I have not started woodworking or turning because of the high time demands of my job. So I have been learning through youtube and articles in my spare time and I am so glad I found this video. It is so easy to follow for someone starting out. I am totally saving this.

I use a segmented project planner software and built a wedgy sled. That saves a huge amount of work.

What is the "white" wood called?

Al uses curly maple in lots of his segmented bowls. I beleive that is what he used here.

would a decent 300-500$ miter saw make things way way easier?

If you're referring to using the miter saw in place of a table saw it's a matter of preference. I prefer using a table saw and sled over my miter saw. Once I have a sled built I'm able to repeat the cut over and over and weeks after my first cut. The miter saw once set up works great but getting it back to the exact same angle is a problem.

i'm a beginner and ordered a miter saw for making segments. i was scared to once cut of my finger on a table saw as i'm pretty close working with the blade. let's see how i'm doing :)
