Tendulkar for Longevity and consistency, Lara for his heroic match winning ability. To me Lara still has the best batting action and stroke play of any Batsmen i have seen, by quite a large margin, oh that glorious backlift.

LARA and SACHIN both are my favourite batsman not more not less. LARA is dominating batsman(he can dominate any bowler when he is in flow) SACHIN is classic batsman(he is techniqualy perfect batsman). sachin tendulkar told his favourite player is LARA murali told best batsman faced is LARA WHILE SIR BRADMAN told best batsman is SACHIN TENDULKAR his playing style like me.
I agree Tendulkar was steady and serious but often likely to score a steady century like Geoff Boycott but Lara just had that natural finesse and style which you don't see very often.

Lara was always my favorite batsman, I wouldn't be qualified to say who was the best. Only the top bowlers and captains who faced them can give an answer. Sachin was an unbelievable player who's record will never be beaten in tests in my opinion. Also one of the most humble superstars I've ever listened to, almost self deprecating at times. Cricket was blessed to have these 2 players at the same time. Greatest thing is the respect and friendship the have. Could of been easy for them to have rivalry, especially when everyone else seems to talk about who was/is the best.
Allan Donald talks abt Sachin ,Lara ,Steve waugh in an interview in 2009 , I had been watching Sachin Tendulkar on and off before we (South Africa) were readmitted in 1991. Everything about him is just so exceptional. He is wonderful technically and he has everything - class, speed, all the shots, and he is cool under pressure. Cricketers always talk about his amazing balance, even the Aussies. I've seen tapes of Sunil Gavaskar and if you split the screen between him and Tendulkar, they look virtually identical. I have never seen a man with such immaculate balance - it is freakish. People go to a Test match just to watch Tendulkar. I, for one, would rather watch him than bowl against him. Actually, I'm glad I'll never have to bowl to him in a Test match again, though I've been quite successful against him. He is No. 1 in my book - the best player I have ever had the privilege of bowling to. There's Steve Waugh and there's Brian Lara, who was wonderful in 1995, but Tendulkar is a class above, consistently special. The best knock I can remember him playing was at Newlands in 1997, when he was just unstoppable. We only got him thanks to a blinding catch by Adam Bacher off a hook shot, otherwise he would have gone on and on. Under Hansie Cronje we studied hard for a Tendulkar weakness. We thought he might be vulnerable, especially early in his innings, to the ball that is bowled from wide of the crease, coming back in off a good length. He might then be bowled through the gate, or be lbw, especially on English wickets. We also tried peppering him with short balls - not many top-class batters like that - but it didn't really seem to bother him. The one thing that might rattle him is being restricted. He loves scoring, and scoring quickly, and if he is frustrated, sometimes he goes out and looks for the big shot. I don't think he really gets rattled by sledging. Glenn McGrath tried it and Tendulkar just kept running at him and hitting him back over his head for four. I think that, like Steve Waugh, sledging just makes him more focused: I don't think it is a good idea to have a word. Tendulkar is already a legend so I'm not sure how he'll be remembered - what comes after legend? . He's the best in the world, one of the most magnificent players there's ever been. He's also a nice guy, a soft-hearted bloke who gives 110% and just loves playing cricket.
Strangely Lara had the most test runs in way less innings that Tendulker. And strangely enough Mcgrath and Murali both said that Lara was the best they ever bowled to. So......i guess they should know......right?

No he's not. Both score a century every six innings, and 56 percent of Tendy's scores are below 40, whilst 54 percent of Lara's scores are below 40. Meanwhile, all Lara's big innings are vs good teams and strong bowling attacks, whilst Tendy goes big vs minnows or teams minus their key bowlers.
kshitiz06 For the entire 1990s, Lara averaged better than Tendulkar in ODIs. And, if you look at his whole career, he still averages better in ODIS batting 1,2 or 3. Lara's ODI form dropped because he batted down the order from 2001 onwards, because he has few not outs and because Tendulkar gets to play lots and lots of games in the subcontinent. Still, Tendy is statitically the best ODI player after Viv Richards (Kohli looks like he would catch up). I think if Lara had the ODI opportunities Tendulkar had, he would do better. I think he is simply the better batsman. By the way, I am not a Tendulker hater, he is my favourite Indian batsman after Gavaskar.

@MultiSazam havng scored 7000 more runs than lara in odi..having beeter avg than lara in test odi and better strike than lara in odi u feel sachin is 2nd to him.. then u got problms in ur interpretation.....there is some difference in a player who has 46 odi hundres and the one who go 19..there is some diffrnce in the player who has 49 hundreds quality hundreds in test and the won woh got 34 with 2 useless scores of 350 plus.i hv today compared them in terms of their cricketing record..

