time reading my actions compared to other people.
Nothing compared to all the horror stories I heard online
Of course I haven’t touched it in over a decade but when I got this game as an 11 year old I fucking loved it. Of course now that I’m older and graduated with a degree in game design I can see it’s faults but still doesn’t change the fact that I once had fun with it.
Still love this game, had tons of fun with the kinect.

The Kinect has the same problem as the wii where you just need to find the right ones with better sensors, my Kinect wasn't that good apparently.
Well I just couldn't beat it with the Kinect at all. I personally found it impossible despite jumping about the place and swinging everywhere along with turning my body like a mad man.

I wish the Kinnect had been a secondary option for this game or at least got controller support.
Compared to the PS2 version, this version of the game is much prettier to look at.
Note: I've never had the space to use the Kinnect so whether I wanted to ("Gun Stringer") or not ("Kinnect Adventures") I couldn't give it a chance.

When beating a game the way the developers intended is considered a challenge, you get a sense of how horrible the game is.
April fool's joke aside, this video proves that the issues with this game isn't magically "fixed" just because it has a controller patch now. For better or for worse, the game's original vision was designed with the kinect motion controls in mind, which is why everything from the mechanics to the track design is so dumbed down from the previous titles. Long straight-aways with gentle turns and plenty of automation everywhere with mechanics like front/backflipping for extra distance/height after ramps and drifting/slingshotting out of turns removed because the player only has so much agency with motion controls. Ironically, as a result, the only thing that really made it interesting was the kinect itself, lol. Without the kinect, the game is is pretty boring and bland and giving it controller support doesn't really fix that, which is probably why the devs never bothered giving it gamepad support since the most interesting parts about it isn't really its core game design as a "kart" racer, but the kinect gimmicks. Nice vid, Mawde.
