It's not about competitiveness or rivalry. It's bigger only for Indians as India won last few series. Most Australians or Brits don't care if India win either. Both aus and eng pretty much use every test series as a warm up for Ashes selection. It's more like a cultural event b/w these two countries for over a century which is equivalent to WC for both. India doesn't even matter here. Not sure why Indians are so desperate to get compared.

Rivalries have changed in last 2 decades. In a world where England and Australia were a fierce competitor in tests, another world had India and Pakistan rivalry which was more important as a cricket fan. Now that India can compete the greatest of the tests, India and Australia have become biggest competitors.
BGT has been more consistently competitive since the turn of the century. The Ashes has more history and prestige and England and Aus is a lot more personal. Its the same thing with Ind and Pak. Ind beating Pak is a lot more personal than Aus. I suspect if you ask the casual Indian fan as to whom they would prefer to beat, Pak or Aus in a crunch situation, most people will say Pak. I will say that apart from the 2011-12 series, almost all series since the 03-04 series in Aus have been competitive.

BGT has been the biggest fixture in world cricket in 21st century. Whenever these two teams clash, one of them has always been ranked no 1... also, the two most successful teams at ICC events.. Ask any broadcaster in India or Australia, which clash makes the highest revenue, there's only 1 answer...Steve Waugh called India the final frontier... Steve Smith said way back in 2017 that his biggest cricketing dream is to win a Test series in India. This coming from someone who hasnt won an Ashes in England till date... Cummins has said that a Test series win in India will be "era defining"... Virat and Rohit have already said that they enjoy playing Australia more than any other team... whoever does well in these contests, usually end up having a 10-15 year career... This years BGT will be one of the most highly anticipated Test series of all time... Australia will be aiming to win their first BGT in a decade, India will be looking to avenge the two final defeats of last year.. Both teams will be itching to get their hands on each other already... From what I last heard, the MCG Boxing Day Test tickets of Day 1 have already been sold.. This is cricket's El Clasico..

Pure sporting competitiveness or history does not automatically translate to a bigger rivalry. The emotional response among the general public requires something more personal, something bitter beyond just cricket. Aus and Eng have that history and so do Ind and Pak. The BGT series can never upstage ashes for a typical Aus fan in that regard.
Border Gavaskar Trophy has become the second most important test rivalry replacing the Frank Worrell Trophy for Australia. An away Ashes series will remain the most important series for both England and Australia given the difficulty of task over the past twenty or thirty years of winning series away from home.
Historically of course its the Ashes, but in terms of quality I believe BGT beats Ashes. Ashes is too one sided in favor of the Aussies. BGT, with India suddenly winning two in two away and under extreme circumstances, and Aussies still not able to find a way to defeat India in India, has suddenly raised the bar and stakes really high I believe.
Even if Australia win the next 100 ashes series. Ashes will always be the biggest. That’s because of the history and the tradition. Hate and rivalry takes years
To me with these things you have to take how you would feel about losing into account as well as how you would feel about winning. I can easily imagine that many Australian supporters would be more excited by beating India at home than winning another Ashes, but also suspect they might be considerably more horrified to lose a home Ashes series than they will be if they lose to India again. As an England supporter I think winning an away series in India would be a bigger achievement than winning in Aus though obviously the latter would also be quite something given how poorly we've performed there the last three times. Cold assessment of what's more difficult or impressive doesn't govern excitement levels though!
Aussie here and you are right on the money. Can take losing to India because they are so good. Winning in India is a massive achievement and we realise it's the hardest ask in test cricket. However, lose to England and the country would go into melt down. Here? That can not happen if people want to keep their jobs. The media over hype the Ashes which doesn't help.

How about England vs India? I think Autralia long term will become much weaker. This was on the cards when all their greats retired but sort of had a rejuvenation but very much like the West Indies it will fade away. They have smaller player pools and are not as rich as the other 2 and essentially is isolated as a nation. They also will have competition from other sports and moreso from short form cricket. England the colonial masters with a strong economy can sustain its passion for test cricket and India with it's cricket fervency will remain strong. Currently there is no comparison to the Ashes. Asa South African cricket fan I watch the Australian Ashes summer which sometimes begins at 00:30 SAST. Its the nostalgia the historic trends were one is stronger than the other. I make England favourite for the next Ashes down under simply because the Aussie attack is coming to its end. India beating Pakistan black and blue won't create any buzz lol. India vs Pakistan aside from T20 games is not interesting and not a contest. Just a money making match for broadcasters.
When was the last time a great Ashes series was played in Australia where the final test in Sydney was the decider? The Ashes is competitive only when it's held in England. In Australia, the hosts win it hands down. England is always under prepared when they go down under and come up with hundreds of excuses for their defeat. In the case of BGT, both countries have hosted very competitive series. So, Ashes is only good in England. BGT is good both in India and Australia.
The BGT may be the better more competitive competition at the moment. But it's still just a rivalry between cricket teams. The Ashes is a rivalry between nations, it's history and importance goes far beyond the cricket field, from colonisation in 1788 and the years of imperial rule, to being used and abused on the fields of Gallipoli and being abandoned to fend for our selves during WWII, from Bodyline, the invincibles and ball of the century, it is Australia's moment of going to war against the 'old enemy'. Beating the English is more important than winning the world cup. Case is point is the World Test Champions trophy, it was only seen as a warmup match for the real battle to come, the ashes.
I mean this is like asking if india v Australia is better than india v Pakistan in limited overs as the former produces better quality matches. The same guys saying bgt is better in tests because of quality will say india v Pakistan is better cause of the history 😅
Aus vs Ind has taken place of Aus Vs SA, because Ind has beaten Aus in Aus. SA has slightly fallen off. Ashes is important for even non-cricket fans, it is a more traditional rivalry
Both have different stature. Aus v eng ( both teams play in almost similar conditions) . Ind vs aus( teams win test matches even in away conditions different from home) . England loses badly to both india and Australia at their homes.

Agreed
Its high time we need Aus vs Eng vs Ind tri series in all 3 locations
As an Indian Fan, Kimber is one cricket guru who understands the undertones and nuances - appreciate his take
Pure sporting competitiveness or history does not automatically translate to a bigger rivalry. The emotional response among the general public requires something more personal, something bitter beyond just cricket. Aus and Eng have that history and so do Ind and Pak. The BGT series can never upstage ashes for a typical Aus fan in that regard.
Completely agree with Jarrod, he has his finger on the pulse of cricket and of fans in Aus
Border Gavaskar Trophy has become the second most important test rivalry replacing the Frank Worrell Trophy for Australia.
An away Ashes series will remain the most important series for both England and Australia given the difficulty of task over the past twenty or thirty years of winning series away from home.
The Gabba test made hard core Australian fans cry.
Great Show 😊
Apart from Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, Pakistan vs Afghanistan has also become a heated rivalry in the recent past.