His triple plus centuries and highest score records like 501* testify how difficult it is to take him out once he starts getting in his rhythm.
sankar uit I dont forget 51 test centuries, but that was because Tendulkar played many more matches and many in Asia. Lara and Tendulkar actually score test centuries at the same rate - about 6 innings per century - but Lara plays tougher opponents. Stats dont always tell the whle story; look at Kohli. Kohli has an amazing amount of centuries, but only six outside of Asia and only 2 of those vs good teams. Asian batsmen play so many innings on batting tracks. I actually think Lara is also a better ODI player than Tendulkar - and Tendulkar has the greatest ODI stats we have ever seen (only Viv and ABDV are comparable). But Lara averaged higher than Tendulkar in ODIs thoughout the 1990s, and I've never seen Tendulkar score ODI centuries vs Wasim and Donald. Lara then went down the order from 2001 onwards, where it's less easy to accumulate centuries. He then essentially became a T20 player, forced to slog with very few balls available. Whatever your opinions, at least we can agree that Lara, Waugh and Tendy were the greatest of the 1990s, and that all were radically different from one another, and great in different ways.

Thats just a coincidence,we won so many tournaments because of him,he might not have performed in the finals but we got in the finals in the first place because of him, we did not lose umpteen number of tests which were drawn from a losing position because of his batting,people have a short memory.

Cricket is not tennis. Looking for the "best" is nearly impossible given all the variables that are added to a team sport. To me personally, it makes more sense to have a personal favourite, cos that is subjective. But the word "best" involves making an objective decision, and unless one can control for all the crazy variables in a team sport, I just don't see how anyone could make the claim that X is the best, unless like Bradman you go off the spectrum in terms of performance. haha.

Have you ever opened any innings?? When ball is new and it is swinging it is very very difficult to play. Compared to when ball is old. The guy who come at 3 or 4 has much more advantage because he usually comes in around 10th over when ball is not new plus he has 35 - 40 overs to score a century.

People don't even go to see them play,the stands are Empty! the Caribbean isn't that united,WI administrators,commentators like Holding,other islanders,etc...were very hostile to Lara throughout his career and eventually forced him out,for Gayle{who doesn't make squat!} all those dominating TEST runs were made under all that Hell{eg.poor facilities}.WI openers used to always out early& it was like Lara was always opening!

he might have played more matches then lara but played lesser innings then lara out of his 131 tests as compared to lara's 131 tests..and carries higher average and has scored more centuries then him and has performed much more consistently then him .. and has got 17000 odi runs as well which are much more then what lara got..even more centuries in shorter form of the game too..then lara..sachin has..he doesnt get long enough time to bat like lara did for three days othr wse he will surpass 400.

@MRIYBR Sachin is not inventive? All the shots people play these days which are "new" like the upper cut or the behind the wicket leg side hit or the chip over the keeper are all his. Almost all new batting innovations are his except of course the switch hit and the dilscoop(marillier). Has lara ever been as inventive? Hell NO. Sure lara is awesome in tests but he was inconsistent and not even half the player sachin is in odi's. Sachin had to play in the 90's India team - Need I say more?

If you are talking about sheer ability or skill as a batsman, Lara is very probably better than Sachin. Your explanations of 9 double centuries or higher percentage of 150+ scores extra vindicate the point that Lara at his sublime best had done much bigger things that Sachin has ever been able to manage until now. But, it is been widely regarded that Sachin is a better batsman for the tremendous consistency, longevity and meeting increased expectations from nearly one billion fans....
I think Lara is slightly better in tests and Tendulkar is clearly better in ODIs (still not crazily better of course). People always say that averages is what matters but they do know that the only reason that Tendulkar has a higher average than Lara is because of all his not outs. Plus he took like 12 more innings than Lara to pass his record.

I think it's terribly unfair to compare Lara and Tendulkar, to the players themselves...they are both outstanding and yes, legendary batsmen, but their technique and total style of playing is so different, it's almost like comparing eras...it's apples and oranges. Obviously Tendulkar has better technique, Lara would admit that. Yet Lara has an amazing flair and an ability to ad lib that Tendulkar, and indeed, every other batsmen I have seen just doesn't have.

Lara was always my favorite batsman, I wouldn't be qualified to say who was the best. Only the top bowlers and captains who faced them can give an answer. Sachin was an unbelievable player who's record will never be beaten in tests in my opinion. Also one of the most humble superstars I've ever listened to, almost self deprecating at times.
Cricket was blessed to have these 2 players at the same time. Greatest thing is the respect and friendship the have. Could of been easy for them to have rivalry, especially when everyone else seems to talk about who was/is the best.

I had been watching Sachin Tendulkar on and off before we (South Africa) were readmitted in 1991.
Everything about him is just so exceptional. He is wonderful technically and he has everything - class, speed, all the shots, and he is cool under pressure. Cricketers always talk about his amazing balance, even the Aussies. I've seen tapes of Sunil Gavaskar and if you split the screen between him and Tendulkar, they look virtually identical. I have never seen a man with such immaculate balance - it is freakish.
People go to a Test match just to watch Tendulkar. I, for one, would rather watch him than bowl against him. Actually, I'm glad I'll never have to bowl to him in a Test match again, though I've been quite successful against him. He is No. 1 in my book - the best player I have ever had the privilege of bowling to. There's Steve Waugh and there's Brian Lara, who was wonderful in 1995, but Tendulkar is a class above, consistently special.
The best knock I can remember him playing was at Newlands in 1997, when he was just unstoppable. We only got him thanks to a blinding catch by Adam Bacher off a hook shot, otherwise he would have gone on and on.
Under Hansie Cronje we studied hard for a Tendulkar weakness. We thought he might be vulnerable, especially early in his innings, to the ball that is bowled from wide of the crease, coming back in off a good length. He might then be bowled through the gate, or be lbw, especially on English wickets. We also tried peppering him with short balls - not many top-class batters like that - but it didn't really seem to bother him. The one thing that might rattle him is being restricted. He loves scoring, and scoring quickly, and if he is frustrated, sometimes he goes out and looks for the big shot.
I don't think he really gets rattled by sledging. Glenn McGrath tried it and Tendulkar just kept running at him and hitting him back over his head for four. I think that, like Steve Waugh, sledging just makes him more focused: I don't think it is a good idea to have a word.
Tendulkar is already a legend so I'm not sure how he'll be remembered - what comes after legend? . He's the best in the world, one of the most magnificent players there's ever been. He's also a nice guy, a soft-hearted bloke who gives 110% and just loves playing cricket.

No he's not. Both score a century every six innings, and 56 percent of Tendy's scores are below 40, whilst 54 percent of Lara's scores are below 40. Meanwhile, all Lara's big innings are vs good teams and strong bowling attacks, whilst Tendy goes big vs minnows or teams minus their key bowlers.

His triple plus centuries and highest score records like 501* testify how difficult it is to take him out once he starts getting in his rhythm.
sankar uit I dont forget 51 test centuries, but that was because Tendulkar played many more matches and many in Asia. Lara and Tendulkar actually score test centuries at the same rate - about 6 innings per century - but Lara plays tougher opponents.
Stats dont always tell the whle story; look at Kohli. Kohli has an amazing amount of centuries, but only six outside of Asia and only 2 of those vs good teams. Asian batsmen play so many innings on batting tracks.
I actually think Lara is also a better ODI player than Tendulkar - and Tendulkar has the greatest ODI stats we have ever seen (only Viv and ABDV are comparable). But Lara averaged higher than Tendulkar in ODIs thoughout the 1990s, and I've never seen Tendulkar score ODI centuries vs Wasim and Donald. Lara then went down the order from 2001 onwards, where it's less easy to accumulate centuries. He then essentially became a T20 player, forced to slog with very few balls available.
Whatever your opinions, at least we can agree that Lara, Waugh and Tendy were the greatest of the 1990s, and that all were radically different from one another, and great in different ways.

Cricket is not tennis. Looking for the "best" is nearly impossible given all the variables that are added to a team sport. To me personally, it makes more sense to have a personal favourite, cos that is subjective. But the word "best" involves making an objective decision, and unless one can control for all the crazy variables in a team sport, I just don't see how anyone could make the claim that X is the best, unless like Bradman you go off the spectrum in terms of performance. haha.

@MultiSazam lara is a gr8 player no doubt but played always selfishly and was appreciated 4 his stroke making ..he was a mere batsman while sachin is god of not only batting but cricket..he has b8r Technic strokes mental strength then lara. lara nvr played under the pressure to perform under which sachin does with 1 billion indians expecting that from him even when India has got many match winners. he surpasses lara in all aspects of the game..

@makilraj "what is great in that. a player who openes the batting obviously his record will be much better than the one batting low down the order." -------------------------- why it is obvious. Have you ever opened any innings?? When ball is new and it is swinging it is very very difficult to play. Compared to when ball is old. The guy who come at 3 or 4 has much more advantage because he usually comes in around 10th over when ball is not new plus he has 35 - 40 overs to score a century.
@makilraj WI cricket is in a state since Lara left! People don't even go to see them play,the stands are Empty! the Caribbean isn't that united,WI administrators,commentators like Holding,other islanders,etc...were very hostile to Lara throughout his career and eventually forced him out,for Gayle{who doesn't make squat!} all those dominating TEST runs were made under all that Hell{eg.poor facilities}.WI openers used to always out early& it was like Lara was always opening!

Brian Lara is the best of the modern era! People must realize that ONE DAY and 20/20 IS NOT cricket,it's obsolete! only Test cricket is cricket as it is the highest form of the game,which Lara excels under pressure,with a weak team,no bowlers &with his career on the line!Lara dominates in Test, Sachin DOES NOT!

he might have played more matches then lara but played lesser innings then lara out of his 131 tests as compared to lara's 131 tests..and carries higher average and has scored more centuries then him and has performed much more consistently then him .. and has got 17000 odi runs as well which are much more then what lara got..even more centuries in shorter form of the game too..then lara..sachin has..he doesnt get long enough time to bat like lara did for three days othr wse he will surpass 400.
hey hold on...just look at the physic of Lara and "LITTLE" Sachin ..even though he managed to get well with Marshal , Walsh,Ambrose,Lilly,...Shane ' lee Macgratth Muralitaran..and too balling gaints with ease...and the beauty of batting is like a stroke of painting on canvas...his cover drives are like slicing cheese.....what a batsman and just rememb'r the years spent for cricket ...17 years...HOW ABOUT THAT HUH !!!!!!!

Sachin is not inventive? All the shots people play these days which are "new" like the upper cut or the behind the wicket leg side hit or the chip over the keeper are all his.
Almost all new batting innovations are his except of course the switch hit and the dilscoop(marillier).
Has lara ever been as inventive? Hell NO. Sure lara is awesome in tests but he was inconsistent and not even half the player sachin is in odi's.

WI won more matches than india in 90s...india was weaker than WI and sachin averaged 59 in 90s after all...whereas lara just averaged 49...trust me lara just took advantage of batting wickets since 2002 and amassed runs...he was way behind sachin in 90s...
it,s all right to fell in love with brian lara. but u must be obnoxious to even think that sachin did nothing in test. for god sake he has 43 hundreds now. how many player can even think about that? lara could be much more great player if his mind would have been in right place. even his team mates complained that he is one of the complicated, arrogant, self centered, character in cricket history. for those reason he was hated by the administrator and was forced to take early retirement.
If you are talking about sheer ability or skill as a batsman, Lara is very probably better than Sachin.
Your explanations of 9 double centuries or higher percentage of 150+ scores extra vindicate the point that Lara at his sublime best had done much bigger things that Sachin has ever been able to manage until now.
But, it is been widely regarded that Sachin is a better batsman for the tremendous consistency, longevity and meeting increased expectations from nearly one billion fans....
I think Lara is slightly better in tests and Tendulkar is clearly better in ODIs (still not crazily better of course). People always say that averages is what matters but they do know that the only reason that Tendulkar has a higher average than Lara is because of all his not outs. Plus he took like 12 more innings than Lara to pass his record.

And if he does not want to score a century WHY HE HAS scored so many at no. 3. Why not come at no. 8 or 9. Your comments makes no sense.
I think it's terribly unfair to compare Lara and Tendulkar, to the players themselves...they are both outstanding and yes, legendary batsmen, but their technique and total style of playing is so different, it's almost like comparing eras...it's apples and oranges. Obviously Tendulkar has better technique, Lara would admit that. Yet Lara has an amazing flair and an ability to ad lib that Tendulkar, and indeed, every other batsmen I have seen just doesn't have.
Sachin is not humble enough to praise anyone.While other's praise him going on to say he is the greatest...Statistically not mere runs but if u see the rate at which ponting and sachin score,its the same but sachin has more runs coz of more matches,the rate at which ponting is scoring he would have the same amt of runs as sachin if he plays the same amt of matches.So i would never place sachin above ponting and dont compare stance n all.all these guys are legends but nones better than the other.

You are speaking against your own argument that Sachin doesn't score outside India because in the same tournament Sachin was the one who took India single handedly to the finals,he doesnt need a validation from you his stats speak for themselves.
